Sony continues to pursue the exciting indie game scene by making it easier for smaller teams to get games cheaply up and running on PlayStation hardware, be it PS4, PS3 or Vita.At GDC - just the place for it - Sony announced partnerships with GameMaker Studio, MonoGame and deeper integration of Unity.Games made in GameMaker Studio (Hyper Light Drifter, Nuclear Throne, Nidhogg, Gunpoint, etc) will be exportable to PlayStation hardware for free, theoretically opening a whole catalogue of possible new arrivals. You'll still need to be a registered PlayStation developer, though, and have appropriate development kits, as a developer at the show explained on NeoGaf.Sony Computer Entertainment's Authoring Tools Framework has also been made free and open source, and was apparently used to make The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls."SCE continues to set a high benchmark across the industry for working with developers worldwide to bring the world's greatest and most innovative games to PlayStation platforms, including improved processes, flexible policies and extensive resource support," wrote Sony America's developer relations guy Shane Bettenhausen on the US PlayStation Blog."With more than 100 games in development for PS4 from independent developers and more than 1,000 licensed self-publishers, PS4 will continue to be the most appealing platform for both developers and gamers."

Dragon Fin Soup is described as a SNES-style turn-based role-playing game, with Roguelike elements, for PC and PlayStation (PS4, PS3, Vita) hardware. And it's nearly reached its $24K goal on Kickstarter. It's a colourful, eye-catching and visually charming game with a story mode (reloads upon death) and survival mode (permadeath upon death).Turns are taken simultaneously with enemies, making things a bit more hectic, and there's fishing, crafting, gathering, story missions, randomly generated quests, loads of locations, 20 equipment slots and a lot of statistics! It's all heavily inspired by fairy tales, particularly Robin Hood, hence the Red Robin main charater - a "cheerful alcoholic making her living as a bounty hunter".Even the developer, Grimm Bros., has a touch of fairy tale about it, and is formed of five experienced devs.

Sony has released its Authoring Tools Framework as a free open-source download on GitHub.
The toolset has been used in the development of titles such as The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls. The development tool supports PS4, Vita, PS3 and PSP games.
The framework is written in C# and features a set of software components for making tools on Windows.
"We’re looking forward to expanding ATF’s usage beyond SCE, working more with external PlayStation developers and the larger game development community as a whole," said SCEA principal tools programmer Ron Little.
“Now that ATF is open-source, we’re excited to see the ways developers use the toolset, which could expand beyond games.”
More information about the Authoring Tools Framework will be discussed at GDC on March 19th between 3:30pm and 4:30pm in room 3020 in the West Hall.
AFT can be downloaded here.

Paternal poser Octodad: Dadliest Catch sold more than 90,000 copies on PC, Mac, and Linux since its launch in January, which means it also passed the octomark of 88,888 sales, and that's grand, too. Developer Young Horses is ecstatic with the sales figures, and president Phil Tibitoski said "our expectations have been met and then some to say the least."
"Our Kickstarter funds for Octodad went towards some business costs and conference booths," Tibitoski wrote on the game's blog. "Outside of that our 9 person team at Young Horses worked on Octodad: Dadliest Catch for free for 2.5 years while holding other full-time jobs. Our hopes were that we would make back the amount of money that we felt our time was worth and be given the opportunity to bring forth from our noodly noggins other weird stuff for our next game."
"This puts us in a position where we've been able to pay ourselves back for our time spent AND continue to pay ourselves in the future," he added on Twitter. "We no longer have day jobs, and it's looking like we'll get to make another game. Mission Accomplished."
The tentacular concept for Dadliest Catchis controlling an octopus who's trying to hide the fact he's not human. Not only is he not what he seems, but he's also a father with a lot to do, and you have to try and help him complete the challenges of daily life. We say try, but what we really mean is watch him sprawl around like a, well, octopus in human's clothing.
Dadliest Catch is expected to arrive on PS4 next month, with Move supportadding to the mayhem. There's no word yet on a concrete release date.

