Bungie wants to kickstart a new, more social era of online play in Destiny through what the Seattle studio calls ‘sloping the floor’ internally. The term is shorthand for how Bungie will gently encourage Destiny’s players to collaborate by rewarding positive interactions. In-game gestures are mapped to the D-pad: Up to wave, Down to dance, Left to salute, Right to point – and they reflect Bungie’s desire to change the tone of online play for the better – to “make sure the social experience is one where if the players aren’t co-operating or communicating effectively it doesn’t ruin anyone’s experience,” says Bungie technical director Chris Butcher.“If you look back at online multiplayer gaming for the last ten years I think the dominant thread has been adolescent males shooting each other in the face and squatting on each other’s corpses,” he continues. “And that emerges from design decisions which… some of which were intentional, some of which were not, but the community gets attracted towards that, and that is popular to a lot of other people and so it kind of tends to exclude others.”Bungie appreciates that some players might find sport in trying to disrupt play, but Butcher says that Destiny’s public events and co-op is designed so that deliberate – or even accidental – sedition won’t spoil the game for everyone.“I don’t think you can ever design toxic behaviour out, you can’t ever stop players from being toxic but what you can do is prevent them being able to ruin other players’ experiences,” adds Butcher. “You give people these tools that encourage them to interact positively with each other and then if someone is interacting negatively with you, well, they can’t ruin your experience.”You can read more about Destiny in Edge 257. On the site, we’ve also recently reported on how Paul McCartney is approaching work on the Destiny soundtrack, what Bungie learned from making Halo and how it fed into the creation of Destiny plus what the forthcoming shooter does better than Borderlands.

Evolution able to use analytics to alter priority game elements on the fly
PS4 developers will be able to control how their games are downloaded and prioritise the most popular parts, says Evolution Studios group technical director Scott Kirkland.
Speaking to The Guardian, Kirkland said developers are able to modify how the digital version of the title is downloaded, based on analytics. This can help ensure the most-played features are readily playable while the rest of the game downloads in the background.
He explained this was useful for its upcoming social racing title DriveClub, as it could see if a large number of users were playing a game in an unexpected way, or if a particular track had proved particularly popular amongst players.
"If we recognise that a majority of people take a particular path through the game that we didn't anticipate, we could dynamically modify the default order that the digital version of the game gets pulled down in – and actually, that same technique could apply to how the data is pulled off the Blu-ray as well,” said Kirkland.
“We can continue to make the experience better for the player."

Good news for fans of grind-tastic dungeon crawler / strategy RPG hybrids:Rainbow Skies is headed to the PlayStation 3 and Vita in 2014. A sequel of sorts to last year's Rainbow Moon, Rainbow Skies promises "countless hours" of content and features new combination attacks and a monster taming system. The game is coming exclusively to PSN and will feature cross-save support, allowing players to begin a game on PS3 and continue it on Vita, or vice versa. Whether the game will be cross-buy is still being determined, publisher Eastasiasoft tells us.
Eastasiasoft also tells us that Rainbow Moon will arrive on Vita later this year. More details will arrive "in the coming weeks." We found Rainbow Moon to be a passable RPG, though its dependence on unrewarding grinding was disappointing.

Sony has confirmed no new characters or stages will be released for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. The characters and environments that have already been released so far represent the full content for the game, a Sony Santa Monica representative wrote on the PlayStation forum. However, Sony plans to release a balance patch for the brawler, which is still in the early stages of research and development. At the earliest this will be released later this autumn. And a third set of costumes will be released for Dante, Raiden, Heihachi and Big Daddy that were only exclusively available as pre-order bonuses in the US. These will be released on PlayStation Network as a free download to everyone on 27th August.Zeus and Isaac's third costumes will also be made available free. These will go live alongside the balance patch.Elsewhere, Sony Santa Monica has reset the overall leaderboards and will continue to do this on a monthly basis. In February Sony announced it had ended its relationship with SuperBot Entertainment, the developer it created to make PlaySation All-Stars Battle Royale. The news came after layoffs at the developer and poor sales of the game."On a personal note, we want thank everyone for their dedication to the game," Sony Santa Monica said."There have been a lot of challenges on the development side, and for the players as well, but it's this kind of passion from players that inspires us to try and move forward, even during difficult times."

