[Kevin] just finished a project for someone who lives in his apartment complex. This resident loves the game Pop ‘n Music – a Guitar Hero sort of game for the original Playstation and PS2 that uses nine colored buttons instead of five buttons along a fingerboard. His original idea was to wire up a few arcade buttons to a Playstation controller but this plan fell through, forcing [Kevin] to figure out the PSX bus all by his lonesome.
The initial code began with simply bit-banging the PSX controller interface with an AVR. This had a few problems, namely speed, forcing [Kevin] to move onto assembly programming to squeeze every last bit of performance out of a microcontroller.
The assembly route failed as well, dropping some transactions Looking at the problem again, [Kevin] realized the PSX controller bus looked a little like an SPI bus. There were a few changes required – reversing the order of the bits, and using the MISO line to drive a transistor – but this method worked almost perfectly on the first try.
Now, [Kevin]‘s building mate has a custom Playstation controller for his favorite game. Of course all the code is up on github for all your PSX controller emulation needs, but be sure to check out from someone who desperately needs a piano.

Sony is claiming a record number of pre-orders for the upcoming PS4.
Videogamer reports that SCE UK boss Fergal Gara says that pre-orders for the machine “are tracking way over and above and beyond the pre-order number at launch day of the PS2 and PS3”.
Specific numbers weren’t issued, but Gara did confirm that the total currently stands at over 1m units.
"We're not disclosing the exact number [of PS4 units] that we'll have on day one," Gara stated. "Clearly we're working hard to satisfy a lot of countries. We mentioned 32 countries last night.
"The one comment I'll make about the pre-order number is first of all, it's greater than a million, and secondly, the UK represents a very healthy slug of that. We're undeniably seeing a sea change.
"I'm very, very pleased with it, so we will be looking at sell outs in areas. We're doing everything we can to secure every last unit ... so we an do out very best to meet the demand as it stands for day one and clearly chasing there after.
"It's a little bit of a problem, but it's good problem to have."
PS4 launches in the UK on November 29th.

After a series of turnarounds and with FIFA and Call Of Duty in its corner, following Microsoft was a more difficult task for Sony at Gamescom than at E3. All PlayStation had to do was turn up and collect the spoils back in June, but here, with significantly revised competition and the temperature rising ever higher as we lead into launch, it felt like Sony needed to remind us exactly why it has gathered so much goodwill with its new console. It succeeded, with what seemed like an unending list of new indie games, some promising new partnerships, a neat demo of Vita’s Remote Play capabilities, price cuts for Vita and PS3, and a PS4 release date. It even found time for a dig at Microsoft’s string of reversals and compromises. By the conclusion of Sony’s comprehensive press showcase, the crowd almost seemed weary from the need to applaud each and every new announcement. It began slowly. New Killzone Shadow Fall footage was, well, shooty, and the video that led into the news of Gran Turismo 6’s release date (December 6 globally) was soundtracked by the very worst heavy metal dirge imaginable.News of free to play PS3 title LittleBigPlanet Hub livened up the proceedings, and Sony’s GTA V / PS3 bundle – guaranteed to be a strong seller – followed. Then it was onto Sony’s Vita rescue plan: a price cut to €199 / $199 plus new versions Football Manager and Borderlands 2 will help, as will Media Molecule’s Tearaway, which got an extended, appreciative round of applause. The meat of this conference, however, was a love letter to indie developers. Ovosonico’s Murasaki Baby set the tone here – where Xbox One has big-name, guns-and-football blockbusters, PS4 had a ludicrous number of smaller, much more interesting games. Big Fest followed, a free to play game which allows players to build a fantasy music festival featuring real-world unsigned bands.

