Those without an Ouya will be happy to hear that Towerfall, one of the nascent console's best games, is headed to the PlayStation 4 in the enhanced form ofTowerfall Ascension on March 11.
The original version of Towerfall mates the pixel-heavy aesthetic so popular with indie game developers with frantic, four-player multiplayer combat. In lieu of guns and a series of corridors, players are each given archery equipment, then dropped into a 2D stage rife with platforms and pitfalls. Think of it as a cross between the frantic combat of the Super Smash Bros. games, and the exacting, retro platforming and chunky aesthetic of Spelunky.
Towerfall Ascension improves upon this basic template by adding 50 new Versus arenas, "a bunch of new variants" for the game's stages and a few new power-ups. Additionally, Ascension brings with it a new Quest Mode that allows two players to cooperatively battle waves of monsters spawned from portals. The gameplay here is similar to that seen in the game's core multiplayer modes, but as designer Matt Thorson notes, Quest Mode fleshes out Towerfallas a whole by adding "a bunch of new content to explore even when you don't have three friends around."
As of now there is no price point attached to Towerfall Ascension. That March 11 release date only applies to the United States, but Thorson claims that a European release "shouldn't be far behind."

A former winner of Sony’s Gran Turismo Academy competition has been signed up as a driver for a real-life race team.
The BBC reports that 22-year old Jann Mardenborough is joining Red Bull’s Arden Motorsport team to compete in the 2014 GP3 series – that’s just two notches below F1 in the global race circuit scene.
"I thought I was pretty good because I could beat my friends on my street, but it was the first time trial I ever entered,” he said of winning the 2011 GT Academy, which is an online competition that takes place within the Gran Turismo games.
"I just wanted to see how I stacked up against people across Europe but I didn't expect to win. No way I thought that.
"[In GP3] there's a lot more power, more downforce, and it's going to be more difficult to shine. But it's in the shop window on the same weekend as Formula 1, on the same tracks, and in front of all the right people.
"It's the top of motorsport and it's what I want to achieve. That would be amazing if it happened but I'm not trying to plan things out. I just want to live in the moment and go as hard as I can - see what happens after that."

GT6 finds itself in an awkward middle ground, both of generation and genre, we said in our Gran Turismo 6 review.
Gran Turismo 6 wants to get you behind a wheel as quickly as possible. Once you’ve placed the disc in your PS3’s drive, all that stands between you and the open road is an intro and the name-entry fields. After this, you’ll find yourself parked in the pits at Brands Hatch, sitting in a Clio RS ’11. It’s an efficient opening, undoubtedly, and you’ll initially feel grateful to Polyphony for sparing you the ordeal of navigating another of its outdated UI designs before you’ve had a chance to sample the new driving physics.Heartened, you squeeze the right trigger and wait for the revs to spike. Nothing happens. You try again, but the 2.0L in-line four remains stubbornly unmoved. It’s X you should be pressing. Despite Polyphony’s keenness to be on trend with Gran Turismo 6’s menu-less startup, the studio apparently remains entirely unaware of many of the other genre innovations that have become standardised since 1997.Having located the archaic accelerator, it’s at least now possible to get out on the tarmac. But even after undoing a decade’s worth of conditioning and forcing yourself to ignore the triggers, the experience is still a neutered one. All of the driving aids are switched on and your hot hatch is inexplicably lumbered with an automatic gearbox.Despite Polyphony’s admirable sentiment, you’re now forced to spend a lap wishing it would end so that you can remap the controls to something more befitting of the 21st century and switch off all those patronising driving aids. Much of this could have been avoided by simply asking players if they are new to Gran Turismo – or even driving games – before the game starts, then automatically customising the default settings to suit.

February 19th, 2014, 20:42 Posted By: wraggster
The Game Developers Conference has released the results of its second annual State of the Industry survey, highlighting trends toward self-publishing and PlayStation 4 platform development.
More than 2,600 developers responded to the survey following last year's GDC event, with twenty percent noting an intent to ship their next project for the PlayStation 4. Seventeen percent of surveyed developers foresee an Xbox One release for their next game, while four percent target the Wii U.
Smartphones and PC platforms continue to dominate developer focus, however. According to the GDC's survey, 51 percent of respondents want to make their next game for tablets and smartphones, while 52 percent will tackle PC and Mac platforms.
This year's survey also revealed a rise in self-publishing and self-funding among developers. 64 percent of surveyed developers reported that they are not partnering with a publisher on their current project, while 52 percent revealed that existing company funds provided financial backing. More developers have turned to Kickstarter since last year's survey, as 11 percent of respondents are crowdfunding their current projects, compared to last year's 4 percent.

