MachineGames talks about Wolfenstein: The New Orderbeing a story-driven, single-player adventure, and it's true there's some finesse and direction to the cutscenes, a suggestion of secondary characters with personality and backstory. Much the same can be said of Die Hard, though, and it's no War and Peace. That's not to dismiss the storytelling in The New Order, but based on what I see in its first two hours, it mostly sticks to the action movie spirit of tearing up Nazis, saving the day, getting the girl, and blowing shit up.
The return of William "BJ" Blazkowicz provides a gruff-voiced American hero with McClane-like hardened features and self-whispered one-liners, while Gruber is all but resurrected in the campy glares and maniacal laughs of the game's arch-villains. More important than that, I've got waves and waves of "Nazi scum" to kill, to use the blunt words of Blazkowicz, and machine guns in each hand. A story-driven romp The New Order may be, but a romp is still a romp. That said, the game shows a hand for ripping up preconceptions.

It's been almost two whole months since we bid farewell to 2013, but it's so hard to let go of the good times. Sony takes a nostalgic look back at the year we left behind with an upcoming round of PlayStation Network price drops on some of 2013's notable digital releases.
Sony's Back to 2013 Sale has a lot to offer for RPG fans, with Tales of Xilliaavailable for $19.99 ($14.99 for Plus members), Dragon's Crown up for $24.99 ($17.49 for Plus), and Ni no Kuni dropped to $9.99 ($6.99 for Plus) -- its lowest digital price to date. Atlus' classic PSone RPG Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is also on sale this week for $4.99, or $3.49 for Plus subscribers.
Other noteworthy drops include Diablo 3 for $39.99 ($34.99 Plus), Rayman Legends for $41.99 ($29.39 Plus), and WWE 2K14 for $39.99 ($29.99 Plus). Sale prices start tomorrow, and last through next Monday.

Most birthday celebrations involve a cake, paper hats and some light tomfoolery, but celebrating the life anniversary of an inanimate object is understandably a little less rowdy. The PS Vita enters its third year of existence by slashing prices on a bunch of games, starting tomorrow.
The PS Vita Anniversary sale, which runs through March 3, makes it a good week to be a PS Vita owner. PS Plus subscribers can grab games for up to 75 percent off, while everyone else can enjoy deals of up to half-off. Cheap downloads for Hotline Miami, Escape Plan, Flower, Killzone Mercenary and many more are available. If you're a PS Plus member, you can grabMachinarium for a paltry $1.75.
A supplemental Back to 2013 sale provides further temptations tomorrow with discounts on Dragon's Crown, Guacamelee, Spelunky, Super Motherload andInjustice: Gods Among Us. Many of the PS Vita games are cross-buy enabled, and PS3 users can enjoy discounts on Diablo 3, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Rayman Legends, Terraria and more.
Both promotions will be active after the PlayStation Store updates tomorrow. There's quite a lot to pore over, so we'd suggest taking a second to review your checkbook first. Checkbooks are still a thing, right?

The WWE Network app has arrived on PS3, PS4, and Xbox 360 consoles, the professional wrestling company has announced.
The subscription-based service, revealed back in January, packs access to over a thousand hours of on-demand video content across WWE's lifetime. Along with classic WWE/WWF match-ups, archives include WCW and ECW events as well.
The app also launched on iOS, Android, Kindle Fire and Roku today. A subscription runs $9.99 a month, regardless of price, and note that there's a six-month minimum commitment to take into consideration.
WWE's on-demand app is expected to land on Xbox One sometime in the summer.

