PlayStation and Facebook Gaming/Oculus will not be attending this year's Game Developers Conference due to concerns around the novel coronavirus COVID19.
It follows a series of cancelled or postponed video game events, plus console manufacturing disruption, caused by the outbreak. The virus has infected over 75,700 people so far, killing 2,130. The majority of cases have been in China, with just over 1,000 cases reported in other countries (including 15 in the US).
Facebook says that it is still planning to make announcements at GDC around its Oculus business, but will now do that via digital formats with 'video, online Q&As and more'. The firm says it is removing its booth footprint and advising all employees to refrain from travelling to the show.
"Out of concern for the health and safety of our employees, our dev partners, and the GDC community, Facebook will not be attending this year's Game Developer Conference due to the evolving public health risks related to COVID-19," a Facebook company spokesperson said. "We still plan to share the exciting announcements we had planned for the show through videos, online Q&As, and more, and will plan to host GDC partner meetings remotely in the coming weeks.
"We continue to collaborate with UBM, GDC's parent company, and our partners, and thank them for their efforts."

The PlayStation 5 will cost around $450 per unit to manufacture, according to inside sources.
Speaking with Bloomberg, people at Sony with knowledge of the matter said the cost of high-end components -- especially around heat dissipation -- had driven up production costs.
Console manufacturing is typically a narrow margin or loss-leading endeavour; the PS4 launched with a price point of $399 in 2013, and market intelligence firm IHS Markit estimates manufacturing costs were around $381 per unit.
Historically, console launch price has proven a delicate topic, as evidenced by the PS3 introductory price of $599, which Sony exec Shawn Layden later described as a "stark moment of hubris" after the record-breaking success of the PS2.
Microsoft made a similar misstep with the Xbox One, launching the console at $499 in 2013.
As Sony one again enters a new generation after having dominated the previous one, the platform holder finds itself in a delicate position when it comes to pricing -- one source said the Xbox retail price will be a deciding factor.

A recently filed patent from Sony uses machine learning to help players overcome in-game challenges by directing them towards digital storefronts.
Filed through the World Intellectual Property Organization, the "in-game resource surfacing platform" operates by assessing the current in-game state and then making suggestions accordingly.
It will search for and identify in-game resources based on contextual player data, and additional data from the game's community; from there, it will make suggestions for how the player can progress.
Some of these recommendations will point players towards digital storefronts where they can spend money on DLC or microtransactions.
The system also suggests in-game resources, identifying data from other players' successful attempts and presenting relevant solutions.
In the filing, Sony suggested this patent was a response to the growing number of games, and the increased competition to hold a player's attention; it said that appropriate guidance to help players progress in-game has "not kept pace" with this increase.
"There is thus a need and a benefit to develop and integrate an in-game platform to match players with those resources... both within the game in question as well as across a plurality of additional games the player participates in," reads the filing.
"There is moreover, a need and benefit for game publishers and virtual store platforms to be able to identify specific in-game resources that would complement the player in their gameplay and communicate the same to them."

PS4HEN is a homebrew enabler for FW 5.05 by SiSTR0 that offers a decent deal of functionality over just letting you run homebrew. Among this functionality, we find Rest Mode Support, Debug Settings, VR Support, Remote Package Install and some more which are pretty useful to many PlayStation 4 owners looking to get the most out of their console.
Recently, it was updated to version 2.1.2 and this version brings along:
- Support for external HDDs with firmware 7.xx format
- The spoofed firmware version is now 7.02 which is the latest firmware
- Support for Debug Trophies
- A patch for sys_dynlib_dlsym
- Together with version 2.1.2 Beta – some more games were fixed, Rest Mode now works better and Printf to UART has been removed

Now, another PlayStation 4 emulator is in the spotlight and this time, it’s Inori’s GPCS4 which has been in development for quite a while. Thanks to recent developments, its developer Inori updated its README to inform us that ‘We Are Doomed‘, a commercial title also runnable in Spine, is now in-game, can display graphics and is able to be played. However, it’s important to note that the frame rate is too low for the game to be considered playable as there are no graphical optimisations present but there are plans to implement these together with improved controller input handling.