Italy-based indie studio MixedBag announced that an enhanced and extended version of its wildly colorful rail shooter Futuridium is coming soon to the PlayStation Vita.
Mixing elements from the arcade classic Zaxxon and Commodore 64 shooterUridium, Futuridium is a forward-scrolling shoot-'em-up in which players swoop across the surfaces of massive space dreadnoughts, destroying any obstacles they encounter. Players aim to destroy power cubes during each run through the trenches, eventually revealing the enemy vessel's life-sustaining power core.
Originally released as freeware for Windows and Mac, Futuridium will hit the Vita with a collection of new gameplay modes, new levels, and an overhauled audiovisual presentation. A release date has not been announced.

Infamous: Second Son is one of the first major PS4 exclusives to come to the console since it launched some three months ago, so it's kind of a big deal for Sony. That's why its Euro branch is chucking an Infamous sale at PSN users ahead of the game's launch next month.
If you're totally new to Sucker Punch's elemental open-world action series, but you do want in on the whole caboodle, then the Infamous Collection offers the best value. It includes all three Infa-games - that's Infamous, Infamous 2, and the vampiric standalone expansion Festival of Blood - and it's down by just under half to £15.38/18.89 euros/AU$28.05. If you'd prefer, the three games are all on sale individually, and there's a 10 percent discount on all the purchases for PS Plus members. Check out the full list of discounts on the PS Blog.
That trilogy of games features electric hero/anti-hero Cole McGrath, but Second Son introduces a new, smokier star in Delsin Rowe. As for whether the game is as smoking as its new protagonist, we'll find out when it hits PS4 in a month's time on March 21.

Order up! The next installment in the Wolfenstein series, The New Order, launches on May 20 in North America and on May 23 in Europe, publisher Bethesda Softworks has announced. Wolfenstein: The New Order is the first game from developer MachineGames, founded in 2009 by exiting members ofRiddick-dev Starbreeze.
Bethesda also revealed that pre-ordering The New Order will net players an invite to a beta for Doom, which a Bethesda representative tells Joystiq is "the next Doom game from id Software." Developer id Software first announced a new installment in the franchise, at the time titled Doom 4,in May 2008. Since then, id has muttered nary a word about the next game – save for today's news that, yes, it's still in development. Bethesda promises more information on the beta, which has not been dated, on its official site.
Wolfenstein: The New Order focuses on narrative, eschewing a multiplayer mode in favor of a story that revolves around an alt-history 1960s where the Nazi regime had been victorious in their monstrous World War 2 campaign.
The New Order will launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC alongside Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions.

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva f- that's a little f for Fita, er, Vita - is laying down its handheld beats on March 4 in North America, and March 12 in Europe. The Japanese rhythm game starring the world's most famous virtual pop idol/aqua-haired pop idol is priced at $30 on North America's PS Store.
While the game itself isn't cross-buy, Sega is at least making it so that any DLC purchased for the game's PS3 version will automatically unlock on its Vita sibling, and vice versa. The DLC packs, which include the Snow Miku 2013 set, and the Extra Songs and Extra Character Modules, will all be available when the game launches next month.

When Thief debuts on February 25, the PlayStation 4 incarnation of the stealth-action game will feature graphics at 1080p resolution, while its Xbox One counterpart will offer 900p imagery.
This disparity was revealed by Square Enix in a recent chat with Eurogamer, though the publisher claims that the difference is not glaring. "You really need good eyes to see the difference," said Thief director Nicolas Cantin, before adding that the Xbox One game "is as good as the PS4 version." The big difference, Cantin claims, is found between the older generation of consoles and these newer machines. "We put more detail in, more special effects. But at the same time, we kept the same gameplay experience with the current-gen and the next-gen versions."
Thief is only the most recent example of a big release offering higher resolution graphics on the PlayStation 4. Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes willreportedly run at 1080p on PlayStation 4 and at 720p on Xbox One, while the PS4 version of Call of Duty: Ghosts received a launch day patch to bump its graphics up to 1080p.

Today marks the standalone debut of Freedom Cry, a tale set adjacent to the events of Assassin's Creed 4, and starring Edward Kenway's first mate, Adewale.
Freedom Cry sees Adewale shipwrecked on Haiti, without supplies or a ship full of surly pirates backing his every murderous action. Instead, Adewale must form his own crew while aiding the local slave population in their fight against oppression at the hands of wealthy European landowners. As you'd expect from an Assassin's Creed entry, Adewale spends most of Freedom Cry avoiding a civilized discussion of human rights in the colonial era in favor of acrobatic assassinations and periodic brutal machete killings.
While the original incarnation of Freedom Cry required players to own a copy ofAssassin's Creed 4, this new version does not. Simply visit the PlayStation Network Store, hand over $15 and Adewale's quest is yours. A PC version ofFreedom Cry will feature the same price tag, though that game won't debut until February 25.

