PlayStation business will be hurt by currency changes, but smaller investment in hardware will help avoid a repeat of last gen
Sony
Sony lost billions on the PlayStation 3 launch, and the company is determined not to see that happen again with the PlayStation 4. As reported by Bloomberg, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House assured investors in a conference call last week that history would not repeat itself.
"We will not generate anything like the losses we did for the PlayStation 3," House said. Sony CFO Masaru Kato also noted that the investment in the PS4 is "much, much smaller," a result in part of using PC-like architecture with more standard chips for the new system instead of custom hardware like the PS3's Cell processor.
However, Sony is expecting its game division to post losses due to shifts in currency exchange rates. As the Japanese yen strengthened in recent years, Sony made arrangements to pay suppliers in US currency. However, the US dollar has been gaining value over the yen this year, and is predicted to strengthen further through March. Those losses will be partially offset by the increased value of US PS4 sales, but Sony, which had previously expected its games unit to break-even for the year, now expects those earnings to "deteriorate significantly."

The Payday series has outgrown the digital market place, says UK publisher 505 Games.
The original Payday: The Heist was a Steam and PSN hit, selling 1.6m copies. And 505 has picked up the rights to bring its hotly-anticipated sequel to the High Street.
The shooter will be released for Xbox 360 and PS3 on August 16th.
“Payday: The Heist has sold over 1.6m units since 2011 and there is a very enthusiastic and loyal community hungry for the next instalment,” said 505 Games product manager Rebecca Lazarus. “This is the first time retail has been able to cash-in on the brand’s success. Payday 2 was just too big for digital.”
505 Games will support Payday 2’s retail debut with a comprehensive marketing campaign, which to begin with focuses on the pre-order bonuses.
Lazarus added: “Our expectations are high for Payday 2. We have a proven brand, an extremely passionate community and we’re coming off the back of our biggest ever showing at E3 this year.”
Yesterday MCV reported that Payday 2 has already made a profit despite not being released until next week.

Lead architect actively sought strong voices that would put him 'through the wringer'
Sony needed strong criticism during its initial meetings with developers about PlayStation 4 hardware, the console’s lead architect Mark Cerny has said.
Cerny spoke to more than 30 teams worldwide during his preliminary discussions with developers about Sony’s next console. Speaking to Develop, he said that the first barrier to overcome was breaking through the niceties in a platform holder-developer conversation.
“The big issue for me was that you are coming forward from SCE and you are asking them about the things that never would have been asked before in the history of the company,” said Cerny.
“The first response you get when you ask for feedback is very nice and developers say what they think you want to hear to foster the relationship. [SCEA dev relations chief] Adam Boyes calls that ‘tea and crumpets’. But it if it’s tea and crumpets it doesn’t actually help.
“So I found that the groups I would tend to go visit the most were the groups where I would have a group of people on the other side of the table with very strong opinions. They would say what was right, what was wrong, and what needed doing. I was actively seeking out the groups who would put me through the wringer the most over the design.”

CastleStorm may be approaching the gates of Wii U, PS3, and Vita after being listed for the three platforms by German ratings board USK. Zen Studios' eclectic fusion of Angry Birds and tower defense has already hurled itself at XBLA, Windows 8, and Steam this year.
Zen didn't deny the Wii U port when asked by Nintendo Everything, telling the site it intends "to bring CastleStorm to as many platforms as possible." The Hungarian studio has plenty of experience with the newly listed systems, having sprung Marvel Pinball, Star Wars Pinball, and Zen Pinball 2 upon all three in recent years. Also, as evidenced by Marvel's Pinball's appearance onseven platforms to date, Zen is fond of the odd port or two.

Zen Studios - of Zen Pinball fame - is releasing its rhythm-based brawler KickBeat on 4th September on PS3 and Vita. This will be a Cross-Buy title, so purchase it on one Sony device and get it on both at no extra charge. No price has been announced, but Zen's Bobby Loertscher noted in a comment on the EU PlayStation Blog that "It'll be in line with our other games as far as price goes."KickBeat looks rather unique in that it's a rhythm game with combat, no on-screen prompts, and you're free to create your own attack sequences. The dance-fighting game will contain the music of Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Papa Roach, Pendulum and more. Zen promises it contains no Justin Bieber, but players can upload their own music onto it.

