Atari today announced the forthcoming European release of Namco Bandai Games' Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 for PlayStation 2. As the latest and most advanced in the fighting game series based on the Naruto Universe, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 boasts the largest ever selection of playable ninja characters, brand new playing modes for even more gameplay variety, and unprecedented freedom and immerson into the Naruto world with a 3D rendered Hidden Leaf Village. Set in the Naruto universe popularised by the anime TV show currently on air across Europe, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 is scheduled for European release in September 2008.
The game's main story mode, Ultimate Contest, revolves around the Leaf Village where the All-Out Ninja Tournament is being held between the rival Leaf and Sand ninja. The winner of the tournament will be crowned Hokage and will be able to put forward a new rule for the Leaf Village, but this power must not fall into the wrong hands. To ensure this does not happen, the player enters the Naruto world to explore the massive 3D rendered Hidden Leaf Village, engage in all out battle royale matches, interact with residents in the village and complete over 55 missions.
Players can choose their favourite ninja from the most extensive selection of over 40 playable characters from the hit anime TV show including Naruto, Sasuke, Itachi, The Hokages, The Sound Ninja 4 and many more. Battles are made bigger than ever before by unleashing Ultimate Jutsu to customise favourite characters into powerful ninja warriors, and summoning gigantic creatures as allies in Summoning Mode. Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 also offers tons of combat variety either as close combat or using a variety of ranged weapons, and support characters can be called upon to help with super attacks.
Another unique feature of Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 is the Hero's History mode which lets the player participate in major events and battles from the anime series through the Sasuke Retrieval Arc where the decisive battle of destiny will be played out to determine the fate of the two greatest ninja. For the first time in the series, the player can choose between English and Japanese voiceover to enhance the original flavour of the anime series.
Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 for PlayStation 2 is published by Namco Bandai Games Europe SAS, distributed in Europe by Atari, and scheduled for European release in September 2008.

Sony London has begun full production on PS3 third-person shooter Eight Days.
The Guardian confirmed work was under way as it was shown around the studio, and also revealed that pre-production on The Getaway had begun.
"Moving up from floor to floor, we see Eight Days - which is just ramping up to full production," wrote The Guardian. "To get an idea of the scale of development required on next-gen consoles, the team, currently numbering 63, will expand to about 80 with a further 40 or so outsourced workers.
"A small team is working on pre-production for the next iteration of The Getaway, in preparation for being joined by the bulk of the Eight Days team when the latter is completed."
Eight Days was first shown at E3 in 2006 as one of the hot prospects on PS3 for the future. Its unveiling was handled by a suitably juicy trailer - probably to be taken with a pinch of salt - and shows plenty of driving action with exploding gas tanks in a desert-style location.
There's still no word on when it will be out, but we may see more as E3 and the Sony event in May approach.
Sony London is perhaps best known for its work on SingStar and EyeToy games.

The PlayStation 3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV almost certainly runs in 630p.
Word spiralled from comparison shots by the same fellow responsible for outing Halo 3 as sub-HD, and the same chap who assists with our Face-Off screenshots before we show them to you.
However, Eurogamer's Face-Off compiler and resident big-brain Rich Leadbetter says that while the PS3 version may be a touch blurrier, it's not necessarily inferior. Far from it, in fact.
"It's worth noting that due to the post-processing effects the game employs (there's a serious amount of stuff being done to the raw frame), the PS3's lower resolution serves to mask a lot of the nasty after effects," said Leadbetter.
"For example, look at the dithering on the signs in the background on those shots. A bit ugly on Xbox 360, but smoothed and blurred away on PS3, presenting a generally nicer look."
Apparently the problem with pinning down the resolution previously was due to Rockstar releasing the bulk of its press shots on Xbox 360.
Look out for our full Grand Theft Auto IV Face-Off soon.
GTA IV is out today on PS3 and Xbox 360. You can buy it in shops, unless you queued up last night to get it, and lots of people did.

