Sony touts consumer acceptance of downloadable store; 100+ games on the way this year
PlayStation Vita owners are getting comfortable with the idea of digital distribution. While physical media still account for the lion's share of Vita software sales, Sony's director of product planning and platform software innovation Don Mesa told IGN that one-third of all Vita games sold are downloaded.
"Our users are embracing the PlayStation Store on the device and finding it very easy to download and get their games on their device and start playing," Mesa said.
Sony is also looking to address criticism of the system's software lineup. Mesa said the company expects more than 100 games to arrive on the Vita in 2013 alone. There was no indication how many of those 100+ games would be retail products, downloadable only titles, or PlayStation Mobile efforts.
Mesa acknowledged some negative sentiment directed at the Vita, but said a Sony survey found 86 percent of owners were satisfied with their purchases. He also said the average Vita owner reported using the system for 18.7 hours each week.

Saints Row IV may be the first Saints Row title from new publisher Deep Silver, but the game will act as the "logical conclusion" of the Saints Row story up until this point. Your character has become the President, fighting off an invading alien force named the Xen with an impressive array of guns, vehicles, and superpowers. GamesIndustry International spoke to Saints Row IV senior producer Jim Boone and principal designer Scott Phillips and PAX East 2013, who said the series will be going out with a bang.
"We're definitely taking this one about as far as we can go. We'd like to say - at least with this saga - we're definitely taking Saints Row to its logical conclusion," said Boone.
"Even on Saints Row The Third, I remember thinking, 'I don't know how we'd top this.' In terms of over-the-top with zombies, a Helicarrier, and Mission on Mars, I don't know how we go further than that. Somehow, I think we did it. This is planned to be the end of this saga of Saints Row. You start as President and I think we end it in a relatively conclusive manner," added Phillips.
One mode that won't be returning in Saints Row IV is previous game's Whored Mode, which resembles Horde Modes in other titles like Gears of War.
"It worked really well in [Saints Row The Third] and themes of The Third, but I think we would've been forcing it to bring it in for IV. Thematically, our angle with the president/aliens/superpowers just doesn't quite fit. We have other things that I think you'll be pleased with," said Boone.
Saints Row IV is coming to PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on August 20.

The Dutch indie has announced that its next game, a dogfighting shmup called Luftrausers, will be gracing Sony’s consoles when it’s released. The game marks the studio’s second time developing for Sony platforms after it brought Super Crate Box to PS Mobile.Luftrausers is about “being the best fighter pilot in the world,” and, as you can see from the trailer below, looks to be a suitably hectic take on aerial combat reminiscent of Steve Waldo’s 1987 classic Wings Of Fury. But there’s a construction element, too, with 125 possible combinations of components and weapons for your plane. The game is due sometime this spring and will also be available for PC, Mac and Linux.

Sony Computer Entertainment and Unity Technologies have entered into a "strategic partnership", which will result in PlayStation optimised Unity development tools. SCE has confirmed it will offer Unity for PlayStation, which will be optimised for use across Sony platforms including PS3, PS4, PS Vita and PS Mobile. The tool will also be used to "create games for future cloud services".According to SCE's release, Unity for PlayStation will allow developers to port versions of Unity games to Sony devices without "rewriting the code from scratch". The tools will also be optimised for Vita control features including the rear touchpad. While games built using Unity have appeared on Sony consoles - including the Vita title Escape Plan - the new toolset will allow developers to bring their Unity titles over to Sony platforms with ease. This could lead to more studios using Unity - a predominantly PC-focused toolset - adapting their games to Sony devices.According to Unity Technologies CEO David Helgason, the move coincides with Sony's efforts to embrace independent studios. "Sony Computer Entertainment is really committed to making their platforms approachable to all kinds of developers, so this partnership is going to make a lot of sense for both companies... and a lot of sense for the Unity community."They're really focused on bringing the most creative studios, with an emphasis on independent developers, on board their platforms and we are leading the charge to make development awesome for studios of all sizes," Helgason said in a statement.According to SCE senior vice president Teiji Yutaka, Unity for PlayStation means "PlayStation gamers can look forward to playing a broad array of new creative games from Unity's global community of developers, which includes some of the best independent talent in the industry."Games currently in development using Unity tools include Wasteland 2 and Robert Bowling's Breach and Clear.

EA is slowly ramping up its Battlefield 4 hype machine ahead of the game’s official unveiling on March 26th.
A new teaser site carries an obscured image that can be partially revealed when players use their mouse to wipe condensation from the screen. Those who log in via their Origin account are greeted with an image of tanks in an urban city scene.
The site promises to reveal more images as more users log in. In addition, those who do log in earn a free ‘I Was There’ dogtag for use in Battlefield 3.
Although nothing is official as of yet, it is believed that Battlefield 4 will launch this Q4 on both current and next-gen consoles.