Wasteland Kings, the next game from Ridiculous Fishing developer Vlambeer, is coming to PS4 and Vita next year, Sony's Shahid Ahmad announced during the company's Gamescom press event today.
Wasteland Kings is an action roguelike that tells the sordid stories of mutants fighting to control the Wasteland throne, inspired by 60s to 80s sci-fi novels. Its characters gather radioactive waste to evolve (or devolve, depending on your perspective) and gain new abilities, and it allows players to explore unique approaches to numerous hostile situations. Vlambeer co-founder Rami Ismailtold Joystiq that Wasteland Kings combines aspects from all of its major games:Luftrausers, Super Crate Box and Ridiculous Fishing.
"Wasteland Kings feels like the way I think about Vlambeer," Ismail said. "A happy place where weird shit happens all the time."
Vlambeer will launch Wasteland Kings on Steam Early Access after Gamescom, complete with a livestream of the game's development.

Tequila Works (Deadlight) is abandoning dreary silhouettes to venture out into a cel-shaded island in Rime for the PS4, Sony announced at their Gamescom press conference today.
VP of Sony Worldwide Studios Michael Denny explained that Rime is an open-world adventure focused on exploring the ruins of an ancient civilization. The trailer showed a figure exploring grassy hills amongst wildlife and clambering across portions of a broken bridge to scale a towering staircase.

During Sony's Gamescom briefing, Andrew House announced that PS3 players who purchase select software will have the ability to upgrade to the PlayStation 4 version for a "significantly discounted price."
House confirmed a number of games will be available for the "limited time" offer, including Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Watch Dogsand Battlefield 4. Activision, Ubisoft, EA and Warner Bros. were noted as publishers partnering with Sony on the upgrade initiative. It's unclear if the program will be available worldwide.
Unlike similar retailer offers revealed for Xbox One software earlier this week, Sony's plan is to offer the discounted games through its own digital storefront.
PlayStation 4 launches in North America on November 15 and in Europe on November 29.

Heads up, PS3 and Vita owners: Sony announced that the PlayStation Network will be undergoing maintenance this Thursday, August 22, closing off access to the PlayStation Store and other online features. The outage will begin at around 12:00 Noon PT (1:00PM MT / 2:00PM CT / 3:00PM ET) and will wrap up at approximately 6:30PM PT (7:30PM MT / 8:30PM CT / 9:30PM ET).
The PlayStation Store will roll out an update later tonight, giving players a couple of days to queue up their downloads for the debuting Divekick and this week's new batch of PlayStation Plus freebies. It may help to think of Thursday's outage as an opportunity to hone both your jumping and your kicking skills in Divekick's single-player mode.

Players that own Call of Duty: Ghosts on PS3 will be able to purchase the PS4 version for $10, €10 or £10 for a limited time, Activision announced today. This follows Sony's announcement last night that PS4 games will be offered at a "significantly discounted" price – also for a limited time – to those who already own the PS3 version. Sony didn't mention a specific price at the time, but the $10 point lines up with retailer next-gen upgrades.
Ghosts, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Watch Dogs and Battlefield 4 – and specifically the publishers Activision, Ubisoft, EA and Warner Bros. – will participate in the PS3-PS4 upgrade program.
Player stats from Ghosts will transfer from PS3 to PS4, Activision previously announced.

FuturLab has announced a sequel to its brilliant shoot-'em-up Velocity. The new game's called Velocity 2X, and it's headed to PS Vita and PlayStation 4 next year. The first Velocity saw you zooming around fast-scrolling sci-fi mazes, teleporting past hurdles as you stuck it to the alien menace. The sequel offers more of the same but also allows you to get out of your ship at specific sections and dash about on foot.New lighting effects combine beautifully with the colour scheme.
This is a risky addition to such a gloriously compact game, but I suspect the team has pulled it off. I had a chance to play Velocity 2X last week, and while I'm not yet allowed to describe how the on-foot stuff plays out, I can say that it works beautifully. Trailer below! Oh, and Velocty 2X will be playable at the Eurogamer Expo. I might go to that.

