After so many years in development we'd hope that Gran Turismo 5 offers some moderately realistic racing action. However, Sony reckons its racer is so lifelike that it's offering gamers the chance to swap the controller for a real steering wheel and go pro.
According to the PlayStation Blog, the game's developer Polyphony Digital has teamed up with Nissan North America to launch the GT Academy competition.
From 20th December, a series of regional heats will narrow entrants down to the best 32 virtual racers. This elite group will then be whittled down to 16, who will all be invited to take part in a live national finals event in March 2011.
The final will see contestants testing their skills in a number of events, some of which will be in a real Nissan race car.
The eventual GT Academy winner will then go on to train with elite drivers and race as part of a professional team – the precise details of which Sony is yet to reveal.
There are smaller prizes on offer for regional winners and all contestants will grab some free digital content.
Alas, the event is only open to US gamers for now, but Sony will be filming the whole thing for a multi-part TV series to be shown on the SPEED channel and PlayStation Network next year.
If you are in the USA and fancy giving it a shot, registration details are up on the game's official website.
It's not long until you can start practicing. After a seemingly endless series of delays, Sony is finally releasing Gran Turismo 5 on 24th November.

ThatOtherPerson has just released the very first SixAxis compatible homebrew game for the PlayStation 3, Neo Race v0.1! Although at the moment, racing has yet to be implemented. To control your vehicle you simply tilt the PS3 controller to the left or right. To accelerate you press the [X] button. For now, all you can do is go around the track. ThatOtherPerson promises that racing will be added sometime in the near future. This definitely has a TRON feel to it.
This is an early build of a racing game with sixaxis controls. Just tilt your PS3 controller left and right to turn and hold X to accelerate.
It has a similar art style (because its incredibly quick and easy to make art assets that looks like this by comparison to making something pseudo photo realistic) as Neo Tanks but they are otherwise completely unrelated.
At the moment all you can do is go around the track and possibly drive off it and onto the buildings bellow. But there will eventually be actual racing, split screen multiplayer and (here comes what I consider the mildly cool part which will still be totally unimpressive by comparison to ModNation Racer but is kinda nice next to Track Mania) an in game track editor which will NOT be limited to a grid.
I know I start too many side projects but I’m not abandoning anything. I’ve been doing a good job of going back and improving on Cubicle Shooter and I do intend to do the same with this and everything else. In fact the next thing I’m planning to work on is fixing up Dont Get Crushed.

Oh and does anyone know what the deal is with fog in PSGL? It works fine on PC but on PS3 it just turns the entire screen completely black and ruins the frame rate.

Zipper Interactive has insisted large scale first-person shooter MAG is one of the most played online PlayStation 3 games amid accusations that hardly anyone's playing it.
A user on the game's official forum (thanks, VG247), dvdpfstr, said: "Look at the numbers of players on MAG for the last week. It would seem to me the writing is on the wall. Socom Confrontation has more players still and that is a game that people have complained about incessantly since its release. It really is sad too, MAG had so much potential only to get worse the longer it was out."
The comment sparked a response from senior community manager Jeremy Dunham, who hit back at dvdpfstr's accusation.
"This is incorrect," he said. "MAG has more concurrent players than SOCOM Confrontation worldwide on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. This has been true for every month since MAG's release on January 26.
"Obviously we don't hit the same numbers we had in our first few months in terms of concurrent and daily users, but we're still amongst the most played online PS3 games out there."
Eurogamer reviewed MAG in January, awarding the ambitious shooter 7/10.
Zipper's supported the game since then with a raft of downloadable content. Last month a massive patch, called MAG 2.0, was released.

It looks like the currently Euro-exclusive PS3 Blu-ray compilation of the PS2 Prince of Persia games will be heading to the US as separate PSN downloads.
In an update release schedule put out today in conjunction with its first half of 2010-11 financials, Ubisoft list the three games, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, as separate entries with 'PSN' as the platform.
The Euro-exclusive Prince of Persia Trilogy disc, which includes all three games on a single disc, is also on the list, making it even clearer Ubisoft's plan to release the games digitally in the States.
No prices have been confirmed however, and the release is pinned somewhere between now and the end of the year.
Meanwhile, Ubi boss Yves Guillemot made mention of a Splinter Cell Trilogy also making its way to PSN as downloads, which would come as no surprise to those who remember that Splinter Cell and Prince trilogies were rumoured together when Amazon listed them both for November releases.
The Blu-ray PoP trilogy is scheduled for release in Europe on November 19, at a recommended retail price of £29.99.

