Well, this is interesting. VG247 has published what it says are pics from an early Sony PSP2 development kit. There isn't much to go by in terms of back story, and in many ways it looks more like a KIRF from Mr. Blurrycam's vintage collection than something for software testing, but let's hear what the site has to say: HD screen, two cameras (front and rear), microphone, two thumbsticks, and a rear "trackpad" of sorts, presumably akin to what we've seen on the PS Phone leak. VG247 later updated to say that a source claims it's an earlier version of the kit and that a revision has since been developed without a sliding screen -- a move to perhaps deal with (also rumored) overheating concerns. We know a PSP2 exists in some form, so this can go one of two ways -- either cleaner shots will be found, or an entirely different leak will surface later. Given the suspect Fall 2011 debut, we have plenty of time to wait around and see.

Square Enix director Nobuaki Komoto has confirmed that, content wise at least, the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIV is "100% complete".
"In terms of the port, the PC version is 100% complete and running on the PS3," he told Famitsu during a recent interview.
"We're currently busy optimizing PS3 performance to make it run as smoothly as possible. We're doing everything we can to make it perform closely to the PC version, so it may prove to take more time to release," he said, which sounded like a hint to a possible delay. "We'll also use that time to implement the fixes suggested by PC gamers," he added.
That's one reason to expect the PS3 version to be significantly better than the troubled PC launch title. Oh, and the other is the fact that FFXIV producer blames the issues on his team's "inexperience" with PC. So they should be a dab hand on console then, we expect.
The PS3 version was initially planned for release aside the PC version, but was delayed to March 2011 due to "technical problems".

The first images of what pertain to be the still secretive PSP2 have appeared online. You can see them both below.
VG247 says the images are of the dev kit that until recently had been doing the rounds. However, it has since been superseded by a single brick design that dispenses with the PSPgo-like sliding front panel.
However, the fundamental design elements pictured here are said to remain. That being the previously rumoured rear touch panel, dual analogue sticks and twin cameras - one rear and one front facing.
Prior rumours also point to double the amount of RAM found in the Xbox 360.
To date both Mortal Komabt developer Netherrealm Studios and publisher EA have confessed to having worked on the device.
However, the PSP2 is not be confused with the PlayStation branded Sony Ericsson mobile phone that is also in production.

While Microsoft has claimed a notable victory in the US hardware market last month, Sony has highlighted the strength of PS3s software sales in its response to NPDs latest report.
The platform holder says it enjoyed an “incredibly strong October” and that the PS3 was the only format to enjoy month-on-month software growth, with game sales up 50 per cent on September.
It also added that sales of PlayStation Move were up 15 per cent on the month before – though of course having only hit the market halfway through the month October offered lots of additional comparable sales time.
“With next week’s launch of the industry’s most anticipated title, Gran Turismo 5, we’re sure to carry the momentum through the holidays,” SCEA’s senior director of corporate communications Patrick Seybold stated, as reported by VG247.
“With the growing content and services options for PS3 and PlayStation Network including recently added Hulu Plus and NHL GameCenter, as well as the pending launch of Vudu on PS3, we’re constantly adding additional value to the hardware and consumers are responding.”

The upgrade to the PlayStation 3's PlayTV feature costs £6.29 / €7.99, Sony's announced.
It's available to download today as part of this week's European PlayStation Store update.
PlayTV is an external device for PlayStation 3 that allows you to watch and record free-to-air digital TV on PS3. PlayTV carries an RRP of £70, although most retailers offer significant discounts.
The update adds the ability to text-chat with friends while watching live TV. There's also a new guide so you can plan your recordings seven days in advance; a Series Link feature to earmark all episodes of a series for recording; the ability to send Facebook recommendations; and Community Favourites, which lets you see what your friends are watching.
In September Sony revealed the major update would cost PS3 owners – even those who subscribe to PlayStation Plus.
"The guys at Cambridge put a great deal of effort into this update and, unlike the previous free updates, we will be charging a reasonable amount for the new features," James Thorpe, PSN product manager, wrote on the European PlayStation blog.
"[PlayStation] Plus members are very important to us and we are looking into providing you guys extra value for PlayTV. Will keep you posted on this.
"If you are not keen on the new features then you do not have to buy the update, therefore there is no reason not to recommend this to your friend, we are not charging people to watch TV."