Sony has halted day one pre-orders of PS4 – but only as a precaution, MCV understands.
The firm told retailers last week to stop guaranteeing consoles to consumers for launch day. Yet we understand that Sony expects more stock as we approach the PS4 launch.
And some machines WILL be held back so that stores have something on shelves come launch day at the end of the year.
One retail source told us that Sony “doesn’t want consumers who couldn’t buy PS4 to buy Xbox One instead”.
A senior retail expert at one of the UK’s biggest companies told MCV that both PS4 and Xbox One pre-orders are ‘brilliant’. He said: “It’s a sign that we are at the start of a huge period for games – one unlike we’ve seen before with two consoles of this scale coming at the same time.”
Sony refused to comment on the sold out reports. A spokesperson told MCV: “Sony Computer Entertainment Europe does not comment on production and we have no further information to share at this time on our release strategy for PlayStation 4 which is scheduled for launch this holiday season.”
The PS4 release date and a better indication of stock levels is expected at Gamescom later this month.
Meanwhile, UK retailers expect Microsoft to follow Sony by putting a stop on day-one pre-orders for Xbox One.
But the platform holder told MCV that it’s working hard to meet the strong demand for its new console. And it won’t be halting day-one pre-orders just yet.
Stores told MCV that pre-order numbers for Xbox One have been “fantastic” and in-line with PS4. Retailers, including HMV and ShopTo, also expect Microsoft to put a halt on the console’s ‘Day One’ SKU ‘any day now’.
Yet sources close to Microsoft say that the computer giant has planned for a pre-order campaign that lasts “longer than just eight weeks”.
“Xbox One pre-orders are strong and we are confident with the momentum we’ve seen to date,” said Microsoft’s retail sales and marketing director Jon Grimes. “We are currently on track for our most anticipated console launch and are working hard to ensure we are able to meet customer demand.”

All PS4 owners will be able to record and upload gameplay footage, regardless of whether or not they subscribe to PlayStation Plus.
Microsoft revealed earlier today that only those who pay a monthly Xbox Live subscription will be able to access Xbox One’s Game DVR functionality, as well as a handful of other services such as Skype and OneGuide.
However, speaking on Twitter last night Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that all PS4 users, even those who do not subscribe to PS+, will be able to access the recording functionality.
Don’t forget, too, that while Xbox One records just five minutes of video PS4 will allow users to upload their last 15 minutes.
Sony will, however, be locking multiplayer behind the PS+ paywall for the first time with PS4. Xbox Live membership is already required for online multiplayer and a host of other Xbox media offerings.

A new firmware update for the PS VIta has been released, available upon booting up your handheld. Software update version 2.60 adds PlayStation Plus to each game's live area, making it easier to manage data to and from the cloud.
Version 2.60 also adds a shortcut to the network settings tab. Simply hold down the PS button on the Vita for a few seconds and it'll take you right there, allowing you to quickly address access airplane mode, WiFi settings, Bluetooth and, depending on your handheld model, 3G connection.
Another new feature is video and music streaming, now possible through connected devices and the PS3 without having to go through the laborious task of copying files to your PS Vita. Finally, more video formats are now supported by the PS Vita browser and there are new privacy settings for sharing trophy data.

Sony can no longer guarantee that if you pre-order a PlayStation 4 in the UK you'll get it at launch.A directive was sent to a number of UK retailers including Amazon and ShopTo.ShopTo displayed the message first: "Sony have confirmed all PlayStation 4 pre-orders placed from 6th August will now not be guaranteed for launch. You can still pre-order PS4 with us in case we receive cancellations and can fulfil your order for launch."ShopTo confirmed to Eurogamer that this order came from Sony and applied to any European retailer.Amazon soon followed with a similar message."Please note - due to high demand, orders placed for the PlayStation 4 console from 6th August may be received after release date. We will ship orders as soon as we receive sufficient inventory."Sony has yet to set a UK release date for PlayStation 4 beyond confirming that it will be on shop shelves before Christmas. We've asked Sony for comment and will update when we hear back.

