For many years, PlayStation 3 consoles whose minimum FW version was 3.60 or higher were totally unhackable even if one didn’t mind using a hardware flasher to downgrade the firmware.
PS3HEN 2.4.0 brings numerous subtle additions that may prove useful to some.
However, with the advent of PS3HAN, these consoles got limited hacks and then with PS3HEN’s release in April, more CFW-esque features became available.
Earlier this week, PS3HEN 2.4.0 got released, which continues the trend of frequent updates, and this update brings along:
- Support for VSH patches and the ability to disable RIF signature checks
- RAP support for DLC and PS1 games was added
- Hitching of PlayStation 1 titles on mismatched TV video systems (PAL on NTSC for example) was fixed
- NPDRM Type 2 games are now loaded faster
- An issue in which users got stuck downloading games from PSN has been fixed
- Other minor updates, including the shrinking of Stage2, which can be viewed in the link below
- If you’re thinking about running PS3HEN on FW 4.85 (with HFW 4.85.1), it’s good to note that PS3HEN was updated to support FW 4.85 with version 2.3.2

Facebook functionality has been removed from PlayStation 4, although it is expected to only be a temporary measure.
The platform holder announced it removed integration with the social network yesterday, removing various functions of the PS4 with it.
PS4 users are currently unable to link their Facebook and PlayStation Network accounts, meaning they cannot search for import friends from the social network or use their profile picture. Posting gameplay, screenshots and trophy activity has also been suspended.
In the original post, Sony apologised for any inconvenience, although gave no explanation as to why the changes had been made.

Sony Interactive Entertainment's European branch has reportedly laid off "dozens" amid a multi-division restructuring.
GamesIndustry.biz sister-site Video Games Chronicle reports that affected divisions included marketing and PR, in addition to layoffs also occurring on the US creative services team, with at least one employee sharing their situation on Twitter. Some employees are being asked to re-interview for former positions.
This announcement was made to employees on the same day as a Wired report that shared new details on Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5, including its confirmed name and release window of holiday 2020. Some employees reportedly feel this is a sign of the growing influence of SIE America and the reduced influence of the EU side, with American executives coming to the EU to make the announcement and EU employees not being informed of the Wired article reveals at all.

October 9th, 2019, 21:08 Posted By: wraggster
It's official. PlayStation 5 is coming. It will be here in just over a year. Sony revealed it just this week to the world's media, with leading game developers celebrating its many advantages.
Well, not quite. It announced PS5 via a blog post and a placed article in Wired, just a few months after it first talked about the new console in a standalone Wired article.
Sony's understated approach to PR in 2019 has been in direct contrast to Microsoft, which has done nothing but talk, talk, talk, talk all year long. Whether it's about new consoles, streaming platforms, subscription services, games... even family settings. Microsoft has been leading the conversation, it has attended all the big shows, and has been sharing its vision in a coherent way. Microsoft has a plan and is happy to tell us all about it.
In a year where you'd expect Sony to be setting out its strategy for widening the gaming audience, it has acted conservatively. It is behaving more like a business worried about protecting its lead rather than extending it.
Sony's PR strategy is perhaps understandable when you consider the criticism it has faced from certain media, particularly around cross-play. There are already commentators proclaiming the return of 'arrogant Sony,' yet the counter to accusations of over-confidence is humility, not avoiding the conversation.
"The industry is looking at Sony to see what's next for the console business. At the moment, Xbox is the one providing all the answers" Of course, the ongoing company restructure at Sony isn't helping. PlayStation's old regional structure made it a complicated beast, but that made it popular in markets its competitors couldn't get near. The centralisation plan was to try and simplify things while maintaining the regional autonomy that has worked so well in the past. As of right now, it's not working.
There is no centralised clarity of vision, and regional teams have become frustrated by US oversight and sign-off procedures. It's perhaps no wonder senior names -- whether that's Shawn Layden or regional leads -- are using this opportunity to move on.
This uncertainty has reached the wider business. At the GamesIndustry.biz Investment Summit this year, one indie developer expressed fears that PlayStation "has stopped caring about indies." There's so much we don't know about what Sony is planning next. What are its third-party priorities? Is VR still a thing for it? Is PlayStation Now as significant to them as Game Pass is for Xbox?
It might be PlayStation doesn't quite have all the answers yet and isn't ready for the media scrutiny. Even so, it's not quite the confident showing you'd expect from the dominant platform holder.
I confess I was a bit reluctant to write this piece initially. None of this is especially new. From the moment Sony backed out of E3, it was clear the company was going into stealth mode ahead of PS5, and we're still over a year away from its launch. And restructures are almost always painful. The time to judge them is not in the middle of the transition, but at the end when the kinks have been worked out. Centralising PlayStation in a globalised games industry had to happen at some point.

