Thedevelopers at Digital Dreams don't hold degrees in mathematics or business, nor are they big statistics nerds, but their first Vita game, Metrico, takes place entirely on a landscape of bar graphs, pie charts, percentages and angles. If anything, CEO Thijmen Bink and Lead Designer Gene Nellen resemble the character jumping around the numerical landscape – a man in a hoodie.
Well, it's the silhouette of a man in a hoodie: Metrico is a clean, crisp platformer in a minimalistic art style, with 3D objects shaded in flat, friendly blues, pinks and grays. It's intended to draw focus on the character's movements and how his actions impact the environment. Jump and the platform in front of him may rise with each leap. Walk back and forth and another platform might shrink, making it possible to jump on top and continue.
Bink and Nellen want players to notice how often they perform certain actions, such as walking to the left or hopping up and down, and the shifting graphs visualize these motions in ways that can't be ignored, since at times an errant leap can make a section impossible to complete.

Fans have wanted a follow-up to Mirror's Edge since the original gamehit shelves in 2008. Why then has it taken more than four years for that follow-up, which was constantly teased and hinted at, to be officially announced? According to Patrick Bach, executive producer at developer DICE, it's because the studio didn't have a strong enough pitch to sell to parent company and publisher EA.
In an interview with VideoGamer.com, Bach said that DICE didn't pitch theMirror's Edge reboot - often referred to as Mirror's Edge 2 despite not being a sequel - until they were happy with it. "... I think we are the bad cop in most cases when it comes to scrutinizing ideas and IPs and features, or whatever it might be," Bach said. "We would not try to pitch something that we didn't believe in, and that takes time."
Bach also spoke well of EA and its treatment of IPs like Mirror's Edge. "... in general, EA is very positive about us, like [asking us], 'What do you want?', instead of someone telling you, 'Build this, do that'."
The Mirror's Edge reboot is slated for both next-gen consoles, as well as PC, and will release "when it's ready."

In addition to the new characters, stages, and modes, Tecmo has announced that Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate will update its Grade Point system, add a new Character Points system, an online two vs. two tag mode, and have 231 costumes to choose from when the game launches on September 3 for Xbox 360 and PS3.
Character Points will let you know how good an opponent is with the fighter they've selected, as well as their world ranking. Meanwhile, the four-player online tag mode will pit two teams of two players each against each other. Both winning players in an online tag match earn Grade Points, which count towards unlocking new costumes.
Sadly, we're relatively certain none of the costumes will be a thong bikini for the sexiest of DOA's fighters, Bass.

Reflex-based time trial and high score hybrid Switch Galaxy Ultra is signaling to merge into the PS4 and Vita lanes, an announcement following Sony's GDC presentation revealed. The announcement states that Switch Galaxy Ultra is a revamp of PlayStation Mobile's Switch Galaxy that will improve visuals and add a "host of new levels, lots more player ships to acquire and upgrade" and "more power-ups."
Unlike its visually-comparable, fallen racing counterpart, Wipeout,Switch Galaxy Ultra will task players with gathering as many points in as few seconds as possible by switching between fixed lanes. Gates, other drivers and occasional lasers of death fired from overhead aircrafts will stand between players and indisputable glory atop the leaderboards.
Switch Galaxy Ultra will have pre-defined tracks in a story mode, but players can also try to persevere on the Survival Mode's infinite track and shove their success in their friends' faces.

Joe Danger and Joe Danger 2 are in development for Vita.
The stunt racers are due to hit Sony's handheld next year, Hello Games managing director Sean Murray revealed in a post on the PS Blog.
Murray said: "One of the reasons we've fallen in love with PS Vita is its power. It's super, super important to us that our games run really smoothly. Like, 60 FPS smoothly. There's nothing like the super-slick movement and sense of responsiveness of a really well-made game. That screen just looks so lovely showing colourful, vibrant games too.
"Another big reason why Vita's perfect for Joe Danger is in its controls. On PS3, Joe Danger uses pretty much every button, stick and trigger for something, so all Vita's inputs, from its touchscreen and rear Touch Pad to its dual analogue sticks, are essential. We aiming for Joe on Vita to play at least as well as it does on PS3. We've got some surprises in store for our level editor too."
Joe Danger released on PS3 in 2010, Xbox 360 the following year, and on iOS devices in early 2013. It was followed by Joe Danger 2 for Xbox 360 and PS3 last year. Both games were made available on Steam in June.
In our Joe Danger Special Edition review, we said: "Dangerously addictive: a superb, polished, enjoyable stunt racer which is as deep as it is enjoyable."

