Macross Ace Frontier is gearing up for an October 9 PSP release over in Japan. Bandai Namco has turned the marketing machine into overdrive, and today shared a bunch of new screens and art, along with a list of songs that will feature in the game.
As anyone who's seen the anime will tell you, Macross has somewhat of a strong bond with music. The game will reflect that with a mix of vocal and instrumental tracks.
Fans should see if they remember any of these:
Macross, Macross: Do You Remember Love
Watashi no Kare wa Pilot (Mari Ijima)
Ai: Oboeteimasuka (Mari Ijima)
Shao Pai Long (BGM only)
Unmei no Ya (BGM only)
Macross (BGM only)
Dog Fighter (BGM only)
Zentradi Daiyousai (BGM only)
Macross Plus
Information High (with vocals)
After, In the Dark (BGM only)
Fly Up in the Air Tension (BGM only)
Macross 7
Totsugeki Love Heart (Fire Bomber)
Holy Lonely Light (Fire Bomber)
My Friends (Fire Bomber)
Try Again (Fire Bomber)
Planet Dance (BGM only)
Macross Frontier
Lion (May'n/Ai Nakajima)
Iteza Gogo Kuji DON'T BE LATE (Sheryl Nome starring May'n)
Aimo (BGM only)
Triangler (BGM only)
Target the (BGM only)
As indicated by the source list for the songs, Ace Frontier pulls its content from the entire Macross universe. The same seems to hold true for its gameplay systems, as the game includes a unique battle system that's based around Macross 7.
Players make use of this system exclusively when piloting as Macross 7's Basara Nekki. Rater than pummelling his opponents with missile barrages, Basara Nekki fights with music. To defeat your enemies, you sing, making their "will to fight" guage deplete. Once this guage has reached zero, the enemy will flee.
The new media Namco Bandai handed out today show a variety of mecha and characters along with the Ace Frontier official illustration. For importers, this will hopefully be enough to hold you over until the October 9 release.

Screen 1: Edit a whole bunch of parameters
Description
PSParticlePlayer is an MP3 player featuring some nice graphics, think of it as a Screensaver or Eye-Catcher playing some music for you. OK, PSParticlePlayer is just a bit more than that, at first it was developed as a Particle Engine Editor (and it still is) for the upcoming PGE game engine release. Spiced up with some MP3 playing functionality it is the app you have sitting in front of you :-)

Notes
Read the readme.txt for installation notes and button configuration.
Sourcecode will be released when the PGE game engine is out.

http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/ne...at-peak/?biz=1
While Sony has already made big strides in 2008 and the company's gaming division did record a profit of about $51 million during its last quarter (April-June) based on stronger sales of PS3 hardware and software, it's no secret that the expensive PS3 has been a loss leader for the company. In 2008, Sony lost $1.16 billion and in 2007 the company lost $2.16 billion, meaning that overall the PS3 investment has cost Sony over $3.3 billion.
What's really surprising, however, is that Sony has already hemorrhaged more cash on the PS3 than it made selling PlayStation 2s during the entire five years of its peak. This comes from industry veteran David Perry, who cited new data from DFC Intelligence during a speech at the Games Convention in Leipzig. Perry, according to 1UP, was talking about how Sony has invested an enormous amount in this console generation and to make the most of it the company will likely extend this cycle as far as it can – even longer than the PS2.
Like most hardware in the typical "razor and blades" business model, Sony did lose money on the PS2 initially as well, but it didn't take long for Sony to streamline the system, make it profitable and then of course the company went on to sell over 120 million units worldwide. If Sony can follow a similar pattern, maybe just maybe they'll be able to breakeven (or even profit) on the massive PS3 investment.