The first three customers to buy a PS4 without a preorder, at Akihabara’s Yodobashi Camera store.
Three months after its release in North America and Europe, PlayStation 4 is finally available in Japan. On Saturday February 22 it was greeted across the nation by the after-effects of the heaviest snowfall in decades; while stores in the major cities were unaffected, blocked roads in some parts of Japan meant that Amazon was unable to fulfill its preorders on time, emailing customers to inform them that their consoles would not arrive on launch day.You might think this would only make for heavier demand at bricks-and-mortar stores. But at close of business Sunday, after two full days, most of the major game and electronics stores we contacted in Tokyo and Osaka said they had had plenty of stock still available – a far cry from the scenes in Europe, where PS4 consoles are still scarce months later. The day before the February 22 launch, major retailers such as Sofmap and Yodobashi Camera were still accepting preorders, and those who queued through the night in the bitter cold found that other customers without preorders could easily stroll up to the counter and buy one of the two available models (with or without camera). The first customer to walk away with a preordered PS4 at Akihabara’s Yodobashi Camera.
Whether this reflects a lack of interest or a comfortable surplus of stock will become clear when the first sales figures are published by Media Create. A spokesperson for Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia declined to give sales figures when contacted, instead simply quoting PS4′s global sales of 5.3 million units, though this figure excludes Japan. The official midnight launch was held on Friday night at the Sony Building in Ginza. Some gamers queued through Thursday night to be among the lucky 100 to receive an invitation to the countdown event, held from 10:30pm until midnight, when one customer was picked by lotto to receive the console he had paid for that morning. The event was broadcast live on Ustream and Niconico and boasted a certain amount of star power, with guests including Hideo Kojima, Yakuza series producer Toshiro Nagoshi and Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki Yoshida, as well as the cast of TV show GameCenter CX and other local celebrities. Video messages included Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono making an apology for the delayed release of Deep Down, as well as words from Sony-signed J-pop stars such as Scandal and Fujifabric. A round of applause greeted Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida as he entered the lobby before the event.Japanese media trained their cameras and microphones on the waiting invitees, some of whom turned up in cosplay that rivalled that of the professional cosplayers parading in front of a giant PS4 box outside. One punter came as a Move controller, perhaps a plea for compatible PS4 games, and had trouble sitting down, while another, Ryo Watanabe, was decked out in military gear. Watanabe would later win the lotto to become the first customer to buy a Japanese PS4.

22cans boss 'has a plan' for next-gen console version, thinks Steam controller is 'interesting'
Peter Molyneux has told Develop that a PlayStation Vita version of his new title Godus could be in the cards.
Speaking to Develop at this month's Casual Connect, the 22cans founder and development legend said that he hopes to bring Godus to as many consumers – and, by extension, platforms – as possible.
The title, which has been designed to "re-invent the god game genre" according to Molyneux, is currently in development for PC, smartphones and tablets – but its creator says it could come to any platform if the control scheme fits well.
"Godus is all about touching your world through our stroking mechanic," he told Develop. "Curiosity was all about tapping, and in Godus we have stroking, done via the touch screen. We get away with that on PC with the mouse, event though it's not as nice, but it would be very hard to do for console.
"I think the Vita is a possibility because of both the front and rear touch inputs. Wii U is a possibility too, if you tweak that very clumsy device, but I find Wii U very awkward. I think the Steam Box controller with those dual touch pads is very interesting."
That's not to say he has given up with the idea of bringing his latest title to Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
"We've got a plan to do Godus on consoles, because if we do it well, I'd love to have the core gamers from the console market in the mix of the millions of people playing in this world," he said.
"One of my obsessions is getting casual people to play with core people, and Godus is designed for that. It's designed to satisfy the core gamer as well as the casual gamer.
"There are virtually no games that I can play with my family because my son wants to play a core game, my wife wouldn't know what to do with a core game and I kind of stand in the middle."
Check back for our full interview with Molyneux later this week.

Sony Computer Entertainment America has released a new Infamous Second Son TV spot.
Sucker Punch's first PS4 game is set in an open-world Seattle and stars new series protagonist Delsin Rowe, a 24-year-old Native American street artist who can control smoke.
He's viewed as a bioterrorist by the Department of Unified Protection, a branch of government tasked with hunting down those with superhuman abilities.
Rowe can unleash smoke projectiles and fireballs. He can also execute a smoke-dash move and confuse enemies using a smoke cloud. He replenishes smoke by absorbing it from chimneys and destroyed cars.

The next Assassin's Creed won't take place in feudal Japan, but it will occur in Jade Raymond's favorite historical era.
Raymond, Ubisoft Toronto studio head and Assassin's Creed series producer, gave just a morsel of information about where the historical fiction franchise will take fans next in an interview with AdWeek. She did not specify which historical era is her favorite.
Interstitial scenes from Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag showed the inner workings of Abstergo Entertainment, an in-universe developer and Ubisoft self-parody. Perceptive fans could find a list of potential settings for future Abstergo titles, including samurai-era Japan.
"When we're building a franchise, we're thinking of a whole universe and how we're developing a meta-story that could live on for many years in games and TV," Raymond said. "If the story has nowhere to go, then you end up with the video game equivalent of The Matrix 2 or something where it's never going to be quite as genius."
The Assassin's Creed franchise has spanned the Crusades-era Middle East, Renaissance Italy, the American Revolution, the golden age of Caribbean piracy, and beyond. The series' cryptic iconography and clues have led fans to speculate about a Japanese setting ever since the original game.
Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag shipped about 10 million copies in 2014, two million short of Assassin's Creed III. Its cat-and-mouse multiplayer was bolstered last week with the 'Guild of Rogues' DLC pack.

