Hacker Vultra has shared a proof of concept of a semi-recent webkit vulnerability, which seems to impact the latest PS4 firmware 6.02.
More precisely, the bug impacts recent versions of the Webkit engine on PS4 6.00 and above, up to the 6.10 Beta. Firmwares 5.xx and below are apparently not vulnerable, possibly because their version of Webkit doesn’t have the vulnerable function.
The vulnerability itself (a bug in JSC::arrayProtoPrivateFuncConcatMemcpy) was first detailed on externalist’s github about 4 months ago. It is assigned CVE Number CVE-2018-4538, and another detailed writeup (from September) on the vulnerability and how it is exploitable in Safari can be found here.
The vulnerability has been fixed in Webkit several months ago, but it seems the patch might not have made it to the PS4 yet.
There is no doubt that Sony will ultimately bring the fix to their Webkit implementation. Additionally, user exploits such as webkit exploits are historically not useful “as is” on modern consoles*, where they are typically just used as entry points for privilege escalation (kernel exploits or Jailbreaks). Therefore, the chances of this becoming more than a proof of concept are very slim.
With that being said, if you are running on PS4 6.00 or above, you can give a try to the proof of concept by pointing your PS4 browser to https://c0rpvultra.github.io/PS4_jsc_ConcatMemcpy_POC/.

Zecoxao has announced that a “method” for “games” is coming soon for PS4 6.02.
Although the tweets are pretty ambiguous, reading between the lines we can assume he is talking about a method to pirate games on the latest firmware.
Specifically, Zecoxao has precised that this is not a hack, rather a “method”, and that once it is disclosed, Sony will patch it. He’s also clarified that this will only be useful for games, which I interpret as: “you’ll get piracy, not homebrew”.
Sometimes the most clever techniques to run unsigned code on Sony’s consoles have emerged from “glitches” that were barely considered as hacks, and this could become one of those.

Sony have just released firmware update 6.20 for the PS4, which was a bit surprising given that 6.10 was the next update to be expected after going through extensive beta in November.
As always for these minor updates, the changelog is intentionally vague and simply states that “This system software update improves system performance”. In other words, this could be anything from a minor patch for some specific game, to some critical vulnerability fix.
Should I update my PS4 to 6.20?
You know the drill: if you expect your PS4 to be hacked, we usually don’t recommend you update your console.
In particular, this update comes as 3 different “exploits” have been recently announced for the PS4 (although none of them confirmed to be a massive game changer at this point). Zecoxao’s upcoming “super secret method” in particular, seems to specifically target firmware 6.02, and there is no word at this point whether it works on the latest firmware 6.20 or not.

Yifan Lu and madmonkey1907 managed to dump the PlayStation Classic MTK boot ROM via serial interface and then realized the key Sony used to encrypt areas of the system was the shared public key as opposed to using a private key kept secret as it should be in this case. In other words Sony failed to secure the device by mistakes in the encryption signing process, and it's not the first time that happens. You can use this search to find the related releases so far in the download section for this hack. News spread around quickly on Twitter so mainstream outlets like arstechnica.com and hackaday.com picked up the story. Thanks goes to GaryOPA for letting me know about the BleemSync tool.

Next month's PlayStation Plus lineup has been revealed. Those who subscribe to the service will be getting six new games to play for free, with December's headline titles being SOMA and Onrush. For PlayStation 3 players, you'll have access to Steins;Gate and Steredenn, while those that still have a PlayStation Vita will get Iconoclasts (PS4 Crossplay) and Papers, Please. SOMA is known for its mix of sci-fi and horror elements while Onrush is an entirely different experience, being an over-the-top arcade racer.
It's also worth noting that by March 2019, both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita titles will no longer be included as part of a PlayStation Plus membership.
You can start playing these games on December 4th.