Revolution Software is developing a Vita version of its new Kickstarter funded adventure, Broken Sword: The Serpent's Curse.
"The PS Vita is an ideal device for an adventure game - the combination of the front and rear touch screen, as well as the analog stick and shoulder buttons, gives us so much scope to create a really great user interface," said Revolution co-founder Charles Cecil.
ZoomThe Serpent's Curse was already confirmed for development on PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android.
The game hit Kickstarter in August 2012 when Revolution Software said that "the traditional publishing model" had prevented it from pursuing development. The fund was a success, ending at $771,560 - almost double the $400k target.
Here's the an official plot synopsis:
Broken Sword: The Serpent's Curse starts with intrepid lawyer, George Stobbart, and sassy journalist, Nico Collard, caught in the deadly robbery of a seemingly worthless painting. But we, the audience, also see a scene from the Second World War in which Spanish fascists storm a Catalan villa, killing the family, and seizing that same painting. As George and Nico are drawn into the murderous conspiracy, those around them claim that the painting is cursed by the Devil himself. George and Nico soon come to believe that they may just be right.

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida is a passionate man. He cares about games, he plays games, and it shows. When we ran into him atSony's Gamescom 2013 press briefing, he was sitting next to and casually chatting with indie game dev Rami Ismail -- one of the dozens of indie devs bringing a game to thePlayStation 4. He kicked off PlayStation's Gamescom show with a confident and persuasive argument for his employer's new console: a casual walkthrough of the dashboard, followed up by a demonstration of watching a friend's livestreaming game which he seamlessly jumped into.
He then grabbed a screenshot of the game in-action and posted it to Twitter directly from the console he was using on-stage. It was muted and powerful in terms of delivery; in so many words, Yoshida and Sony "showed," while Microsoft merely "told" (Redmond's equivalent demonstration was shown to press but not allowed to be filmed). We sat down for a lengthy interview with Yoshida -- commonly known as "Shu" in the game world -- to talk about not just his presentation at Gamescom, but also his affinity for the world of indies and gaming in general. "It's personal to me and many of us working at PlayStation," he said of his work with indies. "For many years, we've been big fans of working with small teams. They take chances. They come up with something unique, and sometimes it's very personal."
Given our love for Oculus Rift's virtual reality tech, we couldn't help but ask Shu once more how he felt about the system and what his love for it might mean for the PlayStation 4. Head below for the full interview, full of wide smiles and thoughtful commentary from one of gaming's most passionate individuals.

SCEA boss plays down the importance of PlayStation 4's price advantage
Sony Computer Entertainment
Sony Computer Entertainment is a Japanese videogame company specialising in a variety of areas in the...
playstation.com
Sony's Jack Tretton doesn't believe that the PlayStation 4's price will be decisive in the outcome of the next generation, arguing that there are more important factors at play in winning over the consumer.
Speaking to Bloomberg, the SCEA president claimed that the PS4's one million global pre-orders represent "just a fraction" of the actual demand for the console. However, while Tretton believes that its release in November this year will be the biggest launch in Sony Computer Entertainment's history, the $399/€399/£349 will not be the deciding factor in who emerges as the victor.
"Obviously you'd like your competitor at a higher price than a lower price, and I've lived on both sides of that spectrum," he said. "I think, ultimately, the gamer looks at 10-year product life-cycles, they look at the software offerings, they look at the value proposition. The lowest priced system isn't always successful."
The Xbox One will retail for $499/€499/£429, and the gulf between its prices and those of its rival is widely seen as the most significant competitive difference that remains following Microsoft's various policy amendments. Public perception of Xbox One has improved dramatically in recent weeks, and Gamescom has been largely positive for Microsoft: it detailed its policies around indie self-publishing, announced a deal that will see FIFA 14 bundled for free with Xbox One pre-orders, and the exclusive Titanfall looks likely to be the most admired game at the show - just as it was at E3.
Certainly, Sony is clear about where the battle-lines have been drawn, shifting its focus away from its home territory - where PlayStation platforms have traditionally launched first - and towards Xbox strongholds in North America and Europe.
"[PlayStation 4's launch in] Japan is to be determined," Tretton said. "It's obviously a really important market for us - it's the home market - but the battle for next generation hearts and minds is being waged in the west right now.
"Historically, we've launched in japan first, so this is a pretty big change for us, but it's indicative of where gaming has the most heat right now."

Sony's decision to release GT6 on PS3 rather than the shiny next-generation PS4 caused some confusion, but the racing simulator could find its way onto the new console.
Kazunori Yamauchi, CEO of Gran Turismo developer Polyphony Digital revealed during a Gamescom panel session that the studio is considering bringing the PS3 title to PS4 – but it might evolve into a sequel.
According to Joystiq, Yamauchi believes a PS4 port for GT6 would more than likely be released as Gran Turismo 7. He also said he wasn't sure if the "vision" of GT6 would carry over to its hypothetical (but no doubt inevitable) follow-up.
Gran Turismo 6 was announced for PS3 earlier this year. At Sony's Gamescom press conference on Tuesday, it was given a release date of December 6th.
It has previously been hinted that the racing game could be developed for PlayStation 4 as well.