Ubisoft's lead game designer on Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Steve Masters, has said that the changes made to Brotherhood will have significant influence on the series' direction.
In an interview with PSM3 - which you can read here - Masters was asked if he felt that people were becoming more receptive towards Brotherhood, especially given the quick turnaround time on the game and its similarity to AC2.
Masters replied confidently, highlighting the game's strong storytelling, multiplayer and saying that Brotherhood is an essential part of the franchise that will have significant impact on future titles.
"Yeah, I think people started off with an idea of, you know, "they're pushing this out fast!" But really, once they see it, once they play it and experience it, they understand that it's actually a really huge game," said Masters.
"The additions that we're making to the gameplay and to the storyline change things forever. It's going to be a huge experience that people are going to really enjoy." he added.
PSM3 has awarded Assassin's Creed Brother 92% in its review, calling it an "inventive and entertaining addition".

Sony has confirmed that the £30 PSPgo price cut spotted earlier today on the Sony Store was the result of a 'website error'.
The digital-download only handheld went down to £129 on the UK Sony Store, shortly after an official £65 cut to its recommended retail price last month.
However, Sony has confirmed this second price-drop is the result of an error and that will be amended later today - and you can't get it any cheaper.
Sony did not confirm whether purchases made during this period will be honored.
Rumors have suggested Sony is making way for the PSP2. Senior VP of EA, Patrick Soderlund, has told CVG that EA has had the new portable.

Is it Sony's play against the Wiimote, or the Kinect... or both? Hard to say exactly, but there's no question that the PS3 is no longer on the outside looking in when it comes to motion gaming. Now that it's been on the market for a few months, we're looking to hear from early adopters -- have you enjoyed your time with the Move? Has it lived up to your expectations? Any quirks with gameplay that you'd iron out? Any particular games that you'd prefer to see play nice with the apparatus? Set yourself in the mindset of a SCEA designer for a tick and let us know how you'd do the Move differently down in comments below. And yeah, sticking with "Arc" is totally an acceptable suggestion to make.

As usual, new SDK => New mandelbrot ...
SDK (100% legal) (PSL1GHT) for PS3 is starting to show the tip of his nose. Being quite interested in it and have already dabbled in PS3 Linux, I'm tempted not to develop a small homebrew "test" just to see.
To change mandelbrot I coded a very basic ...
The idea is mainly to look at what is currently feasible with the SDK and its limitations before attempting to do more.
Obviously I will give my feedback on dev (Why not with one / several tutorials oriented machine sony).
While waiting for the curious here is my pkg homebrew (I will add TFWP the screens and explanations on the code itself in a future issue dedicated).
EDIT: Where no screenshot, I added a picture taken from my phone, it's ugly but it does not matter!
EDIT2: this is where the video
It's slow: it uses only the EPP (and removing sleep (1) code that will really soon (I'll have to put the video up to date))
It's ugly: yeah, what you expected?

Another update for Cubicle Shooter.
Notable changes:
Improved frame rate.
The enemy count has been raised from 25 to 100.
Added movable chairs.
Added a loading screen.
Added running. Just hold down the left analog stick well moving forward to enable it. The camera does a nice wobble from side to side when your running.
Added camera zoom. Hold down L1 to enable the scope. Turning speed is a bit slower when zoomed in which makes it easier to aim at things in the distance.
Added a little bit of momentum / smoothing on the camera rotation. Its faster and more responsive then it is in Killzone 2 but it enough to make it feel smoother and it makes it a bit easier to make slight aiming adjustments.
Increased rate of fire again.
Corrected the width of the 2D elements (the on screen text and the reticule) to take into account the screens aspect ratio. The scope for the newly added camera zoom disregards this and stretches to fit the screen.
Once again game saving/loading has been updated to work with the new additions so your old game save wont work correctly.
By holding down triangle you can split the screen in two with the bottom half displaying whats behind you. Its a feature that I don’t really intend to leave it but its a test and a small first step towards split screen multiplayer.
Controls:
Move – Left analog stick
Run – L3
Aim – Right analog stick
Shoot – R1
Zoom – L1
Jump – X
Save – Select
Load – Start
split screen backwards view – Triangle

Persona 2 is getting a flashy makeover in Atlus' upcoming PSP remake. As evidenced by this still, the updated RPG is oozing with style. But, pretty cinematics aren't the only new addition for the upcoming release. Siliconera has a terrific gallery, comparing the PSone original with the upcoming PSP port. The added detail on the sprites is immediately noticeable, as is the newly implemented widescreen presentation. Special effects look a bit crisper, as well
Some of the changes are not just cosmetic. The battle UI has also been updated, letting you see the upcoming turn order and the emotion gauge during demon negotiation. Siliconera adds that "Innocent Sin has cut-in screens when you use sync skills, a feature not in the PsOne release."
Unfortunately, Atlus has yet to announce the game for US release. Perhaps Atlus needs more time to figure out what bonus items to package with the UMDs?

