Sony has pledged to reveal its 'release plans for PS4' at its pre-Gamescom media briefing on August 20.
The company has said via its official site that the show will contain 'updates on PS3 and Vita', alongside information on the much-anticipated launch of its next-gen console.
Sony's press briefing will take place at the Saatenhaus am Rheinpark in Cologne, starting at 7pm CET (6pm UK) on August 20. Microsoft will host its press conference on the same day, and it will be critical for both firms to impress, with the expected arrivals of Xbox One and PS4 looming ever closer.
As it stands, Sony's official word on the PS4 launch is a vague 'holiday 2013', although it's widely expected to go head-to-head with the Xbox One in November.
Two notable European retailers listed the PS4 release date as November 13, 2013, before Sony deemed the listings as 'purely speculative'.
Industry analysts have deemed it in both firms' best interest to launch first in order to grab an early spotlight over the competitor.
The Gamescom expo runs from August 21 - 25. The first day will be industry only, before doors open to the public on Aug. 22.

Microsoft’s Xbox One TV ambitions are well known, but new reports suggest Sony intends to take the digital TV fight to its rival.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Sony has reached a preliminary deal with Viacom that will see it provide paid streaming access to the likes of MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon.
These services will be offered via PS4 and also on some of Sony’s digital TV sets, the site claims. The plan is apparently being led by Sony’s gaming division.
It doesn’t end there, either – Sony is allegedly also in talks with Disney, ESPN, Warner, HBO and CBS.
“While Sony would need to strike other programming deals to create a compelling alternative to conventional pay-TV services, even a single deal represents a big shift within the entertainment industry,” WSJ says.
“Big channel owners have been reluctant to license their programs to Internet-TV services for fear of undercutting the lucrative arrangements they have with cable, satellite and phone companies.”

They may carry the same name, but there are two versions of FIFA 14 on the way this year.
September 27th sees the release of FIFA 14 on Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii, PSP, Vita, 3DS and PS2. However, the version of FIFA 14 heading to Xbox One and PS4 (whenever they decide to make an appearance) will be a very different beast.
Current-gen FIFA 14 is a refined version of the game we play today, albeit with an impressive range of improvements that according to critics make it feel quite different to FIFA 13.
Next-gen FIFA 14, however, is built on EA’s much-touted Ignite engine. And that makes all the difference.
“Put them side by side and play them one after the other, then you realise how vastly different they are. It’s remarkable,” executive producer David Rutter told OPM.
“[Next-gen] gives us the ability to render with more fidelity. We’ve got roughly ten times as much animation in the next-gen version. You can take shots in places that weren’t there in previous generations. On next-gen, shooting has the full power of Ignite behind it, so you’ve got tonnes more animations in there.
“We’re really pleased with the synergy between the build-up to the shot and the connection actually happening.”
Producer Kantcho Doskov added: “Locomotion is the lowest-level system in FIFA gameplay, meaning it affects everything else – you change the locomotion system, you have to rebalance dribbling, positioning, first touch. All the other systems hinge on player movement.”
Next-gen FIFA 14 will contain an additional mode, too. It’s called Living Worlds and aims “to capture the essence of storytelling in football like never before”.

The publisher has confirmed that the game will be released on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on February 28th 2014 in Europe.
It will arrive in North America on February 25th.
“Garrett the Master Thief is entangled in the growing layers of conflict between Baron Northcrest and the oppressed masses led by Orion, the voice of the people,” the blurb reads.
“In a City on the brink of revolution, Garrett’s skills are all he can trust as he walks the fine line between politics and the people.”

The executive producer of Call of Duty: Ghosts has said that the PC version of the game will boast the strongest visuals.
That’s perhaps not surprising, of course – it’s not difficult to beat a next-gen beating gaming PC right now on a moderate budget – but with development currently focusing on PS4 and Xbox One it can’t be taken for granted that PC releases will be getting any extra love.
"PC is taking a different tack from previous games [in the series,]" Mark Rubin told Kotaku. "Now, PC has its own set of assets. It's going to look better than any Call of Duty we've ever made on PC.
"They're actually using an even higher version in many cases than the next-gen consoles, from a texture standpoint."
The PC versions of previous Infinity Ward COD titles have to date always used the same assets as the console releases, Rubin added.

