Sony looked to answer its critics that said Vita was given short shrift at E3, with a blockbuster Gamescom showing.
The platform holder took to unveiling blockbuster IP including Call of Duty, Killzone and Assassin's Creed, while showing new IP Tearaway.
It follows an E3 where Sony was criticised for not talking enough about its new portable. Sony boss Andrew House told MCV at the time he was 'surprised by that reaction.'
BIG THIRD-PARTY BRANDS AND BUNDLES
Finally, Sony was able to lift the lid on its big Vita brands - including an impressive looking demo of the Call of Duty Vita title.
Sony is backing third parties in a major way on Vita, even combining the console's biggest games with the hardware in six new bundles this Q4. Players can get Vita bundles featuring Call of Duty and LittleBigPlanet.
It is reminiscent of the Sony of old, which used exclusive third party support to help drive sales of PS2 and PS One.
KILLZONE LEADS SONY'S BRANDS
There was no sign of Gran Turismo for Vita, but Sony's other big names were on show for Vita. The upcoming Ratchet and Clank: Q-Force is coming to Vita as is a new Killzone game called Mercenary.
"Killzone for PlayStation Vita will be a first person shooter that is just not possible on any other platform," said Sony Euro boss Jim Ryan.
CROSS-BUY REVEALED
Best of all for consumers, more games that utilise 'Cross-buy' are coming. Those who buy Ratchet & Clank: Q-Force, Sly Cooper or PlayStation All-Stars on Vita or PS3, will be able to own the game on both platforms.
It is a sensible move that may become increasingly the norm as we move towards the cloud model. It also effectively allows Sony to leverage PS3's userbase to increase Vita sales, making it extra attractive to own both devices.
NEW IP
But it wasn't just about the big brands and their bundles. Sony is still building new IP for Vita, and one of the big surprises of the show was Tearaway. The game is developed by one of Sony's most acclaimed studios, Media Molecule, which is the team behind LittleBigPlanet. The title utilises pretty much all of Vita's various control mechanisms, and looked stunning. It is an adventure game that is inspired by 'paper'. Media Molecule likened the game to a 'buddy move'.
PS PLUS TO VITA
Sony's premium PSN online service has been only for PS3 up until now, but at Gamescom PlayStation Plus was extended to PS Vita. Sony is placing a significant emphasis on PlayStation Plus, which you can read more about in this week's MCV. The PS Plus roll-out is once again a new way to encourage PS3 owners to upgrade to PlayStation Vita.

Gamescom: PS3 titles Rain, Puppeteer and Until Dawn prove SCE commitment to original titles
Vita may have been about the big brands at Gamescom this week, but PS3 was almost the exact opposite - with Sony announcing even more new IP during its press conference.
Joining the already announced new IP of Beyond, Last of Us and Wonderbook were there new games from Sony's Japanese studios – Puppeteer, Rain and Until Dawn.
"PlayStation has a history of delivering the unexpected both in our software and in our hardware," said Sony Europe president Jim Ryan. "We will continue to do that."
PS3 is seven years old in the US and Japan this year, and Sony will be hoping that by continuing to develop new concepts and original ideas, it can help extend the console lifecycle and keep sales of PS3 steady ahead of the inevitable PS4.

Amazon is running yet another Vita promotional offer, sending you a free copy of Mortal Kombat as well as a 4GB Memory Card if you buy a PS Vita:
For a limited time, get Mortal Kombat and PS Vita 4GB Memory Card free with the purchase of a qualifying PlayStation Vita system.
This works with both the Wifi and the 3G model, but the offer is, of course, limited in time (although they don’t say how long it’s going to be here, so hurry up!).
Mortal Kombat on the PS Vita is one of the best games I’ve played with. If you’re a fan on the Mortal Kombat series, or of fighting games in general, you shouldn’t miss this one!

via http://wololo.net/2012/08/13/vhbl-ne...compatibility/
I have recently made some reports of Homebrew compatibility (here and here) with Neur0n’s upcoming port of VHBL, our Homebrew loader for the Playstation Vita.
In one of those reports, I mentioned that Geometry Wars Portable was not working. I am happy to say that Neur0n tweaked VHBL in order to get that game to run, as well as a few other homebrews.
Unfortunately, I tested a few of the other games that were marked as “not working”, and so far this change seems to not have impacted them. In particular, Snes9xTYL doesn’t seem to work, although uoSnes9X works fine with this upcoming release.
Our beta tester however reported that Neur0n’s fix also made Ragdoll Cannon work, a game that was previously reported as not working. He mentioned additional working games: NinjaSudoku, Breakout 1.0, Mobile Assault, and SnakeSP.
Stay tuned, if the rumors are true, Vita’s firmware 1.80 is coming really soon, and if that’s the case, so will VHBL.

