A nine year-old Canadian who is frequently hospitalised due to ongoing digestive issues has found some comfort by accessing his PS4 via Remote Play.
PlayStation fan Felix Morais HarveyPlayStation fan Felix Morais Harvey, of New Brunswick, frequently travels some 500 miles to a hospital in Montreal that can assist with his problems digesting food. His latest biopsy showed that his intestine does not contain nerve cells.
Though Harvey can't install his PlayStation 4 console in the hospital, the Remote Play feature on PS Vita has given him the chance to play titles such as Infamous: Second Son.
PlayStation fan websiteDualshockers says Harvey and his father didn't expect Remote Play would work at such a distance from home.
"It took a little while to connect, and it failed once or twice, but then the UI of the PS4 actually came up on the screen," the report writes.
"It was a little glitchy and pixelated at first but stabilized after a minute or two. Felix was then able to play and never complained about disconnections since."
Harvey, whose condition means he's home-schooled, is often hospitalised for up to seven hours at a time. His family haveset up a Fundrazr page for people to help with the hospital fees.
His father, Alexis, has sent messages of thanks to PlayStation on Twitter.

Blizzard is measuring interest in a second expansion toDiablo 3 through player surveys reportedly circulating now.
NeoGAF user Nirolak posted a screenshot of the survey question, which asks "How interested would you be in playing a second expansion to Diablo III?" then lets respondents select from "Not at all interested" to "Extremely interested". The rest of the survey reportedly asks about player satisfaction with Diablo 3 and other games.
Blizzard told Videogamer.com in March that it was "still evaluating" whether to develop more expansions for the action RPG.
An extensive Diablo 3 update went live earlier in April, covering bug fixes and updates to features including classes, crafting, items, monsters, quests and the UI.
CVG's 7/10 Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls review concluded: "Offering rebalanced systems, increased level caps and a new class, Reaper of Souls is worth one last crusade if you can stomach the price."
Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls sales topped 2.7 million units in the expansion's first week of availability, according to Activision Blizzard. In November, Blizzard said lifetime Diablo 3 sales across all platforms had reached 14 million units.

