GameSpot has been running a feature about how audio plays just as big of a role in the next-generation delivery of gaming as something as silly like graphics. There are a lot of buzzwords tossed around, but the point comes through clear as a bell: gamers have a lot to look forward to when it comes to what you hear.
The PS3 has the audio processing power to push 512 simultaneous voices or sounds at the same time. Sotaro Tojima (he's the sound guy for MGS4) wants to make you think you're in a movie studio when you hear his goods. That means a slew of environmental and situational audio backed by surround sound. Hope you're ready to invest in more hi-def equipment because it's going to take more than just an HDTV to get the full experience.
Expect to spend around $200 for a quality setup in the sound area.

SPOnG has been picking up on gossip over the past six months or so which foretells a major revision of the EyeToy camera, long-term darling of accessible grandma-friendly gaming, constituting a major element of the PlayStation 3's as-yet secret functionality.
As well as recent claims the new EyeToy will deliver a blow to Nintendo's Revolution plans and feature depth-recognition technology (an open secret at Sony for some time now) an official video puts the new device alongside the Cell Processor and PlayStation 3's hard drive as being on the top tier of announcements.
The video, sent around by SCEA to promote its upcoming E3 showing, mentions the PSP and the PlayStation 2, then moves onto PlayStation 3-specific announcements. “Hardcore gamers really want to know one thing: What's going on with PlayStation 3...” the video outlines. It continues, “If they announce anything, [the video is set as though its presenters aren't reading SCEA script. They are.] about pricing, release date, future titles, network platform.. [interestingly unexplained: Network Platform is the codename of SCEJ's in-development online network]” Then it explains we'll be seeing “...Blu-Ray, Cell Processor, hard drive news, EyeToy and so, so much more!”
As you can see, EyeToy sits atop an impressive roster.
Expect full coverage of all things Sony direct from the conference on May 8th and the E3 showfloor between May10th and May 12th.

Though EA has released several FIFA iterations this year, the new 2006 World Cup might be worth a look if you haven't played the series in a while and have $30 bucks to spare. If anything it should get you pumped for the world's largest sporting event if you're a futbol buff.
IGN 84% - "EA put together its most solid soccer gameplay experience yet and the deepest World Cup title of all time. Still, it's hard to argue that the gameplay, an obvious imitation of Winning Eleven, is better, but with star players and a nifty new shooting mechanism, it would be hard to argue it's worse."
Games Radar 70% - "The biggest disappointment is the sheer lack of innovation in the game engine and graphics. Yes, the shooting mechanic is a little different, but for the most part the gameplay is the same as the last few FIFA games."

IBM Developerworks is discussing the PS3 Cell Processor Security Architecture today on Developerworks. It details the hardware level security for isolating processes that exists in the Cell processor's architecture." From the article: "The architecture's main strength is its ability to allow an application to protect itself using the hardware security features instead of the conventional method of solely relying on the operating system or other supervisory software for protection. Therefore, if the operating system is compromised by an attack, the hardware security features can still protect the application and its valuable data. As an analogy, consider the protection the supervisory software provides as the castle's moat and the Cell BE security hardware features as the locked safe inside the castle

"The Dog" is Japan's #1 puppy franchise and produces everything from mugs and stationery to beach towels, cake decorating kits, panties and much more, right down to little ornaments of dogs wearing fairy costumes complete with wands (don't even ask!), and a licensed Monopoly: The Dog Edition. No doubt being impressed with Nintendogs on the DS, this week Sony has released their own branded pet sim for the PSP. Here there's 16 breeds to choose from including Chihuahua, Labrador Retriever, French Bull Dog, Golden Retriever, Papillon, Border Collie, Dalmatian, Pug, Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier, Beagle, German Shepherd, Shiba, Dachshund, Maltese and Poodle.

With over 300 accessories to dress up your pooch, no doubt this game will impress the girls and other petlovers, and using the photo shoot mode you can take adorable shots and upload them to your PC. With a special fish eyed lens you can also reproduce the signature style of "The Dog" pictures for cuteness to the extreme, or coat man's best friend in bling, bad boy gear, or whatever floats your boat. Lastly an Ad-Hoc Wireless mode also lets you and a friend’s dog play together, and at the hot price of US$ 34.90, your new happy life with The Dog begins this week.