Analyst firm IHS Electronics and Media has praised Sony’s decision to lock multiplayer behind a PlayStation Plus paywall.
Sony confirmed at E3 that PS4 owners will have to subscribe to PS+ if they wish to access online multiplayer – a function that is currently free for PS3 owners.
“Sony has already taken a major step towards a more profitable and competitive PlayStation business with a single but significant commercial decision to place online multiplayer gaming behind the PlayStation Plus subscription paywall,” IHS’ Piers Harding-Rolls told MCV.
“IHS forecasts that Sony's change in strategy will help generate $1.2bn in annual consumer spending on PlayStation Plus subscriptions by 2017 and will give Sony access to an essential and substantial new revenue stream, one which Microsoft has enjoyed since the launch of Xbox Live way back in 2002.”
The company adds that PS+ subscriptions generated a “relatively minor” $140m in 2012. In the same period Microsoft made $1.25bn in Xbox Live subscriptions. In fact, Xbox Live has since launch made in the region of $4.7bn in subscription fees.
Added Harding-Rolls: “Sony's decision to emulate Microsoft's paid-for multiplayer gaming strategy levels the playing field and will allow it to invest more heavily in its PlayStation Network infrastructure and services and to compete head-to-head with Microsoft during the next console generation.
“Sony is positioning itself to deliver its most profitable PlayStation business since the launch of the PlayStation 3. IHS believes that lower research and development costs for PlayStation 4 hardware, additional revenue streams from online service subscriptions and a more aggressive transition to higher margin digital content sales are combining to strengthen Sony's games business outlook even in the face of increased competition from cheap Android consoles and alternative devices eating into consumers' gaming time, including smartphones and tablets.”

Pre-orders for Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag are higher on Xbox One and PS4 than on current generation platforms, says Ubisoft.
European chief Alain Corre told MCV that the transition to the next generation of consoles will be faster than expected.
It follows comments from UK retailers last month (MCV 745, 06/07/13), who claimed the lack of games released exclusively on PS4 and Xbox One, coupled with big current-gen games like GTA V, will dissuade consumers from upgrading.
“The fans are really excited to get their hands on the new technology,” Corre said. “It has been eight years without a home console from Sony or Microsoft so we feel a lot of excitement from our fans for Watch Dogs or Assassin’s Creed IV. The pre-orders we are getting are much bigger on our next-gen games.
“So we feel that the transition might be quicker. There is a real appetite for change.”
In terms of Ubisoft’s own titles, he said: “We expect Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag to be well accepted. When we look at our pre-orders on next-gen, we think these two games can feature in the Top Five.”
Corre added: “There is a number of good quality products at launch [for each console]. I think that will bring back a lot of lapsed gamers and it will also seduce new consumers to spend some more time on interactive entertainment.
“So we’re full of confidence heading into 2014.”

Blizzard has teamed up with GAME to stage Diablo III lock-in events across the UK in celebration of the game's console debut.
The events will be held at 18 of the retailer's stores across the UK and take place on August 29th and 30th. Consumers will be able to go hands-on with the dungeon crawling title ahead of its release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 3rd.
In addition to trying out the game, all attendees will be entered into a prize draw and have the chance to win a trip to Blizzcon 2013 in California.
Those consumers who are unable to make any of the events, but pre-order Diablo III from GAME will still be eligible for the prize draw.
Players can register their attendance for the event by either dropping in-store, by phone – or even tweeting their local store directly.
Charlotte Knight, category director at GAME said: “We’re thrilled to be working with Blizzard to give console gamers the chance to experience Diablo III’s intense gameplay which has been hand crafted for console before the game launches.”
Knight added: “Our lock-in series are a huge hit with our communities, and we continue to work harder to bring more content and more events to our customers. The NFL's regular season is just around the corner, but those hoping to fire up their PlayStation 3 consoles to stream games through DirecTV's NFL Sunday Ticket app will need to find a new method. Sony recently confirmed to IGN that the service will not be available on PS3 this year.
The reason for the switch remains unclear, though Microsoft announced a partnership with the NFL during its Xbox One reveal event in May that has yet to be clarified. The partnership involves live broadcasts of NFL games through Xbox One. Additionally, those that pre-order the special edition of Madden NFL 25 through Amazon this year receive a free year of NFL Sunday Ticket's PC and mobile service.
PS3 owners won't be totally in the dark, however, as the console received a new Live Events Viewer app this week. The app offers both free and pay-per-view streaming options for sporting events and other live entertainment events like concerts, starting with WWE's SummerSlam this Sunday. Live Events Viewer is free to download from the PlayStation Store.
Update: DirecTV has confirmed with Joystiq that NFL Sunday Ticket will not be available on PS3, nor will it be available this year on Xbox 360 or Xbox One.
Update #2: DirecTV has also confirmed that NFL Sunday Ticket will not be available through the PS4.