August 23rd, 2013, 01:50 Posted By: wraggster
During Sony's Gamescom press keynote, president Andrew House revealed a program that would allow consumers to upgrade from select PS3 titles to their PS4 counterparts for a "significantly discounted price." UK managing director Fergal Gara told Digital Spy that the pricing will be dictated by publishers.
"What will happen is, the PS4 digital file will be made available on the PlayStation Store - as it would be anyway - at launch, and the PS3 discs will be sold through retail. What the consumer can then do, for a premium to be defined by the publisher, is access the PS4 digital game and then provided they still have the PS3 disc, they will be able to play the PS4 version when they decide to buy the next gen."
Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Watch Dogs and Battlefield 4 are the first games eligible for this promotion. GameStop and Amazon both announced they will offer similar upgrade options for Xbox 360 to Xbox One games, though nothing has been announced from either retailer regarding PS3 to PS4 upgrades.

Sony Is anticipating a PS4 sell-out at launch, with PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara claiming the company's struggling to satisfy pre-orders.
On Tuesday, when Sony announced a PS4 release date of November 15 in the US and November 29 in Europe, the company said more than one million PS4 pre-orders had been placed worldwide.
And Gara told OPM the figure is "higher than we've ever seen in 20 years".
"The problem with pre-orders, which is a good problem to have, is that they're very, very high," he said.
"As an ex retailer myself I understand this at least as well as anyone else: we need to help retailers manage the expectations of their customers and not let them down. And that is why we advise them that, from August the 5th, they should not guarantee anyone they will get their unit on day one".
"We are going to be looking at a sell-out situation and chasing demand, it's a problem, it's kind of a good problem to have, but it is a problem and we're trying to manage that as responsibly as we possibly can."
PS4 will be available in 32 countries this holiday, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said on Tuesday.

Just in case you missed it during Sony's Gamescom 2013 presentation (and our live coverage), the company kicked things off in a fresh way, letting the PlayStation 4 experience do all of the talking. No words were necessary as Mr. @yosp himself, SCE prez Shuhei Yoshida, casually sat in a chair flipping through the new UI and loading up a quick game of Killzone Shadow Fall. Whether you have loved or loved to hate the PS3's XMB, this nearly three minute-long demo should fill in many blanks about what life will be like if you pick up one of Sony's $399 boxes on or about November 15th. Check out the video embedded after the break plus a list of launch window games while you weigh the pros and cons of pre-ordering.

Patience, Team Ico fans – Sony hasn’t yet abandoned plans to release much-delayed PS3 title The Last Guardian.
In fact, SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has told CVG that the platform holder is waiting for the right time to “re-announce” the game, presumably as a PS4 title.
"Yeah we are still making it,” he insisted. “So we are still waiting for the right time to announce it. To re-announce it. So, we have decided not to discuss this yet."
The last communication about the game, which was first announced in 2009, was a pair of mixed messages in June.
SCEA boss Jack Tretton said that “The Last Guardian is certainly not going away but it is on hiatus right now" only for Yoshida to correct him, stating that "The game is in active development – nothing has changed”.

FIFA 14 on Vita will not feature any of the gameplay improvements found in many of the game’s other versions.
"There will be a Vita version, and it'll be the same great gameplay," EA Sports' David Rutter told Eurogamer. "It's the same great gameplay and new kits."
Although it has not been confirmed, the same can also be presumed of both the PS2 and Wii releases, the latter of which has been criticised before for failing to implement new modes.
EA presumably adopts the development policy because the comparatively lower sales of the game on Vita and Wii do not warrant the game’s redevelopment on those platforms.
It’s a different story on consoles and PC, of course.
The PS3, Xbox 360 and PC versions of the games will feature a host of new features but will be based on the existing game engine. The PS4 and Xbox One releases, meanwhile, are built from the ground-up using EA’s new Ignite game engine.

