highboy has released version 3.0 of his WAV to VAG converter. And if you’re uncertain how to flash the resulting “system_plugin.rco” file; I recommend using Xplora or PSP Filer. Copy “system_plugin.rco” to “flash0:/vsh/resource.”

Unauthorized hacking of the PSP has been a serious problem for Sony ever since enterprising hackers managed to run unsigned code on the PSP-1000 back in 2005. The ability to revert to an unprotected version of the firmware, and later the ability to install completely custom pirate firmware has enabled some owners to play pirated PSP games downloaded from the internet.
By some accounts, developers like Ready at Dawn and Capcom have lost more than 50% of their prospective revenues to software piracy. One estimate has software producers losing more than $4 million per week to piracy. In June, SCEE President David Reeves stated that “There is a piracy problem on the PSP. We know about it, we know how it’s done. It sometimes fuels the growth of hardware sales, but on balance we are not happy about it.”
Clearly, defeating piracy is one of the biggest concerns facing designers at Sony. It appears that the company may be planning to take some drastic steps to deter homebrew on the device with the release of the new PSP-3000 model, but like always, the company remains very secretive about its plans.
The first clue that they have something up their sleeve is the fact that the company recently recalled the extended-life battery peripheral from stores, even though there were no signs that it was selling poorly. The reason for the cancellation is likely the fact that hackers had found a way to create a Pandora battery using an ordinary Sony battery like the one sold as an accessory. Pandora batteries allow hackers and pirates complete access to the PSP firmware, allowing them to override official protections against piracy.
While the PSP-3000 is confirmed to make a small number of great changes to the overall design of the handheld, we suspect that some of the biggest changes will be taking place under the hood, to fight homebrew hackers. The device will probably come equipped with a new battery pack and reboot system that renders the previous “Pandora” attack obsolete. It will also likely contain hardware changes intended to further dissuade reverse-engineering of the console. We suspect that when the PSP-3000 rolls out in October, it will come equipped with a brand new firmware (version 5.0?) containing some aggressive anti-piracy measures.
Will these changes be enough to permanently put a stop to piracy? Unfortunately, this is doubtful. Hackers have shown a great deal of enthusiasm for the device, using it to run gray-area code like emulators and chat clients, but also to pirate software. There is a vibrant and extremely skilled community of hackers poised to tear apart whatever hardware protections Sony decides to implement with the new device. It is almost certainly a matter of time until a hacker like Dark Alex manages to penetrate the secrets of the new PSP-3000. Also, since any new firmware must be backwards-compatible with the PSP Slim and even the PSP-1000, Sony designers are limited in the kinds of protection that they can implement, at least on the software side.

It's not just Metal Gear Online but Konami's online games as a whole that have had a rocky ride online, but Konami is keeping the updates coming.
The recent server maintenance on the game's servers, which have seen several temporary outages in play over the past couple of weeks, has finished and Konami has detailed the changes that you may notice, small though they may be:
"1)Players will gain 5 reward points when they have finished a round in the automatching lobbies 'SNAKE:EX', 'LIQUID:EX' and 'SOLIDUS:EX'.
"*The lobbies 'SNAKE:EX', 'LIQUID:EX' and 'SOLIDUS:EX' are only available for users who have bought the 'MGO GENE EXPANSION'.
"2)A new Survival Lobby 'MK2' has been added." So, all systems go at the moment. Let's hope it stays that way.