April 27th, 2014, 21:54 Posted By: wraggster
Sony's handheld might not be selling well, but it is popular, says Rob Fahey
Sony Computer Entertainment
Sony Computer Entertainment is a Japanese videogame company specialising in a variety of areas in the...
playstation.com
Sales of PlayStation Vita in the USA during March were hovering around the 10,000 mark. Whatever trouble the Wii U may be facing in that market (and it's facing plenty), Vita is in a much tougher position. Week to week, there are fewer Vitas being sold in the USA than original Wii consoles, let alone Wii Us. Back of the envelope calculations suggest that on average, stores stocking the Vita are selling less than two consoles a month; the reality is probably tougher for most, given that stores like Amazon will have accounted for the lion's share of purchases. In many retail stores across America, a Vita probably hasn't been sold in the past month at all.
Disaster, right? It's certainly not the position Sony would have wanted for its latest handheld. Its performance is massively behind that of its older stablemate, the PlayStation Portable, at the same point in its life; and the PSP itself wasn't considered an enormously successful platform, as it was eclipsed throughout its life by the Nintendo DS and struggled to maintain a decent tie ratio for software sales. Now the same story seems to be repeating. 3DS is doing remarkably well for Nintendo, and maintaining healthy software sales along the way; Vita is underperforming, assailed on one side by Nintendo's continuing success and on the other by tablets and smartphones which are encroaching into the core gaming space.
So goes the conventional argument which ends up saying "Vita is a bust". There are, however, other factors worthy of consideration here, and I don't think that we should expect Sony to cash in its chips on the Vita platform any time soon. Moreover, I don't think developers will be abandoning Vita any time soon. Instead, I think the type of developer targeting Vita is changing; and it may, surprisingly, end up being a change for the best.
"if you're a smaller developer making indie games, Vita is an increasingly intriguing option... Developers have told me that Vita is among their best-selling platforms, despite the low installed base"
Let's look at some other factors in Vita's performance. Firstly, a blanket statement - Vita isn't doing well by any measure. Global sales of the console aren't good - it's tracking ahead of the Wii U at the moment, but celebrating that fact would be like triumphantly announcing your victory in a battle of wits against a rock. It's likely that PS4's sales will overtake Vita within the next six weeks; Xbox One will quite possibly do the same within the first half of this year. As for the comparison with the 3DS, don't even ask. It's simply embarrassing.
There are, however, bright spots in this story. For a start, things look worse than they ought for the simple fact that the USA is the primary focus of the games media's attention. Even overseas media outlets are guilty of a US-centric approach, not least due to the dominance of US-owned websites, but also due to the ready availability of figures and expert commentary from the US market. As a result, everything from the NPD sales report to the various pronouncements of analysts like Michael Pachter is reported around the world, leading to a slightly skewed viewpoint that sometimes forgets that the US is a minority market; the largest market, certainly, but dwarfed by the rest of the world and actually rather unique and unusual in its tastes and purchasing decisions, by global standards.
Vita is having a disastrous time in the USA, but that's the baseline; rock bottom. In Europe, Vita is selling at three or four times the rate of its US sales. In Japan, it's doing ten times the US numbers. Ten times "dreadful" is still in the "mediocre" range, but if Vita were to sell globally at some midpoint between its Japanese and European performance, it would be comfortably outpacing sales of its predecessor, the PSP. Moreover, it implies a very different market for the console in different territories. In Japan, where handheld gaming has traditionally held an edge over home console gaming (for various reasons ranging from the simple "living rooms here are tiny" through to more complex and interesting social factors), Vita is attracting a reasonably large audience of core gamers - what we might think of generally as the PlayStation demographic. In the USA, it's attracting a very hardcore minority, while Europe lies somewhere in between. That western demographic, focused on very core experiences, is a particularly interesting niche. It's an audience of people whose interest in the Vita is, I believe, based heavily on the growing library of indie and retro titles for the platform, as well as on its interaction with the PS4 (for which many of these gamers are probably also early adopters).
That leads to the other important factor in this discussion. If you're a publisher making expensive AAA games, you've probably all but written off the Vita already; not without good reason. The installed base is small, the growth curve is negative and as retailers cut back on Vita's shelf space (which they will obviously do if they're only selling one or two per month), they'll also be cutting back on the chance of major new games getting a significant retail presence. With limited resources at their disposal, publishers will quite rightly look at the rapid growth of PS4, the strong position of 3DS and the solid performance of Xbox One, not to mention the potential of PC, tablet and smartphones, and decide that Vita isn't the right place to place a bet.
On the other hand, if you're a smaller developer making indie games, Vita is an increasingly intriguing option. An installed base of 8 million doesn't look appealing if you're a publisher with a mainstream title hoping for a multi-million seller - but indie developers ought to be concerned with the quality of the audience on offer, not just the quantity. Speak to indie teams with experience of the Vita, and you often find that they're full of praise for the platform. Among those 8 million Vita owners, it seems, are a huge number of devoted core gamers who proactively seek out interesting indie experiences and are heavy users of the PlayStation Network online store. Developers have told me that Vita is among their best-selling platforms, despite the low installed base.
This puts Vita in an interesting position in between rival handheld platforms. The 3DS has a huge installed base, but the vast majority of its software is sold physically at retail - I don't know what percentage of 3DS owners have ever bought anything from Nintendo's clunky and unlikeable eShop, but I don't imagine it's terribly high. As a consequence, if you want to develop a successful title for the 3DS, you really need to have a publishing contract that's going to get you put into a box and into stores; a gigantic hurdle to leap for any indie team. On the other side, you have iOS, which has an even more massive installed base and does have lots of users downloading software; but free-to-play is dominant on this platform, and getting users to actually pay for game software up-front is a major challenge. Moreover, iOS devices lack physical controls, which limits the kind of games that can successfully be played on them.
"Vita has the potential to be an evolutionary niche that's beloved by gamers and remarkably successful for developers operating at the right scale for the platform"
In the middle you have Vita. Small installed base, yes, but an enthusiastic one; indeed, one only needs to look at the comments thread for any Vita-related article on the internet to see how devoted many Vita owners are to their console. Moreover, it's an installed base that's interested in trying out indie and niche titles, wants to play them on a portable platform, is comfortable with downloading them and most of all, is happy to actually pay money for them. In a sense, buying a Vita and supporting the developers who work on it has become the default action for gamers who bemoan the rapid rise of F2P and mobile gaming, and would rather actually do something about it rather than crying on Twitter all day long. It's an enclave where the old business model still works nicely; not that it's entirely free of F2P (nor should it be, since F2P is a perfectly valid model for many types of game), but it's far from being the default, as it is on iOS.
As this perception of the Vita grows, I expect it will do something quite odd; even as the console's installed base continues to disappoint in terms of headline figures, Vita will actually attract more development support, not less. The AAA tentpole releases will have to come from Sony, for the most part, but the rest of the console's library will be filled in with panache by small developers and other firms seeking to address the niche market forming around the Vita. Nobody will make huge fortunes, but not every business ecosystem has to be enormous; Vita has the potential to be an evolutionary niche that's beloved by gamers and remarkably successful for developers operating at the right scale for the platform.
What about Sony, in all of this? Sony's take on Vita, at this point, reminds me a little of Apple's long-term view on Apple TV - which Steve Jobs famously described as being a "hobby" rather than a core business. Vita is Sony Computer Entertainment's hobby. It may, in the end, be much more than that; its interaction with PS4 may see it becoming a must-have accessory for the home console, which would drive sales significantly. Its future role as a client device for PlayStation Now could prove to be a killer application for the broader market. Vita TV, barely selling at all after a bizarre soft-launch in Japan (a territory with no streaming video market worth a damn, which snuffs out much of the appeal of the device right out of the door), could equally turn into a hugely important product once PS Now is up and running; I suspect that Vita TV will launch alongside PS Now in the USA, marketed primarily as a client for the service, with integration into other Sony devices (primarily TVs) also coming down the line. A lot could change, commercially, and Sony will not stop enthusiastically supporting Vita while any of those irons remains in the fire.
Comparisons with the Dreamcast are inevitable when a console fails to impress commercially. In this instance, the comparisons are all the more compelling since Vita has also found itself in the mantle of the plucky underdog; beloved by core gamers and media, yet failing to catch the eye of the wider public. There, however, the comparisons end. For Dreamcast, the moment where the big publishers stopped being willing to put millions behind the development and launch of AAA games was the death knell of the system. For Vita, birthed in an era of digital distribution, indie development and niche publishing, that moment may just be the beginning.