Retro shooter Gravity Crash is being updated for release on Vita.Developer Just Add Water has "remixed and amped up" the PlayStation 3 version of Gravity Crash, which released four years ago, for Vita and renamed it Gravity Crash Ultra. The game uses the Vita's twin-stick controls, its OLED display with the full 960x544 native resolution, and, like the PS3 version, outputs at 60 frames per second. There are 42 levels, seven of which are new, and, exclusive to the Vita version, an expanded ship selection, which JAW said will give beginners a fighting chance. Also, expect tweaked weapons and a new version of the soundtrack from CoLDSTORAGE. It also features "considerably improved rendering and visual effects", JAW said."It's been interesting returning to this title, we've been able to make changes and improvements where appropriate," said Just Add Water boss Stewart Gilray."But most of all, it's been a blast bringing it to the Vita."There's cross-compatibility between the Vita and PS3 versions, so you can share user-generated levels across platforms. On Vita, you can use the touchscreen to create new levels.

"For the last year, Gearbox Software, 2K, and Sony have been inundated with emails, tweets, forum posts and more from passionate gamers across the world pleading for a PS Vita version of Borderlands 2," explained Gearbox Software's Adam Fletcher.
According to Fletcher, the PS Vita version of Borderlands 2 will be developed by Iron Galaxies, the studio which most recently released indie fighting game Divekick.
"You spoke, we listened, and with the wonderful collaboration between 2K, Sony and the team at Iron Galaxy Studios - makers of indie fighting game Divekick - we can finally make Borderlands 2 on PS Vita a reality!"
"The PS Vita gives Borderlands 2 fans the ability to play the game anywhere they want, complete with of all the unique benefits of the Vita, and will truly bring the four-player cooperative experience to the palms of your hands. A new era of portable shoot-and-loot awaits!"
"For those of you new to the critically acclaimed shooting-and-looting mayhem of Borderlands 2, which won more than 55 editorial awards in 2012, you'll be picking from four uniquely-skilled Vault Hunters - Axton the Commando, Maya the Siren, Salvador the Gunzerker and Zer0 the Assassin - and then gunzerking your way through the world of Pandora in an attempt to defeat the corrupt Hyperion Corporation, led by the notorious Handsome Jack."
Fez for PS Vita, meanwhile, is being developed by Barcelona-based Blit Software, which is also the studio behind the PS3 and PS Vita versions of Spelunky.
The platform holder also used the event to announce a Vita price cut. Starting tomorrow, Wednesday August 21, the portable will retail for €199 in Europe and $199 in North America. Sony also promised a "significant reduction" to the price of Vita memory cards.

Previously announced for PC, Mac and Linux, the Classic component of Football Manager 2014will be playable across home computers and Sony's handheld thanks to the title's cloud save features.
Football Manager Classic is a streamlined mode that was added to last year's FM 2013 on PC and Mac, Sports Interactive studio director Miles Jacobson explained in a post on the PlayStation Blog.
"It has all you'd expect from FM - our huge database of players researched by a team of over 1,500 scouts around the world, a 3D match engine showing the action, a full tactics module, realistic transfers, AI that makes both players and managers act as you'd expect them to in the real world, and dozens of playable leagues, with hundreds of manageable clubs from all over the world, but has been streamlined for a faster playing experience."
Football Manager Classic 2014 for Vita will be published by Sega and will be available as both a physical release and a digital download. Sports Interactive says more information, including a release date, is "coming soon".

The PS Vita will now retail for $269.95 in Australia for the 3G and Wi-Fi model, Sony Australia has confirmed.
The news follows the announcement of similar price cuts for Europe and North America at the Gamescom convention in Cologne.
The price cut is effective as of September 2, and will be complimented with a similar cut to the 12 GB PS3 model, which will now retail for $269.95.
Vita memory cards have been reduced also: a 4 GB card is $19.95, a 8 GB $26.95, 16 GB is $46.95, while 32 GB is $84.95.
Sony also announced today that both Borderlands 2 and Fez will release for PS Vita, though no specific dates were offered. Mojang also confirmed Minecraft will reach the portable device some time in 2014.
The cut follows admissions earlier this month by a Sony executive that the Vita has underperformed at retail.
Sony also confirmed at Gamescom that the PlayStation 4 will launch on November 29 in Australia and New Zealand.