via Games Industry
Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV finally went on sale in the early hours of the morning today, as consumers across the UK clamoured to be first to play the latest in the 66 million-selling franchise.
After months of hype that saw console rivals attempt to claim the title as their own - Microsoft had promised to match the marketing spend of Halo 3, while Sony secured a tempting hardware bundle - the game is now expected to sell over 9 million units worldwide this fiscal year.
But while the money men are tapping at calculators and console rivals will be hoping to claim the highest attach rate, the consumers could only think of one thing.
"I'm all about GTA. I've been waiting for months, I pre-ordered as soon as I could," said 23 year-old John, who'd been queuing outside of Stafford's GAME store since 11:00pm.
"I usually only play sports games – FIFA and PES mainly, but GTA is different. Nothing comes close," he added.
While some specialist stores had only opened at midnight to allow in customers who had preordered the title, GAME, which had opened 260 stores to celebrate the release, was first stop for a majority of eager gamers.
In Guildford two GAME stores were open, and the queue at both had started at around 10:30pm. At the head of the line at the larger store was Neil Young, in his late twenties, who had preordered the special edition of the game for the Xbox 360.
"I just love sandbox games," he said when asked why he was queuing for the title. "Nothing is better than GTA, it's as simple as that. Having the ability to do anything you want, play the game any way you want - and the multiplayer is going to be good as well."
Further down the queue, Steve, Dominic and Cat had only been in the line since around 11:15pm, and although none of them had preordered, they were hopeful of grabbing a copy before the store sold out.
"It's a benchmark game," said Dominic simply, although all three admitted that had a single launch event taken place in London, as with previous titles, they wouldn't have travelled. "This is in our home town, so…" he shrugged.
As retail prepares for a manic day, there's expectations that there won't be enough copies of the game on shelves to meet demand, and that the game will continue to push hardware sales through the rest of the year.
"Whatever Rockstar put into the market will be gone day one, I'd like to think it will eclipse GTA: San Andreas," offered Steve O'Brien, MD of respected indie Gameshop. "Without doubt it's a hardware driver so sales even as far as the backend of 2008 will be incredibly strong."
Online retailers had already struggled to fulfil preorder demand. GAME, HMV and Play.com began to warn consumers they could not guarantee day one delivery, and due to demand GAME had begun picking and packing stock earlier than usual to make sure the postman delivered GTA IV on Tuesday morning.
But it wasn't just the specialist retailer reaping the benefits of a dedicated audience. Supermarkets hardly need a special occasion to open at midnight so long as consumers have got their wallets with them, and Asda in Wakefield had organised tickets for those who arrived early enough.
"The queue was the entire length of Asda. I got there at 10:45 and I was about 30th in line," said Christian, 35. "They only seemed to have about 40 tickets on each format.
"People who turned up just before midnight took one look at the queue and then went away again.
He observed that hype had probably helped fuel demand for the game, as crowds were bigger than at the release of the last console GTA title: "I was there when San Andreas came out at the same Asda. It was a bit bigger crowd this time, probably because of the stupidly high reviews."
For those that can't get their hands on their own copy this week, or simply want to cut back on games spending, rental companies have also seen great demand.
"The anticipation has been huge. Customers have been adding this to their coming soon lists since last Easter," offered Aaron Barrett, products and services director of WhyBuyGames.com. "I think by delaying the release date and teasing us with the odd trailer has heightened the 'got to have it' value even more."
With perfect review scores hitting the web, hype surrounding the game isn't dying down, but the fans can finally get their hands on the game and make up their own minds. Grand Theft Auto IV is sure to remain a talking point and big seller for the rest of the year, and with exclusive episodic content due for the Xbox 360 version, the crime caper is likely to lead the videogames industry into 2009.

