Edge Magazine takes a look at comedy in games ... and comes up pretty short. With the exception of oft-cited titles like pretty much the entire early LucasArts gems (Secret of Monkey Island, Sam and Max, Day Of The Tentacle, and others) and the occasional Conker's Bad Fur Day or Bard's Tale, there isn't much gamers can point to.
They talk with Grumpy Gamer (and writer of the hysterical Secret of Monkey Island) Ron Gilbert who frames the problem this way: "I think games have spent a lot of time trying to be movies, but the thing about games is that they’re organic, that players can hopefully to do whatever they want, and if you can work humor into that, then that’s great.” So games like Secret of Monkey Island are passed over in favor of the occasional gag in Metal Gear Solid?
Hopefully gamers still crave the scripted comedy of the adventure classics. With fellow Lucas Arts alum Tim Shafer taking top honors in writing at GDC for Psychonauts, and a new Sam & Max adventure coming our way, there's at least a modicum of hope that gamers will embrace funny games.

The official story: "There has not been any official imagery released from Sony Computer Entertainment showcasing the PS one emulator on PSP. Please disregard those images as false."--a Sony representative.
What we heard: This morning, PSP Updates posted a news report about the PSP's upcoming PSone game emulation, based on an e-mail from a reader. Along with the e-mail, the site reprinted three pictures that showed the emulation system's interface and dropped hints about Sony's plans for the service.
Two of the pictures showed a lineup of downloadable games that featured a number of PSone games including Gran Turismo 2, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy VII. The third picture seems to be a submenu from which the user can download Gran Turismo 2, and contains information like the ESRB rating, details on the game's support for ad hoc and Infrastructure Wi-Fi modes, and interestingly enough, a price. Downloading the game would purportedly cost players $15.
However, There are a number of suspicious things about the PSP-download menu pictures. For one, look at the roster of games being offered. Sure, Gran Turismo 2 and Final Fantasy VII make sense, but what's with all the mediocre titles cluttering up the list? Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare? Duke Nukem: Land of the Babes? Not one, but two poorly received Broken Sword games? Then there's Doom II--which was was never released as a stand-alone game on the PlayStation. It was instead included in the original PlayStation version of Doom.
Beyond that, two of the pictures show text transposed over the PSP's signature background of gently lolling wavy lines. The thing is, those lines normally move, and the two screen shots show them in identical positions on the screen, suggesting that someone created both images from the same picture of the PSP background.
On the other hand, it's possible that these are conceptual mockups of the interface prepared internally by Sony, in which case everything is placeholder information (including the price), and things like a duplicated background or fabricated list of games wouldn't be any big deal. Also, incorporating obscure details like the PSP's Parental Control system (which includes 11 different levels of content restrictions) shows an unusual attention to detail for a faker who couldn't be bothered to change up the background from shot to shot.
But if that were the case, why wouldn't Sony have sent forth its cease-and-desist lawyer squad to have the images pulled? You know, the crew that made early info about God of War 2 and a co-op mode for the PSP Killzone disappear from the Web? Or the peeps that did the same thing when a site jumped the embargo date on screens for Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom? It just doesn't add up.
Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus.
Well as i already posted and it seems the world of gaming sites agrees that they were indeed fake pictures

IGN have a review of Go! Sudoku, heres an excerpt:
It's hard justifying certain videogame purchases. It's even harder when broke. The ultimate dilemma, though, rises when a full-priced game packs similar content to something you can score for under a dollar. That's the conundrum with Go! Sudoku, from developer Sumo Digital. On the one hand, it includes a wealth of challenging puzzles; while on the other hand, these puzzles aren't much different from what you'd find in a local newspaper.
Sudoku, for those who may not know, is a game of logic where you need to assign numbers on a grid made up of 91 squares. You can only choose the numbers one through nine and the goal is to form squares, rows and columns without any overlapping numbers. It sounds simple, and it can be, but it can also provide a brain-melting test of your logic abilities. It's a fun, rewarding game, both on paper and in digital form. Of course, the nature of the PSP allows for bonuses like wireless multiplayer and downloadable puzzles, so it's not as though you're paying for exactly the same experience.

While I love my Playstation Portable as a both a game machine and portable media device, one of the biggest limiations is the fact you're limited to the storage on the memory stick. Even with a 1GB stick, after you drop on a movie or two, you're really limited in what you can store on it compared to an iPod.
About a year ago, I picked up an Asus WL-HDD drive enclosure (available from Newegg for $88). What's cool about it is that it's not only an external 2.5" drive case, but also packs in a 100mb ethernet connection, 802.11g ethernet access point, and an additional USB port for external drives. This is in an extremely small (180mm*90mm*25mm) form factor that weighs only 200g - perfect for travelling or a small home NAS device. I ended up dropping in an old 20GB laptop drive just to play around with it.
Check out the linkabove for full info on how to do it.