Aside from the rather intriguing gameplay features I discussed during my Games Convention preview, one of the most interesting aspects of Ubisoft's upcoming jet fighter Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. is the amount of attention paid to landscapes. Well that intricate detail is all thanks to GeoEye and their IKONOS - the world's first commercial Earth imaging satellite.
Check out the gallery below for some in-game images, along with photographs taken by IKONOS itself. It's an amazing amount of effort to render something you'll spend the entire game avoiding getting too close to.

via The Official Playstation Blog
Since July there have been rumors about a “mystery game that SCEA had up its sleeve.” Well, it’s time to put all that speculation to rest. I am pleased to announce that we will be adding yet another exciting downloadable PS3 title to the PSN lineup: Savage Moon.
Coming exclusively to PLAYSTATION Network this fall, Savage Moon is a frantic, action-packed tower defense game in a gritty sci-fi setting. You are tasked with protecting mining facilities from ravenous space bugs using some truly fearsome weaponry. And you’ll need as much strategy as firepower as you fend off wave after wave.
Each level in Savage Moon is set on an “Imoon”, or a living asteroid, and it is up to you to keep the mining facilities safe. These Imoons are rich in mineral deposits that humanity needs to survive, but such riches come with great risk as the native creatures living there will stop at nothing to end the mining. These giant deadly creatures are called “Insectocytes.” They come in all shapes and sizes and you will need to have a balanced strategy to fend them all off and keep the mining facilities safe.
To defend the mines, you start off with machine gun towers and can expand your arsenal to include wide range of weaponry and heavy artillery. This is where your strategizing skills come into play. It’s up to you when to upgrade, add new towers, or save your money, and your strategies will make the difference between escaping unscathed and watching the mines go up in flames. You have to place the tower defenses in areas where they will be most effective in killing the different kinds of Insectocytes before they make it to the mining facilities. And as you kill the Insectocytes, you earn valuable points that you can use to upgrade the size and firepower of your defenses, and to develop new weapons and technologies.
Savage Moon is addictive and the action is relentless, making it fun no matter what your skill level is. The action is intense, but you also have to think and have a solid strategy to survive. The best players can even post their scores to the online leader boards to see how they stack up.

t's been at least an hour since Sony has released a new PlayStation 3 SKU, so our friends at Joystiq took the time to take a breath. In that moment, they came up with a handy -- and somewhat startling -- chart that explains which PS3 model has what, including Cell chip size (the more efficient and quieter 65nm vs the older 90nm), USB port count, pack-in freebies, and which ones have PS2 backwards compatibility. It's charts like that that remind us that no currently-shipping PS3 comes with HD video cables or PS2 backward compatibility, for better or worse. Hit the read link for the breakdown, and start your fanboy engines.

Personally, I disable key tones or click sounds, whatever you want to call them. In any event, maybe you don’t, and just maybe you want to customize these chimes with extreme ease. Do that with highboy’s WAV to VAG (and vice versa) converter.
Remember: always create a backup of the original RCO file(s) first.

Here's another badly-named application I've made that I made so I could sort the many games and apps on my PSP. You can freely move your games up and down in the list and there is also an option to sort them all alphabetically. There is also a search feature and you can launch your stuff from the app aswell.
I hope somebody else finds this useful and if anyone has any suggestions or comments feel free to post below or send an email to my address in the readme.

This is your captain speaking. Strap on that flight suit, as Sierra Online has cleared Red Baron Arcade for take-off on PlayStation network on Sept. 18, 2008. An intense arcade air combat game with online multiplayer capabilities, Red Baron Arcade follows burgeoning pilots as they take to the unfriendly skies and compete to rise through the ranks of the Red Baron's squadron.
Set in the midst of World War I, Red Baron Arcade pits players against the best pilots of the century in devious dogfights, where they must swoop and dodge their way to victory. Manning the gun turrets on WWI-themed aircraft, players can battle conniving computer AI, or wage war against up to seven other aspiring "Aces" online in Deathmatch, Team-Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag modes.
Co-piloting with the release of Red Baron Arcade will be a free PlayStation Network demo of the game. And as a PlayStation Network first, recruits will get a taste of the multiplayer action to test their acrobatic flying skills against other Red Baron Arcade pilots in a special battle arena available in the Red Baron Arcade demo for up to eight players online.
Red Baron Arcade is rated T for Teen and flies onto PlayStation Network Sept. 18, 2008.