Hoping to tap the lucrative Venn diagram overlap that includes both basketball and baseball fans is PlayStation Sports Pack Volume 1, a compilation that offers PlayStation 3 owners NBA 2K14 and MLB 14: The Show.
This two-game package debuts on April 1, six months after NBA 2K14 first hit store shelves, but the same day that MLB 14: The Show goes on sale. The compilation is priced at $90, and offers players both games in their entirety alongside "6000 STUBS for MLB 14 The Show and 20,000 Virtual Currency forNBA 2K14." If you haven't played either of these games, think of STUBS and Virtual Currency as proprietary points that allow players to pick up additional in-game content.
While the package is labeled "Volume 1," it's unknown if this is the first entry in an ongoing promotional series or if somebody at Sony simply thought that addition might make the compilation sound more fancy. We contacted Sony for clarification, but the company is currently only willing to discuss this entry.

Multi system emulator for Windows/Wii/GC/PS3/XBOX/XBOX360/Android has been updated. Changes:
Cores:
- Mupen64 – W coordinate for vertices now properly set according to per-game depth bias. Should fix most of the texture wobbling issues in games.
- Mupen64 – Fixed ‘No Controller connected’ issue in Banjo-Tooie.
- Mupen64 – Uses refactored audio RSP plugin, includes numerous fixes such as improved MusyX support, etc.
- Mupen64 – Glide64 refactoring - Optimized dither noise code – is now done on the GPU entirely.
- Mupen64 – Glide64 refactoring – codebase has been cleaned up significantly, code duplication cut down on.
- Mupen64 – (Non-mobile versions) – Three-point filtering option instead of just bilinear filtering. The N64 used an inferior form of bilinear filtering called 3-sample (or 3-point) filtering. Textures were made with this in mind so many look a lot better with point filtering vs. bilinear.
- Screenshot comparison here: http://imgur.com/a/M9nRP
- Genesis Plus GX – Aspect ratio changes are now applied correctly.
- Genesis Plus GX – Other changes.
- Mednafen VB – Added Core Options for Virtual Boy – Anaglyph/Palette.
- Mednafen (All) – Should correctly save SRAM to save directory now.
- SNES9x – Memory leak fixes and some other improvements.
- Nestopia – Core updates.
3DEngine – New core. A combination of all other 3D tech demos so far along with advanced libretro features like camera support, GPS/location services, etc. Can also be used to display still pictures (JPEG/PNG). JPEG support is buggy right now.
- VBA-M – Adds Code Breaker/Game Shark support (by using cheat files).
FBA core – No more hardcoded 1024×1024 frame buffer – is now set dynamically. Should in most cases free up around 3MB of system RAM.
RetroArch PlayStation3:
- Analog input works now – cores that support RETRO_ANALOG (such as TyrQuake) should now have working DualShock controls.

Indie studio Team Colorblind revealed that its current project Aztez is headed to the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita with a curious blend of bloody beat-'em-up gameplay and city-building strategy.
Though its flashy monochrome style recalls Ska Studios' The Dishwasher at first glance, Aztez cites inspiration from varied sources. Combat artist and designer Ben Ruiz aims to infuse his upcoming game with "the feel and creativity ofBayonetta, the sensationalism and mobility of Capcom's Alien Vs Predator, and the precision difficulty of classic Devil May Cry."
Aztez isn't just a straightforward brawler, though, as players will also have to manage their empire in Risk-like strategic sequences sprinkled throughout gameplay. A release date has not been announced.

German developer Daedalic Entertainment has revealed plans to bringDeponia, the first entry in a trilogy of the same name, to the PlayStation 3 later this year.
While the basic point and click gameplay of the computer game will remain intact in the PlayStation 3 incarnation of Deponia, this new version of the game gives players direct control over protagonist Rufus as he becomes embroiled in a wacky case of mistaken identity. Daedalic describes Deponia as a "fast-paced comedy of errors and one of the most unusual love stories in gaming history" while citing Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett as inspirations for the game's offbeat humor.
So far there's no word on when exactly Deponia might reach Sony's console, nor any official price point for the game. Steam currently lists the PC version of the game at $20, though there's no guarantee its PS3 counterpart will follow the same pricing scheme.

Indie horror adventure Home will be coming to PS4 and Vita later this year.
Its developer Benjamin Rivers confirmed the news on the EU PlayStation Blog.
According to Rivers, the game's "simple controls and heavy reliance on rich sound and atmosphere make it a great choice for a console system".
Previously released on PC and iOS, Home is notable for its 'choose your own adventure' style narrative. The protagonist's journey is entirely dependent on the decisions made by the player, meaning there are numerous ways to play through the game.
"Home is a game that depends on the players who play it," explained Rivers. "It doesn't just talk to you; you're part of the conversation.
"So the most exciting thing about seeing the game arrive on PS4 and Vita is going to be reading and hearing the myriad new stories, theories and comments that players will continue to contribute to the discussion surrounding the game.
"I hope you're as excited as I am to see Home in the hands of a whole new audience. I can't wait for you to play it."

