Some thirty PS Vita development kits have been supplied to Abertay University in Dundee as part of a joint effort to give graduates more hands-on experience as well as strengthen Sony's bonds with the next generation of developers.
The new development kits, in addition to the PS3 and PS4 hardware already available at Abertay, have prompted the university to claim it now houses "Europe's largest teaching laboratory of Sony PlayStation consoles".
As part of the partnership between Sony and the university, every programming student at Abertay will be given access to the Vita and PS4 development technology.
"The next generation of PlayStation-savvy developers are now in education and Abertay University is at the forefront of bringing young and talented developers to our platform," said Maria Stukoff, PlayStation UK's head of academic development.
"It is these students who will influence the future of video games and we are delighted to work with Abertay University to make this a PlayStation training hub."
Abertay is widely known within the UK industry as a leading education centre for aspiring games developers. Undergraduates in their third year will take part in a major project to build a game.
Two student teams are currently building software for PS Vita with the hope that their prototypes could possibly lead to a commercial game release. One project is a new edition of Velocity, a game series created by Brighton studio FuturLab, while the other will be an entirely new IP.
FuturLab co-founders James Marsden and Kirsty Rigden are advising both teams during their development.
"We think this initiative is fantastic. It's great for us because we're able to effectively triple our workforce developing new prototypes," said FuturLab co-founder James Marsden.
"It's great for students because they get valuable experience working as a project team all the way from concept development and pitching, through to a playable demo suitable for pitching to a publisher."

Online play for Gran Turismo 5 is set to expire in May, but the company has announced it's pulling the plug on the game's DLC early. On April 30, all Gran Turismo 5 DLC will vanish from the PlayStation Store.
In order to access Gran Turismo 5's "Racing Car Pack" and "Course Pack" after April 30, PS3 users will need to download and install a free supplemental piece of DLC called "Family Upgrade." Sony points out that, after online services have been terminated, some DLC can be re-downloaded through PSN even if local game data is erased from the hard drive – but not all of it.
Sony also announced Gran Turismo TV is shutting down on March 14. Gran Turismo TV is a video-on-demand service where users can access a variety of car-focused content, including pay-per-view videos.

Naughty Dog seemingly won everyone over last year (including Joystiq and theDICE Awards) with The Last of Us, its tale of survival in a clicker-ridden world. Its ending felt fairly conclusive, but in a recent discussion (which you should not explore if you're wary of spoilers for the game or DLC) on Reddit, a fan asked what the odds are for a future chance to visit The Last of Us' world once more.
"If you're asking about a sequel ... right now I'd say it's 50/50," Creative Director Neil Druckmann responded.
If that's not enough to rile people up, Game Director Bruce Straley teased in the same thread that theteam is "working on the 3rd DLC drop for MP right now! ... and maybe something else ... we'll see." It's almost like they enjoy teasing fans!
Of course, if you missed your date with "Left Behind," the game's Valentines Day dose of narrative DLC, that's an immediate opportunity to spend more time with Ellie.

The Rocksmith 2014 DLC train keeps rollin' with five new Rise Against songs available for Ubisoft's guitar game. As always, the individual songs cost $2.99, while the 5-song pack will run $11.99. The songs chosen by Ubisoft to highlight the Chicago punk rock group are: "Prayer Of The Refugee," "Give It All," "Satellite," "Make It Stop (September's Children)" and "Swing Life Away."
"Swing Life Away" is a change from most of Rise Against's library, as well as most of Rocksmith 2014 in that it's recorded acoustically. So yeah. Take that to Trivial Pursuit night. You're welcome.