Today, Ubisoft and GeoEye, Inc. announced that GeoEye, a premier provider of satellite, aerial and geospatial information, has provided high-resolution images taken from its commercial Earth-imaging IKONOS satellite for integration into Tom Clancy's HAWX for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the Sony PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and on Windows-based PC. Tom Clancy's HAWX will be available in early 2009.
The HAWX development team is working closely with specialists at GeoEye to integrate realistic satellite images for every location throughout the game, including Rio de Janeiro, Cape Canaveral and the Middle East. With more than 16 international locations in the game, every mission will have players flying over GeoEye-provided satellite imagery in a three-dimensional environment creating an unparalleled, dogfighting experience.
GeoEye's IKONOS satellite was the world's first commercial Earth imaging satellite and its imagery is currently being used for US national security, mapping, air and marine transportation, environmental monitoring and insurance risk management. The amazing quality and detail of the IKONOS images will lend realism to Tom Clancy's HAWX giving gamers a feeling of immersion that will plunge them into the air combat mission of the game.
"High-resolution satellite imaging is moving from the black world of intelligence to the white world of commerce and Tom Clancy's HAWX will bring that reality to gamers," said Mark Brender, vice president, corporate communications and marketing at GeoEye. "With video game graphics becoming more realistic, the use of high-quality photographic ground textures in HAWX adds true photo-realism to the air combat experience."
During the development process the HAWX team has also worked with the U.S. Geological Survey and the Center for Earth Resources Observations and Science (USGS/EROS) to understand how to best create a topographical 'underpinning' for the satellite imagery, creating a very realistic representation of the Earth.
"We are extremely grateful to GeoEye for their collaboration with Ubisoft and pleased with the level of quality and service we've received," said Travis Getz, authenticity coordinator for the HAWX development team. "GeoEye's amazing imagery, combined with the intense aerial combat experience in HAWX, makes this a perfect partnership for everyone--especially gamers."
About Tom Clancy's HAWX
Developed by Ubisoft's Bucharest studio, Tom Clancy's HAWX delivers an intense and authentic aerial combat experience by fully leveraging the benefits of the next-generation platforms. The story begins in the year 2014. As the era of the nation-state draws quickly to a close, the rules of warfare evolve even more rapidly. More and more nations become increasingly dependent on private military companies (PMCs), elite mercenaries with a lax view of the law. The Reykjavik Accords further legitimize their existence by authorizing their right to serve in every aspect of military operations. While the benefits of such PMCs are apparent, growing concerns surrounding giving them too much power begin to mount.
Tom Clancy's HAWX is the first air combat game set in the world-renowned Tom Clancy video game universe. Cutting-edge technology, devastating firepower and intense dogfights bestow upon this new title a deserving place in the prestigious Tom Clancy franchise. Soon, flying at Mach 3 becomes a right, not a privilege.

If you've been amazed by the technical prowess of MGS4, you may have been saddened to know that the title was the last game in the series. Or was it? In an interview with Kotaku, former Assistant Producer at Kojima Productions Ryan Payton (widely credited with the Westernized control scheme for MGS4), mentioned his reasons for leaving the company and memories of developing the acclaimed title. At the very end of the interview, he revealed something that all Metal Gear fans wanted to hear. "It'll be hard not being involved in MGS5, but I've got the utmost confidence that Hideo Kojima, Ken Imaizumi, and our amazing team will put together another blockbuster game. I'll be cheering from the sidelines," Payton said.
This isn't the only Metal Gear news that has been released recently. According to an interview with Eurogamer, Hideo Kojima himself noted that MGS4 probably isn't possible to be made on the 360 because of the optimization for the PS3, physical media differences between Blu-ray and DVD and technology issues. However, he did mention that technological issues might not be a problem farther along in the future. "If the hardware technology rises then obviously, you know, [my future games] won't be based on the hardware anymore. Probably I will first create the software and then, um, it's a strange word to say, but port to other hardware if that technological ability rises in all areas," Kojima said.
Kojima also seemed to be annoyed about the seemingly constant focus on the PS3 vs 360, stating that the argument over exclusivity detracted from the game itself. "What kind of disturbs me sometimes, because a lot of people ask me about this PS3/360 question, is that it's not about the hardware - I want people to look at the game itself. Sometimes I even feel like it should be on a PC so that people don't ask me about hardware and platforms," Kojima mentioned. "In the near future I hope they'll ask me about Metal Gear, about us, about our future projects, and will stop caring about the hardware."
We contacted Konami for comment on the "announcement" of Metal Gear Solid 5, but received no word as of the publishing of this news.