Team PS4NoBd, led by developer CelesteBlue, have released PS4Brew 4.74, a port of the 5.05 Jailbreak, for firmware 4.74. The hacker credits a huge chunk of the work to famous PS4 developer SpecterDev (4.74 JOP chain + ROP Kdumper), as well as from Zecoxao (code + 4.74 patches implementation).
If you’re familiar with the PS4 scene, you already know that the latest exploitable firmware is firmware 5.05. In general, at this point we recommend users on a firmware below that to simply upgrade to 5.05, and Jailbreak the PS4 from there.
But it turns out that folks with a broken BluRay drive cannot upgrade past their current firmware (in this case, 4.74). Error code CE-35888-2 has been mentioned as one of the errors you can get that indicates a broken (or improperly “married”) Blu Ray drive.
PS4Brew 4.74 is therefore here to help these folks enjoy the kernel exploit nonetheless.
If you are on an already hackable firmware such as 4.55, or 5.05, CelesteBlue recommends staying on your current firmware.
The hacker also hinted at more features to come for people with BD drive issues.
If you have a 4.74 PS4 with a broken BD drive that’s preventing you from upgrading, you can now Jailbreak your console: point your PS4’s browser to http://celesteblue.nopsn.com/PS4/474/ or to http://www.pearlxcore.net/ and you’ll run the exploit. As to how to use the exploit once it’s loaded, you can check details on our PS4 Jailbreak page.
Sources will follow shortly, according to CelesteBlue.
Please note that I do not have a PS4 running 4.74 and I haven’t tested this release.

UniPCEmu, by ‘Superfury’, is an x86 emulator that was originally made for the PSP but later on, it got ported to Windows and Android. This emulator apparently lets you emulate a whole slew of different hardware configurations, from an IBM PC with an 8086 to a Compaq Deskpro 386 with an 80486.
UniPCEmu has a whole slew of options you can fiddle with it but it’s a little complex to set up!
Unlike the other two pieces of homebrew mentioned in this article, there isn’t much of a story relating to the PSP version but I could come up with the following conclusions after loading it up on my PSVita:
- It has a whole slew of options to configure which hints that it values compatibility and accuracy over other emulators
- The menu is similar to that found in DaedalusX64 with the L/R triggers to navigate between pages
- The EBOOT takes a long time to load but it eventually works
- According to its developer, performance isn’t the best but you should try it anyway if you want to play some old DOS games on your PSP
For more information, check out the website linked above or its Wololo /talk thread.

If you were around a couple of years ago, then you may have head of a homebrew called CyanogenPSP. This homebrew provided your PSP with an Android-esque interface and it had numerous features including:
- A launcher for homebrew, PS1 games and PSP games
- A picture viewer and music playerCMFileManager PSP is probably the best PSP file manager out there even though it’s a little late to the game
- Support for custom wallpapers and fonts among other features
While it included a lot of features and looked quite nice, its developer, Joel16, says that its code was quite a mess and the file manager barely worked. To ‘remedy’ this, he decided to give the PSP scene one final contribution and that was the release of CMFileManagerPSP which, obviously, contains much better coding than CyanogenPSP as Joel16 has learned a lot during his Computer Engineering course.
CMFileManagerPSP looks very similar to NXShell and provides the following features:
- Ability to copy/move/paste/delete and rename files and folders. You may also create folders
- Option to browse flash0 and flash1 although you should be careful not to mess around with anything here unless you know what you’re doing
- An image viewer (which didn’t work properly on the images I tried)
- A dark theme although I prefer the lighter one
- It can launch ISOs and homebrew
- Many other features including auto USB mounting and a nice looking status bar
To grab CMFileManagerPSP, follow this link to its Wololo /talk page. If you had already downloaded it a short while back, note that version 1.01 was made available a week ago!

Sometime in 2016/7, an anonymous user on 4chan apparently worked on porting Hydra Castle Labyrinth to the Nintendo 3DS. Then, in March 2017, a GBATemp found this user’s work and brought it some visibility. Shortly after, the 3DS’ port source code was uploaded to GitHub and it turned out that it contained a nearly complete PSP port!
Hydra Castle Labyrinth for the PSP works quite well and it’s on-par with the PSVita port!
Fast forwarding a little under a year, in February 2018, Wololo /talk user “carstene1ns”, with the help “ptitSeb”, was able to polish up and fix up the PSP port enough so that it could enjoy by the public. I personally tested it on my PSVita via Adrenaline and these are my observations:
- Sound and music work
- Performance is quite good and I didn’t notice any stutters in my short play session
- Both the d-pad and the analogue stick can be used for movement
- There’s an option to use 1:1 scaling, to fill the screen while keeping the game’s aspect ratio (4:3) and to stretch the game to 16:9
- There’s a blur mode which you can enable for smoother graphics
To get this homebrew game, follow this link to its Wololo /talk thread. If you have a PSVita, you can get a native port of HCL for it via VHBB.

We are closing in fast to the end of our current console cycle, and rumors are flying around fast these days, first with a possible Switch Pro in March 2019, and now more recently Microsoft rumored to be launching an disc-less Xbox One in Spring 2019, and today the news was announced that now Sony besides not doing their own PSX event this holiday season in 2018 they are now will be also skipping the E3 in 2019, which means come December 2019 we could see an special PSX event just for launching their PS5.
With the PS4 turning five this year, it's safe to say that Sony's PS5 is in active development. More so when you consider that development kits for the console are already out in the wild.
"As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community," said Sony in a statement. "PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can't wait to share our plans with you."
And while Sony won't have its own event around or during E3 like EA tends to do, some speculate that it's to focus on the PS5.
"Based on conversations with developers across the industry, I expect the PlayStation 5 to be released in 2020, and the publisher skipping E3 2019 certainly points to that," claims Kotaku's Jason Schreier who has a solid track record when it comes to industry happenings of the more nebulous variety, such as a yet to be announced console.
The PS5 may have a 2020 release date and it will be using AMD's Navi GPU. Previously it was suggested that the PS5 would also be using AMD's Ryzen CPU tech and it seems that AMD will have a hand in the PS5's GPU as well. This is according to a report from WCCFtech citing "sources intimately familiar with the entire situation". In addition to letting slip when we could expect the PS5, it delves deeper into the reasoning for AMD not announcing a new GPU at Computex 2018 - it has found the custom-applications space more lucrative.

November 26th, 2018, 16:20 Posted By: wraggster
Sony has found itself under investigation in Turkey this week following complaints that certain games on the PS Store were priced far too high, particularly in the wake of the country's current high inflation and the Turkish lira's lowering value against the dollar.
The Turkish edition of our sister site VG247 has reported the investigation, which appears (via Google Translate) to be concerned with the high prices on certain games sold on the PS Store. Though many games on the store appear to be valued similarly in lira as they do in USD, others appear to have their base prices far higher.
For example, Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently selling for 469,00 TL, or about $88. Other games around that price include Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, FIFA 19, Spider-Man, NBA 2K19, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, NHL 19, and WWE 2K19. However, it is worth noting that all of these games with the exception of Red Dead Redemption 2 were currently on sale at the time of this piece, with discounted costs ranging from 328,80 TL ($61) for Call of Duty all the way down to 159,00 TL ($30) for Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Fail0verflow have published a new blog article yesterday, in which they describe a novel way to gain code execution on the PS4. Developer ps4_enthusiast, who is behind the writeup, states the exploit is a way to “gain EMC code exec on any hardware revision.” (EMC is part of the PS4 Southbridge, see below). This could be bringing the hope of an upcoming hack to anyone who has been running on a recent firmware. 5.05/5.07 are currently the latest publicly hackable firmwares.
As often, the post is in-depth enough that people motivated to reproduce Fail0verflow’s steps should be able to do so, but complicated enough that for the end user, this will not instantly be useful. At all, except for hope as mentioned above.
The exploit involves feeding bogus data to the HDMI port of the console (by exploiting bugs in the CEC interface on the PS4 – CEC is the bit of HDMI protocol magic that lets you turn your TV instantly when you switch the PS4 on, and vice versa) in order to trigger a bug that will let you overwrite data in the PS4’s Southbridge (known as Aeolia or Belize depending on the hardware revision) and get code execution from there.
Sounds complicated? That’s because it probably is, and the overall process currently seems to involve lots of software and hardware hacks. (Picture below is part of the actual setup used by Fail0verflow).