Today on the EU PlayStation Store you'll find the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in HD.
It's the best of the soon to be re-released trilogy, but it'll cost a considerable £12 to own.
Since those days the series has evolved, of course - into Assassin's Creed. Check out our 10/10 Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood review to find out how.
Incidentally, Eurogamer's review of the Prince of Persia HD trilogy will go live tomorrow morning. Hang on until then, unless you're desperate.
Sony is also offering Red Faction: Guerrilla as a full downloadable game. We got the wrong end of the stick earlier and thought this was a new strategy, but Sony soon put us right and said full games have been offered on the PSN Store for a while.
Blush.
Today's other new game of note is Crazy Taxi, the HD remake. Great game on Dreamcast - as good on PS3? You tell us.
There's a ton of additional PS3 game content on offer today, including stuff for Vanquish, SSFIV, Creed: Brotherhood - not that you'll be playing this yet - and the paid-for update to PlayTV.
What's more, PopCap puzzle game Peggle has arrived on PSP.
Oh, and there are songs by Slash for Rock Band 3, and he's brilliant.

Kingdom Hearts 3D – the planned 3DS Square Enix/Disney cross-over role-playing game from Tetsuya Nomura – will connect to the yet-to-be revealed Kingdom Hearts III.
It'll do so both in terms of gameplay systems and story, Nomura told Famitsu magazine (translated by Andriasang).
Apparently it's possible the ending of Kingdom Hearts 3D will lead into the story of KHIII.
In 3D you'll be able to control Sora and Riku, and they'll both work differently. The game's central gameplay systems are "all complete", but Square Enix is still working out how to put them into the game.
The world selection for the game's Disney areas is also being worked on. SE plans to use all new Disney worlds this time around, but Traverse Town and other originals will reappear.
Meanwhile, work on Kingdom Hearts project, Birth By Sleep Final Mix is said to be "almost complete". It's all getting a bit complicated, isn't it? Let's recap.
Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded is due out on the DS in Europe on 14th January 2011. We've got Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep Final Mix, the international version of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, for PSP - that looks like a Japanese exclusive.
Then we've got Kingdom Hearts 3D, the working title for series' Nintendo 3DS entry. It'll be the seventh instalment in the franchise.
Beyond that there's Kingdom Hearts III, which is probably the big one but a long way off. Phew!

Well, that didn't take very long. A high-definition update of Ubisoft Montreal's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is set to arrive on the PlayStation Network starting today. Launching in Europe later this week as a single Blu-ray disc, the remastered Prince of Persia Trilogy will be brought to the American PlayStation store in three separate flavors: original, smoldering and nutty.
According to the PlayStation Blog, Warrior Within (that game they made because you didn't buy Sands of Time in the first place) and The Two Thrones will launch on PSN in December. All three adventures boast 720p resolution, Trophies, 3D support and $14.99 price tags. That's $45 for the original trilogy -- and you can probably find The Forgotten Sands in a bargain bin if you're looking for even more of the classic Prince's elegant environmental puzzles.

Do you need to be convinced of Split/Second's capacity for stock car annihilation on PSP? Sony's offered you two ways to do so, the most thorough of which is a brief demo that's currently available on the PlayStation Store. What better way could there be to preview the miniaturized, bombastic racer than to actually get your hands dirty?
Well, we're not sure about a better way -- but there's certainly an easier way. See, downloading and playing that demo? That would require hundreds of button presses. Watching the launch trailer posted after the jump? That's like, two button presses. Maybe three, if you have to scroll down. Talk about efficient! Also, lazy.

