Dragon's Crown scaled to heights of 300,000 shipments in its first week at retail, a welcome boost for publisher Atlus amid the financial struggles of its parent company.
Those figures are restricted to Japanese shipments (including download purchases), and could rise dramatically after Tuesday, August 6, when the PS3 and Vita brawler will be available in North America. At the very least the game proved more than popular with our Danny, who deemed Dragon's Crown to be developer Vanillaware's best effort yet.
"While it scales back the complexity that defined Princess Crown and Odin Sphere," said Danny in his four-and-half-stars review, "its focus on deep, varied fighting mechanics make it one of the best beat-em-ups released for any platform in recent years."
As for Atlus, it'll wait to see how the situation with parent company Index shakes out. Index is expected to sell its subsidiary options after effectively filing for bankruptcy protection. Atlus has reassured fans that its games, includingDragon's Crown, are "shipping on time."

August 4th, 2013, 20:00 Posted By: wraggster
In his keynote speech at QuakeCon this week, id Software's John Carmack revealed that the company is "extremely unlikely" to pursue software development for the Nintendo 3DS, the Nintendo Wii U, and the PlayStation Vita platforms, citing issues with publisher acceptance and adoption rates.
"I always thought that the Wii U and Vita would be great targets for Doom 3: BFG Edition," Carmack explained. "We should be able to bring that over directly, but [the platforms have] generated nothing for us on the publishing side of things, because they're somewhat marginalized platforms."
"Clearly there's a difference on the handheld platforms," Carmack continued. "While the 3DS is doing okay, the Vita's really not doing particularly well."
"A lot of that has to come from the fact that [...] everybody is carrying a pretty good gaming platform already, and selling a new one to them is a little bit of a harder sell," Carmack said, referring to the widespread adoption of smartphones.
"I'd love to be able to develop on the 3DS and some of the other small platforms," Carmack said. "I'd like to see the games show up on the Vita or the Wii U, just to play with some of the characteristics they've got there, but it's extremely unlikely to happen. There's a finite amount of time and only so many things we can focus on."

A Sony executive has acknowledged that Vita continues to underperform at retail.
The platform holder declined to offer specific Vita data in its first quarter financial report yesterday, instead bundling together Vita and PSP sales, which came in at just 600,000, down from 1.4 million in the same period a year earlier.
Responding to a question about the performance of the PlayStation division during the company's first quarter earnings call, an unnamed executive said (via Seeking Alpha): "Compared to the same period the previous year, PS3 numbers declined and the software business increased. And PSP continues the decline. And Vita, as you know, is not performing that well."
Sony's latest hardware sales guidance remained unchanged from its May outlook, with the firm still expecting to sell a combined total of five million handheld systems in the year ending April 2014.
The unnamed executive also reiterated comments made by Sony's chief financial officer in May, noting that the company's adoption of third party technology and production capabilities for PS4 mean it won't take the big hit it suffered launching the console's predecessor.
"We have not incurred a tremendous amount of investment for semiconductor development or the development of semiconductor to come up with chipset. We did not make a sizable investment there. Well, partially, there has been some development of chipset. But in terms of the weight of investment, PS4 is a much lighter platform compared to PS3."
Sony has confirmed a "holiday 2013" PS4 release date in Europe and the US and a PS4 price of £349 / €399 / $399.

Battlefield 4 developer DICE has answered some burning questions regarding Battlefield 4's vehicles and marine combat.
The studio has confirmed that the game will feature a whole new selection of Chinese vehicles thanks to the addition of that faction.
It revealed one new vehicle - the Chinese Z-10W Attack Heli - in a new screenshot pictured above. Some of the other Chinese vehicles in the game include:
- Type 99 MBT
- ZFB-05 Armored Car
- Z-9 Haitun Transport Heli
- DV15 Interceptor Attack Boat
The studio also discussed one of the game's biggest new gameplay mechanics - naval combat.
"Amphibious Assault will play a big role in Battlefield 4 as we've added attack boats like the RCB-90 (U.S.) and jet-skis. Controlling the sea in addition to the land and air will play a crucial role in victory," it explained.
DICE confirmed that, for the first time in the BF series, infantry will be able to use one-handed weapons and gadgets while swimming - useful in the case of a pre-explosion bail-out.
The PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 Battlefield 4 release date is set for October 29 in the US and November 1 in the UK . Next-gen versions will be out "this holiday" alongside the new consoles.

A new entry in the Ace Combat series is to dip its tailfin into the free-to-play waters.
Namco Bandai has announced Ace Combat Infinity, which will be released exclusively on PS3 as a free download some time late this year. The game will feature both single and multiplayer modes.
“The Ace Combat franchise has evolved dramatically over the years, but never before have we been able to offer its amazing graphics and tactical action for free,” Namco Bandai Europe senior VP Olivier Comte stated.
“The team at Project Aces listens very carefully to its players, and is bringing the best the series has to offer to Ace Combat Infinity, with plenty of new surprises too.”
Fellow free-to-play title World of Tanks is due for release on Xbox 360 later this year.

BioShock Vita could still happen… providing Sony gives the project the thumbs up.
Announced in summer 2011, BioShock on Vita has, as of February this year, still not entered production. But Irrational Games dev Ken Levine says it’s not for want of trying.
“I am literally trying to make a match between the parties [Sony and Irrational],” he told Kotaku. “They have to agree and it has to be a business deal. I’ve been trying to do that for a very long time. I’ve still very much engaged in that. I can’t personally greenlight the thing myself.
“I have conversations. I’ve talked to all the parties in the past couple of weeks.”
How long this situation can persevere – and indeed, how long a triple-A Vita game remains a viable prospect – is certainly up for debate. It’s safe to say that if this game hopes for a realistic chance of arriving a deal needs to be struck sooner rather than later.