A new PlayStation 4 firmware update is on the horizon. Releasing later this week is firmware 7.00, which will bring two new improvements to the table: remote play enhancements and larger Party groups. PS4 Remote Play will be usable on any Android device running 5.0 and higher, while the preexisting Remote Play App on iOS has gotten an update to allow for users to have onscreen controls displayed at all times. DualShock 4 controllers can officially connect to any mobile device running Android 10 or iOS 13. The Party function on PlayStation 4 will get an increase from a maximum number of 8 players to 16, while also receiving upgrades to both network and audio quality between communications online.
Party Feature Update
For PS4 fans who love to play alongside their friends or other community members, the Party feature has been rebuilt to include new features and services including:
- Maximum number of Party users increased from 8 to 16
- Network connectivity improved
- Audio quality improved
- Accessibility support with Chat Transcription has been added (US Only)
Within the Party feature, you will experience better network connectivity and audio quality. The improved back-end now improves network connectivity and allows users to overcome connectivity issues previously experienced when connecting with other users.
Lastly, the Party App will also offer a new Chat Transcription feature for US users via the PS4 Second Screen App on your smartphone or other mobile devices. The new feature supports US English and converts party voice chat to text, or enables you to enter text that is read aloud to other party members. If using your mobile device to connect to your PS4 during a Party, you will now see a new Party tab has been added where the new functionality is available.
Remote Play
For those who want to stream select PS4 games on mobile devices, Remote Play can now be used on smartphones and tablets running Android 5.0 or higher. Just download the PS4 Remote Play App from the Google Play store to use the feature.
Meanwhile, for iPhone or iPad users, the Remote Play App has been updated so you can now display the controller at all times and lock the screen orientation.
Also, players will be able to use their DualShock 4 wireless controllers via Bluetooth for Remote Play on an Android, iPhone, iPad, and Mac. All you need to do is update to Android 10, iOS 13, iPadOS 13, or macOS Catalina (releasing in October) to use this feature.
As a reminder, a PS4 system with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended.

October 4th, 2019, 22:30 Posted By: wraggster
Sony Interactive Entertainment has shown its commitment to game streaming by cutting the price of PlayStation Now in half.
Previously, PlayStation Now cost $19.99 a month in the US, but a new price cut has brought that down to $9.99. Other territories have a slightly less generous reduction; from £12.99 a month down to £8.99 in the UK, for example, and from €14.99 to €9.99 in much of Europe.
The value proposition of PlayStation Now has been further strengthened by the addition of what SIE is calling "marquee games" -- the kind of high-profile blockbusters that have not been a common sight on Sony's on-demand platform before now.
Marquee games will be available for three months at a time. The first wave is God of War, Grand Theft Auto V, inFamous Second Son and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, which will be available until January 2, 2020.

PlayStation has moved cross-play support out of beta, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment's Jim Ryan, theoretically making the feature available to all developers.
The change was included in a Wired story on PlayStation Now, which received a steep price-cut earlier this week. The article was based on an interview with SIE CEO Jim Ryan, and mentioned that the PS4 can now support cross-play "on any titles that studios provide the functionality for."
The article went live on the same day that PUBG Corp. confirmed cross-play between Xbox, PC and PlayStation 4.
While Wired's information came straight from the top of Sony, progress on cross-play has yet to be commented upon through the publisher's official channels.
This is characteristic of Sony's stance on cross-play to date. Initially reluctant to lower the walls around the PS4's captive audience, it relented in June 2018 following pressure related to Epic Games' Fortnite.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has started selling its console hardware and first-party games direct to consumers.
The new online store is only available to PlayStation's US customers at present, but it allows PS4 consoles, accessories and games to be purchased directly from the PlayStation.com website.
It is also possible to buy PlayStation VR headsets, accessories and games, and voucher codes for PS Plus subscriptions.
"This site not only provides our fans in the US with the option to purchase these items directly from PlayStation, but is also intended to help gift givers easily find the right product for their friends or family," SIE's Stephen Turvey in a statement.
"Fans will find that prices on the new store align with those found at other retailers."

the PSVita also received an English translation for Date-A-Live Twin Edition: Rio Reincarnation by froid_san who has created numerous English translations for the PSVita. This game, which is a visual novel, was released in Japan in 2015 as a PSVita exclusive and never got translated to English until PC and PS4 ports were released earlier this year. Now, froid_san has made the PSVita version accessible to English-speaking audiences and the English patch he just released includes:
- All text and images have been translated to English
- Vocal-less videos from the PC version have been merged with the video data of the PSVita’s version
As a result, the game is fully playable on the PSVita and the only minor things that didn’t get translated are trophies (PSN wouldn’t take too kindly to unknown trophies being synced), the game’s title on its save data and the digital manual.

During a livestream today, Call of Duty production manager Paul Haile outlined the details of Call of Duty's first foray into full cross-platform play in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
"The industry is hitting a tipping point where we really shouldn't be restricting people from playing with their friends because of platform choices," Haile said during a livestream offering details on the feature.
Modern Warfare will allow players across PS4, Xbox, and PC to play with one another in all game modes, so long as they have a Call of Duty account. This functionality will work both for parties of friends who have invited one another, as well as random match-ups.

The PlayStation 4 has now surpassed 30 million sales in the US.
That's according to Niko Partners' analyst Daniel Ahmad, who revealed the milestone via Twitter and noted that this means the US accounts for around 30% of all PS4 sales.
Ahmad added sales figures from other key markets for the PS4, including the 8.3 million units sold it its home region of Japan, 7.2 million in Germany and 6.8 million in the UK.
Sony has not released official sell-through figures since December 2018, when it revealed 91.6 million units had been sold worldwide.
However, recent financial reports show 100 million units have been shipped to stores around the world and Ahmad's tweet suggests the console is close to reaching this figure in sales.