Sony has outlined several new initiatives for its PlayStation Plus service, including extra cloud storage and new trial periods for PlayStation 4 owners.
PS Plus subscribers will receive 3 GB of cloud storage when using PS4, compared to the 2 GB offered on PS Vita and PS3.
Meanwhile, users can take advantage of a 14 day trial period for PS Plus, which will allow access to the Instant Game Collection, online play, and cloud storage. Additionally, those who subscribe to PS Plus for a year before September 20 will receive an additional 90 days access to their account.
The company also confirmed Super Stardust "spiritual successor" Resogun will be free to all PS Plus subscribers at launch, in addition to the previously confirmed Driveclub.
Sony confirmed at E3 2013 that PS Plus will be required in order to access online multiplayer. This is in contrast with the PS3, which offers free access to multiplayer.
A game business analyst has predicted that moving multiplayer behind a paywall will deliver profits of up to $1.2 billion per year for Sony.
A yearly subscription to PS Plus costs $69.95 in Australia, £39.99 in the UK, €49.99 in Europe and $49.95 in the US.

August 21st, 2013, 10:18 Posted By: wraggster
Housemarque, the team behind the Stardust series, has officially announced the PS4 exclusive Resogun.
Mikael Haveri of Housemarque made the announcement on thePlayStation Blog, explaining that it adds a twist to the shooter genre while remaining true as a "spiritual successor" to the Stardust series.
"[Resogun] doesn't shy away from remixing ideas and influences of classic arcade titles such as Defender, Data Storm, or Japanese shmups like DoDonPachi and Death Smiles."
Described as an intense, fast-paced shooter, Resogun is said to represent all of Housemarque's expertise. "The cylindrical gameplay is closer to old school 2D shooters, and one interesting side effect of that is that the world has gravity now," Haveri said. "You actually expect things to fall down, there are ground enemies... these elements completely change the playfield compared to the Stardust series."
Haveri promises that Resogun will not be a traditional twin-stick shooter. Power-ups and shields can be unlocked to add strategy to the game, and co-op multiplayer will feature.
Resogun is "the perfect example of 'easy to pick up but hard to master,'" Haveri said. "We are deeply convinced it will bring back memories of the good old arcade-destroying days."
Resogun was first confirmed as a Stardust spiritual successor earlier this year, when it was also revealed Housemarque would be working on two PS4 exclusives.
Sony confirmed at Gamescom that the PS4 will launch November 15 in the US, and November 29 in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

I share, you share, we all share video game video -- or, at least, that's the promise of the rapidly encroaching next generation of consoles. With Twitch now officially joiningSony's PS4 as an additional livestreaming partner, gamers will have one more option (the other being Ustream) to broadcast gameplay when they press that Share button. The announcement, made at this year's Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, positions Twitch advantageously on both Sony and Microsoft's warring black boxes as an inbuilt app, although the similarities may end there. As Matthew DiPietro, Twitch's VP of Marketing, explained to us, "The product itself and the feature set that will actually be available on both of the consoles is still a little bit up in the air because they're actively being produced right now... but the key sort of feature set is clear." So crucial elements like video broadcast and viewing, picture-in-picture and audio capture -- all basic functions currently enjoyed by the service's 600,000-strong user base -- will be de facto at launch.
But does that mean Day One or when the app launches? "Most likely for PS4 that's Day One and we're working on that for Xbox One," DiPietro said, so there's no guarantee. But he was able to elaborate a little more on how search will work when the service goes live, adding that "[Discovery] will be a very similar experience to the Twitch website and Twitch mobile applications. You can browse by game, by channel [and] we're exploring ways to explore by genre." You'd think, then, that the ability to filter video via your friends list would also make the cut, but that sorting feature's not something users can expect initially. Rather, it's something DiPietro said could come at a later date.
It's clear that Twitch's UI across both PS4 and Xbox One is still a work in progress, or "squishy" as DiPietro obliquely put it. But what's not clear is how users will select and launch the app, or if they'll even be able to set Twitch sharing as default -- he couldn't say more. And while Twitch is essentially free to use, it remains to be seen whether or not console access to its video sharing service will be put behind a pay wall * la PS Plus or Xbox Gold. "That's entirely up to Sony," he said, and by Sony's own very public E3 promise, a remote possibility. Although, as Microsoft's recently proven again and again, you can never say never.