Similar specs and huge memory will make development easier, claims tech guru
The capabilities of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are “essentially the same,” says industry legend John Carmack.
Speaking at QuakeCon, Id software's technical wizard admitted he hadn't done serious benchmarking and that he had to keep some details secret due to NDAs, but said the similarity of the systems is overwhelming.
“It's almost amazing how close they are in capabilities, how common they are, and that the capabilities they give are essentially the same,” said Carmack in his annual keynote.
“We can talk about the differences in memory architectures but the bottom line being that they are mulitcore AMD processors with AMD graphics – it's almost weird how close they are.”
Perhaps the biggest difference has been in public perception, and Carmack said he felt much of the controversy surrounding the Xbox One's “always on” used games systems and Kinect 2.0 was “a bit of a witch hunt.”

Square Enix has confirmed work is already underway on a follow-up to this year's best-selling game Tomb Raider.
The project has been hinted at before, but has now been confirmed by Square Enix's European and American CEO Phil Rogers in an official blog post.
"I am excited to reveal that we are well into development on a next-generation Tomb Raider sequel," he wrote, before confirming it was one of the publisher's "next-gen blockbusters".
Tomb Raider rebooted the franchise back in March and is the biggest-selling game in the UK so far this year.
While Rogers says the game is "well into development", we're unlikely to see anything of it until later this year, if not in 2014.

Vita and PSP sales fall to 600,000 as PS3 and PS2 sales also slump before next-gen launch
A significant increase in research and development costs for the PS4 has resulted in bigger operating losses for Sony's games division in its latest financial results.
Operating losses for the games business rose to £98 million ($149m) for the three months ending June 30th, compared to £23 million ($35m) during the same period last year.
Sales for the PlayStation business were at £785 million ($1.2 bn), slightly down from the previous year. PS3 and PS2 sales sold a combined 1.1 million units, significantly down on the previous quarter in which 3.4 million units were sold.
Vita and PSP sales meanwhile fell again to 600,000, a drop of over 50 per cent from the three months prior. Despite the slump, Sony has not revised its forecasts and still expects to sell five million handhelds during the next fiscal year.
Software sales also dropped to 64 million, but with the PS4 set to launch in Holiday 2013, Sony still hopes software sales will reach 319 million by the end of the financial year.

Capcom will bring Monster Hunter Frontier G to PS3 and Wii U later this year, according to a translation of the latest issue of Famitsu by Siliconera. The MMO is an update to 2007's Monster Hunter Frontier, which is already available for Xbox 360 and PS3. Those two platforms should have recently received an update to Monster Hunter Frontier G2, according to the game's preview site. Even though the game will eventually be the same across all four platforms, PS3 and Wii U versions will have separate servers from PC and Xbox 360.
Like Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Frontier G will be compatible with the Wii U's Game Pad and Pro Controllers. However, Siliconera notes that it will not make use of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk control configuration. Frontier G will be available as a free download with physical copies available for 6,090 yen ($62), and will require monthly fees. The game will launch on November 20 for PS3 and December 11 on Wii U.

John Riccitiello, the former CEO of Electronic Arts, is confident that the Xbox One and PS4 consoles will surpass the reach of their predecessors.
"I think they'll be bigger than the last generation, actually," Riccitiello told Games Industry in reference to the next-gen console's potential user base.
"The last generation can be described as supercharged engines - they had super-powerful boxes. But the entirety of the online communication and being able to connect to your friends and all that stuff, a seamless, smooth, social experience, was just masking tape - barely put together," he argued.
Riccitiello says the rise of fast broadband internet and its deep integration, combined with seamless user interfaces is what will help propel next-gen machines above their current counterparts.
"Remember that this was eight years ago. Most people were just moving on from their 28k modems. Now these are fully functioning, fully integrated online computers connected to the best screen in your house," he said.
"You put a super computer under your TV, plug it in with one connection and it works. It knows who you are, it knows what your games are and it's unbelievably simple; it's not like PC plug and play, it's just plug and play. The next generation of consoles are going to be a massive improvement on user interface. So I think that's going to matter," he said.
Riccitiello shares the notion of Microsoft senior vice president of Interactive Entertainment Business Yusuf Mehdi, who has suggested that the multi-functional capabilities of both next-generation consoles could help them attain a user base more than three times as large as the current generation.
John Riccitiello resigned from his position as EA's CEO on March 30, 2013. Since his appointment in 2007, Riccitiello had helped modernise EA from a straightforward triple-A publisher into a jack-of-all-trades company that delivered goods across social networks, mobiles, consoles and the digital PC space.

Markets encouraged by strong performance of core franchises and digital sales
Take-Two Interactive
take2europe.com
Analysts are beginning to bet on the sales of Rockstar and Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto V, due this year on September 17.
Colin Sebastian of Baird expects the company to ship around 13 million units in the launch window with full year sales of around 20 million units.
Doug Creutz of Cowen & Company estimates full-year sales of around 18 million, although he admitted that "it remains essentially a guessing game on where the title will come in between 15 million and 25 million units."
Last night Take-Two revealed quarterly sales of $142.7 million, down 37 per cent. But strong sales of core gaming titles Borderlands and BioShock Infinite, along with digital revenues that are up 128 per cent year-on-year, will encourage investors that the publisher has a very good handle on the current console and PC gaming business.
BioShock Infinite has shipped 4 million units to date while Borderlands 2 has shipped over 7 million units.