via PSX Extreme
Last year, all anybody could talk about was the possibility of PS3 price cuts, which eventually happened. These days, the PS2 continues to roll along at a fairly decent clip, so some are wondering when the never-say-die console will drop to a very attractive $99.
Well, because the PS2 continues to do so well, you probably shouldn't expect that drop any time soon. According to the MTV Multiplayer blog and our two favorite industry analysts, the demand for the PS2 remains high, and Sony doesn't have much incentive to lower the price tag to $99. Here's what Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter had to say on the matter-
"The real reason we haven't seen a $99 PS2 is that demand hasn't dropped enough for Sony to justify the price cut. Compelling content like 'Guitar Hero' and 'Rock Band' keeps the demand for PS2s up. As long as you've got a couple hundred thousand PS2s a month selling, Sony doesn't feel compelled to make the cut. I think you will get the cut, because, frankly, Sony wants to differentiate the PS3. I think the PS3 comes down to $349, maybe $299 if they can afford it. But they've just been selling four to five million PS2s a year in the U.S. so there's no reason to cut the price until it drops to two million. It really is just demand-driven."
Wilson obviously agrees with Pachter's analysis, saying that while the PS2 will probably see $99 some time down the line, it won't be soon. Here's his two cents-
"The PS2 will almost certainly drop to $99 at some point, but I think it's unlikely in the near-term. The PS2 continues to sell through very well without a price cut. Even if the PS3 was a rip-roaring success (all other things remaining equal), Sony would have little incentive to cut the price."
Well, at the very least, the PS3 is now competitively priced and the top-notch next-gen software is right around the corner. Some of it is already here ('cough' GTAIV 'cough'), and the more we see players leaping into the new generation, the more the PS2 will - finally - get left behind. We believe that then, and only then, will you see that $99 price.

Sierra Entertainment announced Crash Bandicoot: Mind over Mutant.
Info from IGN:
In Crash Bandicoot: Mind over Mutant, a rejuvenated Neo Cortex is taking over the world one brain at a time! Cortex and N. Brio devise a new kind of evil – a text-messaging, do-anything device which controls both mutant and bandicoot minds. Armed with his quick-wits and lightening agility, Crash must free his friends, the titans and save the day!
"The Crash Bandicoot franchise has built a wide audience of loyal fans, appealing to both male and female gamers of all ages," said Al Simone, senior vice president, Global Marketing for Sierra Entertainment. "The Crash series remains one of the most recognizable franchises in our industry and we're excited to make this year's family-friendly title appear at the top of every gamer's wish list this holiday."
Key features in Crash Bandicoot: Mind over Mutant include:
Mutant in your Pocket! - Not only does Crash gain the ability to control his enemies when he jacks them – now he can store his favorite monsters in his pocket, upgrade them and utilize their powers when they are most advantageous
"Free-Romping" World Design - Wumpa Island becomes a "free-romping" environment, allowing players to travel and explore through intersecting worlds, with different gameplay options available depending on what creature you've brought along for the ride
Girl Power! - Your co-op partner is Crash's sister, Coco, playable for the first time in the cooperative mode. Not only does Coco make the game that much more inviting for girls to pick up and play, she also brings with her a new tactile "treasure hunt" ability
New Abilities
Roll and Counter Combat System - Crash will have a fun, agile dodge move and "counter" move which will inflict extra damage on his enemies
Digging - Crash can now dig underground as real-life bandicoots really do; this will allow for Crash to unlock bonus items
Climbing - Crash can climb vertical surfaces and jump side-to-side to connected areas and dodge hazards