Do you remember the plugin m33_620 created by coder Torky that allowed PSP owners-450 (the dreaded Go! Cam Black) also make use of it on CF 5.00m33? No? Well, you refresh your memory.
By using this innovative plug-in, assisted by several dump files from the official firmware 6.20, it was finally possible to run CF on the Go! Cam Black. All this was based on the plugin m33-user. The only flaw is that the games above the 6.20 firmware applicants could not be started. But why do we go about? It 'easy to say, as some of you may be able to easily guess from the title, has just released an update that lets you use the Go! Cam even with games that require 6.30.
Installing the new plugin is based on the existence of the above. For more information, please see the box on the monitor, carefully read through.
Installation:
Quote:
Installation
1. Download the archive m33_630.rar
2. Those who had not installed the previous version, will necessarily follow the instructions of news and CF Go! Cam 450: finally possible before proceeding to the next step.
3. For those who have already installed the previous version of the plugin, simply replacing the file m33_620_user.prx and m33_620.prx new files in the archive.
4. Within / seplugins / edit files vsh.txt game.txt and add the following line: ms0: / seplugins/m33_630.prx 1
5. Recovery From activate the plug-in.
Without it you just have to start any game that takes advantage of the Go! Cam and test its proper functioning.

The latest news from part of Total_Noob have shifted the focus on the development and use dell'HBL structured for the game Everybody's Golf 2 (aka Hot Shots Golf 2 or Minna no Golf 2), putting a bit 'in the shadow that has been in past. Unfortunately, the lack of a large number of testers sull'HBL to 6.30 and 6.31 does not yet allow to understand whether the HBL concerned, is as good as the previous Patapon2, even when it appears crucial to the new site in HEN. This time to discuss the new HEN might suggest to the holders of firmware prior to 6.30, and then dell'HBL of Patapon2, have been forgotten. Fortunately it is not. It 's true that work on the old Half-Byte Loader is slowed down, but the fact remains that it is still updated. Thus, it has just been released for the Rev 107 dell'HBL Patapon2 demo, which provides better compatibility with games, among whom are Mobile Assault and Transport Tycoon Deluxe.

November 3rd came and went without a Gran Turismo 5 game to play, so as you'd imagine this gorgeous Titanium Blue PS3 launch bundle also failed to see the light of day. However, now that we've got a totally plausible and twice-confirmed November 24th release date for the little uber-realistic racer that could, it's probably fair to take Sony Japan at its word that we'll see the commemorating console appear without further delay. Tell your Japanese importer to line up on November 25th if you want one with your name on it, and be sure to hand him at least ¥35,980 (about $436) of your rainy day fund.

Peggle, PopCap's classic pinball-meets-pachinko timewaster, is coming to PSP next week.
You'll be able to download the game from the PlayStation Store on Tuesday, priced $9.99. A UK price hasn't been confirmed yet.
The game's associate producer told the PlayStation Blog, "Our expert Peggle Institute Programmers were able to get the full, original Peggle Experience into your PSP.
"All the original Masters, challenges, and levels in adventure mode are here! There were some late nights and long meetings with Bjorn and Master Hu, but we got there!"
Honestly, if you don't have a copy of the game yet, you need to check yourself – it's an unfeasibly brilliant confection.
However, it's worth bearing in mind that the equally full-featured iPhone version comes in considerably cheaper at £1.79.

There might be a new Tomb Raider game on the way, if teaser artwork in the new issue of Game Informer has been deciphered correctly.
A two page spread in the latest issue, posted on NeoGaf, shows a shipwrecked vessel, the words "A survivor is born" and a reveal date of 6th December.
So, why might this point to a new Tomb Raider title? Well, you may remember back in July last year leaked information suggested that the next game in Eidos' long-running franchise would see Lara Croft shipwrecked on a mysterious island off the coast of Japan.
A website has also gone live bearing the words "A survivor is born".
The last 'traditional' game in the series, Tomb Raider: Underworld, came out in 2008 with Eurogamer's Ellie Gibson awarding it 7/10.
Then earlier this year we had the excellent top-down spin-off, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.
Eidos and parent company Square Enix haven't commented on the Game Informer image so you'll just have to wait until next month to find out what exactly is afoot.

Ubisoft has lifted the lid on the hitherto mysterious Assassin's Creed: Ascendance clip that appeared earlier this week.
It's a short animated film that will serve to bridge the gap between the events of Assassin's Creed 2 and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
Apparently it will follow Ezio Auditore "as he struggles to remove the treacherous Borgia family from their papal throne. Ezio will learn the brutal truth behind Ceasare Borgia's rise to power to control Italy."
You'll be able to download it from PlayStation Store, Xbox Live and "other digital channels" from 16th November – that's three days prior to the release of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
