Yes I know this is a bitter sounding news post but why not let the ranting out now rather than let it ruin a weekend……
So the HOME Beta Emails were sent out to those lucky few. Some people were not as lucky.
To quote from the email that was sent out…“We’ve chosen to offer access to Home to a select number of PLAYSTATION®3 owners, and as a valued member of PLAYSTATION®Network, you have been selected”
Now SCEE define valued please because looking at the forums and other news sites it seems people who have signed up to the PSN in 2008 and have less than 5 posts in the forums seem to have had more success than the likes of the owners who have had membership since late 2006 and spend more than a £1000 on PSN and BD games (not forgetting the BD films), lets not forget the amount of time these people spend online with their purchases.
Lets also remember that feature on the playstation website were you can add what hardware and software you own (of which I keep up to date religiously). It seems that feature is also worthless and pretty pointless.
So what did get you into the HOME Beta this month? I spoke to a friend at SONY in London and he told me that most people who bought MGS4 are the chosen ones. I can counter that claim tho so it may not be 100% true, but as I have spent over £1000 on PS3 titles and spent hours online the only game I did not purchase was MGS4, maybe it is true.
I wonder if Dan Hill - Home Service Manager can shed light on this outrageous situation? After all the Americans had to do something to have a chance of getting access to Home and that was a simple download of the HOME theme. Europeans are being chosen on some other ideals.
Lets just look back at some of the BETA testing and the testers that were chosen. Lets start with Warhawk. What a mess that was when released to the public, wtf were the Beta testers doing… messing about no doubt and rolling around IRC channels gloating they have beta, I suppose SONY chose those BETA testers via some arcane method.
So I can only see a “pending FAIL” if all the users are generally not bothered about the BETA side of things and just want to run about doing nothing to make the service more robust, youre not going to help the community are you!
So maybe in the future SONY get some proper testers in on the action, people who actually understand what being a BETA tester is all about.
Lets not forget about those people who were already on the Home Trial before events of the last day or 2, I know about 3 people who never use it at all, should you go through the accounts and remove those “dead” users to make room for more?
Please let us know if you have access and what you think you did right to get in on the action in the comments below.

With the next phase of PlayStation Home construction getting underway, we now have a clear picture of the region restrictions placed on the virtual world, at least those being implemented for the expanded beta. Users are apparently being matched to servers based on their consoles' native regions (which are not configurable), PS3 Fanboy reports. While this peculiar restriction will only affect the small percentage of PlayStation 3 owners whose consoles were imported from other regions, it counters the open access granted to PlayStation Store users, who can shop in any Store region from anywhere by setting up PSN accounts based in different regions. The Home region restrictions also mean that make-believers won't be mingling internationally nor will they be able to sign into their Japanese PSN IDs from an American console, for example, and hop onto a Japanese server.
PS3 Fanboy points out that the obvious explanation for the lockdown is optimized advertising. There's no sense in pushing American products on a UK gamer who is bird watching on a US server. Still, we're holding onto hope for some cross-regional opportunities, like tournaments or maybe exchange programs. Who's up for a semester in the Caribbean Home?

Next Thursday marks the release of Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty, the downloadable romp that extends the story that began in Ratchet & Clank Future (read our review of Quest for Booty right here). It turns out that not only does the game give you a new dose of platforming action, but it teases the next release as well.
After finishing the game, Insomniac tells us simply "The adventure continues Fall 2009". While we now know the date of the next release, we don't actually know what form it will be in, be it either another downloadable episode or a full-blown release, though we expect the latter. Sony representatives wouldn't tell us its form either, so we'll have to wait a bit longer to find out exactly what sort of game we should be expecting.
But at the very least, we know we'll be playing more Ratchet in just over a year.

Here's a new trailer for Artoon's vampire-infested stealth action game, Vampire Rain: Altered Species on PS3.
Set in the suburbs of a west-coast US city, the plot details a battle between humans and the Nightwalkers - your traditional blood-sucking vampire race.
"Gamers take the role of John Lloyd, a member of a US special government unit created to defeat the Nightwalkers, and the only human to ever survive a physical encounter with them," explains the release.
The Xbox 360 version was, to be fair, rubbish. But the PS3 entry's promising 50 hours of story-driven campaign gameplay, and a "robust multiplayer mode", so who knows it could surprise us.

via Eurogamer
Monster Madness: Grave Danger for PS3 will be released on 5th September.
Grave Danger promises to improve significantly on the fairly rubbish Xbox 360 original. There are loads more weapon power-ups, a better camera system, 25 mini-game challenges, and full four-player campaign co-operative play.
Monster Madness is similar to Zombies Ate My Neighbours and games like Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3. The undead invade suburbia and a quartet of unlikely teenage stereotypes pick up all manner of objects and guns to become heroes.
SouthPeak released a PS3 demo for Monster Madness: Grave Danger yesterday, which should give you a better idea of what to expect.