Previously only available in Value and Giga Packs, the Ceramic White PSP was and still is a special edition only for those living in Japan or of course, us elite group of hardcore gamers. Now however, if you don't need Sony's own headphones and remote, the soft case, hand strap and 32MB Memory Stick, the new Ceramic White Standard Pack at US$ 219.90 is a great way to save some cash for a game or other accessories like larger batteries. Along with a slick white PSP console and standard battery, here you also get an AC Adapter that works worldwide and a free travel plug to match your country. Since every PSP game is region free too (for games that is, UMD movies are region 2 in Japan and Europe against region 1 for USA), there's no worries there, and after selecting English menus on the console it'll remember your selection forever.

News from Eurogamer
Game Republic's quite busy, it seems. Yoshiki Okamoto's already said his Japanese studio's working on an unnamed Xbox 360 game, and now Famitsu's revealed that it's also handling the PSP version of Brave Story.
In an article partly translated by IGN, Famitsu says the PSP one's called Brave Story: Aratanaru Tabijin (New Traveller), and will be a role-playing game.
The Brave Story games, as you may know, are based on Miyuki Miyabe's Japanese manga of the same name, which is being adapted into an animated film due out in Japan this July, directed by Koichi Chigira. (And when I say "you may know" I'm talking to Rob, obviously.)
Sony Japan's announced plans to do both PS2 and PSP games, and while the PS2 is more of an action-adventure, the PSP title will see you play as an original character on a quest involving the original cast.
In the original Brave Story, er, story, 10-year-old Wataru ends up in a bizarre world called Vision, where he makes new friends, learns magic and tries to make his way to a particular goddess who, he hopes, can save his mother's life.
Sony's yet to announce UK dates for either Brave Story title.

Killer 7 creator Suda Goichi is working on a PlayStation 3 title called Kurayami, which means "Darkness" in Japanese.
Appropriately enough it's about someone stuck in a strange village with a torch; the player takes control and has to solve puzzles and deal with general weirdness to find his way out.
Details are scant, but w eknow Goichi will be working with regular pals Grasshopper.
An Edge feature on Grasshopper - the source of the reports, and home to some interesting concept art - also talks about the developer's professed Kafka influence.
Expect a bit of weirdness then - anyone who played Capcom's Killer 7 will already know the sort of thing Goichi's capable of, while those with a Nintendo DS may already be on the lookout for another of his games, Contact, in which the player tries to find the scattered pieces of an alien professor's power-source.

SEGA's begun its E3-teasing with a very welcome announcement - Virtua Tennis 3 is on its way to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Due out next spring and on display at E3, VT3 is the most visually detailed VT game yet - SEGA's promising "photo-realistic graphics and advanced player animations" including detailed facial expressions. See screenshots to make your own mind up. SEGA's creative director Matt Woodley reckons "the quality is so sharp and clear you can even see the veins on the players' necks". And the whatever-else on Maria Sharapova, my dad will be hoping.
There'll be new gameplay features too. Although the fundamental tennis game is unlikely to change a great deal (given how brilliant it was anyway, we can't say we mind that much), we can expect a host of new mini-games to join the most popular from previous VT titles.
Mini-games of course contribute to VT's Career mode, which will be back here, taking you all over the world and across every court surface - with new players and refined artificial intelligence for the ones you're up against. You'll also be able to customise your own character to a previously unachievable degree.
No word on online multiplayer yet, but it seems like a bit of a shoo-in.
We'll bring you our thoughts on Virtua Tennis 3 when we get to E3. Well, Kristan's thoughts - it's not like he's going to let anybody else near this one.

News from Eurogamer
Sony appears to have finally woken up to the idea of downloadable PSP demos - and today's release is for one we've been looking forward to for absolutely ages, LocoRoco.
A trial version of the game, which involves tilting the play area to wobble some blobs around platform-style levels, is available from the game's Japanese site now.
The actual download is only 8MB, but unfortunately you'll first need to download the new 2.7 system firmware to play it.
Once you've done that - and although Sony would discourage you from running the US firmware on a UK PSP, there's actually nothing stopping you - you can download the demo, put your PSP in USB Connection mode while connected to your PC, and by popping the EBOOT.PBP file in a /PSP/GAME/UCJS1O041/ folder on your Memory Stick Duo you should put yourself in a position to join in the fun.
The only thing you might want to bear in mind is that version 2.7 firmware will rule out any chance you had of running homebrew code - at least until someone cracks this one, anyway.
LocoRoco is due out over here on 23rd June according to Sony's most recent UK schedule.