Publishing giant Take-Two has told MCV it has no plans to increase the number of Grand Theft Auto games it releases.
The firm launched GTA V last year, which instantly became the fastest selling game in UK history.
But Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says it is important not to over-saturate the market to ensure GTA becomes a permanent franchise. He told MCV that thanks to titles like GTA Online, the publisher doesn’t need to release new versions in order to generate money from the IP.
“It is great that consumers anticipate our titles, like they anticipate the next James Bond film. Our goal is to create permanent franchises,” he said.
“A few years ago, we’d launch a title, it would be sold physically, then we would sell catalogue versions of it. Today we launch a title, and often – if not always – put out DLC. We’ve talked about recurrent consumer spending, where we have offerings where fans can engage and spend money on an on-going basis.
“With GTA V, we have sold 32.5m units in to date, which is extraordinary. 70 per cent of people that have played GTA V while online have played GTA Online, which is a free-to-play experience. And recurrent consumer spending related to GTA Online represented nearly half of our digitally delivered revenue in the quarter. So people are voting that they want to stay engaged and they are voting with their wallets.”

Despite Japan's rich gaming culture, the new consoles that've taken pride of place in your living room are still considered next-gen in the Land of the Rising Sun. While Microsoft still hasn't offered a firm date for the Xbox One's arrival, Sony'sPlayStation 4 makes its Japanese debut this coming weekend. Now, as reparations for the three-month delay, Sony and the snake-charmers (read: game devs) at Kojima Productions have partnered on the first limited edition PS4 console that'll launch exclusively in Japan on March 20th. This "Fox Edition" PS4 has been crafted to celebrate the launch of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, a copy of which'll be bundled with the console for 46,980 yen (around $462) -- the regular console will retail for 41,979 yen (around $413) sans game, since you asked. Unfortunately, this first limited run PS4 is less impressive re-skinning effort, and more, well, boring emblem.

Activision has announced Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark, the game leaked by Amazon last week. It's due out on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, 3DS and PC.Rise of the Dark Spark is described as the "video game complement" to the upcoming Michael Bay movie Transformers: Age of Extinction, and fuses the movie universe Bay has established, with the Cybertron universe. There are over 40 playable characters from both.Plot wise, it's the follow-up to the movie and Activision's previous Transformers games, War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron. According to the official blurb:"Rise of the Dark Spark jumps worlds and factions as it weaves the tale of the hunt for an ancient relic as powerful as the Matrix of Leadership - the Dark Spark. Players will be able to switch between the heroes of the noble Autobots and the nefarious Decepticons throughout the single-player campaign."Expect fast-paced running-and-gunning combat with traversal and vehicle action across open battlefields. On the multiplayer side, Escalation is a wave-based survival mode for up to four players. In it are upgradeable defense systems, enemies you'll recognise from Transformers lore and playable characters old and new. The new leveling system works across single-player and multiplayer to create one persistent character development path.Activision didn't mention which studio was developing the game, but according to a report by The Examiner, the home console version is being made by Edge of Reality, which worked on the Mass Effect Trilogy, the console ports of Dragon Age: Origins and the recent Loadout. The 3DS version is in the works at Way Forward, developer of the recent Ducktales remake, and is described as a strategy RPG. High Moon, Activision's previous go-to studio for Transformers, does not appear to be involved.

Borderlands 3 isn't in development yet, Gearbox Software head Randy Pitchford has said, but more Borderlands is on its way.
Pitchford has lofty aims for a true Borderlands sequel - goals that are perhaps too big for the studio to tackle at this moment in time with other projects under its wing.
"We are not working on Borderlands 3," Pitchford told Polygon. "That is unqualified. We have more to do in the franchise, but no there isn't a Borderlands 3."
He added, "When you think of what Borderlands 3 should be, it should be massive. It should be bigger and better than Borderlands 2. It should carry forward the story. It's probably crazy multiplatform, depending on timing. It would have to be a next-gen game and a current-gen game, if it was coming at any time in the reasonably near future."
Pitchford went on to make Borderlands fans a distinct promise. "I'm not going to **** around with you like Valve does with Half-Life 3," he said.
"We know we want it and we know it should exist, but we don't know what it is yet."
Gearbox has already previously confirmed it is developing two titles for Sony and Microsoft's new consoles within new and original IPs. It's also working in collaboration with Telltale on that studio's 'Tales From the Borderlands' spin-off.
Borderlands 2 will also make its Vita debut this 'Spring' in conjunction with the new PS Vita Slim's North American launch.
And there's more to come, teases Pitchford. "We are doing things in Borderlands that we'll announce soon, that are good, and that I think people will be really excited about if you love the franchise," he said.
Borderlands 2 players will be able to download the Borderlands 2 Headhunter add-on, 'Sir Hammerlock Versus the Son of Crawmerax',from April 15, Gearbox Software confirmed this week.