Sony is exploring the possibility of letting Planetside 2 players transfer their character between the PlayStation 4 and PC versions. While Planetside 2 will not feature cross-platform play, the developers at Sony Online Entertainment are trying to work out how the two versions of the free-to-play shooter can link up.In an interview with Eurogamer at the SOE Live event in Las Vegas, Matt Higby, creative director of Planetside 2, said all PC content patches will appear on the PS4, but with a slight delay for approval - and it's this delay that means cross-platform play isn't possible."Because of the update cadence, and the additional steps you have to go through to be able to release an update on the PlayStation network, we're not going to be able to keep our servers in sync, so you won't be able to just play with the same people," Higby explained."They might be a week behind in terms of patching, or a day behind or whatever it ends up being, and we can't really have that."But we're also talking about having character portability, so a PC character, you could transfer it to PlayStation 4, and then back. The character format's the same on both, it's just purely a matter of the server updates."

A trio of Sony executives will reportedly deliver a PS4keynote at next month's Tokyo Game Show 2013.
According to Game Jouhou (via Gematsu), the presentation is tentatively titled 'The World PlayStation 4 Creates'. We've checked in with Sony for any further details.
Taking place on September 19, the first business day of TGS, the keynote session will be hosted by Sony Computer Entertainment president and group CEO Andrew House, senior vice president Masayasu Ito, and Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida.
Tokyo Game Show runs from September 19 to 22. Capcom said last week that it intends to showcase new PS4 online game Deep Down at TGS.
Sony has confirmed a "holiday 2013" PS4 release date in Europe and the US and a PS4 price of £349 / €399 / $399. First party launch titles will include Killzone Shadow Fall, DriveClub and Knack.
Increased research and development expenses related to PS4 were a key driver of the significant operating loss incurred by the PlayStation division during Sony's first financial quarter, the company told investors last week.
However, the company also reiterated that its adoption of third party technology and production capabilities for PS4 mean it won't take the big hit it suffered launching the console's predecessor.

PS4 developers can adjust what parts of their games are downloaded by consumers first, meaning that more in-demand content can be prioritised.
The new option for consumers is the result of better analytical feedback given to developers, along with the PS4's capability to break vast game downloads into smaller playable chunks. Studios can discover what parts of a game are the most popular and adjust game downloads so that the most highly sought content comes first.

In holiday 2011, while fans of both the Call of Duty and Battlefield series were gearing up for virtual war, the publishers behind each megafranchise were gearing up for a different type of virtual war. With the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Activision's in-game social network -- dubbed "Call of Duty Elite" -- went live. Just prior, alongside the launch of competing title Battlefield 3, EA introduced its "Battlelog" system. And thus began a parallel virtual war for fans' loyalty, battled via user numbers and engagement metrics. It's a pretty boring war, but its armaments are the games many of us know and love.
The first-person-shooter social network war continues to this day (in silence, of course), with EA recently stepping up its rhetoric surrounding this October's entry, Battlefield 4. Since E3, where some new Battlelog features were shown for the first time during EA's presser, the company's released its first big Battlelog marketing video (seen below). But we wanted more details about what the first next-gen version of Battlelog will look like, and what EA's DICE studio has been able to accomplish with new hardware.

Elements of the multiplayer component of The Last of Us were censored in the European release, it has been discovered.
Eurogamer reports that the European version lacks some of the gore found in the US release – specifically, weapons that lead to exploding heads have been calmed to avoid the decapitation.
There are a few other dismemberment events that have been cut, too.
The single player game seems to be unaffected by the cuts.
The changes have been confirmed on the forums of developer Naughty Dog, which cited different regulations in different countries for the decision. A separate report says that the changes were made so as to avoid the possible wrath of the famously strict German USK ratings board.
It’s also alleged that this is not the first time this has happened – the UK releases of both God of War: Ascension and Twisted Metal were also said to be missing elements that were cut for the German release.
The reason, the report says, is that SCEE releases the same game across all of Europe, so changes made for one territory will be reflected in all others.
