Avalanche Studios' Linus Blomberg suggests experience of PS4 development, and sees the machine as a PC-beater
Avalanche Studios CTO Linus Blomberg has described developing for the recently announced PlayStation 4 as 'a walk in the park'.
Speaking with Develop, the co-founder of the Just Cause studio has showered Sony's forthcoming console with praise, although he admitted it will take time for some devs to familiarise themselves with the platform.
"Compared to the PS3 it's a walk in the park," stated Blomberg. "I think that's one of the major lessons Sony learned with the last generation, you have to be accessible for the developers to be successful. Of course, there's still some quirkiness involved, especially if you're used to a Windows development environment."
He also told Develop that he believes the PS4 could outperform PCs for many years,
"The hardware as such is great, and will outperform most PC's for many years to come," he claimed. "But the true greatness lies in the accessibility and ecosystem supporting it in terms of social connectivity and cloud services."

A wave of positivity remains after SCE promised PS4 would be open to small studios
A number of developers have stepped forward to state their optimism about the PlayStation 4's support for indies.
Speaking to Develop individuals from companies as diverse as Gearbox and nDreams have expressed hope and positivity that, in contrast to previous sony consoles, the PS4 will be accessible and affordable for indies. Their views appear to reflect comments made to Develop by Sony Worldwide Studios SVP Michael Denny, who insisted indies are set to be core to the PS4.
"The PS4 looks like a much more practical option for indie devs than past Sony consoles," offered Mode 7 joint MD Paul Taylor (pictured). "I really appreciate what they've done in terms of its architecture. Also, there are loads of ways for players to share content, which helps out teams with smaller marketing budgets."
"[What] excites me about Sony's approach is their eagerness to embrace cross platform gaming, cloud gaming, 'games as a service', indie digital-only publishers and free-to-play gaming," added nDreams CEO Patrick O'Luanaigh. "Their willingness to push into these areas will mean lots of innovative new IPs and new types of game arriving on the PlayStation Network, whether that's Vita, PS4 or some other PlayStation device."
Elsewhere Gearbox Software FX artist Nick Peterson speculated that a platform similar to Microsoft's XNA may be delivered by Sony.

Nielsen finds streaming service popularity increasing, PS3s now used mostly for non-gaming applications
Gaming consoles have been about more than just games for multiple generations at this point, but their secondary purposes are quickly becoming primary. According to a Nielsen survey of more than 2,500 US consumers, console owners spent 22 percent of their time on the systems streaming video-on-demand services last year. That's up from 19 percent in 2011 and 13 percent in 2010.
While the overall numbers show streaming gaining in popularity, the system-by-system breakdown suggests the big change has been on the PlayStation 3. Video-on-demand time surged from 15 percent to 24 percent on Sony's console. Combine that with the time spent watching DVDs and Blu-rays (18 percent), watching downloaded media (4 percent), and other uses like listening to music or surfing the web (8 percent), and PS3 owners actually spent the majority of their time on the system last year doing things besides playing games.
Streaming remained most popular on the Wii, with VOD accounting for 32 percent of time spent on the machine. And despite Microsoft's flood of media apps on Xbox Live, Xbox 360 owners limited their use of streaming options to 13 percent of their time on the system. Both numbers were down slightly from the year prior.

Gamers could get their first glimpse of Metal Gear Solid V later this week.
That is, of course, if you’re one of the many gamers who firmly believe that mysterious outing The Phantom Pain, developed by the unknown Moby Dick Studio Head, is indeed the next Metal Gear game.
And you’d hardly be foolish to think so.
“This should be interesting: Heading off to interview Moby Dick Studio Head CEO Joakim Mogren,” games TV presenter Geoff Keighley said on Twitter. “The Mogren interview will be on GTTV this Thurs night. He said he has something new to show me.”
PS4 launch title? We certainly hope so.

US retailer's 'first to know' list for Sony's new console reaches 600,000
Demand is "strong" for the PlayStation 4 says the president of major US retailer GameStop.
Over 600,000 have signed up for the mailing list to be the "first to know" of any new information or preorder listings for Sony's next generation console.
"With only a glance at the PS4, gamers are excited and eager to know more," said GameStop president Tony Bartel.
"Within just a few weeks, more than 600,000 people have signed up, showing strong demand for this new console."
The PS4 was officially announced last month at a media event in New York City, so Sony is understandably pleased that so many have willingly signed up for something as unappealing as a mailing list.

Rendering and level creation tech steps up for next generation game creators
Finnish tools maker Umbra Software has released its Umbra 3 middleware for the PlayStation 4.
Umbra 3 enhances real-time graphics performance and productivity with automatic occluder generation and software-based occlusion culling.
Umbra aims to improve the development workflow with its middleware by enabling both rapid content iteration and the creation of more sophisticated levels and more detailed graphical content. The software automatically generates occluders from “polygon soup”, giving artists more time to work on making their gameworlds look as attractive as they can.
Several games in production are currently using Umbra 3 in PlayStation 4 titles, including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt by CD Projekt Red and Destiny by Bungie.
“The PlayStation 4 is a massive leap in processing power and technology. There are several developers taking advantage of Umbra 3 on the PlayStation 4 platform so it’s exciting for us to see how they leverage our software to generate next generation experiences” said Umbra Software CTO Otso Mäkinen.