There are big open-world games out there, some bigger than GTA5 - but there will be none stuffed with as much content, Rockstar believes."In terms of raw man-hours, this has been way in excess of any project we've done at Rockstar before," Rockstar North art director Aaron Garbut told Buzzfeed."From the outset, we wanted to ensure that not only was the world big but that it was absolutely packed with character and life. It's levels of magnitude above Grand Theft Auto 4 in terms of what we've done on the environment side."I know there are bigger games out there geographically, but I don't think there are in terms of content. I want to stress that not only is this world huge but it's absolutely handcrafted. Every little bit of this world has had a large number of extremely talented artists pore over it. There's always something to discover, something weird or interesting to see or interact with."It's absolutely not a massive, empty world."

Battlefield 4 stats can be transferred from current to next-gen consoles, DICE has confirmed.
The news comes via announcements on official Microsoft and Sonywebsites. Those who purchase and play the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 versions of Battlefield 4 will be able to transfer their statistics to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions when they release in November.
The current-gen editions of Battlefield 4 release on October 29. With next-gen consoles releasing in November.
According to the post on the Xbox site, all earned stats, ranks and gear will carry over upon upgrade to the Xbox One version. The transfer can only be carried out once.
Season Passes purchased for the Xbox 360 version will also "seamlessly transfer" over to the Xbox One.
The transfer confirmation comes only weeks after DICE said it was "investigating" the possibility of enabling current- to next-gen player stat transferals for Battlefield 4.
DICE unveiled its new Battlelog service last month, which will allow users to track statistics, configure loadouts and search servers via mobile, tablet or desktop PC.
Battlefield 4's multiplayer "genuinely took our breath away" during ahands-on session at E3 2013.
Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will launch in November, though Microsoft announced earlier today that the console will be delayed into 2014 ineight European markets.

From the Land of the Rising Sun comes Vita Games of the Falling Prices. Sony's running a two-week PSN sale on Japanese-developed entries for its gaming portable, and, like the toppings on an okonomiyaki, there are a variety of tasty-looking morsels on offer.
The highlights of the first week are Keiji Inafune's action-RPG Soul Sacrifice and Team Ninja port-of-a-port Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Plus, down to $25 and $28, respectively. The discounts are much more appealing with a PS Plus subscription; Soul Sacrifice is just $17.49 and Sigma 2Plus $19.59. Those prices and the other first week offers are available starting today, through to Monday, August 19.
A couple of fighters top the second week's bill, which runs August 20-26. During that time you can pick up Dead or Alive 5 Plus for $20, but here's an even more attractive equation: Dead or Alive 5 Plus plus PlayStation Plus equals just $10. Similarly, Street Fighter X Tekken looks good at the lowered price of $28, but the PS Plus price of $19.59 is even better.
There are 18 Japanese games in total in the Vita sale; check out the PlayStation Blog for the full list of whens and how muches.

Farming Simulator, the enhanced console version of Giants Software's ubiquitous Farming Simulator 2013, will hitch up its plow and furrow the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360's fertile fields on September 4 and September 6 in North America and the UK, respectively.
In addition to all of the content present in the PC version (read: cows, tractors, etc), the console port also includes a new American (!!) farm and more vehicles. While we can't really spot any huge geographical differences between the farm in these new screenshots and what we've seen of the game previously, we assume that its Americanness will become obvious once you reach the bald eagle husbandry portion of the game.
What's that? There's no bald eagle husbandry or buffalo roaming? Well then.http://www.joystiq.com/2013/08/13/fa...nsoles-sept-4/

Retailer leaks have less expensive console with 16GB of flash memory on sale starting Sunday
Sony is apparently ready to bring its 16GB flash-based PlayStation 3 to North America. Canadian retailerFuture Shop today put up a product page for the latest redesign of Sony's system with a $199.99 price tag.
The listing was pulled, but not before Engadget got a screen capture of it. The tech site also posted a photo of the new 12GB console, purportedly taken in a US K-mart stockroom, with a packing note not to display the unit for sale until August 18.
If the pricing is accurate, the 12GB PS3 would represent a price cut for Sony's system. Currently, the least expensive commonly available PS3s in stores go for $270, but come bundled with a game.
The 12GB PS3 was originally released in Europe last October. At the time, Sony Computer Entertainment America explained the decision by saying it wanted to make sure consumers wouldn't be space-constrained if they preferred digital distribution of content to traditional retail options.