With PlayStation 4 sales slowing, and the current console generation nearing its end, Sony is undoubtedly looking forward to the launch of the PlayStation 5, which is set for release late into this year. But, it seems Sony isn't quite ready to share their full plans and ideas with the public, just yet. They've gone ahead and launched the official PlayStation 5 part of their website, but it's pretty barebones, merely stating, "We've begun to share some of the incredible features you can expect from PlayStation 5, but we're not quite ready to fully unveil the next generation of PlayStation", and asking fans to sign up for their newsletter, in order to learn more, when the time finally comes for a full reveal of the system.

With this console generation drawing to a close, Sony's game business is on the decline as both revenue and income fall year-on-year.
According to the latest quarterly financial report (three months ending December 31, 2019), gaming revenue fell 20% year-on-year to ¥632 billion ($5.7 billion); income from gaming was similarly affected, falling 26% to ¥53 billion ($484 million)
Revenue was down in all sectors of Sony's gaming business save for network services which climbed 7% to ¥85 billion ($782 million)
Meanwhile, digital software and add-on content fell 13% year-over-year to ¥304,982 ($2.8 billion).
Hardware and packaged software took the biggest hit though, plummeting 30.5% year-over-year to $2 billion.
Looking at the nine months consolidated figures, the latest decline continues a steady trend downward for Sony.
According to those numbers, in the nine months ending December 31, 2019, Sony has seen revenue from games decline over 14% to ¥1,496 billion ($13.6 billion).
This is a trend reflected in Microsoft's latest financial report, which also noted a 21% decline in gaming revenue, while reporting that subscription figures were on the rise.
With Sony posting an increase in network services and a decline everywhere else, live services are the last dependable revenue stream as the next console generation looms.

The PlayStation Vita was meant to be the king of Remote Play for PlayStation, but things never really turned out the way they hoped, with the Vita being known more for its miserable sales and its status as a "legacy system" a handful of years after its launch. We could get another chance at experiencing Remote Play on a handheld, though, if a recent PlayStation survey has anything to say about it. Reportedly, a Reddit user found a survey being given out by Sony, which asked PlayStation fans what features they'd like to see in the future, regarding Remote Play. Some of these questions asked if being able to play classic PS1 and PS2 titles through remote play would be appealing, if a mini DualShock 4 meant for on-the-go playing would be of interest, or if people would want to use Remote Play on other entertainment devices, such as the Apple TV, Android TV, or even the Nintendo Switch. Whether or not we see Sony actually implement any of these ideas is dubious, but it does seem like they're looking towards the future when it comes to PlayStation 4's Remote Play, or the service in general.

Rinnegatamante has made another addition to the FPS homebrew game library for Sony’s current portable and this time, it’s vitaExhumed. As its name suggests, vitaExhumed is a port of PCExhumed by Duke4 Forum member ‘sirlemonhead’ which itself is a port of Exhumed/PowerSlave’s engine that’s based upon code from EDuke32. For those who never heard of the game, PowerSlave/Exhumed (Exhumed is the name used in Europe) is a first-person shooter based on the Build engine (i.e. Duke Nukem 3D’s engine) which is set in the ancient Egyptian city of Karnak. This city was seized by mysterious forces and your task is to find out what’s going on and potentially save the city; quite obviously, you’ll be roaming in ancient Egyptian temples and the enemies featured are from Egyptian mythology.
You may read more about vitaExhumed on its Wololo /talk page & download it via VitaDB; Rinnegatamante may be donated to via Patreon. It’s important to note that you need the data files for the full game to play it as the demo files aren’t compatible yet.

Finally after years of starts, stops etc, aishsha et al present to you a completed translation of Brave Prove for the PSX.
Brave Prove is an action-RPG in a similar vein as the Thor/Oasis series where you gather Elementals in your quest and save the world. It also features a combo system that is somewhat unique and more reminiscent of a fighting game or beat ‘em up. Give it a try, you might be surprised at how good it is.