PS4 will remain in short supply until around April, predicts Sony.
The new console has been a huge success for the platform holder. According to UK retailers, PS4 is the best-selling games machine this year so far, and since January has sold around double the number of units of its nearest competitor – Xbox One.
PlayStation UK and Ireland boss Fergal Gara admitted to MCV that the performance has defied the company’s expectations, but hopes retailers will have free-supply of the console before the summer.
“I can’t work it out precisely. But based on what I’ve seen so far, I think it is going to be tricky until around about April. You might get a fortnight or a week here or there where it is more available, but we should be back to free supply by about April,” said Gara.
“That’s our best guess. It might be a little earlier than that, or it might be a little later. But we’ll get there.”
On the success of the console so far, he added: “PS4 pre-orders were obviously a strong indicator of what was going to happen, but they were so big that we were pinching ourselves and wondering if people were pre-ordering in more than one place, and if some of these pre-orders were real.
“We were getting numbers we never imagined, let alone seen before. But it proved to be real. How do I reconcile that? I think the world has changed since we launched PS3.
“The price differential between PS3 and PS4 is not nearly as a big as it was between PS2 and PS3. But you are also talking about a public that has become used to regular technology upgrades on reasonably expensive devices, likes tablets and smartphones. So there is a comfort level with upgrading that meant consumers were ready earlier and there was a pent-up demand that we couldn’t anticipate. It’s been a pleasant surprise.”

February 21st, 2014, 21:54 Posted By: wraggster
Sony has at long last launched the PS4 in its homeland of Japan.
The ¥39,980 (£234) machine officially arrives on February 22nd – which, as time buffs out there will realise, is in just a few moments (15:00GMT Feb 19th).
The three-month wait was an unprecedented delays for a PlayStation device in Japan, with Sony taking the decision to face off the competition from Xbox One in Microsoft key Western territories.
And it’s a decision that seems to be paying off.
The console arrives with a launch line-up including Yakuza: Ishin, Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends, Nobunaga’s Ambition: Creation, Strider, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, Resogun, Tomb Raider, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and NBA 2K14.
Famitsu has some pictures of folk waiting in line earlier today.
The question for Western fans, of course, is whether PSN will suffer any wobbles?
Xbox One is yet to receive a Japanese launch date.

Console giant has 'deliberately taken its time to tweak and polish the headset before revealing it'
Sony is set to unveil its own virtual reality headset for the PS4 at GDC next month, according to a report.
An "inside source" has told TechRadar that he felt people would "definitely be impressed" with the tech, a potential rival to the Oculus Rift.
It is not clear however whether consumers would be able to use the headset for other devices, such as PC, or if it will only work with the PS4.
Sony has long been reported to be developing its own virtual reality headset, and is rumoured to have been close to revealing its plans on a number of occasions before. The source claimed however that the firm "has deliberately taken its time to tweak and polish the headset before revealing it".
The Game Developers Conference 2014 will take place between March 17th and March 21st.

At 10AM ET/7AM PT today, it will be midnight on February 22 in Japan, marking the launch of the PlayStation 4 in its home country. After three months of watching the rest of the world play a new console, for once Japan has had to wait to join the party. If you'd like to see the moment as it happens, you can tune in to Sony's official stream of its launch event.
The launch details: The base console is priced 39980 yen (around $390), and comes with a download voucher for Knack, one year's warranty, and a DualShock 4. Going by a Famitsu list, the launch line-up includes plenty of day 1 games across retail shelves and the PS Store - we've listed them below the break. One big name you won't find there is Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, but today also marks the worldwide launch of the first phase of its beta on PS4 - the game proper is due on April 11.

The second downloadable addition for PlayStation-exclusive 2D action gameMuramasa Rebirth has been unveiled, and instead of more samurai combat, players are thrust into the role of a lowly dirt farmer.
Entitled Genroku Legends – A Cause to Daikon For, the DLC casts players as Gonbe, a widowed farmer who grows weary of the local lord taxing his village to death. Instead of instituting democratic elections, Gonbe opts to solve things the old-fashioned way. Unfortunately for this assault, Gonbe isn't much of a trained warrior so the weapons he carries with him into battle are repurposed farm implements.
Genroku Legends - A Cause to Daikon For is slated for release on the North American PlayStation Network Store come February 25. A European release will follow the next day. Aksys has yet to announce a price point for this DLC offering.

Heads up, Bomberman fans: Bloober Team's PlayStation 4-exclusive competitive multiplayer game Basement Crawl has finally surfaced after a series of delays, and is set to arrive digitally via the PlayStation Network next week in North America and Europe.
Basement Crawl pushes the Bomberman formula to M-rated extremes, letting players messily exterminate their friends in four-player local and eight-player online multiplayer modes. The game also offers a single-player campaign that pits solo players against murderous AI-controlled psychopaths.
Basement Crawl will be available for $9.99 when it hits PSN in North America on February 25. A European release, priced at €9.99, will follow on February 26.