Square Enix says that Sleeping Dogs won't lie down for long, revealing six months of downloadable content are planned for the game following its launch tomorrow.
First on the docket will be a range of downloads available for the game's awakening at retail tomorrow, including the 80s-inspired Retro Triad Pack, featuring "a killer old school outfit with its own player buffs and funky kung-fu van."
New packs will appear in September, beginning with "a high-speed Racing Pack and an explosive SWAT Pack." Details on those two bundles are sparse, but their names give us some idea what shenanigans are to come.
For more on Sleeping Dogs, check out our recent live stream and stay tuned for the review tomorrow.

Sony has seemingly delayed the PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale release date by one month to November 20 in the US.
The star-studded brawler was previously pegged for release on PS3 and Vita in the US on October 23, but the official PlayStation Blog now displays the new release."The Battle Royale Begins November 20th. SuperBot Entertainment president announces a new release date for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale," reads a post on the front page, which we took a screengrab of, although the link to read the article in full isn't working at the moment.
Both versions were expected to release in Europe on November 21. Sony Computer Entertainment UK told us that the "PlayStation All-Stars [release date] is still TBC at the moment."

Many of you are wondering if the upcoming release of VHBL will be worth your attention. Should you stay on 1.61 or 1.67 if you are running one of the previous exploits? Should you not even bother buy the exploited game if your favorite homebrew is not running? Our beta tester (thanks for your help!) came back to me with a few results that I’m sharing here.
Please note that the version he is testing with is not the final one, although from what I could see, the compatibility results are quite definitive. HBL has been very stable for a few months now, and improving compatibility would be difficult without some major breakthrough regarding syscalls.
Anyways, sorry for the boring technical details, below is the report from our tester. Remember that my own tests of this upcoming version of VHBL can also be found here, with additional homebrews. Our tester is using the US version, but we believe compatibility should be the same across all versions.
Homebrews/Apps that work
•Quake 1 Arena (from time to time framedrops but very enjoyable on the Vita)
Quake 1 Arena
•Lamecraft
•Tetriabetes (strangely it recognizes the music I have put on my Vita?)
•Blobby Volley
•Jelly car
Jelly car
•Pipeline (with save/load)
•Spider Solitaire
Spider solitaire
•MVS (a little bit slower than the CFW version but still pleasant to play)
•uo_SNES9x 0.02y32(kinda of slow from time to time)
•Picodrive (As always picodrive runs with sound and savestates)
•CPS1 (Perfect but the menu combo is a Start+Select+R which is hard to hit on the Vita )
•gpsp (works with savestates)
•NesterJ (works with savestates)
•Final Burn Alpha v12p1ALL (works with savestates)
Final burn alpha
•PSPFiler (Not quiting properly for some reason )
•yMenu ( this menu is really nice )
Homebrews/Apps that don’t work
•Thing Thing (Most probably would work but for some reason it does not find its files )
•pspkvm (Not sure what is the right version for VHBL but I tried several with no luck)
•SNES9xTYL 0.4.2 (As I already mentioned in my previous tests)
•Ragdoll Cannon
•PSPLBreakout
•Lua games in general
Not bad, hu? Snes9xTYL not working is a let down, but uo_snes9x is a very good alternative that will satisfy your emulation needs, from what I could see. Thanks again to our beta tester. Remember, for more results you can also check my previous tests.