Many PlayStation 4 Pro owners have shared a similar gripe about their console and this was the excessive noise the console made when under heavy load. To amend this problem, Sony released the CUH-7100 model last year; but now it’s released a new PS4 Pro model, with number CUH-7200, to reduce fan noise even further!
The PlayStation 4 Pro model CUH-7200 is a pretty minor revision but it brings along an important improvement over previous PS4 Pro models.
This improvement is a reduction in fan noise by about ~6-7dB over the launch model and a few decibels over the CUH-7100 model. Other than that, this new PS4 Pro model also comes with the figure-of-8 power connector, like the CUH-711B model, which replaces the previous 2-pin PC-like power connector that original PS4 Pro models came with.

For quite a while, Battle Royale games have been the latest fad and now, the folks at behind PUBG are bringing their game to the PlayStation 4!
What is PUBG?
PUBG is a Battle Royale game, by PUBG Corporation in South Korea, that’s the main competitor to Fortnite (even though it was available months before it via Steam Early Access).
As with most battle royale games, you land into a pretty large game area that, in PUBG’s case, has a total of 100 players.
In this area, you have find weapons and armour in order to aid your survival and to win, you have to be the last player standing!

Classic and mini versions of retro game systems have become popular to release onto the market, including the recently announced PlayStation Classic. With a very basic UI, and the chosen lineup of 20 games, many fans were disappointed and claimed that Sony's attempt at a plug and play throwback console was low effort. Complaints only furthered when it was revealed that Sony wasn't creating or reusing their own PlayStation 1 emulator for the Classic, like they had done with the PSP's POPS emulator, or with the PSP emulator that was found within the PlayStation 4 remaster of Parappa, or the emulated PlayStation 2 classic titles on the PlayStation 4 as well. Instead, Sony has opted use an emulator made by the public: PCSX ReARMed. At an event showing off the upcoming hardware, previewers were able to try out the PlayStation Classic, and found a menu listing stating that it uses open-source software, including PCSX ReARMed.

There's been some speculation about Netflix-style game subscription services as the future of the industry, but they're making a considerable impact on the present as well. According to a new report from industry research group Superdata, the leading subscription services combined to bring in about $273 million in revenue during the third quarter of the year.
The group determined that most of that revenue (52%) was accounted for by Sony's PlayStation Now service, which it said brought in $143 million for the quarter. EA's collection of PC and console services--EA Access, Origin Access, and Origin Access Premier--combined to bring in about $90 million, with a little over half of that coming from EA Access and the Origin offerings splitting the remainder. Interestingly, the new Premier tier of Origin Access brought in slightly more than the basic Origin Access tier, even though it was only launched partway through the quarter. Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass brought up the rear among the major offerings with roughly $41 million in revenue, a little less than EA Access but more than either of the Origin programs.
Although these services together combined for just 6% of overall non-free-to-play console and PC revenue for the quarter, Superdata noted that consumers of other media have already shown a pronounced shift toward getting their entertainment through subscriptions. It said that in the US, 74% of people who spend on digital video do it through services like Netflix and Hulu instead of purchasing the shows and movies they want a la carte. For music, 64% of digital customers have subscriptions for services like Spotify or Apple Music, compared to 51% who buy their music directly from storefronts like iTunes.
Unlike those other forms of media, games also have the advantage of selling add-on content to users of subscription services, and Superdata found subscribers more willing to do so. On average, subscribers to game services spend $25 a month on in-game content, compared to $10 for non-subscribers. And even with the subscriptions, those users are spending $57 a month on full game purchases, compared to the non-subscriber average of $39.

PlayStation owners who happen to be residents of Chicago will soon be paying an additional tax on services such as PlayStation Vue, Music, Plus, and others as Sony complies with the city's 9% Amusement Tax.
GamesIndustry.biz sister-site USGamer reports that PlayStation users with billing addresses in the city of Chicago are seeing notifications that the 9% Amusement Tax will begin to apply to purchases from PlayStationPlus, Now, Vue, Music, Video On Demand, and Video Live Events starting November 14 of this year.
This tax was extended to apply to services like Sony's due to a 2015 clarification of an existing tax on recreational activities. The expanded definition applied the tax to streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify.
Some companies such as Apple have since been fighting the ruling, saying it violates the Internet Tax Freedom Act - a 1998 law prohibits states and local governments from collecting Internet-only taxes or discriminatory taxes on e-commerce.