February 21st, 2014, 00:49 Posted By: wraggster
One year ago today at Sony’s PlayStation Meeting in New York, the platform holder went public with its plans to release PS4 in time for holiday 2013. We saw the new DualShock 4 pad, next-gen games and a vision: Sony pitched the new hardware as the videogame console built by game developers and laser-targeted at players. And as part of that February showcase, Sony explained that planning for the new console began to formulate at a very high level within Sony’s Japan HQ just after PS3’s troubled launch.Only a small group of Sony execs were in on that plan right up until late 2012, when PlayStation UK’s managing director Fergal Gara became part of discussions around the new console. “The target was clearly to get out last year prior to Christmas, and that of course got communicated to the world in February,” he tells us. “It was still a little broad in February, in that the territories and pricepoint weren’t defined, but what’s really pleasing is that we managed to communicate our goals effectively.”At PlayStation Meeting, Sony showed that it had been listening, careful to get developers onside with an approachable, accessible console while pleasing players with a tight focus on games. Though some complained of not seeing the console itself, very few inside Sony had seen a PS4 by that point; understandably, it was considered a risk to go too public too early with other details, too. “So things like price, for example, there are a lot of variables that go into that,” continues Gara. “If you announce the price ten months ahead of your launch there could be some moving parts that make that uncomfortable when it comes to launch – it was better to do that at E3.”Press and player reaction afterwards was mostly positive, and tinged with a more than a little relief, as E3 2012 had left a vaguely unpleasant taste in the mouth. Rumours around Sony and Microsoft’s new consoles had reached a crescendo in the media, too – confirmation that 2013 would be the year we’d see a new PlayStation and Xbox was long overdue by that point.

The fate of BioShock Vita can certainly be described as ‘uncertain’.
The game was announced in June 2011 at E3 but has been MIA ever since.
The first worrying noises began emerging in late 2012 when Ken Levine said that the SKU’s future was “in the hands of business people”. In early 2013 he added that it was “out of his hands”.
In August 2013 Levine said that he was still “very much engaged” in the game but that he couldn’t “personally greenlight the thing” himself.
Then of course earlier this week Irrational as we know it was killed, casting a shadow over the entire BioShock franchise.
Now 2K Games has told CVG that it can offer “no update” regarding the game’s status.
None of which means it definitely won’t happen, of course – Take-Two retains the rights to the IP and is free to farm it out to whatever dev is so chooses. However, with BioShock Infinite falling so short of expectations it’s fair to ask what appetite remains for the franchise throughout the publisher’s corridors.

Has it been a year already? On 20th February 2013, Sony held a press conference in New York to break the silence on its PlayStation 4 plans.
It marked a moment of truth for the company; a high-stakes gamble with Sony pouring investment into its console business in the hope that PlayStation could return to the glory days of PS One and PS2. Many, understandably, doubted whether it could be done.
Now, some twelve months later, the PS4 has already surpassed five million unit sales; a remarkable result, even moreso considering the system still hasn't launched across Asia.
But how close does the vision, laid out one year ago, match the final product? How many of Sony's initial PS4 promises have materialised? In the slideshow below, CVG looks through the key promises made during the PlayStation Meeting, and measures them up against the final product.

Zombie Studios' procedurally generated first-person scare-fest Daylight launches on PC and PlayStation 4 on 8th April. It costs £11.99.One interesting new feature revealed today is the game's use of Twitch chat to let players cue in-game events. Say, for example, someone watching a Daylight stream types the word "meow" into the chat. This would cause the game to make a corresponding sound of a cat. "So yes. You can literally scare your friends now by watching the stream," publisher Atlus said. There are caveats. In Atlus' words:"They're all on timers, so you can't spam them. That would be ridiculous."And: "We're not going to tell you the list of words. You're going to have to find them through experimentation."Daylight uses RealD3D tech so it'll be fully 3D compatible out of the box. "Catching an overhead light flicker down an incredibly long corridor is one of the more chilling 3D applications... until you come across a spirit, that is," Atlus said. The game also supports the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.