Sony's PlayStation Vue TV service may be out this month, but never fear: YouTube TV is in.
Today, YouTube announced the app was being added to the PS Store for PS4, bringing over 70 live TV channels for $50 per month. The app has been available on Xbox One since 2017, and is not currently available on the Nintendo Switch (though the free YouTube app is).
This comes just over a week before Sony shuts down its own TV service, PS Vue, for good. The company announced it would be hitting the brakes back in October, citing the competitive nature of paid TV and the slow change of business models as factors. PS Vue stopped taking new subscribers some time ago, and will fully end for existing subscribers on January 30. Prior to its termination, the cheapest PS Vue plan was $50 per month for around 45 channels.
Currently, the Sony PS Vue page specifically recommends interested users to "please consider YouTube TV as a cable-free live TV alternative."

While VitaShell has been around for over 3 years now and has become the de facto file manager for the PSVita, it’s still receiving a limited amount of support and TheFlow has recently released VitaShell 2.01 and 2.02. These updates come with:
- Support for Firmware 3.57 & 3.73 thanks to work by RealYoti (2.01)
- The ability to refresh PSM games was added in version 2.01 but version 2.02 removed it due to it causing crashes
To grab VitaShell 2.02, simply open VitaShell on your PSVita while connected to WiFi and it’ll take care of updating for you. Alternatively, you grab the VPK from its GitHub Release Page which also contains the change log for 2.01/2.02. Moving over to homebrew games, dots-tb of Team CBPS has released yet another homebrew game port for the console and this time it’s an enhanced version of TailTale (Shippo no Puzzle).
From a brief testing session on my PSVita, the game seems to work pretty well and controls quite nicely!
This title, by rerofumi and pyonkey-matsuo, is a Tetris Attack-esque game that received ports to numerous platforms including the PSP, Dreamcast, Amiga OS 4.0, Dingoo, Wii and many others. Contrary to these ports, the PlayStation Vita port makes use of 13 rows like the original release of the game rather than 10/11 rows which was a limitation imposed on the PSP port carried over to all other ports.

To end the year on a good note, RealYoti has released a couple updates for some of TheFlow‘s work to fully support Firmware 3.72 and 3.73, two firmwares both supported by h-encore². The software that’s been updated includes:
- VitaShell 2.0 with full FW 3.73 support
- It’s unclear as to what ReralYoti’s work actually brings along but it seems to add some offsets to the ‘_shellKernelMountById’ and ‘module_start’ methods as per a commit.
- VitaShell 2.0 officially supports FW 3.72
- Download Enabler with FW 3.72 and 3.73 support as it was broken on these according to user reports
- NoLockScreen with FW 3.72 and 3.73 support
- NoTrophyMsg with FW 3.72 and 3.73 support
- *UPDATE: Usbmc with FW 3.69-3.73 support by theHeroGAC
- *UPDATE: Gamecard to microSD adapter (gamesd) with FW 3.73 by theHeroGAC
It’s important to state that it’s generally not recommended to stay on FW 3.72/3 due to h-encore²’s low success rate and lack of homebrew/plugin support so if you’re on those firmwares, you should probably downgrade via Modoru to FW 3.60/5 if your console supports it which also grants you hacks at start-up or FW 3.68 if it doesn’t.

This WebKit exploit, which is based upon a JavaScript vulnerability found as part of Project Zero in 2018, works on Firmwares 6.00-6.72 with Fire30 noting that Sony patched it in Firmware 7.00 meaning that the latest firmware isn’t vulnerable to it.
What does a WebKit exploit mean?
While FW 6.20 has had a public WebKit exploit for a while, a public kernel exploit is needed for a full hacking solution
While the release of a WebKit is exploit, it’s important to keep in mind the following:
- WebKit exploits don’t equate to anything tangible like a full/partial hacking solution to the end-user
- However, they are useful to developers as entry points in the initial steps of an exploit chain
- A kernel exploit is required in order to get the things currently available on FW 5.05/7 or lower
- It’s important to note that FW 6.00-6.20 have had a public WebKit exploit, by SpecterDev, since March and not much came out of that when it comes to end-user functionality
As a result, it’s important to keep in mind that this exploit will not suffice for a full hacking solution but it does give some hope for future PlayStation 4 hacking developments as some interest is still there.