A number of UK retailers have begun telling customers that new PS4 pre-orders cannot be guaranteed for day one.
CVG reports that Amazon is now telling customers the following: "Please note – due to high demand, orders placed for this PlayStation 4 console from August 6th may be received after release date. We will ship orders as soon as we receive sufficient inventory."
Asda, meanwhile, is saying this: "Any customer who has placed a pre-order with Asda for a Sony PlayStation 4 console before August 5th will have their console delivered on day of launch. These amended terms & conditions are for all pre-orders placed on or after the August 5th now that Sony have suspended guaranteed day one pre-ordering."
In addition, MCV can reveal that Blockbuster stores are giving a similar warning, as seen in the picture above which was captured at the weekend.
MCV will have more news on both the PS4 and Xbox One stock situation in tomorrow’s issue.

As has become a trend with Soul Sacrifice, the game has another set of free additional content available now via PSN. Players that download the DLC's unlock key will receive eight new quests and two bosses, Cat Sith and Beelzebub. In true fashion for the game, the bosses are pretty creepy.
PlayStation Blog notes that more content for Soul Sacrifice is on the way, with The Cobbler Triplets and the Old Master arriving on August 20, The Iron Lady's Tears of Red coming September 3 and The Fall of the Gods landing on September 17, though each release date may change.

If there's one glaring omission from the design of the PlayStation Vita, it's provision for a video output. While the notion of running games designed for a handheld on an HDTV may not appeal to many, the ability to capture footage or live-stream Vita gameplay is a highly attractive option to YouTube fans, bloggers and games journalists alike, so it was with much interest that we noted the arrival of a new product that adds video output to any Vita, with the option to buy a pre-modified, brand new handheld.Available from Japanese site 3DSvideocapture.com (yes, they'll also mod Nintendo's handheld too), the upgrade isn't cheap - we're talking total costs in the region of £200, notincluding the handheld itself. Alternatively you can spend around £300 in total if you buy a brand-new unit direct from the site (though beware custom fees). It's clearly quite an investment then, and it's worth pointing out that it's not the most flexible solution either. In common with previous 3DS video-out mods, image data is piped out of the Vita via USB rather than HDMI (in contrast to the custom hardware we used for ourStranger's Wrath, Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Assassin's Creed features), so if you did simply want to connect your handheld to your HDTV, you'd need to channel the signal through a PC - not exactly ideal. However, it is the only video-out solution available to potential Vita broadcasters, so we put the whole purchase procedure to the test, ordering the upgrade from the website, paying via PayPal, shipping the unit to Japan (via Royal Mail's "International Signed For" service - about £12) and then sitting back, hoping that our beloved handheld wouldn't get lost in the post. After about ten days, we received a DHL shipping notification that our Vita was on the way back to the UK, with the package arriving three days later. Opening up the box, we found our unit returned in excellent condition, with the handheld now sporting a small USB port on the base of the unit, to the left of the charging port and beneath the product barcode. "The mod is clearly geared towards video capture on PC - the USB connection ensures there's no way to directly interface the Vita to an HDTV for example."
Despite the inclusion of what must be a pretty intricate internal modification, our Vita was returned to the UK in pristine condition - with the addition of a USB 2.0 port on the underside of the unit.
A very poorly translated instruction manual clued us in on where to download the driver and viewer software. Once a product key is input (the key is tied to a serial number on the USB board implanted in your Vita), you're away. First impressions aren't particularly promising, but only because the software defaults to an interlaced 960x544 resolution, effectively murdering the image quality. The viewer software itself - at the moment at least - only supports Japanese, but it was easy enough to find the resolution settings, where 960x544 progressive is a valid selectable and offers up the kind of boost to image quality that you'd expect. The software has a vast array of options and for the non-Japanese speaker it can be bewildering, so we've provided accurate English translations of the options below.Returning to the modification itself, the viewer software reports that the USB connection is streaming anything from 296-304mbps - that's 37-38MB/s. Assuming there's no compression involved here, what we're looking at is a device that is pushing USB 2.0 bandwidth to its absolute, practical limit - so you should expect variable results on different hardware. At the top of the viewer, frame-rate throughput is measured and we found that on one PC, there would be occasional dips to 50fps before full refresh was restored (a 30fps limiter is available to iron out problems like this). The same PC simply would not work with the modified Vita when we tried its USB 3.0 ports. Moving to an older laptop, performance was improved - effectively a locked 60fps, with just the occasional, singular dropped frame. Our last test was based on our Core i7 3770K graphics card test platform, with the Vita connected to a USB 3.0 port. Here we achieved the desired locked 60fps throughput with no problem whatsoever. Mileage clearly will vary.

