The price drop leads to positive gains for Sony's flagging portable
During a Japanese press presentation for One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan president Hiroshi Kawano said that sales for the PlayStation Vita have increased four-fold following the system's price drop.
Media Create numbers prior to the price drop on February 28 show Vita sales of 11,000 units. We'll see numbers for last week on Wednesday, but Kawano's statements could mean sales as high as 44,000.
The week ended on February 24 was also the first time that the PlayStation Vita beat out the Nintendo Wii U in sales.

The world is excited by PS4, but there’s still plenty of PS3s to sell, says Sony.
The company told MCV?this week that in terms of combined hardware, it was actually the No.1 console maker in the UK last year. PlayStation platforms accounted for 36 per cent of the market, compared with 35 per cent for Nintendo’s machines and 29 per cent for Xbox. Data is based on Chart-Track figures.
Now Sony hopes to maintain that momentum, despite the imminent launch of PlayStation 4.
“PS3 is going to be the backbone of all our business this year,” says UK boss Fergal Gara. “Yes we have brand new news, but there’s no reason why the two can’t sit together.”
Sony says God of War, The Last of Us and Beyond plus unannounced games will push the platform this year.
UK marketing director Murray Pannell added: “We have the software that will drive the hardware this year – more than any other platform.”

Eidos Montreal will unveil the fourth game in its stealth FPS series, Thief, next month, but the first screenshots have already surfaced.See our gallery for more. The game sees long-running series protagonist Garrett returns to his stalking ground the City.“We’re handling a precious gemstone with Thief,” says Eidos Montréal GM Stephane D’Astous. “Fans remember the original games very fondly and we want to preserve that essence – which we have excellent experience of doing at Eidos-Montréal – whilst also introducing Thief to a brand new, next-generation, audience.“Our goal is to deliver the fantasy of being Garrett, the master thief, and we’re building this game around that core experience.”Thief is heading to PS4, PC and the next Xbox console next year and, as you’ll see from the gallery through the above link, looks a lot like Arkane’s Dishonored – a game which itself drew a great deal of inspiration from the Thief series.

via http://wololo.net/2013/03/03/the-vit...f-fresh-blood/
The Playstation Vita was out more than a year ago worldwide, and we have yet to see a native hack publicly released. I can see several reasons for that and will try to describe them here.
First, it is essential to understand that the Vita not being hacked “yet” is not an exception. Despite growing rumors, Nintendo’s 3DS has been so far following the same path (the NDS mode of the 3DS is hackable, just like the PSP emulator of the PS Vita is regularly hacked through game vulnerabilities); and it took hackers roughly 4 years to come up with what the general audience consider as the first PS3 jailbreak, back in 2010.
Technical issues
What this shows is that computer manufacturers in general, and Sony in particular with its playstation brand, have stepped up their game in terms of security. Modern programming languages make buffer overflow, if not entirely a vulnerability of the past, at least more difficult to achieve, while modern Operating Systems have increased counter-hack measures. In general these security measures are here for the good of the end-user (you!), to avoid being hacked and getting important information stolen or your computer used as a zombie in a massive Chinese DDoS against your own bank
In the case of the Vita this has the side benefit of allowing Sony to guarantee their hardware stays as locked as possible. As a matter of fact, I would claim that Sony has no interest in their customers’ security in general (did we mention some of your credentials on the PSP are stored in plain text?), and that their only motivation for keeping up to date with latest security measures is to guarantee their business doesn’t get threatened. After all, there only ever was one virus on the PSP in its 7 years of existence.
But I digress. Independently of the motives, the fact is that Sony’s consoles are much more secure than they used to be. The Vita is believed to run an OS based on FreeBSD, and has the security that comes with it, such as a better permissions system than the PSP used to have (which will avoid compromising the entire system if someone ever managed to take control of a specific app). Most likely, the CPU itself embeds security that would prevent our typical user/kernel psp exploits modus operandi. Loading binaries wherever we want in ram is prevented by things such as the NX bit

Iris Manager by 'D_Skywalk' and 'Estwald', is an open source backup manager for the PS3, made with the PSL1GHT SDK.
Changelog 2.20
- New payload v8 syscall eliminating the syscall 36 and used instead to 8 redirections. The syscall 8 works in a hidden in applications, thus respecting the other use that gives the syscall 8 in certain firmwares (LV1 Peek)
- Added multiMAN method for disc-less from / APP_HOME (thanks for commenting DeanK how it works). This increases the compatibility.
- Added patched explore_plugin.sprx method to launch the games from road / dev_bdvd when selecting / app_home/PS3_GAME. This method connects when "No Controller BDVD" and requires that each CFW patched module (see explore_plugin_notes.txt within patch_tools_libfs_exploreplugin.rar). Grid is a game thus far.
- Fixed all (****ing) problems and other productions, as authentication based disks using CFW 3.41, 3.55, 4.21 and 4.31 (yes, I've been to them all)
- Now HDD0 mounts are safer, both for the method how it can be accessed only "/ dev_bdvd" in reading.
- Added ability to restart by pressing TRIANGLE on the main screen
- Iris Manager now works in two ways, thinking about those who have BDVD operational unit and the voiceless.
- New homelaunc1 (must be installed because the former will not work)
This is a summary of the disk operating modes:
Available options are:
Requires Disc:
- With controller, disk not only asks "Yes" if no blocking routes / APP_HOME. This may prevent it from interfering with games.
- No Controller: obviously hard but never require it to "No" will be provided / APP_HOME (some games with trophies bug report, if this option is set to no). For riding HDD0 is protected.
BD Emu
- Mount BDVD: connects libfs_patched.sprx if present and mount the device as a unit / dev_bdvd. No controller is the most compatible option, especially with the "Required Disk" to "No". With controller, disk required (but not cancel / APP_HOME itself)
-LIBFS: simply connect the module and reroute the game / dev_bdvd and / APP_HOME if applicable. No controller is less compatible than "Mount BDVD". With controller, disk required (but not cancel / APP_HOME itself)
- Off: simply redirects the game to / dev_bdvd and / APP_HOME if applicable. It can work with or without disk, depending on the game
START-> Tools (Tools)
- With BDVD controller: To work with or without disc. In mounting options using USB drives or in the case of a patch HDD0 / dev_ps2disc. When activated, it goes to the XMB (to be activated to reenter)
- No controller BDVD: HDD1 is mounted in place. When activated, the unit is expelled if I had a disc inside.
NOTE: there should be no disk in this mode. No controller mode works well without reader (mine is unplugged right now) in 4.3 CFW bdemu Miralatijera with flag on).
"No parent" when required disk mode, connect seeking explore_plugin.sprx that can be easily prepared by extracting from the flash, txt following notes:
I explore_plugin is used to launch games from / dev_bdvd in ausence disc.
The CFW 4.31 Miralatijera includes the flag "bdemu" to work without BDVD controller, but you
Also need one path to launch the games: this is the path
- Extract / dev_flash / vsh / module / explore_plugin.sprx using FTP or from PUP
- Copy to the folder patch_explore_plugin.bat explore_plugin.sprx, scetool (scetool.exe, zlib1.dll
and folder "data" with the Appropriate key)
- In the case of CFW 3.41 porque patch_explore_plugin_for_3.41.bat use patch the game category
to debug too
- Run patch_explore_plugin.bat patch_explore_plugin_for_3.41.bat or as the case
- Rename explore_plugin_patched.sprx as explore_plugin_341.sprx, explore_plugin_355.sprx,
explore_plugin_355dex.sprx, explore_plugin_421.sprx, explore_plugin_421dex.sprx, explore_plugin_430.sprx
or explore_plugin_431.sprx to CORRESPONDENCE With The firmware
- Repeat: explore_plugin must to CORRESPONDENCE With The firmware!
- Copy the explore_plugin to Iris Manager folder (/ dev_hdd0/game/IMANAGER4)
- Enable BD-Emu Manager options in Iris "Without BDVD Controller" (press START, Tools) to work.
With preference, use "Mount BDVD" option Because It moves the game to the root of the device
(Do not worry, the fake / device is write protected dev_bdvd)
Without explore_plugin patched you can not connect / app_home/PS3_GAME with / dev_bdvd and the mode is useless

The second game in Sony's Wonderbook line-up of Eyetoy games, Diggs Nightcrawler, is due this May in Europe on PS3, Sony has announced. No North American release date has been confirmed.Diggs Nightcrawler follows the adventures of the titular literal bookworm/sleuth as he solves crimes in the cartoony noirish burg Library City. It's got a lovable, Pixar-esque art style - as can be seen in the new trailer below - and it was developed by interactive storytelling company Moonbot Studios whose The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore won an Academy Award before the studio translated it into an interactive iOS app.Now if Sony released more than one game every six months for its book-you-don't-have-to-read it could be onto something.

Sony Europe president Jim Ryan has emphasized that the PS Plus program will be around for the longhaul, and is expected to play a “prominent role” in the Playstation 4 era.
In an interview on the PS Europe Blog, Ryan stated that the service is considered “a core part of the way forward” for Sony – though he didn’t go into any specifics on future plans. Ryan added that the company is “very happy” with the well-received PS Plus.
The SCEE president also revealed that the firm has the PS3 in mind for its release schedule well after the PS4’s launch this holiday season.
“PS3 is a very important part of our portfolio, certainly in 2013, 2014 and probably beyond that,” Ryan said.

‘But what did the console look like?’
That was the frequently asked question in the wake of last week’s PS4 press conference. For some critics, ten new games, a new controller, a Kinect-style camera, the full specs and an abundance of cloud services wasn’t quite enough.
“There seems to be a disproportionate amount of noise about the lack of a box and I really don’t get it,” a perplexed Jim Ryan, who heads up PlayStation in Europe, told MCV the day after the New York reveal.
“It was more important to describe what the device is capable of, rather than what it looks like.”
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot – who revealed the Watch Dogs for PS4 live on stage – was sympathetic to Sony’s decision to hold the design back. “Sony can’t show everything on the first day or they won’t have anything else for later on,” he tells us.
But despite the omission, Sony’s New York show offered us plenty to dissect, discuss and debate.
From the off Sony pitched PS4 as a games machine. This was about the ‘future of play.’ Movie and music services were relegated to a fleeting reference. Compare that to Microsoft’s ‘entertainment’ message, where Xbox now stands for music and video, plus games.
“That was a very conscious decision,” Ryan says. “There will be a comprehensive suite of non-game services for music and video.
“But the emphasis is on PS4 as a gaming device. And that philosophy has gone into the heart of how we designed the machine.”
The more Sony’s press conference went on, the more PS4 revealed itself as more like a PC than your typical home console.
It is built using PC components, boasts indie developer support, has a wealth of cloud features and social options, and can host free-to-play and episodic games. PS4 is so much like a PC that even Blizzard is making games for it.
“PS4 has taken everything that the PC and mobile has,” says Guillemot. “Social is possible, we can update, we can have user-generated content, we can have people seeing other people playing, you can have eSports. All those elements are what we wanted to see on the new consoles, on-top of better graphics and so forth.
“But it’s more than a PC under the TV. It’s a machine that will be the same for everyone. The software is well adapted to your machine, and it’s easy to use and it won’t be too expensive.”
“It’s more than a PC under the TV. It’s a machine
that will be the same for everyone. The software is
well adapted to your machine, and it’s easy to use
and it won’t be too expensive.” Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot
Does that mean PS4 has silenced its critics that proclaimed the console under the TV will be extinct? And that the future is all about Steam, and cloud gaming, and tablets, and mobile, and all the other devices and services that have risen to prominence over the last two years?
“I think it did,” says Ryan.
“What Andy [House, PlayStation boss], Mark [Cerny, the man behind PS4] and the rest did on stage was demonstrate the viability and importance of a premium console gaming experience.
“There’s no doubt a lot of gaming is happening on smartphones and tablets, compared with a couple of years ago. But our prize is to migrate people from having a rudimentary experience on a tablet, and get them playing Killzone on PS4.”
Guillemot adds: “People need to see what games will be created on PS4, and that will make them understand the power of this generation. You have a cycle that is eight years long, and you’re surprised that after five years it starts to decline? When you come with new machines and new possibilities, you give talent the chance to express themselves. You will see a huge surge in creativity and engagement from gamers.”
The new DualShock 4 pad features a whole host of new elements, such as a touchpad and a speaker. But perhaps the most interesting part of the controller is its Share button, which lets users share videos of their in-game exploits via Facebook.
This instantly appeals to the YouTube generation of gamers, who are watching tournaments and pro-gamers via video streams. In fact, this feature will help PS4 take part in the eSports sector.

Amid all the fuss last week over PlayStation 4, it was easy to overlook the sudden Nintendo Direct-style live-streamed Vita presentation a couple of days before. Presented by SCEJ president Hiroshi Kawano, broadcast only in Japanese and aimed squarely at the domestic market, the event was Sony’s way of reminding Vita owners here that it hasn’t abandoned them entirely – this was of course before the world knew of Vita’s forthcoming connectivity with PS4.One reason the presentation was easy to overlook is that really there was nothing much in it for Western gamers. The Vita is getting a much-needed price drop in Japan, from 29,980 yen (£214.20) for the 3G model and 24,980 yen (£178.50) for the Wi-Fi model to a flat 19,980 yen (£142.80) for either, but there has been no such sweetener in Europe or the US. And the roundup of games was almost entirely bereft of surprises, let alone titles with global appeal. But for gamers in Japan it wasn’t a bad haul, and sales figures for that week (17-23 February) showed an uptick in Vita sales – before the 28th February price drop even officially kicked in. As some stores reportedly applied the discount early, Sony’s ailing handheld even outsold Wii U that week. Vita sales were up to 11,456 on 8,044 the week before, beating Wii U’s 9,633 sold, according to Japanese game-industry tracker Media Create.

Ubisoft's newest instalment in the Assassin's Creed franchise has finally cast off, despite a launch riddled with leaks.
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will see players experience the true 'golden age of piracy' in what Ubisoft believes to be 'the most varied world we've ever made in an AC game.'
Set to launch on November 1st on PC, Xbox 360, PS3, WiiU – and even next-gen offerings PS4 and possibly the Xbox 720 – Black Flag will not be the DLC or spin-off that many were expecting and will in fact be an entirely new story, complete with new characters and locations.
As hinted by its title, Black Flag will be a pirate game. But Ubisoft has said it will 'shy away from clichés' and offer a sea-plundering experience much different than that, which is often portrayed by Hollywood.