News from CVG
Arriving in Europe today with Flash support, improved music playback and, from May 25, LocationFree TV!
As we reported yesterday, Japanese PSP owners are in line for a new PSP Firmware update 2.7, which adds some funky new features like Macromedia Flash support and the ability to play various music files.
We also hoped news of a similar European Firmware release wouldn't be too far behind, but Sony has only gone and surprised us by announcing it just one day later, no doubt sparking tears of joy amongst European fans of its sleek little handheld.
Just like the Japanese PSP update, Euro PSP owners will get splendid new Flash support for browsing the web, as well as now being able to play MP3, ATRAC, AAC and WMA music file formats, substantially increasing their audio options.
Advertisement:Perhaps the most interesting development though is 2.7's LocationFree TV, with Sony promising that instead of watching a TV set, TV will now come to you via your home tuner. Apparently you'll be able to watch live TV from wherever you are, playback recorded programmes and even set a timer to tape future recordings, with LocationFree being launched in the UK, France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands from next month.
Seems like a splendid development and, if it means we'll never miss an episode of Lost or Green Wing again, that's just fine by us. You'll be able to score LocationFree TV and all the other goodies from May 25, by heading on over to www.yourpsp.com, or by downloading it direct via wi-fi, now.
Remember that Homebrew is a goner before you update

Hands on from Gamespot:
If you're familiar with The Getaway series for the PlayStation 2, then you know that these games have delivered an impressively authentic re-creation of modern-day London featuring mission-based driving and shooting action. The action itself has met with mixed response from critics and other game players, which may be why the next game from the makers of the series is sporting a completely different brand name--along with plenty of changes to The Getaway's old formula. We got our first chance to get our hands on Gangs of London at an SCEA pre-E3 event earlier this month, and though our experience with the game was relatively brief, we were impressed with both the wide range of content as well as the presentation on display.
As the name suggests, Gangs of London lets you play as enforcers representing a number of different criminal organizations based out of England. The game's glamorized presentation of criminal life and gang-on-gang violence seems clearly inspired by other pop-culture portrayals of stuff like this, such as Guy Ritchie's movies like Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. However, the game's sense of style is distinctly different from The Getaway at least in one respect: There are graphic-novel-style cutscenes, like the ones in Max Payne, used to move the story along. SCEA reps promised that these would have added voiceover to give them more character, but from what we saw, they already looked great.

Article from IGN:
Developer K2 is known for its work on the Tenchu series, but now it's trying something totally different. The developer is hard at work on Valhalla Knights, a new RPG for the PSP set to be published by in Japan by Marvelous Interactive. Veteran RPG maker Yoshifumi Hashimoto is serving as producer.
In Valhalla Knights, you play as one of those RPG heroes who wakes up in a strange land and has no idea of his identity. You set off on a journey to recover your memories, knowing only one thing: the blood of a legendary hero flows through you.

American gamers who looked on in envy as Sony Europe announced Gangs of London for the PSP last year thought they were in Barney (Barney...Barney Rubble...trouble!)--the company never announced that the game would make it stateside. Those Cockney rhyming slang lessons can continue, as SCEA today finally revealed that Gangs of London will be released in the US.
The game is a spin-off of The Getaway series, which was best-known for accurately re-creating Central London. Players with short-attention spans will appreciate the game's many modes, which includes a driving/action campaign, turn-based strategy and card-game hybrid gang battle, and the much more peaceful tourist mode.

MikeDX has posted in our forums that he is taking the source of TMKs Port of MAME for the PSP and working on it, heres what he posted:
<blockquote>Ok folks, here's the deal
I've taken TMK's pspmame, and i've started taking it to pieces. so far it runs the following games:
Pacman
Flicky
Track&Field
Galaxian
What I want to achieve with this is to release a version of MAME on the PSP with just the *cream* of old titles (roms not included)
So, let me know what games you want to see in there! I'm only going to include games that fall into bth of these categories:
1. They must run FULL SPEED (zero frameskip) on the psp
2. They must not have been released within the past 10 years.
Oh and it works great on 2.01