Sierra Entertainment announced The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, the third game in the Legend of Spyro trilogy, and will be released this fall in the USA.
Info from IGN:
Reprising their roles as the characters of Spyro and his mentor Ignitus, are two popular Hollywood leading men, Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings trilogy) and Gary Oldman (Sirius Black from the Harry Potter films). Joining the Spyro roster this year are Christina Ricci, Blair Underwood, Mark Hamill and Wayne Brady, rounding out an all-star voice cast.
In the final chapter of the trilogy, players find Sypro teaming up with an unlikely ally - Cynder, his former enemy, to face his most challenging mission to date. As the Dark Master's (voiced by Mark Hamill) evil envelopes the world like a plague, Spyro must fulfill his destiny and unlock the true power of the purple dragon within him to stop the Dark Master in his tracks.
The game introduces two never before seen elements into the Spyro universe: Spyro can now fly at any time and players can drop-in/drop-out with the new cooperative feature. The co-op feature allows players to have the option of completing the game as either Spyro or Cynder, giving them more freedom to explore Spyro's world in completely new ways.
"Spyro has grown up a lot since his debut, and players are going to notice advanced gameplay, character design and story lines in Dawn of the Dragon," said Al Simone, senior vice president, Global Marketing for Sierra Entertainment. "The game takes some exciting twists and turns – fans of the series and newcomers alike will experience non-stop fun, a renewed sense of intensity and the type of challenging adventure only Spyro can overcome."

Refraction posted this news today:
I tried to think of a flashy title for this, but i couldn't, so I thought I'd just blurt it out!
Yes the IPU (video side of PCSX2) has been updated by none other than Saqib! You might be asking what this will bring to the table? Well im sure as many of you know, videos in PCSX2 suffered from Macroblocking (Corrupt squares appearing all over the place) or videos freezing randomly. Well thanks to Saqib for his marvelous work, many games no longer suffer from these symptoms. Here is a quick rundown of some of the games fixed.
Atelier Iris - Grand Phantasm
Ayumi Hamasaki - A Visual Mix
Bully
Graffiti Kingdom
Many Growlanser games
Monster Hunter
Resident Evil 4
Simple Series Videos
Soul Calibur 3
The Simpsons
Many more!
In light of these changes a lot of games have been improved to a playable status or had their stability increased!
The code is in SVN, do NOT ask for help on the forums. If you guys are lucky, i might be nice enough to compile a new beta very soon
Discussion of whats fixed can be found on the Official forums

Radical Entertainment has said it's working hard to ensure Prototype gets a release in Australia and Germany - even if that means cutting the level of violence in the game.
Both regions are notorious for demanding cuts, but Radical's marketing director Chris Hansell has said the team will face the challenges and work closely with ratings authorities to ensure release.
"We're working really closely with the German office and we've had multiple meetings with the USK. As you can imagine that was a lot of work to get it through the German market but we take it very seriously," said Hansell.
"They've seen it a number of times and we're making very detailed analysis of the particular elements we need to change and tweak and we're always watching the other titles and what they have to change. It's a large job for us to do, I won't lie. It's a challenge that we've said we would tackle and take on."
Radical has toned down ragdoll physics on dead bodies, levels of blood and dismemberment, and has said the producer currently has a "very long list" of changes and tweaks.
Despite the extra work, Radical hopes to ship the edited title in Germany and Australia at the same time as the other versions of the game worldwide.
"We've not confirmed simultaneous shipping with low violence but that's the intention for us," revealed Hansell.
Asked whether having to make changes to a game that was conceived for a mature audience was frustrating Hansell admitted, "It's not ideal."
He continued: "We set out to make this game a mature-rated game like any mature movie, people who buy this will be over 18. That's the area we're playing with.
"But obviously it's a challenge that we all face and we have to respect this and make the best possible game we can within those restrictions. But yes, in a perfect world we'd have complete freedom. Maybe one day things might change.".
Prototype is out on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC this summer - visit Eurogamer later this week for a full preview.

Terminal Reality has said that the new Ghostbusters game will run at the same performance level on PS3 and Xbox 360.
Confirmation came at last week's Sierra showcase event, where Ghostbusters was up and running on both Sony and Microsoft's machines.
"We're demoing on both systems so you can see the game is fully running on both systems at the same performance level," said executive producer Brendan Goss.
However, there will be some differences under the bonnet. "Something unique for the PS3 is the displacement mapping," said Goss, demoing a scene where a Ghostbuster is walking down a cobbled alleyway.
"The ground you're looking at is only two polygons, it's a completely flat plane. We get the illusion of the 3D brick surface because of the relief map." Well there you go.
Ghostbusters is out on PC, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and DS this autumn.