Art has released a new version of X-Flash for the PSP, heres the info:
Hi Guys,
This is (yet another) firmware modder/flasher.
I wrote it primarily for a quick way to apply my own firmware mods, delete the gameboot movie like pspset does, and remove the XMB menu wave effect like Flashmod does. It can write a Custom Font, and use any firmware version as a version tricker. There is also a complete Registry Backup and Restore Tool biult into this version. The two features above are both firsts I think As always, I have tested every function of this program with one of my own 1.50 PSPs. (X-Flash V7 all functions tested 6/4/06).
Be sure to read the text file included with this package. A future version of this program is supposed to operate like the XMB menu. (ie. selection of fonts, selection of sounds, selection of version numbers, etc.) There is significant improvement in program operation for V7. Future versions will require less memory stick space.

PSmonkey posted a new update(newspost) on his site regarding his N64 emu for PSP:
1) Monkey64 Will stay in user mode! It will always be 2.0+/eboot loader compatible.
2) Monkey64 Will not come out this week (sorry). It will come out as soon as I feel it's ready (maybe next week?). No need to ask me when since I don't know when.
3) After next release I am taking a few weeks break to work on Iris again.
Just needed to clear that up.
The shots another quest64 shot. Yet this time the camera is in the right place and the projection is much more accurate then before.

Freedom Fry has announced his port of ucLinux to the PSP.
From the original Post:
This is a Release for all the non believers and elitist "hackers" in the "scene". After some weeks of hacking i made it. Yet another time the REAL breakthrough stuff comes from FRANCE!!!
WARNING: It doesnt do anything useful yet. It also runs in kernel mode which means incase of a malfunction anything could happen including bricking your PSP (although very unlikely, i have run it a hundred times during development).
I will release the source (or maybe only patches) in the next days. Give me some time to recover first.
More info
A tiny Bootloader made with the opensource PSPSDK is used to initialize the Memory and a little bit of the Hardware. It decompresses the ucLinux kernel into Userspace and runs it. Currently it relies on the Display Hardware beeing initialized by the PSP Operating system (and PSPSDK) to make the Framebuffer Console work. As you can see from the dmesg, this is also pretty much the only thing that works at all.
Screenshots and Download Via Comments
EDIT by DraconumPB: Beware of this software until it is fully tested! A version of this runs on iPod as well, but I have in the past bricked a first-gen iPod by installing this (it did run but eventually caused an endless boot-loader loop). As stated it runs in kernel mode and therefore can really mess with your PSP and cause damage to your PSP that can't be repaired. However, this is still an excellent effort towards linux running and operating on PSP without emulation!

Raf and the PSP Radio Team have once again updated their Wifi Streaming Music app for the PSP, heres whats new:
What's new:
0.38.09 (r1025) (2006-04-06)
NEW FEATURES
(raf) Dyn/Retawq: tips can be overriden with your own html. Just replace APP_Retawq/tips.html!
(raf) Dyn/Dev: New export to allow for plugins to access the sound device buffer (for visualization plugins).
(raf) Dyn/Core: When the key combo for killing plugins is used, now the plugin will be unloaded as well (L+R+START). (A red -exception- screen may flash will unloading the plugin.. this is expected atm.)
(raf) Core: Rename directories per HalfastII directions so that corrupted icons don't get displayed on f/w 1.5.
(raf) Dyn/Core: Plugins are now automatically unloaded when they exit.
BUG FIXES
(raf) Core: Networking. Network profile enumeration code modification. Based on idea from Danzel from ps2dev forums. This may help people who's profile wasn't showing up.
(raf) Dyn/Core: No longer tries to 'continue' a plugin if 'Off' is selected.
(raf) Dyn/Core: Now plugin giveup access code is better handled. Retawq can switch to pspradio now seamlessly. (Select the running plugin again to return to the plugin.)
(raf/ditlew) Core: If F/W 2.6 is detected, don't poll for HPRM. This allows PSPRadio to work on 2.6 via eLoader.
(raf) Core: On exit, just call the game exit syscall. This may prevent the app from crashing when on eLoader. (It still hangs on 2.6)
(raf) Dyn/Core: Corrected bug that would cause FSS plugins to report error when loading even if they loaded correctly.
(raf) Dyn/Retawq: Reduced most of the drawing issues by decreasing the number of columns by 1.