MonkeyPaw Games is living up to its responsibility as the single publisher (so far) for the PSN Imports Store, dropping two interesting Japanese PlayStation games on the service today. In case you're not familiar with one or both -- a totally understandable happenstance -- here's what they are.
Money Idol Exchanger is a pretty weird (but not Cho Aniki weird) Neo Geo puzzle game ported to PlayStation, in which you link up on-screen coins to combine them into higher denominations: five 1s become a 5, etc., until you match two 500s and they vanish. Also, there are idol characters in it for some reason. And Sonic Wings Special is a single game combining all three Sonic Wings shmups (known as Aero Fighters in America).
The games are both available now for $5.99 each -- less for PlayStation Plus members

"The type of growth we're experiencing in Latin America, you don't see it anywhere else in the world right now," Sony's Mark Stanley told IndustryGamers. "That's key for the company as SCEI, as a global company. We've only begun to tap into the full potential in the region. Our sales and our growth continues to double and double."
The games industry has historically focused on the business of North America, Europe and Asia. However, with the global economic downturn affecting game sales all around the world, Latin America offers an enticing opportunity for Sony. "Talking about the pure economics, Latin America is very healthy and in a very healthy state right now ... This year Latin America was in a growth stage, where in the U.S. we're still recovering from that economic impact." As such, Stanley points out that "purchasing intent" has increased significantly in many emerging markets.
The average annual income in Latin America is still under $4,000, according to Stanley's own estimates, meaning the economy still has a ways to go before a product like the PS3 is accessible to the masses, and not just the affluent. Still, it appears Sony's focused marketing efforts are paying off. "The big advantage we have is our brand is synonymous with entertainment ... We've been able to successfully leverage that with the quality of PlayStation and been able to get even some of that percentage of the population that would not have traditionally spent on an entertainment device; we've been able to get those consumers on board, because they see the overall family entertainment value." As the PlayStation brand continues to draw awareness, and as the Latin American economy continues to grow, Sony might be able to reap the rewards of dominating a whole new gaming territory.

Today a remake of the Dreamcast classic Crazy Taxi launched on the PlayStation Network, with the Xbox Live Arcade release coming November 24th. The graphics have been updated to 720p, but licensing issues for the soundtrack and some in-game locations resulted in noticeable changes. Quoting the Opposable Thumbs blog:
"The Offspring, along with Bad Religion, provided the game's soundtrack in the original release. These songs, along with the sound of that announcer, went a long way toward creating the game's mood. In the new version, they have been replaced by completely forgettable pop-punk tracks, and it's a downgrade. ... That's not the only thing that's missing. The game originally featured licensed locations. Customers would need to be dropped off at the Pizza Hut, for instance. These companies didn't spring for the advertising in the game's rerelease, but the buildings weren't updated to look like anything else; the result is a game that looks like its filled with closed-down fast food restaurants. ... this is an interesting look at what went on to become a cult classic. Still, this is no replacement for my original copy."

First Netflix, then Hulu Plus, and now VUDU. The movie rental service is making its way onto PlayStation 3 just in time for Thanksgiving later this month -- November 23rd, to be exact. If you're familiar with Walmart's recently-acquired video service, you know the drill: on-demand HD titles streamed for a fee, up to 1080p and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound. The interface will be the same as every other VUDU iteration -- until mid-December, that is. That's when, as we've been told, the company plans to roll out version 2.0 of its UI. In addition to being more streamlined, there's ratings, recommendations, and most interestingly, support for PS3's Move controller. Pictures below, press releases after the break.

A survey of visitors to the recent Tokyo Game Show has suggested that Sony's venerable PlayStation 2 remains Japan's most-used console.
70 per cent of the 1000 attendees questioned in an exit poll by the General Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) claimed to play on their PS2s. This was down from a high of 79 per cent in 2008.
The handhelds weren't far behind - DS at 68.7 per cent, with PSP hot on its heels at 68.6 per cent. The survey allowed multiple choices of frequently-used hardware.
Wii, PS3 and 360 managed 56.7, 47.7 and 19.6 per cent respectively.
Also surveyed was planned future console purchases, with 3DS and PS3 coming joint top at 31 per cent, followed by 360 at 23 per cent.