Natsume will localize End of Serenity, KEMCO's classicly-styled JRPG, sometime this summer on the PlayStation Network. Hold off on adding another RPG to your Vita's schedule though - End of Serenity is planned to go back a generation and land on the PSP.
End of Serenity's world is littered with objects called Atomigems, which are used for everything from family heirlooms to items of elevated status worthy of worship. A group known as the Underworld has begun hoarding Atomigems for itself however, regardless of the importance placed in each item by previous owners.
Although the PSP version is End of Serenity's first North American appearance on handhelds, IGN noticed that the RPG began on mobile platforms as End of Aspiration. If you're okay with trading physical buttons for the chance to explore KEMCO's RPG right now, that version is currently available in the North American Google Play store for $4.99.
There's a chance you've played Natsume's last mobile-to-PSP JRPG port, too - the publisher also brought KEMCO's Mystic Chronicles to the PSP last year.

Little Timmy Robinson is still waiting for BioWare to respond to his letter asking for a current-gen release of Mass Effect Trilogy, but we know the studio is busy making universes and stuff. Maybe Timmy won't need to wait on BioWare to pipe up, though - Chilean retailer Zmart Games has listed Commander Shepard's trilogy for the PS4 and Xbox One. Release dates and prices are absent from both pages, though customers can sign up to be notified for when the supposed Trilogy port becomes available.
Retailers occasionally let the Rachni Queen out of the bag regarding new projects, as was the case with this year's worst-kept secret, The Last Of Us: Remastered. Maybe we should get Little Timmy to write another letter asking for a release window and for the inclusion of DLC absent from Trilogy's original release. They can't say no to a kid, right?

Earlier this month, Minecraft developer Mojang announced May 16 (North America) and May 14 (Europe) release dates for the game's boxed PS3 edition. In the comments of the PlayStation Blog announcement, Mojang's Owen Hill noted that the developer is "aiming for Q2/Q3" of this year for the PS4 and Vita versions.
While Hill mentioned that Mojang will have news on Cross Buy and PS3-to-PS4 upgrade options in the near future, he did note that the developer hopes to include world transferring features. "The plan is to enable users to transfer from PS3 to PS4," he wrote. "We're still working out how it'll work with the Vita version."
Mojang also recently showed off the PC version's upcoming world customization options, which will arrive in an update down the road. The sand-blocks adventure game finds success in every game box it lands in, as the developer recently said it surpassed 21 million downloads for Minecraft: Pocket Edition.

PS3 survival horror The Last of Us is getting the last of its season pass content in two weeks' time, just ahead of the upcoming PS4 re-release. The studio said it's releasing the Grounded Bundle DLC in the week starting May 5, which probably translates into May 6 for North America and May 7 for Europe and Australia.
The Grounded Bundle comprises a few moving parts, namely one for single-player and four for multiplayer. For solo enthusiasts, a new Grounded Mode ($5) ups the difficulty to a level Naughty Dog's been billing as Everest-like. "The AI is relentless, smart, and brutal," cackled Community Strategist Eric Monacelli, "and survival will be near impossible."
On the multiplayer side, there are four maps in the Reclaimed Territories pack ($10), five weapons in the Survivalist bundle ($6), and an assortment of skills across the Survival and Professional bundles ($4 each). For some nittier, grittier info, the PlayStation Blog goes into all the multiplayer content in clinical detail.
As ever, if you're a holder of the $20 season pass you don't have to worry about those standalone prices in brackets. If you're not a season pass holder, you may want to get in on the deal before it's discontinued in mid-May, because it also includes the Left Behind and Abandoned Territories content released earlier this year. Or, you could wait for the PS4 "Remastered" edition. It comes with Left Behind, Abandoned Territories and Reclaimed Territories, and it's due to hit sometime this summer.