Ultimate Block Party offered the perfect bang for the buck back at its late December 2005 US release. Sure, it didn't stack up to Lumines, but what puzzler does?
The game's original developer/publisher Cyber Front is having a go at a sequel, the latest issue of Famitsu reports. Known as Koro Koro Kollon (the original was called "Kollon" in Japan), the sequel has the same basic rules. As colored blocks push the playfield up, your goal is to rotate your current set of blocks in order to make four like-colors line up and disappear. It's unclear if any major gameplay changes have been made for the sequel, but Cyber Front has reportedly increased the play field size, making it easier to see the action.
Four main modes of play are planned for the title. In addition to single player practice mode and a tutorial mode, the game includes wireless play for two players; this is a bigger deal in Japan, as the original Japanese release of Kollon lacked multiplayer play. Also included is a campaign mode where you work through a story as you defeat CPU opponets.
Koro Koro Kollon will see Japanese release on 6/22. A US version has yet to be announced (although unlike last time, let's hope it actually does get announced before seeing release).

Oh the joys of spring. It is time for everyone to go outside, hit up the links and enjoy an afternoon of golf. Or for the gamers, stay inside and play simulated golf in our nicely air conditioned homes. This is Mad Catz Gametrac Real World Golf. This is an actual video game with golfing hardware controllers. The controller will sit on the ground and connect to an Xbox or PS2 console, then there are wires that attach to gloves worn by the golfer.
The included game has 10 different golf courses and it will perfectly emulate the motions you make with your hands. Just think, a year from now you might be the one playing in the Masters Tournament. This will be available next week for $69.99.

Yesterday, the internet was alive with reports that Sony Europe vice president George Fornay had revealed its next-gen console, the PlayStation 3, was set to retail in the territory for around 500 euros, or 350 GBP, on a French radio show. Now though, the company has spoken out, claiming that "at no time did he suggest or indicate a specific price point or price range for PS3, and any reports that he did so are incorrect".
Speaking to website GamesIndustry.biz, SCEE corporate communications director Nick Sharples explained that the notion the PS3 was set to hit shelves as a price point between 499 and 599 euros was based on "a mistranslation or misunderstanding of the [radio] discussion, which was actually focused on the relative value of PS3 as a Bluray Disc player."
Apparently, Fornay's comments merely illustrated that, at a hypothetical price point of 500 euros, "PS3 would be expensive when one looked at the current price of a video games machine, at far below 500 Euros, but extremely good value when looking at the BD and HD technology inside".
So, we're still no closer to discovering that magic PS3 price point it seems. Ah well, there's always E3 to sort that little lot out, we suppose.

All things considered, Sony's PlayStation Portable library isn't doing badly for decent puzzle games - so far we've had the superb Lumines, the blobule antics of Archer MacLean's Mercury and the slightly surreal antics of Ubisoft's Exit, to name but a few. Now, Take-Two is throwing its cards on the pile with the Tecmo-developed Tokobot, set for release over here this on April 7.
In a nutshell, Tokobot sees you controlling the tiny droids of the title in a bid to traverse the hazardous terrain of Moritari and stop the planet's inhabitants from abusing Tokobot technology for their own nefarious ends. The twist is that Tokobots can be combined to perform 'joint actions' - such as transforming into a useful ladder, swing or glider - and can unleash Karakuri Combinations, forming a single giant entity, including a train, crane and samurai.
In anticipation of the game's release tomorrow, Take-Two has wafted a Q&A with Tokobot's director Masahiro Shidara across the web. In an avalanche of ceaseless generosity, we've slapped up the whole thing for your reading pleasure below.

There's nothing quite like a Cell processor news story to start off your day, and this morning we've got a cracker. Delivering a lecture in Austin Texas, the father of Cell himself, Peter Hofstee told a group of eager onlookers how the PS3 is going to be more powerful than a Vindaloo from a Newcastle curry house.
Speaking about IBM's work on the Cell project, Hofstee was quick to note that Sony - and particularly the PlayStation father - had a lot of influence on the PS3 processor. "It really was Sony and Ken Kutaragi that was the driver for this project," he said. "He spent quite a bit of money on it. $400 million for a processor...this is about as serious as it gets." "Remarkably," he added, "this chip is almost exactly the same size, in square millimetres, as the first chip that went into the PlayStation2."
The Cell designer then touched on the trials of designing a chip for a game console: "With game processors," Hofstee noted, "because of the economics of how game systems seems to have worked in the past - you always have to wait and see if it works that way going forward - is that game developers get a stable platform for five or six years." "And because that is sort of how it works," he added, "there is a big focus on chip size and power and cost reduction over that period."
When asked by our friends over at Next-Gen.biz how he felt, as a scientist, working inside the wonderful world of videogames, Hofstee said: "I think games are an interesting application area, but quite clearly, Cell is not just for games. There are many other areas it can be used. Games are the thing that inspired us to do it."
"I think the biggest problem is to find ways to make [Cell] effective for the programmers," said Hofstee. "My dream is that everyone who has a PlayStation can start programming with Cell."
With the PlayStation 3 apparently set to arrive at around 350 GBP, lets hope that Sony's much-touted processor is worth every penny.