Chatter of a PS3 version of the phenomenal shooter BioShock has been bouncing around the games industry ever since it was announced, and yet piano black console owners are still without their Big Daddy.
Well, according to US mag EGM, which has decided to kick off the rumour again, the 2K shooter will be released on PS3 later this year, along with prettier graphics and presumably some extra content to compensate for the release gap.
We've attempted making telephonic contact with 2K for comment, but it hasn't quite arrived at the office yet.
As for the PS3 version, this is probably the bit where cynics say "does anyone care a year after release?" But frankly yes, we would play BioShock all over again on PS3. And you only have to look at Resident Evil 4 (PS2, Wii Edition) to see that it would probably sell by the bucket load too...

Sony is bragging that karaoke series SingStar has shifted more than 12 million copies around the world.
Apparently five million were sold between April 2007 and March 2008, while its online SingStore flogged more than one million tracks in the first four months.
Sony has also seen more than 140,000 or you share around 20,000 videos of yourselves singing along to your favourite tracks. Our rendition of "I Try" by Macy Gray is hard to beat.
"SingStar's success is built upon simple and entertaining game play. Historically we have added new music tracks to keep the experience fresh but the arrival of PS3 has allowed us to think differently," said series creator Paulina Bozek, whose name you can find on the leaderboards in SingStar PS3. And she must be rubbish if those are her real scores.
"We can now take advantage of the next-generation features to take the next step forward in the SingStar experience," she added.
Sony recently announced that SingStar PS3 will be out in the US on 20th May. Americans will be given a slightly different SingStore than Europeans because of broadcasting standards; we have few, apparently.
Sony plans to update the US SingStore with 25-50 songs each month, and will also focus on independent music from smaller bands. There's even a mention of entire albums being offered up.
SingStar was released last year in Europe to predictably favourable reviews. Little has changed, other than the addition of SingStore, which has finally begun to get recycled songs from previous instalments.
The second PS3 instalment in the series, SingStar Volume 2, will add a harmony mode and remote play support so you can shop for songs and look at other people's videos on your PSP. There will also be around 30 songs added, including "California Dreamin'" by the Mamas and the Papas and "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang.

UK players lucky enough to have actually got the Metal Gear Online beta working will find new content awaiting them today.
An update for the European beta has added a new map, Midtown Maelstrom, and a new mode of play, Sneaking Mission.
Midtown Maelstrom is, as you'd expect, another murky urban environment with abandoned apartment blocks and sandbag bunkers in the streets providing cover for shootouts.
Stealth Mission, the mode long-time fans may remember from MGS: Subsistence, has one player controlling Snake and trying to collect the dog tags from the other players on the field.
It's a game of hide and seek, as Snake wears a camo suit making it tough for the other players to spot him.
The MGO beta runs until May 11, a week longer than the original May 5 cut-off, due to earlier teething problems.

Specialist UK retailer GAME will be opening 260 stores across the country from midnight tonight to enable people to get their hands on a copy of Grand Theft Auto IV as soon as possible.
The retailer will also open all 414 stores again at 7am tomorrow morning, but is warning that only customers that have preordered the game can be guaranteed of picking up a copy on launch day.
"Everyone at GAME is working flat out to make sure customers can pick up their copy of GTA IV as fast as possible," said Tricia Brennan, GAME UK and Eire managing director in a statement.
"The release of a new GTA title is always a massive event for our customers, and we expect this to be one of the biggest selling titles of the year. GTA IV is even more exciting as, for the first time ever, a GTA title will be available on two consoles as soon as it launches.
"We know that even greater numbers of people will want a copy very quickly, and due to incredible demand the vast majority have already been preordered by our customers. We are working closely with Rockstar to make sure that subsequent deliveries arrive quickly in our stores."
Grand Theft Auto IV is seen as one of the key entertainment launches of 2008, and has so far won outstanding critical acclaim, including a perfect 10 out of 10 on Eurogamer.net.