We were going to release 4.53 but got caught up actually fixing all the cobra patches "Correctly" along with a host of other features. Then just when things were looking like they were finished 4.55 was released...So now everything has to be re-patched re-tested and some things need to be tweaked again, then it will be time for a release, but we are not going to release something half assed. Remember that Rebug innovates and everyone making CFW these days uses Rebug patches not the other way around... So once we have the features we want in there and its working to perfection, only then will there be a release. Sorry that I can not give you all an ETA on a release date.

Nobody likes useless updates for their consoles, but the latest Vita firmware seems to be taking its sweet time. Whenever we release a Vita hack here at wololo.net, one of the fears is that the exploit will be patched within days by Sony. And in general, they are pretty fast when it comes to that. January 2013 was the month Sony patched Total_Noob’s eCFW for firmwares 1.xx and 2.0x.
Strangely enough, This doesn’t seem to be happening this year. With TN-V out publicly for 2 months, and 5 game exploits announced so far, we still have to see a new firmware from Sony that would patch the Kernel exploit by Total_Noob.
Of course, PSP exploits are not Sony’s priority when it comes to Vita firmware updates, but they have shown they do care quite a lot about making sure exploits are patched as soon as possible.
Nevertheless, we haven’t seen a Vita Firmware update since firmware 3.01, which was released on December 5, more than 2 months ago. In the history of the Vita, the only time it took longer than that for a Firmware update was between versions 2.12 and 2.60.
Firmware 2.60 was released about 3 months after firmware 2.12, and contained quite a good amount of new features.
Other than this 3 month gap between 2.12 and 2.60, this is the longest Vita users have had to wait for a new firmware since the console was released in 2011.
Is the next Vita firmware going to be a huge update? Are Sony waiting for the PS4 release in Japan, in a week? Are they going to patch many bugs, improve some existing features? Is the vita TV going to get some love? Are new exciting features coming? Or is Sony satisfied with the Vita firmware and don’t think a new update is required for the foreseeable future?
What would you like to see in a new vita firmware update?

February 24th, 2014, 00:21 Posted By: wraggster
A hacker named katsu recently released a method for dumping Vita games. As a developer, I am completely against piracy, but as a reverse engineer I can’t shy away from taking apart perfectly working devices. However, most pictures I see of Vita game carts taken apart show the game cart casing damaged beyond repair or completely destroyed. I managed to take apart a game cart and put it together with no obvious signs of damage, and I thought I would share my (simple) method here.
If you take a look at the top right or left corner of the game cart, you can see a line of where the two halves of the plastic was glued together. Locate the upper left corner and, with a sharp knife, push the blade into the line on the corner until you have a small dent. Then, move the knife downwards and wiggle the knife until you loosen the glue for the entire left side of the cart. Then keep moving the knife down and when you hit the bottom of the cart, turn and lose about half the bottom edge of the cart. Now you can use your fingers to spread the two halves apart (but be careful not to use too much force and tear the glue from the other two edges), and you can either shake the memory chip out or use a pair of tweezers.
If you were to follow katsu’s pinout, you need to solder to the copper pads. A trick for doing so is to first flux up the points and then melt a pea-sized blob of solder in middle of all the points. Then take your iron and spread the blob around until all the pads are soldered up. Then just make the the remaining blob is not on top of any copper and you can easily remove it.

Sony's PlayStation 4 virtual reality headset will finally be unveiled next month at GDC 2014, a new report suggests.Sony's £1000 HMZ-T2 personal 3D viewer.
TechRadar reports that the anticipated VR device will be formally announced at the San Francisco conference next month, which begins 17th March.Like the Oculus Rift headset, the virtual reality visor will wrap a pair of screens onto the wearer's head. But, unlike Oculus, Sony is expected to have perfected the technology to a degree that multiple versions of the hardware won't need to be released."Sony has deliberately taken its time to tweak and polish the headset before revealing it," a source said. "People will definitely be impressed with what Sony's built."Eurogamer broke news of the headset last September, when we learnt that it had originally been destined for a reveal at Gamescom 2013.Its unveiling there was pulled, and its appearance delayed into 2014 - a moment that now sounds on the horizon. When quizzed about the device last year, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida simply said: "We don't talk about that."