We’ve had Street Fighter X Tekken, but where’s the other game that was announced as part of the deal between Namco Bandai and Capcom?
Tekken X Street Fighter has been conspicuous in its absence this year, and now perhaps we have an idea why.
"We are changing and considering platform strategy,” producer Katsuhiro Harada told a fan on Twitter. “That's why we don't say anything."
The most obvious conclusion is that the game is now in development for PS4 and Durango, although of course that may not necessarily be correct. Could Namco/Capcom move the game away from consoles and onto smartphones? Might it be a test bed for a freemium payment model?

Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream is working on new next-gen project destined for PS4, according to co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumière.Beyond: Two Souls, which was demonstrated to press today, is currently only in development for PS3.But this next game may not keep in step with the studio’s narrative-heavy template.“For us, a new console is another reason to try and innovate,” said Fondaumière. “What is certain is that whatever we’re working on [on] PS4 is not going to resemble what we’re doing on PS3… We’re going to try and reinvent ourselves.“Innovation is part of our DNA. We’ve never duplicated ourselves. We never clone ourselves or other people’s projects; we always try to create unique experiences.”

Classic PS2 fighter Capcom vs. SNK 2 has been confirmed for a re-release on PS3 via the 'PS2 Classics' section of the PlayStation Store. Capcom USA boss Christian Svensson confirmed the news, saying that the firm aims to have the game out by "the end of April"."[The] current schedule for the release of the PS2 game is the end of April," he said. "Mind you, if Sony chooses, that could move (it is later than I had originally anticipated already)," admitted Svensson.Expect the game to arrive as a 'PS2 Classic', which means it'll be an emulated version of the PS2 game without any HD changes or updates.Capcom Vs. SNK 2 director creator Hideaki Itsuno originally only teased plans to revive the game on current consoles back in October 2012.CVS2 pits Capcom's Street Fighter's against a gallery of SNK's finest brawlers and brought together their divergent fighting systems. It is highly regarded in competitive fighting game circles and still does the rounds in tournaments.

Mendel’s Farm is Static Games‘ entry for pan-European development competition Make Something Unreal Live 2013. Project lead Ryan Pinfield and his colleagues are down to the final four of the contest, which sees them demoing their game to crowds at UK technology event The Gadget Show Live in April. The contest – which earns the winner a UDK 4 commercial licence – could propel Static into full production of the game as a console title, according to 21-year-old Pinfield. “We are working with a next-gen engine and therefore we are developing a next-gen game. We can release it for PS4, but it can easily be made multiplatform and would also make sense on PC,” he says. “The iOS market is saturated. But the PlayStation 4 is a brand new console, which is exciting. We believe Mendel’s Farm can be a launch title. That’s a feasible target if we win Make Something Unreal.”Pinfield’s ambitions are laudable and far from unrealistic, according to the team’s mentor Jim Walker, an executive producer at UK developer Climax Studios. “There are things I can say and can’t say about PS4,” he explains. “Certainly I see nothing wrong with what Ryan is suggesting there. The timing is good and it may well touch on a number of things.“Mendel’s Farm is an interesting idea. And we did talk about whether there was any mileage in social mobile. But I think Hay Day touches on too many similar specifics and it’s important Mendel’s Farm has an identity of its own. And, besides, without shooting for the stars you are never going to get to the moon.”

At the end of February, Sony and Naughty Dog flipped the freebie switch onUncharted 3: Drake's Deception multiplayer. Since then, over 350,000 individuals worldwide have downloaded the free client.
The news comes as part of a DLC announcement over on the PlayStation Blog, where Naughty Dog reveals it will offer new DLC every month until June, starting first with "Oddball" avatar accoutrements celebrating Extraterrestrial Abductions Day. Some "Oddball" items include a duct tape mask, a bag for your avatar's head and a burlap sack, also for your head – because nothing celebrates alien abductions quite like a sombrero.

Rumors from Japan suggest the upcoming remaster of Final Fantasy X – remember, it's not a remake – will come bundled with another game on PS3: a remastered version of its direct sequel, Final Fantasy X-2. Though each will supposedly be sold on a single PS3 disc, the latest issue of Japanese mag Shonen Jump says they'll be separately available on Vita.
The remaster of Final Fantasy X was first announced back in late 2011, only for Square Enix to go silent for almost the next two years. The HD version resurfaced last month, when Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto gave us a brief glimpse at the game running on PS Vita. Square Enix has said an announcement with further details regarding the Final Fantasy X remaster is coming "soon."

Information reportedly leaked out of this week's Famitsu puts a July 25 release date on the Japanese version of Vanillaware's PS3/Vita fantasy action gameDragon's Crown. The game's official website promises some kind of update on March 21, which would square with the timing of the official magazine release.
The idea that Dragon's Crown is that close to release seems like something of a relief, after a troubled development cycle that saw publishing duties, and development assistance, handed off from Ignition Entertainment to Atlus.
This is a good time to be a fan of this type of game. In addition to Dragon's Crown, Korean ratings point to an updated release of Capcom's Dungeons and Dragons arcade games – on which Vanillaware founder George Kamitani served as producer.