Dark Alex is back with a new release of the excellent app for the PSP:
Just when you thought unbricking couldn't get any better - It does.
From the readme (abridged):
Changes in version 7
- A format flash function has been added which is usefull to correct problems in some psp that get an error when installing 4.01 M33, or to have a custom partitioning of the flash.
- An idstorage tools function has been addded. It allows to create a new idstorage (including for first time, the regeneration of region and umd keys), change region (including umd region), or fix wlan mac address.
More info about the two new added functions below.
Installation:
- DC iplloader doesn't require to mspformat the memory stick.
However, in some memory stick it may still be necessary.
Just run the program and if you find an error at 99%, run mspformat and try again.
- Copy DC7 to PSP/GAME/
- Download Sony 4.01 update eboot and copy it to ms rootwith the name 401.PBP
- If you have a PTF custom theme set, quit it before running the program.
- Use the app under a 3.x/4.x kernel. The program may not work in versions prior to 3.03 OE.
- IF timemachine is installed in this memory stick, the program will ask you at the end which button(s) you want to boot DC7, otherwise no buttons will be necessary.
- Now you have an universal pandora ms ready to go, and you just need a proper
battery. If you have 1.50 kernel access, use c+d tool. Otherwise, use corly149 tool.
Battery and ms will work on all psp except the very latest ta-88.
New features
- Lflash format (in nand operations menu)
This function performs a physical format of the lflash, creates the 4 partitions again, with the
user desired sizes (by default, they are set to the default of that system), and then performs
a logical format of the 4 partitions.
This function allows to fix some errors that appear in 4.01 M33 installation: Error assigning flashX, psp not booting after installing 4.01 M33, etc.
It is also useful for fat users that want to make flash0 bigger by making the other partitions smaller.
Note: the sizes shown in the menu refer to the size of the physical partition. The size of the
logical partition maybe a bit smaller.
No need to say that this operations deletes current content of flash. After lflash format, the
flash is empty, you need to install 4.01 M33/OFW.
- Create new idstorage (in nand operations menu, idstorage tools)
This function destroys the current idstorage (if any), and creates a new one.
It is useful when your idstorage has been corrupted and you didn't have a backup like hapenned to me with one psp
Keys restore: common keys, and for first time region/openpsid/dnas/certificate keys and umd keys.
What will and won't work after this?
UMD: yes.
Set time via internet (DNAS): yes
adhoc: not tested, but hopefully it will work
psn games: not tested but it should work. However your current bought games will not work, as your psp will be identified as a new device.
usb: yes, your psp and ps3 will detect it as a new device because the psp identifier (psid) has changed.
magicgate (drm videos/audio): it has not been tested, but it should NOT work, as a way to generate magicgates keys (0x10-0x13) has not been found (yet).
First step: select a region for your new idstorage. If your region is not there, just select
whatever one, also if it is there, you can select another one if you want
The region affects also umd videos/audios.
Second step (optional): Press enter button to find real mac address (wifi switch must be on).
If this step fails, then just press -> to continue and a random mac will be generated (in this case after idstorage creation, shutdown the psp, restart DC and goto idstorage tools -> fix mac, this time it should work unless there is a hardware problem).
Last step is to press enter, and your new idstorage will be created.
- Change region ((in nand operations menu, idstorage tools)
This allows to change the region of the psp and the umd drive. After this, your psp will be able to play umd's of other region.
As a side effect, your psp will be identified as a new device, so you'll have to download/buy
psn games again, configure ps3 remote control again, etc.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/...aystation-edu/
The games industry is always on the look-out for new, talented engineers and programmers who understand how the hardware works under the hood. However, it isn’t possible to buy a PlayStation development kit at your local computer store and development for the PlayStation has remained a mystery, even to very interested individuals. It gives me great pleasure to unveil the mystery and announce the PlayStation-edu program! We expect this program to be a great tool to teach students about the PlayStation platforms.
PlayStation-edu is a program for universities and colleges to get access to PS2 and PSP development kits…the same ones that professional developers use to make the games you love to play. You get the development software, the hardware, and the SDK to learn and experiment with. SCEA wants to make sure that students who are graduating from college are ready to program on PlayStation hardware and that means getting it into your hands.
PlayStation-edu is not a general game creation program (sorry artists and designers). It is for computer science and engineering students who want to understand how the hardware works in the PlayStation consoles. Schools which teach game programming or computer architecture can use the development kits in their classes. Participants will get demo code and samples, as well as documentation about how things work. We want the dev kits used in the classroom! Students in PlayStation-edu will have access to our support web site where they can talk with other students in the program on our forums.
Of course, there are a couple caveats (aren’t there always?): Yes, your school will need to sign some legal agreements with us and yes, “get access to” means that your school will need to purchase the hardware.
For more information and application information, educators may contact me (Mark Danks) at applications@psp-edu.scedev.net. Only requests for applications from qualified school representatives will be responded to, so any students reading this should have their teacher submit the request. Also, this is only for universities and colleges, so high school students will need to wait a few years.
We are looking forward to hearing from you and seeing what you can create!

Well, it's always a good idea to eavesdrop when you're an attentive, info-seeking games journalist.
The Videogaming247 blog apparently heard a few guys talking about Sony's PlayStation Home initiative while on the train to Leipzig for the Games Convention this week. So far, we've had plenty of details on the innovative online service, but the history of the project remains quite hazy. Well, according to what was overheard, it seems that Home was originally a PS2 initiative; obviously, they never got the Network to where they needed it to be during the last generation. But after 5 years in development and £40 million spent on Home, it's probably time to unveil this bad boy. That 5 years and £40 million part came from the mystery conversation as well, but it's not out of the realm of possibility. Sony is always looking well down the road in each generation, so to hear Home has been bouncing around the minds of Sony executives for the past five years isn't really surprising.
Quite clearly, none of this is official, but it does give us a little more insight into PlayStation Home's origins. And now, it appears as if they're finally ready to deliver this most ambitious service to a new generation of gamers...get ready; the open beta is headed our way this fall. At least, it had better be.

The PS3 port of highly-acclaimed 360 and PC FPS BioShock has been dated for October 21 in the US, and internationally on October 24.
The PS3 version, which is being handled by Dark Sector dev Digital Extremes, is set to feature new content in the form of a 'Survivor' difficulty mode and downloadable 'Challenge Rooms' which test your plasmid skills.
And yes, BioShock PS3 also sports full Trophy support, before you ask.
"We are proud to introduce 2K Games' showcase title, BioShock, to an entirely new audience," said 2K president Christoph Hartmann on the date news.
"With the addition of the new Add-On Game Content we are able to extend the award-winning adventure while maintaining the perfect harmony that millions of players around the world have fallen in love with."