The original Dragon Age: Origins allowed players to pick from one of several races as they began their journey, but its divisive sequel, Dragon Age 2, set players in the prescribed role of a human named Hawke. The third title in the franchise, Dragon Age: Inquisition, will see the return of multiple player races. This juicy tidbit was revealed by GameInformer. "Large and varied environments, customisable armor, and the return of multiple player races are just a few of the ways BioWare is addressing feedback from previous titles in order to shape a new future for the franchise," read the report.Additionally, Inquisition will have mounts: a first for the series. These were shown off in GameInformer's video below, then confirmed by series executive producer Mark Darrah onTwitter.

The ad, unearthed by PlayStation Lifestyle, is for a senior graphics engineer at Bluepoint Games, but cites the new project in its body copy.
God Of War HD CollectionIt states: "We are currently bringing a Sony classic to current game systems as well as teaming our technical expertise with an industry leading developer on a next-gen, blockbuster franchise."
Bluepoint Games is the studio responsible for a number of Sony HD upgrades, including the God Of War Collection, Ico & Shadow Of The Colossus Collection and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection.
It also worked on the Vita version of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, and created the game engine used in both the PS3 and Vita versions.
Given its experience with previous HD collections, it seems likely that Bluepoint's job listing is referring to a similar HD collection coming to PlayStation 3 and potentially PlayStation Vita.
A number of other HD collections, not related to Bluepoint, are due for release later this year. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX is set for release on September 10 in America and September 13 in Europe.
Meanwhile, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD is also in development at Square Enix, while Sega is working on Wii U HD remakes of Yakuza and Yakuza 2.

Infinity Ward says the little-discussed current-gen versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts are actually benefitting from a parallel development cycle with next-generation versions.
The media spotlight has been squarely on the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game, but Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin assures fans that the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are receiving the same care and attention at the development level.
"Having an agnostic start, even before next-gen came out, really helped us get into this," Rubin told Games Industry.
"We're not making one platform and then porting. All the platforms are actually made at the same time. When somebody checks some work in, they have to make sure every platform works and that that check doesn't break on one platform," he explained.
"The new engine that we created is across all platforms. It's not just next-gen. So the current-gen is actually getting a lot of benefit out of this new engine," added Rubin.
He went on to say that the developer has adopted a new practice in art asset creation in order to optimize art across current and next-gen. "We're making our big art assets at cinema quality, not even PC quality, but above next-gen," he said.
"We use that and we create assets for each platform that are the best for the platform. So now every platform, instead of having a sort of average art asset, they're getting the best asset for that platform."
Activision Publishing president Epic Hirshberg said in a recent earnings call that pre-orders for Call of Duty: Ghosts are "well below" that of last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 owing to 'hesitation' caused by the looming console transition.
He went on to assure investors that the company has in place "the most aggressive marketing, retail, and digital programs in the history of the franchise" for this year's entry.
Activision has confirmed a Call of Duty: Ghosts release date of November 5 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. The game will be a launch title for Xbox One and PS4.

We're weary of the PlayStation Vita's constant firmware updates, but what version 2.6 brings to the table makes the patches almost bearable. Not only does it make managing game saves via PlayStation Plus easier, but the bubbles representing menu functions, games and apps are noticeably crisper, too. Sony has also added is the ability to toggle wireless connectivity -- WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and airplane mode -- by holding down the system's blue PS button. The features don't stop rolling there either, as you can now play media stored on a PC or PS3 remotely, without using the kludgy Remote Play app or copying the files to your handheld. While we've listed a quartet of tweaks here, there are a slew of other changes detailed in a video after the break and Sony has the full release notes on its official site.

An unidentified source claims a bundle featuring both the PS4 and PS Vita is being readied for the holiday season.
VG247 reports on the statements of a “well-placed anonymous source” of Machinima who supposedly has the inside scoop on the multi-hardware bundle. The source claims the bundle will retail for about $500, and will be made available by the end of this year.
The idea of packaging Sony’s devices together isn’t too far of a reach, considering Sony’s previous confirmation that aRemote Play feature between the devices will be a mandatory requirement for all PS4 titles that don’t already utilize another peripheral – such as the Playstation Eye or Move.
That said, Sony has made no comment on the source’s claims and the entire bit remains an unconfirmed rumour at the moment.