New PlayStation 4 firmware is set to arrive on April 30, bringing theSHAREfactory video editing suite to the system along with other extras, including "HDCP off." Sony Europe and Japan Asia confirmed the date today; PlayStation firmware is usually released worldwide simultaneously, so it's likely the 1.70 update will hit North America on the same day.
Scorsese types can use SHAREfactory to splice gameplay clips together and add some personal pizazz through things like overlays, filters, and picture-in-picture commentary (if they've got the PS Camera.) The option to toggle HDCP off means they can also capture and save high-definition gameplay video to a USB drive.
The 1.70 firmware also introduces auto-downloading, allowing eager beavers to pre-load games they've pre-ordered, so they unlock ASAP on release day.

If you've been enjoying the second screen-style remote control experience onHulu Plus for the Chromecast, the streaming video site just announced similar support is coming to other devices. First up are the Hulu Plus apps for PS3, PS4 and Xbox One, and other devices are expected to add support soon. Similar to the second screen control Netflix and YouTube have offered -- Hulu is not using theDIAL protocol those two built yet, but an in-house solution, we're told it will add DIAL support in the future -- you'll need apps on both devices, logged into the same account. Then just punch the cast button, and you can throw video from mobile to TV screen, control playback or browse for something new to watch without interrupting the action onscreen. Also like Netflix it has lock screen controls, so you don't have to unlock your phone or tablet just to press pause. It should be active in the apps already, so all you need to do now is find something to watch.

Sony has seemingly disabled recently discovered Vita support for PSP and PSone classics.
Although support for the older games was never officially announced, Vita owners recently found that a wide range of classic titles previously unavailable on the handheld could be downloaded through the Sony Entertainment Network Store and played.
DualShockers reports that Sony has now removed the ability to download the titles in question on Vita, though users who previously managed to do so claim some of the games still work.
It has been speculated that Sony intends to officially introduce support for PSP and PSone classics on Vita at a later date, but that it inadvertently did so earlier than planned before pulling the functionality.
CVG contacted Sony for a statement on the matter when it first came to light but was told the company does not comment on rumour and speculation.

Sony has confirmed at least six games that will be added to the US Instant Game Collection of PS Plus subscribers in the month of May.
PS4 owners will be able to grab the bizarre point-and-click indie adventure, Stick it to the Man, next month, while Vita owners can look forward to at least two new IGC games; dark platformer Limbo and puzzle game Surge Deluxe.
PS3 owners will scoop up the remaining three games, which include unique platformer Puppeteer, 2D fighting game Skullgirls Encore and Konami's latest footy sim Pro Evolution Soccer 2014.
"More" games are promised during the month, with the above titles assumedly forming only a partial list of May's IGC newcomers.
The US list differs slightly from the EU PS Plus May update, which includes Stick it to the Man, Payday 2, Puppeteer, Muramasa Rebirth and Everybody's Golf.

Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition worlds will be transferrable to the game's upcoming PlayStation 4 version, developer Mojang has stated.
That's "the plan", anyway, Mojang's Owen Hill wrote in the comments of his recent post on the EU PlayStation blog."The plan is to enable users to transfer from PS3 to PS4," he explained. "We're still working out how it'll work with the Vita version."Both the PS4 and Vita versions are now expected in "Q2/Q3" - any time from now until September.Details on possible discounts (or a full Cross-Buy approach) to the game will be announced closer to its release, Hill continued."We'll have more news on cross-buy/upgrade options soon! I understand that the wait is frustrating, but we don't want to make false promises."Box art for the game's PlayStation 4 and Vita versions was spotted last week - suggesting a release was actually not too far off. The box design is the same as for the physical PS3 version, which will launch in bricks and mortar shops on 14th May.As for the game's Xbox One version - we've heard little on that for some time.Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer at first stated that Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition saves couldn't be transferred to Xbox One as it was the game's next-gen version was "a new product" - although he later revised this to state that the company was still "discussing" the option with console developer 4J Studios.

