It's a good time to be a fan of the Disney-Enix crossover gloop that is Kingdom Hearts: HD 1.5 Remix is out, HD 2.5 Remix comes to PS3 next year, and then there's the small matter of Kingdom Hearts 3 for Xbox One and PS4.
Yet there's one piece missing from the series' HD puzzle. The second compilation features Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix, Birth by Sleep Final Mix, and remastered cinematics from DS entry Re:coded, and HD 1.5 Remix coversKingdom Hearts Final Mix, Re:Chain of Memories and 358/2 Days, but that still leaves one major entry unaccounted for: last year's 3DS game, Dream Drop Distance.
The matter hasn't escaped the mind of series director Tetsuya Nomura, who told Famitsu (via Kotaku) it's something he feels Square Enix needs to consider.
"The HD remastered games are a summary leading up to Kingdom Hearts 3,"Nomura said. "It'd be sad for one chapter not to be in HD in remaking the series, plus Kingdom Hearts 3D is a necessary piece for telling the story ofKingdom Hearts 3, so I've been telling myself that we need to start considering it."
Of course, its HD-ified inclusion could be anything; it could be reduced to remastered cinematics, or get its own fully-fledged console port. It's hard to predict the future for a series that's prepared to name a game 358/2 Days - orHD 2.5 Remix for that matter.

The January freebies for PlayStation Plus have just been revealed and it's quite the eclectic mix. Next week, PS4 owners will be able to partake in Klei's survival simulator Don't Starve, a game about scrounging for supplies and surviving forjust one more night in a hostile environment.

BioShock Infinite, which takes place in the floating city of Columbia during 1912, is the latest first-person opus from Ken Levine and Irrational Games, while DmC: Devil May Cryis Ninja Theory's reboot of Capcom's devil hunter action series. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, the story of two young brothers on a quest to obtain medicine for their sick father, is from Starbreeze Studios.
Finally, rounding out next month's downloads are two PS Vita offerings: Smart As... and Worms: Battle Islands. The former is a brain training game while the latter is another entry in Team17's long-running Worms franchise.

Japanese developer Moss announced that it will port its arcade-style shoot-'em-ups Caladrius and Raiden 4 to the PlayStation 3 next year, following up on previous releases for the Xbox 360.
The PlayStation 3 version of Raiden 4, titled Raiden 4: Overkill, will boast a new gameplay mode when it premieres digitally via PSN this spring. Caladrius will make its PlayStation 3 debut later in 2014 with an additional stage and a new character not featured in the Xbox 360 release.
While Raiden 4 saw a limited edition North American retail launch in 2009 courtesy of niche publisher UFO Interactive, Caladrius has remained a Japanese exclusive since its debut in April of this year. The PlayStation 3 versions of Raiden 4 and Caladrius have not been announced for overseas release.

PlayStation 4 was Google’s most-searched for gadget in the US this year.
The Escapist points to Google’s updated top search charts, which show Sony’s new console on top of the search browser’s Tech Gadgets category.
Microsoft’s Xbox One, conversely, failed to crack the category’s top 10.
Interestingly, the PS4 comes in third in the worldwide Consumer Electronics category, while the Xbox One is right there in fourth.
The apparent indication that Xbox One is not highly sought after by US gamers seems a bit absurd, given Microsoft’s historical solid track record with its home territory.
Escapist goes as far as to suggest that committed Xbox One buyers simply didn’t search for the console, knowing they were already going to purchase one.