Reckon Grand Theft Auto V will outsell Grand Theft Auto IV? Then one UK betting agency wants a word.
William Hill is offering odds of 4/6 that GTA V will sell over 11m copies in its first month on sale or 11/10 on it falling short of that number.
That statistic, although not widely reported at the time, seems to come from Take-Two’s Q2 2008 financial report where it was confirmed that the publisher had shipped 11m units to retail and sold 8.5m copies of the game by May 31st2008 – GTA IV was released on April 29th of that year.
"Grand Theft Auto V is perhaps the hottest anticipated third person game since, well, Grand Theft Auto IV and it looks set to smash the first moth sales of it predecessor," William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly sais.
Grand Theft Auto V is released on September 17th on Xbox 360 and PS3.

The bellicose phrase “console wars” has been used since at least the 1990s for the competition between manufacturers of videogame machines. Right now, however, the warfare is looking unusually asymmetrical. I write this five months before the release of PS4 and Xbox One, and I don’t remember there ever having been such a consensus as to the winner before launch. Sony has better specs. Developers, given a system architecture that wasn’t designed as an ingenuity test by some alien civilisation, have fallen in love with Sony all over again. And the PS4 looks cooler: those snazzily angled slabs shout ‘black ice sandwich of pure head-melting technology’.All that, plus the PS4 will be cheaper. If this is a war, though, the model is not a years-long face off in the trenches, but instead Germany’s mechanised penetration of the Maginot Line, resulting in the rapid collapse of France’s defences.Microsoft does have the USP of its HDMI input. My co-op shooter comrade-in-arms announced sarcastically that he was going to buy an Xbox One just so that he could plug his PS4 into it, and play only PS4 games through the Xbox interface. I’m not quite sure how this would stick it to The Man – after all, Microsoft would still get one more sale out of it – although if a console was capable of feeling humiliation, an Xbone used exclusively in this way would probably want the ground to open up and swallow it up.I don’t want to harsh poor Microsoft’s buzz too much, though. It had a tough job to do, even before it had to perform that humiliating climbdown over the suspicious requirement for the console to phone home every day (I hope the PRISM guys at the NSA aren’t too angry with them now) and those onerous plans for game DRM (which always means Digital Restrictions Management) – a climbdown that will forever be known, thanks to the insta-wit of the Internet hivemind, as the Xbox 180.They even had a difficult job with the console’s name. The Xbox 360 had to be called that rather than Xbox 2 because it was going up against PlayStation 3, and 3 (as Nigel Tufnel from This Is Spinal Tap might say) is obviously one more than 2. Xbox 720 just wouldn’t have made any sense. But Xbox One? It sounds as though they are trying to reboot the Xbox brand. Just like you have to reboot your Xbox 360 when it crashes. And going all out with the ‘own the living room’ approach is brave, even if the way they are going about it is stupid. People are already accustomed to the interface and EPG of their current box from Freeview or Sky. No one wants to have to learn how to watch TV all over again – unless the payoff will be lots of extra new channels of reality TV sexual frottage and cooking shows teaching you how to prepare the latest fashionable snack, roasted guinea pig.

PCSX2 SVN r5715 is compiled. PCSX2 is an open source PlayStation 2 (PS2) emulator for the Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems. With the most recent versions, many PS2 games are playable (although speed limitations have made play-to-completion tests for many games impractical), and several games are claimed to have full functionality.
PCSX2 SVN Changelog:
r5715
gsdx ogl: Test the ARB_shader_subroutine GL4.0 extension
The idea was to replace shader program swith by pointer function calls inside
shaders. At least parameters that are often changed between draw call. So far
I only ported atst and colclip. Unfortunately code is "slower" (on GSdx standalone).
For the moment keep the code but disabled.
If I understand well the validation of program is done in the "driver thread"
but the additional call are done in the overloaded MTGS thread. Apitrace
profiling shows faster GPU draw calls. Another possibility is that the driver still
need to validate the draw call because of others state change.
Here some stats on colin3 (90 frames):
without subroutine: UseProgram 125246
with subroutine: UseProgram 2906, subroutine 125945 => 3605 extra calls overhead (not
all parameters are ported to subroutine)