Grand Theft Auto 5 may soon host jetpacks for the first time, according to a new string of code recently added to the game.
Eagle-eyed modder Chr0m3 x MoDzdiscovered reference to the gadget had been added in GTA5's recent 1.12 update. The code also suggests you'll be able to wield a gun while in the air, similar to when you're using a parachute.Jetpacks were available back in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and this recent discovery is not the first hint we've had that the aerial transport may be on the way.A drawing that fans have suggested depicted a jetpack - as well as aliens - was spotted within GTA5's world soon after the game was released. No one has yet been able to fully decipher its meaning, but it appears to point to pictures of UFOs dotted around the game's huge Mt. Chiliad region. The truth, it seems, may finally soon be out there.

Indie outfit Flying Carpets Games will be bringing its successfully Kickstarted fantasy adventure The Girl and the Robot to PS4, in addition to the already announced platforms: Wii U, PC, Mac and Linux."It seems like our game caught the attention of Sony and we managed to get a deal with them," said project lead Salim Larochelle in a Kickstarter update. The Girl and the Robot follows in the footsteps of Ico as a young girl (in a white dress with a tan pattern, no less) befriends a robot and the two must work together to escape a castle lorded over by some mysterious sorceress.Aside from its Studio Ghibli-inspired artwork, the primary difference between this and Ico is that The Girl and the Robot lets you switch between the two characters with the touch of a button. The Girl can crawl through smaller openings and climb, while the Robot is equipped for combat and moving heavy objects.

Today marks the debut of Bandai Namco's Soulcalibur: Lost Swords, an attempt at transferring the free-to-play success of Tekken Revolution to the publisher's other big 3D fighting franchise.
Like Tekken Revolution, Soulcalibur: Lost Swords is exclusive to the PlayStation 3 and can be downloaded from the PlayStation Network at no charge. Though superficially a one-on-one fighter mechanically similar to Soulcalibur 5, Lost Swords is a single-player game where players fight their way through typicalSoulcalibur battles, earning items which can then be used to customize their chosen character. As in Tekken Revolution, each battle requires that players expend a certain amount of in-game currency, though once this supply runs low, players can either wait for it to gradually refill or shell out real-world cash to speed the process.
To reward those who just can't wait to slice and dice their polygonal foes, Bandai Namco is offering a gratis set of "bonus items" to anyone who plays the game within its first month of release. There's no word on what exactly these bonus items are, but knowing the series it could be anything from new weapons to inexplicable Star Wars tie-ins.

Happy PSN Tuesday! This week on PS4 we get Octodad: Dadliest Catch ($15),Putty Squad ($25) and Cel Damage HD ($10). Even though Octodad is a new indie game on a Sony console, it's not free for Plus members – and the developers at Young Horses put a lot of thought into that development.
Cel Damage HD is also available on PS3 and Vita, while Putty Squad is also on Vita. The PS3 lineup includes Defense Technica and SoulCalibur Lost Swords(that one's free). On Vita, there's The Walking Dead Season 2: Episode 1, Demon Gaze and Starlight Inception.
PS Plus members this week get PixelJunk Monsters Ultimate HD free on Vita.Whee!

Stick it to the Man is the next PlayStation 4 offering for Plus subscribers in Europe, starting next week on April 30. The eccentric 2D adventure is due in North America on May 6, which perhaps suggests a later start for May's stateside batch of Plus, or possibly a different PS4 game. We will have to wait and see.
Returning to Europe, there are four other games entering the PS Plus service at the end of April, including two on PS3 and two on Vita. The first of the console offerings is performer plaformer Puppeteer, while the second is first-person robber Payday 2. The latter is a neat addition for subscribers who downloaded the first Payday last summer.
The Vita newbies are two very different games hailing from Japan, namely hand-painted 2D adventure Muramasa Rebirth and cutesy sports sim Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational. That's Everybody's Golf if you're European, but Loads of Fun no matter where you're from.
As ever, five games in means five games out: Make sure you grab Mercenary Kings, Pro Evo 2014, BioShock Infinite, Hotline Miami and MotoGP13 before Plus drops them on April 30.

Eric Chahi's classic side-scrolling adventure game Another World may soon see a re-release across multiple consoles and portable platforms, a recent USKratings submission suggests.
Another World (released on 16-bit consoles as Out of This World) transports players to a harsh alien planet where they must fend off hostile humanoids and solve environmental puzzles to survive. The game saw an anniversary release on PC platforms in 2010, followed by ports for iOS and Android courtesy of retrogame remastering studio DotEmu.
Another World's ratings submission points to future ports for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and PS Vita, with Digital Lounge listed as publisher. We've contacted DotEmu for more information regarding the listed release.