Yesterday we posted scans from Famitsu PS3 of Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. The quality on some of them was not very good! (Though, some of them were high quality scans.) Today we bring you high quality scans — with some new stuff peppered in. Like the armpit of FFXIII heroine Lightning. Just check that out and the gallery below. High quality, baby!

A demo for Monster Madness: Grave Danger hit PSN last week, giving you a taster of the first level. Here are a selection of screens from some of the 25 bonus mini-games.
SouthPeak explains some of them: "They include: White Water Swanning - race down the river rapids in your swan boat, Zombie Cats - burn zombie cats for fun, The Crate Escape - survive the trip down giant industrial conveyor belts and traps and UFO Shooter - Destroy the monsters with your UFO.
"Q3" 2008 is as specific as it gets with a release date.

Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty is a 3,181MB download, we can report. Because we're downloading a review copy and have nothing better to do in the meantime.
Insomniac Games' latest PS3-exclusive is due out this Thursday, 21st August, and will cost GBP 9.99 on the PlayStation Store.
If you prefer, you can also buy it on Blu-ray in Europe from 12th September, and you won't have to pay a penny more. Unless you tell them to keep the change.
Quest for Booty is a 3D platformer that picks up where Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction left off, with Clank off with the Zoni and Ratchet on a mission to save him.

At a keynote session during this year's GC Developer Conference, taking place in Leipzig, Germany, Crytek president and CEO Cevat Yerli revealed his belief that the new next generation of consoles from Microsoft and Sony will hit the market in 3-4 years' time.
"The PlayStation 4 and Xbox '720' will arrive in 2011 or 2012, we think," said Yerli. "But this is just our estimate - we don't know, and even if Microsoft and Sony told us, I couldn't say because it would be under NDA.
"But we think in three to four years' time, although there are good reasons why it should be 2010 already...but we'll see."
Yerli, giving a talk on "The Future of Gaming Graphics", also explained Crytek's plans for a new version of its in-house engine to be released in 2012, but stated his belief that the effective current gaming maximums would remain at resolutions of 1920x1080 and 60 frames per second until that time.
He also added that he believed GPUs and CPUs were on a collision course, with the former becoming more effective at general computing, and the latter more effective at parallel tasks - and that software such as DirectX 11 would help that collision to happen towards the end of 2009.
The first title to use Crytek's current development technology, CryEngine2, was last year's Crysis, with a new title - Crysis: Warhead - to be released in a few weeks. CryEngine 2 took 25 engineers four years to put together, and used the original CryEngine as a base - which itself took an average of 20 engineers three years to build.
An exclusive interview with Cevat Yerli will be published on GamesIndustry.biz tomorrow.

Slasher has posted an entry into the Neoflash Coding Contest;
Blob Volleyball is a heavily physics-based volleyball copycat using the incredible JelloPhysics library in which you must fling the ball over to the opponents side of the net. For every successful point against the opponent, you gain 50 points; and for every score your opponent gets, you lose 50 points. You must not allow your score to go below 0, or else it is game over for you. Each opponent requires 5 successful serves against them in order to move on to the next opponent. This game features a loopable song which can be placed in the ms0:/MUSIC/ folder, and this game can also play your favourite mp3s located in the ms0:/MUSIC/ folder as well.
The controls are as follows:
Left -> Move your blob to the left
Right -> Move your blob to the right
Up -> Jump your blob
Circle -> Drop ball for your serve
Right Trigger -> "Bulge" your blob to fling the ball
SQUARE + (Left Trigger or Right Trigger) -> Switch between the currently playing mp3s
Select -> Pause the game
If you have the motion kit plugged in, the only thing supported so far is tilting left/right to move your blob. You may also fling the psp upwards to jump your blob.
This game also provides a multiplayer mode that requires 2 people to play on one psp. The controls are as follows for multiplayer games:
Left -> Move player1 blob to the left
Right -> Move player1 blob to the right
Up -> Jump player1 blob
Down -> Drop ball for player1 serve
Left Trigger -> "Bulge" player1 blob to fling the ball
Square -> Move player2 blob to the left
Circle -> Move player2 blob to the right
Triangle -> Jump player2 blob
Cross -> Drop ball for player2 serve
Right Trigger -> "Bulge" player2 blob to fling the ball
Select -> Pause the game
You can view a video of the game here.
(I will also provide a screenshot in a bit)
This game should be compatible in both the 1.50 and 3.xx/4.xx kernel.
Alot of the inspiration came from a game called slime volleyball which is readily available on the internet, so I would like to give a nice big shout out to that game.
I would also like to formally thank
- Thanks caliarbor for MP3 ME Player & sakya for LightMP3
- Thanks Raphael for motion kit driver & support
- Thanks Drakon for both porting the JelloPhysics library and for all of the help you provided to me, I couldn't have done it without you!