December 24th, 2013, 22:26 Posted By: wraggster
A wholly new problem has found Battlefield 4, thanks to a report claiming that the PlayStation 3 version of the game's China Rising DLC is not being upgraded to its PlayStation 4 counterpart, despite EA's earlier, public claims to the contrary.
China Rising is the first in a series of planned expansions for Battlefield 4 and was offered as a free pre-order bonus to anyone willing to put down cash early on any version of the game. At the same time, EA (and many other publishers) were involved in a promotion that would allow players to upgrade a game from its PS3 or Xbox 360 iteration to a next-gen counterpart for a small fraction of the game's purchase price.
Though the official Battlefield Twitter account claims that China Rising should be upgraded alongside the game using the aforementioned promotion, a player using the name "buckethead232" has revealed a text chat with an EA customer service representative which directly contradicts that idea. "According to the latest updates, upgraded players have to purchase [China Rising]," the representative told the player, before adding that the only ways to get China Rising on either a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One are to pre-order a next-generation version of the game, spend $15 to buy the DLC piecemeal, or spend $50 for the Battlefield Premium service (which bundles all Battlefield 4 DLC).
We've contacted EA for further information on this apparent policy change, though have yet to hear back. That's not surprising given that it's two days before Christmas, but we'll offer an update when and if we hear more.

December 24th, 2013, 22:22 Posted By: wraggster
A new patch has been issued for NBA 2K14 on Xbox One and PS4. This third patch, which aims to improve gameplay features and squash some of the more pernicious bugs, is available for download on both consoles right now.
In the patch notes, 2K Games promises fewer sudden disconnects when playing against others online as well as a resolution to the lengthy blank loading screen that would sometimes hit players when they booted up the game. 2K has also fixed a nasty bug that would prevent players from proceeding past the All-Star break after playing through multiple seasons in MyCareer mode.
Some issues are specific to the Xbox One, – such as game invites failing to go through or players entering an uncontrollable state when a secondary profile would sign in then out. Both have been taken care of, along with a bug where blocked players could still find each other in online matches. Now when you block them, they can't find you on Xbox Live.
Other minor improvements include resolving a camera glitch and adding an entirely new camera angle option, tweaking dribble animations for some players in order to be smoother and changing certain situational AI behavior. The patch changes quite a lot, so head on over to this 2K blog post for the full game tape.

Mercenary Kings is due out on Steam and PS4 in early 2014, despite Tribute Games' attempts to finish it up before the end of the year. Tribute saysMercenary Kings is content complete right now, but the team wants to polish up all that running and gunning before launch, and it's taking a few extra months. The game's previous launch window was "this winter," which technically spills into 2014 anyway – still, Tribute is apologetic.
"Again, we'd like to thank you for your patience. We do not take lightly the privilege of having people be excited about the game and asking us about it every day on social media! We're working really hard to get it in the best possible shape and in your hands early 2014."
To offer a silver lining of the delay, Tribute reveals that Mercenary Kings will support remote play on Vita at launch. Remember, this is the studio behindScott Pilgrim vs. The World and Wizorb, and those both turned out pretty brilliantly, so we'll give Tribute a few more months to deliver a great game. This time.

December 24th, 2013, 22:16 Posted By: wraggster
Niche-focused publisher MonkeyPaw and indie localization team GaijinWorks have teamed up to produce an English-language version of Acquire's PlayStation 3 dungeon-crawling RPG Class of Heroes 2G in 2014.
The two studios previously partnered for this year's PSP release of Class of Heroes 2, which premiered as a PlayStation Network download before UMD copies shipped out to pre-order buyers in October.
Class of Heroes 2 writer and producer Victor Ireland announced that the upcoming PS3 release will feature dual-screen play, allowing players to access in-game maps and stats via a connected PlayStation Vita or PSP. No word has been issued regarding whether Class of Heroes 2G will premiere as a digital or physical release, but MonkeyPaw notes that further details will revealed "after the New Year."

Contrast has a lot of things going for it: It's beautiful, has an intriguing core concept of "a girl and a friend thriving in shadow," and it's free with a PS Plus membership. Unfortunately, upon release it was also rife with glitches that, among other things, tended to leave players stuck in walls, the ground, and other bits of game geometry. A new patch, available now, should fix all of that.
"Good news! The Contrast PS4 patch has gone live in North America, just in time for Christmas," tweeted @ContrastGame. The patch fixes all manner of tech sins, including loading problems, various ways you could get stuck, and my personal favorite, "Fix for the box falling on the player's head and floating in space."
The patch will hopefully remedy the "technical instability" we called out in our review, which often made it difficult to parse if you hadn't found the solution to a puzzle, or if you simply couldn't do what you were trying to do.

December 24th, 2013, 22:11 Posted By: wraggster
It's that time of year again! No, not when we gather with our loved ones and take a break from working. It's Game of the Year season, meaning we've got a great excuse to look back on games we played in 2013 and tell everyone about our favorite experiences. The PlayStation Blog finished tallying up votes from its readers yesterday, announcing the Platinum through Bronze-worthy victors in a blog post.
In regards to their shiny new PS4s, readers most enjoyed their relaxing, sing-along journeys on Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag's Caribbean seas. The Last of Us won over the hearts of PS3 users, presumably for the knee-slappers that came out of Ellie's joke book. Vita fans were most enamored with Tearaway,Media Molecule's crafty platformer made out of paper. Lastly, Housemarque's voxel-jumbling shooter Resogun was voted as the year's best digital release.
Looking forward to 2014, fans are most anticipating Infamous: Second Son, the smoky super hero story based in Seattle, which you can expect on March 21. If you're curious about more than just the winners, the full post also lists runners up for each category as well as personal picks from the PlayStation Blog staff.

Ubisoft is currently hosting a massive sale, including half-priced versions ofAssassin's Creed 4, and Far Cry 3 at 75 percent off.
The caveats attached to these deals are all time-based and surprisingly complicated. For instance, that Assassin's Creed 4 discount is only available to UK PlayStation 3 owners on the PlayStation Network and draws to a close on December 21. The Far Cry 3 deal however, which can be found on Ubisoft'sonline store, runs until January 5 and includes a swath of other games such asSplinter Cell: Blacklist, and even a few discounts on non-Ubisoft games likeFallout 3. A cursory glance at the Ubisoft store shows The Walking Dead's PC incarnation at $6.25 and the Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition at a mere $5.
If sorting through the reams of discounts seems like too much work, here's a trick that might help: While you can find all of Ubisoft's discounts by navigating its site, those who visit the Winter Sale page are able to pull up lists of games based on the size of their discounts.
Edit: The text of this article has been altered to clarify the terms of theAssassin's Creed 4 discount.

Three wise fighters came to Soulcalibur: Lost Swords. And lo, the swordswoman Pyrrha offered the game the gift of Woe, the meat slab Astaroth presented the gift of Destruction, and the dark knight Nightmare... more Destruction. It was not the happiest of holidays, especially since Soulcalibur: Lost Swords really wanted a Buzz Lightyear doll.
And lo, Namco's free-to-play, single-player fighter ventures onto PS3 sometime next year.

All Dragon's Crown wants for Christmas is a massive new dungeon, increased level cap and a bit more soul-crushing difficulty. Fortunately, developer Vanillaware has an in with Saint Nick.
Previously, Dragon's Crown allowed players to develop their chosen brawlers to level 99. As of today, that cap has been raised to 255. To complement the extra 156 levels, Vanillaware has introduced a new Ultimate difficulty level that unlocks once players have cleared the ninth layer of the Labyrinth of Chaos. Not only is the Ultimate difficulty level intensely hard, it also offers players better rewards than lesser difficulty settings.
In addition, Vanillaware has introduced a new dungeon, dubbed "The Tower of Mirages." This dungeon is only available in the Ultimate difficulty setting, and is seemingly designed to break whatever self-confidence you might have. Each time to you enter The Tower of Mirages, its levels are randomized, which is problematic given that there are "tens of thousands of levels" for you to hack and slash your way through.
On a more generous note, Vanillaware has also included a few stability fixes in this new update, along with a new feature that allows anyone who has completed the Story Mode to skip right past it when creating a new alternate character.

The PlayStation 4's recent launch in the UK may not have been a success just for the new home console - MCV reports that sales of Sony's Vita handheld rose by 68 percent during the PS4's launch week, rising again by 65 percent for the following week.
Senior Product Manager Ben Law said that Vita sales are "continuing to see strong week-on-week growth since [Sony's] latest campaign kicked in." Law also pointed to Tearaway and the Remote Play feature as incentives for gamers to purchase a Vita "either as a stand-alone device or as the perfect companion to PS4."