The president of SCE Worldwide Studios has perhaps for the first time admitted that question marks hang over the long-term future of PlayStation Vita.
The console has failed the replicate the (criminally under-reported) success of its predecessor and continues to sell in low numbers across most key territories.
However, speaking to CVG Shuhei Yoshida has admitted the he “thinks” the machine still has a future in the handheld market.
"Yeah I think we can still pursue it, and I don't think we have to make that decision now,” he stated.
"Also, the distinction between the portables and mobile is [blurring], because there are all kinds of hybrids, different form factors and operating systems can still be conceived, in terms of how we characterise portable and mobile. We still like PS Vita and we know people who buy it really like it."
That doesn’t sound like rock-solid backing, does it? Although it should be noted that Yoshida is that rare breed of exec who often chooses to actually answer the questions put to him rather than avoid issues with marketing sound-bites.
As CVG points out, Sony only expects combined PSP and Vita sales of 5m units in the current financial year. That’s down from the 7m sales it achieved in the previous fiscal term, and that itself was significantly short of the 16m sales it had previously predicted.
The machines managed only 600k sales in Sony’s most recent quarter.

Digital curiosity Rain has been dated for PS3.
Sony says the game will arrive on PSN on October 2nd with a European price of €12.99. The game’s up for pre-order right now.
Those who do drop money on it early will get a few bonuses – a dynamic theme, a static theme, five hard-drawn avatars and a delightfully named “Musical Montage”.

Releasing games on iOS is like playing the lottery, says Shahid Ahmad
More developers make more money on average on Vita than they do on mobile, Sony claims.
SCEE senior business development manager Shahid Ahmad made the bold claim to Polygon, and stated releasing on the portable console was a great investment for developers looking to build a business.
He also likened putting a game on the iOS App Store to playing the lottery, given the problems with discoverability in the face of so many competing titles.
"More developers make more money on average on Vita than they do on mobile," said Ahmad.
"When people buy a Vita, they want to purchase games. I tell developers, if you're trying to build a business, then building your game and bringing it to Vita is a great investment.

Helldivers, the next title from Magicka developer Arrowhead Game Studios, has added the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita to its landing schedule. The top-down shooter was first shown on the PlayStation 4 during Sony's Gamescom press conference,
"As part of the elite unit called the Helldivers, you choose your deployment zone and dive into battle on procedurally-generated battlefields," Arrowhead boss Johan Pilestedt said in a new PlayStation Blog post.
Helldivers features "Cross-Play and Cross-Save" between the PS4, PS3, and PS Vita versions, allowing a mixture of up-to four players across all platforms either locally or online. Whether the game is Cross-Buy as well, however, is unclear.
Arrowhead Game Studios says it is partnering with Sony Computer Entertainment and Foster City Studios - a development squad responsible for overseeing first-party development at Sony - to bring Helldivers to PlayStation.

Consoles don't ever really come back from the dead, they just usually become niche. But the PlayStation Vita, Sony's redheaded portable stepchild, is currently having its Lazarus moment more than a year after release; a solid second chance at relevance. It's a resurrection owed entirely to the indie community, a fact Sony's more than happy to acknowledge -- just look at the company's recent marketing and Gamescom presserfor proof. But before we talk Vita 2.0 and the promising future ahead, let's rewind a bit to examine the missteps that almost pushed Sony's powerhouse portable off a cliff.

Handheld maker pushing system as an attractive alternative to iOS and Android development
Sony
With its growing catalog of indie games, PS4 compatibility, and just-announced price cut, Sony is trying to breathe new life into the PS Vita. Part of that effort also includes convincing creators to work on the platform, something Sony reps and Vita developers discussed recently with Polygon.
In the piece, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe senior business development manager Shahid Ahmad pushed the Vita as an alternative to the mobile and tablet markets, suggesting that the handheld's user base is more engaged and willing to spend money on games than their counterparts on other platforms.
"More developers make more money on average on Vita than they do on mobile," Ahmad said. "When people buy a Vita, they want to purchase games. I tell developers, if you're trying to build a business, then building your game and bringing it to Vita is a great investment. If you want to play the lottery, then putting a game on iOS is more like that. You're scratching that and hoping you get discovered, hoping that a lot of people talk about you. Whereas Vita, every week when there's content coming out, people buzz about it and it spreads like wildfire, because everyone's firing that console up every day to look at the content and talk about it."
The sentiment was supported by Ripstone co-founder Phil Gaskell, who has released a number of multi-platform titles that showed favorable results on Vita.
"Our Pure Chess title has sold more units on PS Vita than on PS3," Gaskell said. "Our line drawing game Men's Room Mayhem sold more units on PS Vita in its first month than on iOS and Android combined. It seems like a perfectly good platform to us, and we're continuing to support it in the future."
Sony is also expecting the Vita's PS4 features to spark interest in the system. Sony Computer Entertainment America VP of publisher and developer relations Adam Boyes stressed the importance of Remote Play, which will let players play some PS4 games using the Vita.
"We've said internally that it's going to be the greatest peripheral ever made for a console," Boyes said. "I can't wait to have my PS4 in my living room and being able to play Watch Dogs in my bedroom while my PS4 is downstairs. That's going to generate more interest in the platform in general."