The Scott Pilgrim DLC really exists. We know it came out yesterday but seeing it on the PSN Store update list makes it even more real to us. Wow. Also up on PS3 today is Darkstalkers Resurrection, the brain game Psych Yourself (about your psychological profile!) Heavy Fire: Shattered Spear, and the PS2 classicKessen 2. Grab Joe Danger 2 for free if you have Plus. Also, Quantum Theory is downloadable, if that's what you're into.
Cross-platform releases include a series of impenetrable PSOne imports – which we don't mind saying is really cool, in an insane way – and way, way too many Ubi discounts.

As is seemingly the way with modern console gaming, Ubisoft has unveiled four Special edition versions of upcoming sneak-em-up Splinter Cell: Blacklist.
First up is The 5th Freedom Edition, which is exclusive to GAME in the UK and GameStop in Ireland. It includes a 24cm Sam Fisher statue, a graphic novel and a host of DLC including five extra bits of gear (such as Amber Goggles), five suits and five weapons.
The 5th Freedom Silver Edition is a uPlay exclusive and includes everything found in the full Freedom Edition minus some of the DLC.
The Ultimate Edition, which is not exclusive to any particular retailer, comes with a Special-ops Digital Watch, a smaller graphic novel and just a couple of bits of DLC.
Finally there’s the Upper Echelon Day 1 Edition, which is a GAME exclusive in the UK and an Xtravision exclusive in Ireland and offers five pieces of DLC.
There will also be extra free content to anyone who pre-orders the title, while those who order from Amazon get a bit more on top.

Activision says its new Walking Dead shooter will mimic the feel of the TV show.
The firm promises the title offers more to fans than just a ‘run-and-gun shooter.’
It follows the success of rival tie-in The Walking Dead by Telltale games, based on the comics. The episodic point-and-click adventure has been a huge success shifting 8.5m downloads.
“The Walking Dead is currently airing series three on Fox TV and has been a critical success,” said Activision senior brand manager Scott Wood.
“With The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct we’ve tried to mimic the feel of the TV show – this is not a run-and-gun shooter.
“Pre-orders spiked when the TV ads started back in February and we expect our strong marketing plans to continue to create demand through launch.”

The majority of American Sony Stores have cut the price of the 3G PlayStation Vita by a third.
Joystiq reports that the handheld is currently available for $199.97, down from the $299.99 it was being sold for previously.
There seems to be a bit of confusion regarding how long the sale will go on for, with some stores saying it is a permanent change and others saying the deal would only run until the weekend.
Some store reps even claimed that the 3G model is being discontinued.
The move follows the machine’s discounting in Japan – a move that led to an explosion in sales.
Will Sony be discounting the handheld in the UK? It’s starting to feel increasingly likely.

In a statement sent to Joystiq, developer Sony Santa Monica has confirmed it will change the name of a controversial God of War: Ascension trophy in a patch that should be available alongside the game on Tuesday. Once the patch is applied, the name of the trophy will be "Bros Before Foes."
Originally named "Bros Before Hos" (as seen above), the trophy pops up soon after you help God of War's anti-hero, Kratos, brutally pummel a Fury, one of a trio of female antagonists in the game. (Though it's not a spoiler in light of the fact that Kratos beats everyone up, we've omitted the trophy description.) The change comes after negative reaction from early reviews to the jarring scene on and the attached award, which is perceived as misogynistic.
"We have created and will soon push out a patch for God of War: Ascensionthat alters the title of one of the game Trophies. The text was offensive to some members of our community and impacted their enjoyment of the game," Sony Santa Monica's statement noted. "We are endlessly committed to ensuring that our community can fully enjoy the experiences the team has created. As such, we've addressed the feedback and amended the Trophy in question."
Players will be instructed to download the update once God of War: Ascensionhas been inserted into an internet-connected PlayStation 3. No other aspect of the game is affected by the patch.

Star Wars: First Assault, an unannounced game from LucasArts, has been put on hold, Kotaku reports. First Assault was going to host a closed beta in September, with a launch scheduled for this spring, but when Disney bought LucasFilm in September the project was put on hold, the website says.
The September beta timeline agrees with a leaked image promoting First Assault on XBLA, uncovered in early October.
Kotaku cites someone "no longer familiar with the goings-on" at LucasArts, but with knowledge of the project for the following information: First Assault was a downloadable, multiplayer shooter supporting up to 16 players in various Star Wars worlds, and was supposed to test interest in a rebuilt Battlefront game. After years of being passed around studios, having been nearly completed andcanceled, starting Battlefront 3 from scratch would probably be a good call.
We've reached out to LucasArts for more information.