August 15th, 2008, 16:11 Posted By: wraggster
News/release from Nherve:
Hi,
I've written a DEV9 plugin that emulates HDD.
DEV9 is a part of the PS2 that handles USB, HDD and Ethernet.
In PCSX2, USB is handled by a USB plugin, HDD and Ethernet are handled by a DEV9 plugin.
To get it working :
1- Put MegaDev9.dll in the plugins folder of PCSX2 (NOT THE ROOT FOLDER), otherwise it won't
show up in the plugins list. The plugin doesn't require any external DLL to work.
2- Make sure you've a DEV9-capable PS2 BIOS. Slim PS2 BIOSes aren't compatible, your HDD
programs will always think the HDD isn't formatted (Thanks to Suloku for this info), and BIOSes
from old PS2s with PCMCIA may cause problems too. You must also have the EROM, ROM1 and ROM2
files with your BIOS. In other words, you must have a complete BIOS dump from your PS2. Don't
complain that the plugin doesn't work if you're using a downloaded (illegal) BIOS.
3- Configure the plugin. For that you must launch PCSX2, select MegaDev9 in the DEV9 plugins
list and click on the Configure button. A GUI will show up, here's its description :
-Enable logging : this is only for debugging purposes. The plugin will write all events
to a file.
-HDD file : enter the path and the name of the HDD image (see below for more info about
HDD image). If you leave it, the image will be created in the PCSX2 root folder.
-HDD size : select the size you want for the emulated HDD (HDD image). You can choose
from 1 GB to 127 GBs. I recommend selecting at least 8 GBs, lewer sizes could cause problems.
4- Launch your program. The first time, the HDD image will be created in the path that you
previously configured. Then your program will ask for formatting if it's able to do this. If
you followed the previous steps right, your program won't ask for formatting anymore, nor other
programs will do.
The HDD image is a file that will be used as a HDD, ie. when your program writes data in the
HDD, the plugin will write these data in this file. Don't delete or move it without
reconfiguring the HDD file path in the plugin, or you may cause problems.
Troubleshooting
Note : if your problem persists or if it's not described here, tell it to me. Attach a log file
if possible.
My program always asks for formatting.
If you've this problem, make sure you've a complete BIOS dump from a DEV9-capable PS2. The
first models with PCMCIA aren't DEV9-capable, and the slim PS2s aren't too. Make sure the
console doesn't tell it couldn't find rom1, rom2 or erom, these files are needed.
My program fails writing to the HDD.
Make sure you've enough space on your real HDD and also that the HDD image is big enough. Make
sure the HDD image doesn't have read-only attribute.
When I use savestates, I've problems with HDD funcs in my program.
That's normal, savestates aren't supported yet.
When I use the HDD command X, it doesn't work, it reports an error.
The command you're trying to use isn't implemented, or you're passing invalid args.
How can I copy games with HDLoader ?
You can't do this for the moment, except if GiGaHeRz's CDVD plugin works for you (it supports
changing DVD on the fly).
Note :
I designed the plugin to be as many portable as possible. The only Win32-only thing is the GUI.
If somebody is interested in porting the plugin for Linux, he's free to do it. Isolate all the
Win32-specific code snippets with #ifdef / #endif tags.
Changelog :
Version 1.0.0
First version, support for HDD emulation.
Download the plugin and its sources in the attachments.
Credits to :
- Sources of PS2SDK and DEV9Linuz, without them I think I couldn't have figured out how DEV9 works.
- Various documents explaining how PC IDE controllers work, the DEV9 one works identically
- Suloku for pointing the compatibility problems with slim PS2 BIOSes.

US-based PS3 owners who were annoyed that Sony's PlayTV TV recorder won't be coming to NTSC-land can cheer up a bit. Sony has decided to redress the balance by making the PlayTV rubbish.
When we first heard about the PlayTV's ability to record TV while you played it sounded great and the decision to allow 'format shifting' of recordings to other devices was a real sea-change for the usually clenched Sony.
Sadly, it is back to tense-buttocked business as usual. Sony has announced that PlayTV owners will now only be able to stream recordings to a PSP using Remote Play. No reason, just because, although the usual concerns about intellectual property and loss of advertising revenue will doubtless be trotted out at some point.
Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory...

We were semi-surprised that the PSP hardware update contained so few external changes, but now that we've seen Sony's plan for the system, it all makes sense. Their ten year shelf-life plan for the PS2 and PS3 apparently also applies to the PSP platform, which according to them, "[does] not have a planned obsolescence strategy." Good news for current PSP owners since they won't have to upgrade their units for another three to four years at least.
