Now, the PlayStation Vita’s port of Quake III, VitaQuake III by Rinnegatamante, has received a pretty substantial update which continues to improve upon the already enjoyable homebrew port. This update, with version number 0.9 brings along:
- Experimental support for Urban Terror – this is a free multiplayer FPS game based on the Quake III arena engine that falls into the tactical shooter genre
- A significant performance boost thanks to the addition of dynamic library support to OpenArena’s core
- The graphics renderer received some optimisations which improve both speed and memory usage
- A downloader for data files has been added for when game files aren’t found
- Loading mods & missionpacks from inside the game itself now works properly
- Background rendering is now enabled on the main menu
- Various bug fixes and minor improvements including the addition of a condition that prevents the screen from turning off on its own in certain situations
Lolicopocalypse on the PSVita works pretty well although the game is typical not a run-of-the-mill title (Screenshot from own testing)
You may read more about VitaQuake III, check its Wololo /talk page and you may download it from VitaDB directly on your device via VHBB.
Moving onto a newly released port, dots-tb and teakhanirons of Team CBPS have come up with yet another release for the PSVita and this time it’s a port of game called Lolicopocalypse which has seen ports on the Wii, GP2X and even TI Calculators. This game, by quasist, is a roguelike title and has a creepy-feeling atmosphere so if wanna try out something a little unusual, it may be worth your while to give it a go.

PlayStation does not need to go to E3.
There's no need for Sony to travel to Los Angeles to speak to retailers about its next console. There are far fewer stores to speak to these days, and let's be clear, they're all going to stock the PlayStation 5.
As a media event E3 is a powerful beast, with the world's press descending on Los Angeles that week. But this is PlayStation we're talking about. It's one of the most important brands in entertainment. Wherever the firm decides to show off the PS5, the media will be there to see it.
Not that it necessarily needs the media. There are over 100 million PS4 customers in the world, and 39 million of them are paying subscribers to PS Plus. This is an audience Sony can talk to directly whenever it wants. And they're already very engaged. Only last week PlayStation showed the PS5 logo -- pretty much the same as the PS4 logo -- and it has received over five million likes on Instagram.
Sony can drum up plenty of hype and excitement about its next console without spending huge sums on E3.
It might seem unusual that a major upcoming console misses E3, but it's not without precedent. In fact, the last significant console launch -- Nintendo Switch -- didn't reach E3 until after it had been released. And that machine has gone on to perform very well indeed.

In the games industry, when something works, you do it again and again until it stops working. And sometimes you keep doing it even then.
With more than 100 million PS4s sold and a commanding lead over the Xbox One from start to finish this generation, it's fair to say that Sony's marketing plan for the system's launch worked, which is part of what makes Sony's announcement this week that it would be skipping E3 2020 so shocking.
While not entirely unprecedented -- Sony did skip E3 last year as well, after all -- this still represents a massive departure from what worked for the company heading into its last console launch, when the PS4 debuted directly opposite the Xbox One and soundly trounced the competition.
In fact, E3 2013 was perhaps Sony's single most impactful moment in the lead-up to the PlayStation 4 launch. The week before E3, Microsoft confirmed that Xbox One would require an online connection and give publishers the option to disallow second-hand sales of retail games by tying the disc to the first Xbox One that plays it, a massive anti-consumer shift away from the status quo. When Microsoft's press briefing came and went without that elephant being forcibly ejected from the room, Sony took advantage during its own press briefing the next day.

Just as they did last year, Sony will not be making an appearance at this year's E3. Despite the imminent launch of the PlayStation 5 at the end of 2020, Sony believes that, "[they] do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year". This will be the first E3 in which Sony doesn't show off their new console, with the reveal of all previous PlayStation systems having taken place during the event, in years prior.
We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.
Click to expand... Rather than focus on E3, Sony plans on marketing the PS5 at consumer shows, where fans can be more directly involved, rather than E3, which has always leaned more towards the gaming industry itself. This means that PlayStation games will not be revealed at E3, nor will any first party PlayStation content be available to demo on the show floor in Los Angeles this summer.