The option to rent titles via PlayStation network has been spotted in the wild.
As reported by PSNStores, Deep Silver title Catherine currently offers one, seven and 30 day rental options upon checkout (currently priced at free). Nothing happens when trying to complete the purchase, although an entry appears under the Services List called “Catherine PS Now”.
Earlier this week a mock-up menu image on the Gaikai website pointed to the pending introduction of streaming options via PSN.
Sony is expected to introduce PS3 and possibly PS2 streaming rental options on the PlayStation Store some time later this year in the US with a European launch looking likely for 2015, although don’t rule out an earlier move.

Sony's gaming handheld has been given a makeover.
The PlayStation Vita Slim measures 20 per cent thinner and 15 per cent lighter than the original Vita, and also now comes in a selection of extra colours.
Inside, the components have also been improved, with Sony saying that battery life has been extended to around six hours total. The quad-core Cortex A9 processor, 512MB of RAM and 128MB of video memory provide the same horsepower as the first Vita, but 1GB of internal storage capacity is also now included.
The biggest change to the Slim is the replacement of the Vita’s five-inch OLED screen with an LCD panel.
Outside, a micro USB charging port has been added. Unlike the Vita, the Vita Slim no longer offers the option of 3G connectivity, sticking with Wi-Fi only.
Controls-wise, the Vita Slim largely retains the look and feel of its predecessor. Minor changes have been made to the shape of some buttons, and the power LED has been repositioned.
The Vita Slim includes a ‘mega pack’ games bundle, including several critically acclaimed indie titles such as Hotline Miami and Thomas Was Alone. It can be used to play some PS4 games using Remote Play functionality.

The PlayStation 4's free Playroom app has been updated with a new gameplay mode, allowing players to send their virtual robotic pals on a deadly trip through an augmented reality ninja training course.
Ninja Bots is a brief, autoscrolling platformer in which up to four players compete for coins while fending off enemy ronin bots. Players tilt to control lateral bot movement and flick shuriken at approaching enemies by swiping the DualShock 4's touch pad. The latest app update also introduces a new set of unlockable trophies exclusive to the Ninja Bots mode.
Note that The Playroom requires a PlayStation Camera in order to function -- potentially a tall order, as the device is now in short supply at multiple retailers. If you need some tips on corralling your virtual critters, our own Richard Mitchell showed off the Playroom's features prior to the PS4's launch last year, and only a few bots were seriously hurt in the process. They seem to enjoy music, so bust our your ukulele if you have one handy.

It's not uncommon for gamers to hold off on purchasing new consoles, games and accessories until a price drop; what's is uncommon is waiting, and being rewarded with a price increase. The Toronto Sun reports that starting today, the PlayStation 4 will cost $50 more in Canada, up from its previous price of $399.99.
Unfortunately, the bad news doesn't end there. The PlayStation Camera and DualShock 4 are also rising in price, from $59.99 to $64.99. Two games exclusive to Sony's system - Infamous: Second Son and MLB 14: The Show - are also getting bumped, from $64.99 to $69.99.
Sony said the price changes are being made to "respond to changes in the market environment." The Canadian Dollar is currently weak against the US Dollar, but Sony did not specifically cite this as an influencing factor. Meanwhile, Microsoft told the Sun that there were no current plans for a price hike in the land of hockey and maple leaves.

CounterSpy's plans to infiltrate the PS3, Vita, Android and iOS were knownsince May, but now we can add the PS4 to the list of platforms with a high risk for spying activity. Developer Dynamighty, which is led by former LucasArts developers John Elliot & David Nottingham, leaked the intel on Europe's PlayStation Blog and added that we could expectto start sifting through secrets in Summer 2014.
In CounterSpy, players enlist in the COUNTER Agency and sneak into bases owned by nations in the middle of the Cold War. While hunting down blueprints to improve your gear is on your to-do list, you'll spend most of your time thwarting the destructive efforts of each nation, doing your best to make sure they don't nuke humanity out of existence.
With support for transferring saves and unlocking weapons across Sony's devices, CounterSpy should fill your '60s spy needs wherever you go. Of course, it remains to be seen if you'll join the ranks of great spies like James Bond, or if you're more of a bumbling agent prone to .