What a crappy way to start a Tuesday. The IGN PlayStation Team just sauntered into the office, turned on its PlayStation 3s, and discovered that the network is down. "Use of the PlayStation Network has been suspended," a pop-up states. "Try to sign in again later."
Our immediate response was to go all Lord of the Flies -- Clements has been sacrificed, Roper has made a throne of old boxes, Jeff is blowing in a sea shell, and everyone's calling Greg "Piggy" -- but Sony says the outage is just for "standard maintenance."
The network should be back up soon.

Capcom's retro reimagining of the NES classic Bionic Commando has been keenly met, shifting some 130,000 copies since its release on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and PC a mere seven days ago.
A canny reprising of the classic franchise before it's treated to a brand new outing early next year, Bionic Commando Rearmed has proven a hit with critics, scaling the heights of our own scoring system with a mighty 9.4. Producer Ben Judd seemed suitably ebullient when breaking the news on the game's official blog.
"Basically, we have set a standard in digital gaming. Consumers voted with their dollars. They have sent the message loud and clear - We are tired of meta-emulated crap; we want the titles of yesteryear to be paid the proper respect; we want them done right, and if the price is right, we'll buy. The bar has been raised."

Purchased the 80GB Core PS3 unit this evening at local Best Buy.
Here's what I've confirmed:
Model number is CECHK01, which has not been updated on Sony's official list of PS3 models yet. According to the manual, power consumption is rated at a max of 280 watts, same as the 40GB model.
However, I ran the 80GB Core unit into a Kill-a-watt and confirmed that the power draw is SLIGHTLY lower (10%) than the 40GB unit.
40GB PS3:
* XMB idle - 125.8 watts
* DVD playback - 141.2 watts
* PS3 MGS4 - 155.2 watts
80GB PS3 Core:
* XMB idle - 111.9 watts
* DVD playback - 126.0 watts
* PS3 MGS4 - 130.0 watts
80GB PS3 MGS4 Bundle:
* XMB idle - 180 watts
* Bluray Playback - 182 watts
* DVD playback - 197 watts
* Game (MGS4) - 200 watts

When a game is all finished up and burned to the disc that you'll eventually pop into your console, it also needs a couple other things to get it safely to store shelves and into your hands: a box, an instruction manual of some sort, and, perhaps most importantly, a good cover to not only set the mood but wrangle in potential gamers as well.
One game that's going to need some sort of cover for its release later this year is Resistance 2. Or, more specifically, the Collector's Edition of the game. The problem is that Insomniac has narrowed the choice down to three potential covers, but the studio can't seem to make up its mind. So they're turning to you.
Here's what Ted Price, president and CEO of Insomniac Games, has to say about the conundrum:
"Insomniac takes community feedback seriously. We interview our fans on the Full Moon Show podcast. We created an R&D website serving aspiring game developers. And we hang out on the forums until the wee hours. We've even polled fans to select which hapless animal enemies turn into when firing the Morph-O-Ray in Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (sorry, penguin-lovers).
"Now, we turn to the community with an even bigger question: Which image do you want to see on your Resistance 2 Collector's Edition cover? While you may think developing the game is our biggest challenge at Insomniac, we agonize almost equally over important details like creating and choosing the box art. And this time, we've got three solid images that are making the decision especially difficult. We're torn, and want to know what you think. So vote! We'll be eagerly awaiting your feedback, as always."
Here are the three images. Click on each image for a larger version, and then vote by clicking one of the email links below. And hurry, because you won't be able to vote for long.