January 14th, 2020, 17:44 Posted By: wraggster
Sony Interactive Entertainment's president and CEO Jim Ryan has teased that PlayStation 5 will have more "unique elements" that distinguish it from the firm's current console.
So far the details released about the upcoming device have been largely incremental improvements on the PlayStation 4's technology, such as 8K support and USB-C powered controllers with 'adaptive triggers.'
There have also been efforts to assure a smooth transition for PS4 owners, such as backwards compatibility, and to calm retail fears of a digital-only console, with Sony stating PlayStation 5 will use 100GB optical discs.
Perhaps the most exciting feature announced is the replacement of the hard drive with a solid-state drive, which will result in much faster loading times.
In an interview with Business Insider Japan, translated by Gematsu, Ryan promised there was a lot more to come and that Sony is all too aware its next console needs major selling points to encourage people to upgrade from the PS4.
"Each time a new console is released, the processor and graphics improve," he said. "Those are enticing of course, but we need to have special appeals as well. We have already confirmed the use of an solid-state drive. Having load times that are next to nothing is a major change.
"3D audio and the haptic feedback support of the controller are also things that, when you try them, you will be surprised at how big a change they are. Even just playing the racing game Gran Turismo Sport with a PlayStation 5 controller is a completely different experience. While it runs well with the previous controller, there is no going back after you experience the detailed road surface via haptic control and play using the adaptive triggers.
"But you know. There are still more unique elements for PlayStation 5 to come that separate it from previous consoles. The 'bigger differences' have yet to be announced."
Ryan was also drawn into a discussion about the Japanese launch. While he could not comment on timings or launch markets, he acknowledged that the fact Sony's home market had to wait an additional three months for the PlayStation 4 to launch was less than optimal, hinting that the same strategy won't be repeated.
"[That] was a decision I that I was deeply involved in. There was reasonable ground for that decision, but these days I do not think that was a good idea. It was a decision made after much debate, but there may have been other options."

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Grand Theft Auto V were 2019's biggest sellers on the PlayStation Store in the US and Europe respectively.
Both the US and European PlayStation blogs have revealed the rankings for the most downloaded PS4 games via the platform's digital store, as well as top sellers in other categories.
While a lot of titles appear in both lists, there are several differences that hint at varying tastes between the two continents.
Firstly, there are the obvious sporting differences, with two FIFA titles appearing on the European chart (with FIFA 20 at No.2) but none to be seen in the US rankings. Conversely, NBA 2K20 was the biggest sports game in the US at No.3, with Madden 20 at No.7 and MLB at No.13 -- none of which appear in the European charts.
There are less predictable differences, such as Borderlands 3's absence from the European chart or Crash Team Racing's non-appearance on the US'. America also seems to be home to more Star Wars fans, since both Battlefront II and Jedi: Fallen Order ranked higher than over on the other side of the Atlantic.
PlayStation also revealed the best-selling PSVR games, with Beat Saber taking the top spot on both charts. Europe's second biggest virtual reality title was the UK-developed Blood & Truth, while the US favoured indie hit Superhot VR.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. That's the motto that Sony has going into the next console generation, or at least, in regards to the marketing for it. CES 2020 is currently underway, showing off all the upcoming hardware for the ensuing year, including game consoles. Sony's CES 2020 media event kept details to a minimum, choosing to instead go over information already previously announced, such as the system's ultra-fast SSD, 3D audio, and ray-tracing among them. What was new to the briefing, was the first official usage of the PlayStation 5's logo, which looks exactly the same as the PlayStation logos before it. Just like the PlayStation 3 and 4 logos, the PlayStation 5 is simplified down to "PS5" on a flat colored background, in the iconic font, along with a PlayStation symbol appearing before it. The PlayStation 5 is still projected for a holiday 2020 release.
Additionally, during the media event, Sony revealed that PlayStation 4 sales have reached 106 million units worldwide, shifting around 3.5 million consoles during the holiday season. Meanwhile, PlayStation VR surpassed 5 million headsets sold. We also now have the total sales of combined physical and digital PlayStation 4 games, which is 1.15 billion games sold, across the PlayStation Network and retailers around the globe.

January 8th, 2020, 18:44 Posted By: wraggster
It's rare for a company to have such a strong entry into the games market as Sony did with the original PlayStation. What started as a collaborative project with Nintendo in the late '80s soon turned into its own product, taking the market by storm in 1994 in Japan and much of the rest of the world the following year. In March 1999, Sony told investors that it had shipped 54.42 million consoles, a figure that went north of 70 million over the following 12 months.
But the people heading up Sony's brand new video game venture knew that it wasn't enough to just do well the once -- you needed to land another smash hit in the bag before you could consider yourself successful. Going into the PlayStation 2's launch, there was a degree of trepidation among Sony's leaders, all of whom had been in the industry for a while and knew what a fickle beast it could be.
"It was always in the back of my mind," says Chris Deering, who was Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) Europe's boss at the time. "If PlayStation was ever successful, the real proof would be to have the follow up come out and do as well or maybe better."
"We were cautious because it was very rare that the leader of one generation could hold that position in the next"
Jack Tretton Jack Tretton, who was heading up SCE US, adds: "Everybody was euphoric coming off the success of PlayStation. We had set the bar high but it really exceeded our expectations. Going into PlayStation 2, we were certainly confident, but we were also cautious because it was very rare that the leader of one generation could hold that position in the next. There was a great deal of trepidation not to get caught up in our success and to make sure that we redoubled our efforts going into the next generation."
The original PlayStation had been targeted towards a broad audience. There was promotion aimed at bringing kids on board, like the goofy and colourful Society Against PlayStation commercials, as well as marketing like the rather gruesome print ad featuring two women with bleeding noses for WipEout. For the PS2, however, SCE wanted to bring in a more mature audience. This was part of the reason why Twin Peaks creator David Lynch was hired to make the unsurprisingly bizarre The Third Place trailer.

