Morpheme 4, xaitControl, Enlighten, PhysX, Apex and SpeedTree supporting new console
A wave of game development middleware firms including Naturalmotion, Geomerics and xaitment have pledged support for Sony’s PS4.
Tools now compatible with the next-gen console include xaitControl, morpheme 4, SpeedTree , PhysX, Apex and Enlighten.
We will continue adding to the list as more tools get announced, so check back for further additions.
MORPHEME 4
Naturalmotion’s new animation tool Morpheme 4 offers developers advanced prediction modelling capabilities to help build complex integrations between animation and AI systems, while a new ScatterBlend parametric blend node has also been introduced to the tech to help streamline animator workflow.
ENLIGHTEN
Geomerics has announced its lighting tech Enlighten, which has been used in titles such as Battlefield 3, will also support PS4 development. The middleware outfit stated that with a dramatic increase in memory and computer resource in Sony’s new console would mean much better and more realistic dynamic lighting in next-gen titles.

Sony’s decision to up the PS4’s internal memory from 4GB to 8GB of DDR5 may seem like a tiny detail, but developers are delighted by the decision.
Specifically, Dishonored's lead level designer Christophe Carrier described his joy at the news to Eurogamer.
"As a level designer we are struggling against memory every day," he enthused.
"We cut things, we remove things, we strip things, we split the levels, we remove NPCs from levels because there's not enough memory.
"So knowing that memory is something that is going to be improved in the next generation of consoles – to us, it's a joy. It's something that we were waiting for.

The Vita's Plus-enhanced port of Dead or Alive 5 gets hit with a demo "close" to the game's launch in North America on March 19. That may well mean it arrives after launch - Team Ninja was more concrete earlier this week about aNinja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge demo hitting before launch.
As demos go, however, DOA5 Plus's looks like it'll provide a good sample of the game. It supports Cross-Play with PS3 players of DOA5 as well as the new Touch Fight mode, and includes eight stages and four characters to play as (Eliot, Hayabusa, Kasumi, and Tina) while fighting any of the roster as computer opponents. Also, being able to transfer save data from the demo to the actual game is always something of a .

At E3, Sega showed off Hatsune Miku Project Diva F in its booth, tricking me into thinking it was being localized, when instead it was there just because. It felt like a cruel tease.
Sega is now teasing fans more directly, asking them to "like & share" onFacebook to register their interest in a western release of the PS3 version of the music game, which stars the implausibly popular mascot character of musical voice synthesis software.
As of writing, 3,969 people have "liked" it on Facebook, although many of them, in the way of all Internet fanbases, used their comments to ask for other games. While the fate of this game is in question, you can interact with the character via the Japanese Domino's Pizza app, which is inexplicably Miku-themed, and inexplicably available in the US.

With God War: Ascension's release this month bringing to an end the brutal action game's run on the PlayStation 3, developer Sony Santa Monica can dare to dream about the next God of War game on the just announced PlayStation 4."We're going to be able to show a lot more, right?" lead game designer Mark Simon told Eurogamer."If you give us enough time and you give us those specs, we will blow you away. Our team's pretty good."Sony shocked many when it announced the PS4 would include a whopping 8GB or RAM. Eurogamer's already spoken to the development community about the PS4's specs, and most are enthusiastic about the extra horsepower. So is Santa Monica Studio, Sony's huge, 150-200 person Los Angeles-based first-party team responsible for the God of War series and the production of other PlayStation-exclusives, including PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, The Unfinished Swan and Journey."Well, the hardware itself has 16 times the memory we had on the previous console," Simon continued. "The hardware takes a lot of the shackles off in terms of visuals."But those anxious to see the next-gen God of War in action shouldn't hold their breath - Simon confirmed the God of War development team's focus is squarely on Ascension, the first title in the series to feature multiplayer."To me [the PS4] is imagination land," he said. "We haven't touched it. We're not even concentrating on it. All we're concentrating on is we know we release in a week. I imagine we're going to be on our forums talking to players about the stuff they're experiencing in multiplayer and trying to address that stuff immediately. We're going to have half of our team ready to go for that stuff.

Just because the PlayStation 4 centers around an AMD-based platform doesn't mean that NVIDIA is out of the picture. The graphics firm is updating the software developer kits for both its Apex dynamics framework and PhysX physics modeling system to address Sony's new console, even if they won't have the full hardware acceleration that comes with using NVIDIA's own chipsets. The introductions will mostly take some of the guesswork out of creating realistic-looking games -- theoretically, adding a larger number of collisions, destructible objects and subtler elements like cloth and hair modeling. Most of us won't see the fruits of the updated SDKs until at least this holiday, but programmers looking for more plausible PS4 game worlds can hit the source links.

Sony’s decision to slash the Vita’s price to just ¥19,980 – that’s around £140! – has certainly reaped rewards.
The powerful handheld shifted 62,543 units in Japan last week according to Media Create data. That’s a very significant jump over the 11,456 units sold the week before.
It wasn’t quite enough to beat the market leader, however, with Nintendo’s 3DS selling 77,439 units.
Perhaps the worst news was reserved for Wii U, which came in behind Sony’s PSP once again – 11,171 units verses 10,021.

Remember Lost Planet 3? It’s been almost a year since it was announced, but at last the game has a release date.
Capcom has confirmed that the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC title will arrive on June 28th in Europe. It will hit America earlier in the week on June 25th.
The game was first revealed at Capcom’s Captivate event last April. It’s being developed by Call of Duty: Finest Hour, Turning Point: Fall of Liberty and Legendary creators Spark Unlimited.
June is traditionally a quiet month for games retailers but Capcom’s announcement adds to what will already be a busy schedule in 2013.
Other titles due out in June include Sony’s The Last of Us, Capcom’s sci-fi outing Remember Me, Disney Infinity, Sega’s Company of Heroes 2 and Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

After a strong set of financial results and our first glimpse of PS4 on February 20th, we spoke to Ubisoft’s EMEA executive director Alain Corre to get the inside story of how the publisher has defied the transition and what Corre thinks of PlayStation 4.How was the PlayStation 4 event for Ubisoft? Are you relieved that you can finally start talking more openly about next-gen platforms?Obviously the current generation is in its seventh or eighth year and we were all waiting for a refresh of technology and I think it’s very good news that Sony has announced a new machine at the end of this year. I think it will re-invigorate the market a lot and it will again give anticipation to a lot of gamers, developers and also lapsed gamers coming back to gaming. When would you want PS4 to launch? We always hope that it can be earlier than later. Sony said yesterday it was holiday so hopefully holiday – we want it as early as possible this year. How much do you think it’ll cost?We really don’t know – that’s really Sony’s remit and they haven’t communicated on that so we can’t speculate. Obviously what we want is for our games to be spread as quickly as they can to as many people as is possible so when the price is lower than higher it is better.

According to Taiwan's Digitimes, sources at the PS4's component makers are saying the plan is to begin shipping the PS4 this August, so it can arrive in stores by the end of the year.
Foxconn and Pegatron Technology will apparently assemble the console for Sony, and the goal is to have an annual shipment of 16 million units. That's... a lot! It such a high number that, quite honestly, I'm not entirely sure I believe it.
That isn't to say I don't think the PS4 will be a hit, but rather, I just don't see Sony flooding the market with sixteen million consoles at the end of this year. Maybe the sources refer to the financial year—which would end in the spring. That makes a little more sense. I guess.
For more on Digitimes, and the accuracy of their rumors, check out this Time article.

You can now stock your Capcom Arcade Cabinet with three more games. The 1985-I pack launched yesterday on PSN and XBLA in North America and today on PSN in Europe, with frustration engine Ghosts 'n' Goblins, vertically scrolling Old West shmup Gun.Smoke and 8-way shooter Section Z. We still don't know why there's a period in "Gun.Smoke" – well, beyond avoiding copyright issues with the TV show.
The pack costs $9.99 or 800 Microsoft Points. Concurrent with its release, the games from last week's pack (1943 and Avengers [not those Avengers]) are available as individual purchases, for $3.99 each. Check Capcom-Unity for a chance to win a FightStick with custom art for this week's games.

Ken Levine's next BioShock is primed for a "strong release," according to Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia. Today, Bhatia increased his first month shipment forecast for BioShock Infinite to 3 million copies, citing "accelerated" pre-order activity at major retailers.
"Our recent channel checks have increased our confidence in the potential for success of Take Two's upcoming title BioShock Infinite. The title has been generating good buzz for some time. With less than three weeks before launch on March 26, we sense growing retailer optimism for this title," he said.
Unlike BioShock 2, which was developed by 2K Marin, BioShock Infinite is being handled once again by Irrational Games, which could help the title to "significantly outperform" BioShock 2, said Bhatia. He also noted that the limited edition of the title, which retails for a sizable $150, "appears to have sold out at most places."
Bhatia's previous first-month estimate was 2.7 million units. Over the long-term, he expects Infinite to cross the 4 million units mark.

The Walking Dead’s all-important narrative arc may not be lost in the transition to next-gen.
Players of the game’s five episodes will have seen their characters develop across each release. While PC players will have no problem keeping hold of this vital progress data, the lack of compatibility between PS3 and PS4 poses a problem to PlayStation fans.
Luckily, talking to IGN developer Telltale has suggested that the studio is already talking to Sony about how players of the first The Walking Dead saga will be able to carry on their personal story on the PS4.
"Season 2 will read what you did in Season 1 and that will tailor some of the things that happened in Season 2,” executive producer Kevin Boyle stated.
“They'll be a lot more social and in-between episode features for Season 2 that definitely exploit what the new platforms have to offer. We're super-excited about PlayStation 4 and what all the other big console manufacturers have in store."

via http://wololo.net/2013/03/06/pymenu-...it-used-to-be/
One of the most widely used menus for eCFW on the PS Vita is about to receive a full update, lots of new features, improved code, optimizations, and much more will come with pyMenu 0.4 and you’re about to see what it can offer, but first we’ll do a walkthrough of all the version pyMenu has had and how it has evolved from being a very simplistic menu, to a full fledged XMB replacement.
pyMenu 0.1: The beginning
pyMenu was created in June 2012 as an entry to the VHBL Menu Contest and competed against yMenu (which was also created for that contest). Most of the work in pyMenu had gone to installing the pspsdk and modifying the python interpreter to be able to load homebrews in VHBL. The little time I had and the time the SDK + interpreter consumed left me with very little time for the actual menu. pyMenu was a pioneer in being written in a language other than c/c++, python to be precise and many thought it was not doable, and even told me to give up. Anyway, the first pyMenu release, having little time as I said, ended up being a mod of psptools, a homebrew I had previously created. This particular version of pyMenu greatly lacked in features, having only two options in the main menu: Game and Savedata.
pyMenu 0.2: improving what was already done
For pyMenu 0.2 not much was added, it followed the same simple design that pyMenu had inherited from psptools. The mayor feature brought by this version was the ability to extract and view eboots icon0 using regex, which was not the best way to go as it failed with some eboots and was generally slower than most methods out there.
pyMenu 0.2 also included a lite version of psptools that allowed you to fix missing files/directories, fix stuck pixels and test out the psp buttons. Another feature this version of pyMenu got was an early version of the file browser, but this was never publicly released.
pyMenu 0.2 biggest feature was extracting and displaying icon0.png, the icons were shown in the upper left corner as back then I didn’t know how to move images around until I came across some psp2d samples. The code that extracted the icons used regex, which means there was always a possibility of failing, in pyMenu 0.3 new code was made by qwikrazor which is faster and more precise and also allows extracting pic1 (we are yet to implement pic1 though)
The help menu looks nicer in pyMenu 0.2
alas, a very early version of the file browser, note: this version of pyMenu (dubbed 0.2.3) was never publicly released, only one copy existed and that was in my vita’s memory stick, had that stick been formatted, we would have never seen this version.
pyMenu 0.3: reviving a dead menu and turning it into a mayor homebrew
Not only pyMenu lost the menu contest, but it also earned very few popularity, most people didn’t like the simplistic nature of the menu, the style of only showing one item at a time was confusing to most people and the lack of features doomed the menu.
Soon people forgot that this menu existed, and that made me abandon the project.
Then some day I found a user mode exploit and was able to run pyMenu with VHBL and released some photos, then people started noticing the menu and I decided to finish the file browser, but instead of releasing pyMenu 0.2.3 I decided to port the browser’s menu style into the rest of pyMenu, and so development of pyMenu 0.3 began.
As the project advanced, new features were added, but I also had a lot headaches in getting some of them to work: the music player was constantly crashing, I couldn’t get isos and csos to boot, and the biggest of them all: extracting icon0 from iso/cso seemed like a really hard task, until another developer, qwikrazo87, decided to learn python and helped out with the icon0 code. To know how pyMenu 0.3 was going I made thread with some preview images, where I also asked for beta-testers, the overall feedback from users was very positive, everyone wanted to test the menu and everyone seemed to like how it was going. A few weeks after that, pyMenu 0.3 was finished.
pyMenu 0.3 was a huge update, bringing new features never done by other menus before such as Music, Picture Viewer, Plugins Manager and a File Browser with full copy, cut, paste, delete support.
in 0.3 my overall knowledge of psp2d allowed me to do more advanced stuff that I couldn’t do with 0.1 and 0.2, this led to the creation of a new menu style dubbed complete menu.
the file browser was finished and improved to provide a full-fledge browsing experience, it can also load known files (txt, mp3, png, jpg, pbp, iso, cso, etc)
pyMenu 0.3 was rich with features, including a plugins manager for ARK and CEF, ability to load isos/csos and view their icons, playing mp3 files, etc
pyMenu 0.3 featured it’s own Blue Screen of Death, many users found it funny to see the BSoD on their Vitas.
pyMenu 0.4: the future of the project
While I thought pyMenu 0.3 was going to be the last version, some users started showing critical bugs, and others started asking if some features could be added. Other devs also showed interest in the project and wanted to contribute to it. That’s when development of pyMenu 0.4 began. The project has been in development for quite some time, and has been kept a secret by people involved in it, be it developers or testers, the existence of pyMenu 0.4 never came out of its private forum.
pyMenu 0.4 is yet another huge leap in the project, it involves reviewing, rewriting and improving code, as well as adding features such as the theme system and submenu system. The ram usage has also been improved greatly, as well as the overall speed, some critical bugs have been fixed and already existing features have been improved to provide a better user experience and make pyMenu a complete replacement for the XMB.

PlayStation 3, the Sony system that has been lagging behind its competitors for seven years straight, might end up being the best selling console of the current generation. Instinctively, it seems unfathomable. The games industry marked PlayStation 3 down as a multi-threaded $600 mess of a device back in 2007 when Sony was busy firing those responsible for it. In the years that followed, Sony spent much of its time trying to wring profitability out of the system more than anything else. Eventually, when the PS3 was finally making steady progress, any faint praise was drowned out by a year-defining catastrophe known as the PSN hack. But here we are today, with an estimated 77 million PS3s sold worldwide, about 23 million units behind the market leader, the Wii - and enough potential in the console to carry on past Nintendo's high-flying system.
- Annual sales comparisons show the Wii boomed then lagged while the PS2 and PS3 have grown steadily
Let's get the clearest fact out of the way: the Wii is not going to sell many more units.Nintendo's revolutionary motion controlled device has performed in a polar opposite manner to the PS3; it sparked hysteria at launch (in one twelve month period it sold a staggering 25 million systems worldwide) but its momentum has slowed significantly.Nintendo could only sell five million Wiis in the 12 months leading up to the Wii U's launch, and Nintendo has in fact downgraded its global Wii sales expectations for the current fiscal year to about 4 million units. And an even more affordable new Wii Mini system has failed to pick up momentum, only managing to shift about 36,000 units since its release on December 7 across Canada.Piers Harding-Rolls, a senior principal analyst at IHS Screen Digest, explained to CVG that said Wii sales "have stalled because the system isn't a connected media device so it doesn't tend to pick up long-tail sales"."In addition, Nintendo relies on first party content and doesn't have the breadth of third-party support to sustain a console once it made the switch to Wii U," he added. http://www.computerandvideogames.com...ole-sales-war/