While PlayStation Vita games output gorgeous visuals on its screen, use of its alternate control mechanisms – like touch and tilt – have often felt flat. But our recent experience with LittleBigPlanet Vita has reinvigorated our interest in tapping and tumbling about with our Sony handheld. Somehow it seems fitting that the first-party series known for its creativity is the one to show developers how to use touch correctly.
The touch and tilt features in LittleBigPlanet seems additive to the experience, rather than wasted, unnecessary, or tacked on – a typical error of such functions. And since you're reaching in the adorable and tiny world, impacting small objects in aid to your little sack-person, the conceit of touch makes perfect sense within the LBP theme.

In the modern age of video games, multiplayer is king and XCOM: Enemy Unknown is going for the crown. Developer Firaxis Games has revealed details on the multiplayer portion of its upcoming reboot of the classic turn-based strategy game series.
For the first time in the franchise's history, XCOM commanders will be able to go head-to-head in deathmatch. The two-player mode allows players to select a squad of six soldiers or aliens – or a combination of the two – to vie for battlefield superiority.
"With the multiplayer mode in XCOM: Enemy Unknown, gamers can finally find out what it's like to command alien units and unleash extraterrestrial destruction on Planet Earth or defend it with a squad of XCOM soldiers and alien allies," XCOM: Enemy Unknown lead designer Jake Solomon said.
From a narrative perspective, the multiplayer mode has no link to the single-player campaign found in XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Players can "mix and match both alien and soldier units to comprise their squad, outfitting soldiers with dozens of armor types, weapons, items and class-based abilities for thousands of possible loadout combinations," a press release announcing the mode revealed.
Pre-orders of XCOM: Enemy Unknown give players access to the 'Elite Solider Pack,' which includes a set of "top-of-the-line soldier customization features," such as the Soldier Deco packs and complete color customization," along with the (already known) classic XCOM soldier flat-top harido. PC players will also have a shot at a platform-exclusive special edition, featuring "a number of unique XCOM items, including an art book; fold-out poster of the XCOM headquarters; XCOM insignia patch; and a collection of digital bonus assets such as desktop wallpaper, soundtrack and more."
XCOM: Enemy Unknown launches for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 9. And, spoiler alert, the unknown enemies are totally aliens.

LightBox Interactive's PS3-exclusive shooter Starhawk has received, among other things, two new free maps as part of the game's recently applied 1.02 update. As seen in the video above, both maps take place on the planet Cypress, which is where the game's plot-vital "Rift Energy" was originally discovered long, long ago.
The two new maps maps, "Cypress: Collider" and "Cypress: Origin," both feature more locations for troops to use as cover, as well as pre-built structures with interiors -- two features fans have asking for, according to a post by LightBox Interactive president Dylan Jobe on the PlayStation Blog.
The 1.02 update also includes a multitude of other tweaks, fixes and adjustments, such as the addition of "Prestige" levels (Alpha through Omega, specifically) for players able to rank beyond Level 50. Other changes/additions include a new Homeworld called "Waypoint," as well a revamped voice chat system and the ability to eject from in-flight jet packs. Complete patch notes can be found at the source link below.

Drinkbox Studios will be attending this year's PAX Prime festivities in Seattle at the end of this month, and while it's there the developer will be showing off one of the benefits ofGuacamelee's PlayStation 3/Vita exclusivity.
"We're integrating the Vita as a PS3 controller for Guacamelee, utilizing the Vita screen for a mini-map, and hopefully more," Drinkbox's Chris McQuinn told Joystiq. "Does this sound like a next-gen console you've heard of perhaps? As far as we know, we're the first game doing this."
PAX Prime attendees, however, won't need a transmedia map on a $250 handheld to findGuacamelee on the show floor: Juicebox will be setting up shop inside the Indie Megabooth, which will be discernible from other, mainstream booths due to its abundance of pixel art and stylish, easily accessible development teams.

Activision and Sony will finally reveal more about Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified at Gamescom next week.
At E3, all the two firms offered up was a logo – yet the clock is ticking on a game that is not only out in a matter of months, but hugely important to the health of SCE’s burgeoning portable games platform.
“You can really expect us to deliver a true Call of Duty experience,” Michael Sportouch, Activision’s European VP and GM of the Santa Monica business unit, told MCV.
“We are really excited about the opportunities that the Vita could offer us in terms of connecting with a new audience.”