UPDATE 20/02/2014: Medieval RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance has ended its Kickstarter campaign with a healthy £1,106,016.That's enough to secure a dog companion in the game. Rejoice!ORIGINAL STORY 18/02/2014: No-fantasy RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance will definitely be a PS4 and Xbox One game as well as PC (Windows, Linux) and Mac, developer Warhorse confirmed.Until now a console release was an aspiration, for political reasons rather than technical."While we never doubted our technical ability to do it, we were not sure about the actual publishing and distribution. In the last console generation, it just wasn't possible to have a game on console without an official publisher," wrote Warhorse on Kickstarter."In this generation it's going to be different though. We had lot of discussion with both Microsoft and Sony in the past weeks and we are happy to announce that the game concept of Kingdom Come: Deliverance was approved by both Sony and Microsoft for the next-gen platforms (PS4 and Xbox One)."Both companies are very eager to work with independent developers now"
Warhorse
"Both companies are very eager to work with independent developers now and were really helpful in speeding up the whole process. We were provided with dev kits and will get cracking on the console version right away."In a Reddit Ask Me Anything, held before the update was posted to Kickstarter, Warhorse executive producer Martin Klima announced that, "We can confirm that the game will be - at least digitally - available on both PS4 and Xbox One (besides Windows, Linux, Mac)."The studio may be able to self-publish a boxed version of the game, it elaborated on Kickstarter, "or we may need to make a deal with another company to do it".Back on Reddit, Klima added: "We are aiming for simultaneous release across all platforms. We will know for sure when we get toward the end of the development. Even if the console version is delayed, it will be months, not years."Early access alpha and beta releases are planned on PC (and later Mac), but they're still not confirmed for console."The alpha version access is confirmed for Windows version only," the studio stated. "We are working with other platform holders to see if it could be made available there, but we cannot promise anything yet."The beta access will be available on Windows, Linux and Mac at least; it may also be available on consoles but we cannot confirm it yet."

2K Games has declined to confirm whether or not its BioShock game for Vita has been cancelled following confirmation of the closure of BioShock studio Irrational Games this week.
Irrational Games head Ken Levine made the announcement Tuesday, confirming plans to disband the developer and start a new outfit with just 15 staff, while handing the BioShock franchise to publisher 2K Games.
The announcement has sparked fears that this could be the final nail in the coffin for the BioShock Vita game, which has been a questionable prospect since its announcement almost three years ago.
A 2K Games rep has told CVG today that the firm has 'no update' on the status of the game - a project which Levine himself last year admitted was yet to begin development as he struggled to foster a deal between Sony and Irrational Games parent firm Take-Two.
Levine told prying fans in July 2013 that he was still "trying to make a match" or, more specifically, "trying to get the 2 companies to sign off" on the project - more than two years after its clearly premature announcement.
Outed during Sony's E3 press conference in June 2011, BioShock on Vita was to be "its own thing being built from the ground up". Nothing but the BioShock logo was shown.
Levine said in October 2011 that Irrational could "potentially" outsource development of BioShock Vita, but only if the studio can ensure it'll still hit the quality mark the series is known for.

Infamous Second Son, the PS4's next major platform exclusive, will require 24GBs of hard drive space for its mandatory installation.
The platform holder confirmed as much with a picture of the game's box art including its back-cover, which shows the HDD requirement.
A 24GB install places Infamous roughly in the range of the average PS4 game so far, with games like Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag(21.2GB) and DC Universe Online (22.7GB) requiring similar space. The largest of the PS4 launch games were NBA 2K14 (41.8GB), Killzone Shadow Fall (38.5GB) and Knack (35.6GB).
All disc-based PS4 games are required to be installed to the hard drive in their entirety for data transfer speed reasons, as is also the case with Xbox One.
PS4 allows users to play the earlier stages of games as they're being installed, with most titles being bootable within one minute of the disc being inserted into the console for the first time.
Second Son stars new protagonist Delsin Rowe, a 24-year-old Native American street artist who can absorb special abilities from others, including the ability to manipulate smoke and electricity.
Delsin is viewed as a bioterrorist by the DUP, a branch of government tasked with controlling those with superhuman abilities and hunted.
CVG recently went hands-on with the game and you can read our fullInfamous Second Son impressions here.