It’s not just a new year, but a new month as well, meaning it’s time to collect the new games for subscription services. For PlayStation Plus users, they’ll get two new PS4 games in January.
The first of which is Goat Simulator, which released to big laughs in 2014, letting gamers live out their dream of playing as a goat, running around and messing with objects and bouncing on trampolines, as goats tend to do.
The second PS+ game for January is multiple games in one, in the form of the Nathan Drake Collection, which bundles remastered versions of the first three Uncharted games.
You’ll be able to grab these games starting on January 7th, until February 3rd. Until then, make sure to get December’s games while you still can!

PlayStation 5 isn't the only new hardware coming from Sony in 2020. The company today announced that next month will see the release of the DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment.
As the name suggests, the Back Button Attachment plugs into the bottom of the PlayStation 4's DualShock controller and adds rear-facing buttons for players who prefer that control style. The attachment includes two buttons that can be individually mapped to 16 different DualShock 4 inputs, with an integrated OLED screen providing an interface for the button assigning process.
The plug-in peripheral allows users to save three different profiles to toggle between. And because the attachment covers the controller's standard headset jack, it also includes a pass-through stereo headset jack.
The Back Button Attachment launches in North America on January 23 for $30 ($40 CAD). A European launch will follow February 14 with a €30 price point.

PSVshell, by Electry, is a kernel-mode plugin for the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV which is currently compatible with firmware 3.60 and 3.65.
With PSVshell, you can set core frequencies in LiveArea and every other application with a very high degree of compatibility!
Similar to PSV VSH Menu and LOLIcon, this plugin is an overclocking plugin but it aims to provide a highly polished experience that includes a nice GUI and a high degree of compatibility.
This plugin comes with many useful features which include:
- Obviously, it allows you to overclock every aspect of the PSVita including the CPU, GPU (ES4), BUS and XBAR
- Like LOLIcon, you can overclock your PSVita’s CPU to 500MHz (494MHz in reality) which provides a small but noticeable boost over the 444MHz frequency that the PSVita can officially run at
- Unlike LOLIcon, it doesn’t allow you to set your GPU frequency to 333MHz as it only seems to differ from the normal 222MHz mode in regards to stuff relating to the Vita’s codec engine rather than actual GPU cores thus no performance difference is noticed in gamesPSVshell also supports HUD mode which provides real-time statistics on how your system is doing performance-wise
- It comes with a pretty nice dark-mode UI rather than the console text-style UI of similar plugins
- Other than being nice to use, it also lets you modify clock frequencies with a few button presses and save profiles
- You can also see per-core CPU usage, peak load and some other statistics
- Unlike other overclocking plugins, PSVshell is a kernel-mode plugin so it works in LiveArea
- App-specific profiles are supported
- Games aren’t slowed down when you’re using the clock frequency menu and Adrenaline is supported
- 3 different UI modes which include ‘FPS Counter Mode (Top-Right)’, ‘HUD Mode’ (shows usage statistics & frame rate) and ‘FULL Mode’ (shows you the clock frequency menu)
From a brief testing session, I can personally confirm that the plugin works pretty well with the browser, LiveArea, Age Of Zombies and Fruit Ninja functioning without any hiccups.
To get PSVshell on your PSVita, you have to:
- Download the plugin from its GitHub Release Page
- Copy it over to ux0:/tai/ or ur0:/tai/
- Open your taiHEN config.txt and add its path under the *KERNEL section (example: ‘ux0:tai/PSVshell.skprx’)
- Reboot your PSVita and enjoy overclocking without any major issues!

PlayStation Japan recently uploaded a video that was intended to highlight some of the biggest releases for the PlayStation 4 this holiday season, but it seems there was more to the music video than first thought. The video featured titles like Death Stranding, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and others, accompanied by clips of animation under the direction of Kevin Bao. These bits of animation are what sparked the controversy, as other artists began to notice that the video used exact animations from other pieces of work from anime and cartoons, such as FLCL, Steven Universe, and Souviens Ten-Zan. A Twitter post below, from Catsuka, shows the exact moments and compares them with what the pieces assumedly originated from.

Sony has pulled a PS4 Lineup promotional video from its channels following accusations that the video's animation plagiarized multiple other properties and creators.
Though the video has since been taken down, a backup not uploaded by Sony can still be viewed . Additionally, animation website Catsuka has tweeted a side-by-side comparison of the original video and the animations it appears to copy:
