Kotaku's got a great GTA IV rumor posted at the moment, clipped from a recent CVG print feature about Rockstar's upcoming new megagame Grand Theft Auto IV.
While you should probably take this latest info with at least a grain of critical salt, the original article was originally published under the watchful auspices of Microsoft -- a company presumably in the know as far their own DLC is concerned. The rumor going round is that GTA IV's downloadable "expansion" content (you know, the stuff exclusive to the Xbox 360) will be large enough in scope to constitute entirely new cities. From the article:
"Of course to call games as vastly ambitious as Vice City or San Andreas mere 'expansion packs' seems childish, but nevertheless, the downloadable content coming for the Xbox 360 version of IV has repositioned those games in just this way.
"[GTA IV's expansions] are to GTA IV what Vice City or San Andreas were GTA III. Yes, Rockstar is clearly hinting at new downloadable cities; and the chances of them being London, Vice City or SA again are slim to none. So that's new as in brand new. GTA IV's Liberty City is the beginning. Think about that and be excited."
If true, that'd be quite the coup for Microsoft, don't you think? Obviously at this point it's mostly just speculation, and of course nobody's actually saying whether these new cities will constitute anything more than roadside truck stops and wilderness or whether they'll be as full fledged as New Jersey.
Still, the possibility that the GTA IV equivalent to Vice City could be as simple and direct as a download-only bolt-on to the original game isn't so far-fetched as to be unbelievable. This is Rockstar that we're talking about.

It's time to pull out your pocketbooks because the charity auction you've been waiting for is going down right now. Up for grabs: the absurdly rare, one of a kind, hand-made PS3 Laptop, built by Ben Heckendorn for Engadget. 100% of the proceeds of this auction will go to National Cancer Coalition, most or all of which should be tax-deductible by the winner. And to sweeten the deal that much more, we'll even pay shipping, and have Ben Heck himself autograph the thing (if you want). The rules are below, read them carefully.
Real bids only people, this is for charity!
Let us repeat that: only leave a bid if you're prepared to pony up that amount of money. Especially because we might come a knocking if for some reason we can't get in touch with the top bidder.
Auction is over Friday, April 25th. We'll contact the winner by email.
Payment will go directly to National Cancer Coalition, and will be expected to be made within one day of the auction's close. We will confirm with the charity that the payment has been made.
A US winner will get free FedEx air shipping.
We will also ship internationally, but auction winner will likely have to pay customs.
Product is sold as-is, with no warranty by Ben Heck, Engadget, and certainly not by Sony.
Just in case you need a refresher, here are pics and video of what you're bidding on. Good luck -- and for those that don't win, please don't let that stop you from donating to the NCC or another charity of your choice!
Update: We're postponing the auction. A few people can't be mature enough to bid properly on something for charity; others believe we should be posting the auction to eBay (despite the fact that the last time we did a charity eBay auction we got scammed). We'll get back to you, thanks.
By popular request we posted it to eBay. If we get fake bids again, though, we're likely not to do anything like this again in the future -- so be good.

Hi, any of you read the kojima interview on edge???
"When we first showed the game engine at TGS, the staff were really proud and happy. PS3 was a dream machine, y'know, and we were going to work on this and that - and we had so many ideas. But when we actually started developing the game, we realized there were a lot of restrictions and so it turned out how you see it today. The original vision was to go ten steps further, the reality was just one step, which isn't to say we didn't progress.
I remember saying three years ago that we wanted to create something revolutionary, but in reality we couldn't really do that because of the CPU. We're using the Cell engine to its limit., actually. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the PS3 machine, it's just that we weren't really aware of what the full-spec PS3 offered - we were creating something we couldn't entirely see

It's being reported that Underground Developments (formerly known as Z-Axis) is to be shut down once all work on Quake Wars PS3 work is complete.
Things have been a little too quite on Enemy Territory: Quake Wars for console recently (apart from that May release date leaking out). So it's a shame that the latest story brings with it some bad news.
According to Develop magazine the studio's parent company Activision has yet to offer a comment on the rumour. But that hasn't stopped the publication suggesting the closure could be related to the looming merger of the Activision and Vivendi businesses.
Nothing official yet then. But it's not looking good. More soon. May 30 at the latest.

Earlier today, the Cherry Blossom lobby theme was activated, replacing the Easter theme. Under this theme, the lobby music is replaced with Cherry Blossom and sakura appear on Guardian Colony/Neudaiz. Also, players will be able to purchase the Flowers room decoration from the Guardian Colony Variety Store.
Unfortunately, this lobby update seems to be causing graphical glitches on Parum and Moatoob. The normal lobby decorations for those planets are non-existent at the moment.

Maximum Attack G is almost here! In preparation for the event, we'd like to help SonicTeam spread the word about MAG Live Support. In order to make Maximum Attack G the most fun and well-supported PSU event to date, game masters will be providing live support to players on a regular schedule for the duration of the event. Continue reading below for complete details.
Five days a week (Monday-Tuesday, Thursday-Saturday) starting Saturday, April 25, between the hours of 4:00p.m. and 8:00p.m. PDT, game masters will be on-hand to provide customer support to players who have concerns over cheating, scamming or other abusive behavior. Support will be provided at the party recruitment missions located at each planet's GUARDIANS Branch. At first, an in-game announcement will be made to let players know when a support shift has begun and where to go for assistance. Later in the event, a standard location for support may be established. When there are no open support issues, game masters will be on patrol in the lobbies to chat with players and occasionally may join active missions.

April 18th, 2008, 16:23 Posted By: wraggster
Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg told Next-Gen in a phone interview Thursday following the release of March's NPD sales figures, "I think the battle for the core user is sort of over, if you will. We're heading now well beyond 20 million in console sales.
"I feel we've secured that core buyer, and that gives us quite a bit of an advantage versus PS3, which is late to the game and still at a price disadvantage relative to the Xbox."
Asked if his verdict is being doled out too soon, as big PlayStation 3 titles such as Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet and Gran Turismo 5 loom on the horizon, he asserted that Xbox 360 has indeed outdone PS3 in the core market.
"I think the type of audience that [Sony is] going after with many of those games, frankly, are Xbox 360 owners...They're trying to go after a consumer that has already bought an Xbox 360, which frankly has a much broader lineup with more titles and more exclusives. You could say that [Sony] showed up with too little, too late."
But even Greenberg will admit that on a global scale, the console war battleground is hotly contested, particularly in Europe, where the PlayStation brand, along with sales for Sony's console, remain strong.
"Without a doubt, Sony is a very formidable competitor in Europe, and they have entrenched themselves as an established brand, and we recognize that," he said. "But it's also part of the reason why we say Europe is the battleground territory for us this generation. So we've really double-downed our efforts there in marketing spend and our aggressiveness in that market."
Greenberg said Microsoft is forecasting Xbox 360's installed base in the US to be two- to three-times that of the PS3 by the end of 2008.
In addition, he said in the US and in EMEA territories, the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV has had more pre-orders than the PS3 version by a 2:1 margin. That game launches on April 29.

A new Saints Row 2 trailer couldn't possibly be any worse than the last one released, and this time around we're being treated to in-game action rather than squiggly lines and dialogue.
You can watch the trailer, which runs for two minutes, in our video player. Can this really stand up against GTA IV?
On top of the trailer, THQ's released four new screenshots into the wild, which we've included here for a Saints Row 2 media medley.
The sequel's just been slapped with an August 29 release date for the UK.

Earlier today, Namco Bandai announced the release of a new update for Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Online. The update, which is available for free at the PlayStation Store, adds a number of new features for the title that was released in March of 2007. Players now have the ability to enter Pickup Match Mode, continuously fighting in one-on-one matches instead of entering the waiting room. Users can enter and display names for specific online rooms, and even filter their opponents by connection speed via the Flag search feature.
Multiple bug fixes have been made to the game, and additional notifications have been added to let players know when they can fight or when players have entered or left an online room. Another feature that's been included is if your ranked match option is set to off, the results of that match won't affect your overall win/loss record, allowing for more casual fights or players to get practice online against other players. Finally, the update provides DualShock 3 rumble support so players can feel the force of each punch and kick in the game.
We'll have more on Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection as it becomes available.

I don't know why anyone would want to port around an entire PS3, but now you can thanks to Clearvision's new LCD attachment. And don't worry Nintendo fans, you haven't been left out of the fun, because China Vaison has developed a similar screen for the Wii console. Both screens measure 7 inches and feature integrated speakers along with a convenient flip-top design. The Wii version (and presumably the PS3 version) also take component outputs. Still, they both pale in comparison to the 12-inch XBox 360 version released last year.

We won't have to wait long to find out Universal's plans for Blu-ray, Reuters just noted that later today the studio will announce plans to release about 40 movies on the format in the second half of the year, including Doomsday. The only studio to support solely HD DVD from the beginning will come out with all three of its Mummy films: The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and The Scorpion King July 22 (sounds like someone's bitter about HD DVD and taking it out on Blu-ray owners to us), with catalog releases jumping over from red like Miami Vice, Knocked Up, American Gangster and others before the year is out. Keep an eye out for specifics later on, like whether those U-Control and community features from the HD DVD versions will make the jump intact

Sony has updated its fancy new PlayStation Store with, among other things, the client for the Metal Gear Online open beta.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to play the 741MB beta (which is already out in North America and Japan) until next Monday, April 21 - but we're sure it'll be a lot less fun to download it on the day.
Joining the MGO beta is the long-awaited Lair Deadly Dragons Pack, which gets replaces the rubbish SixAxis controls with the option to use traditional analogue sticks.
The latest Warhawk expansion, Operation Broken Mirror is also up for download for the princely sum of £3.99.
Before you get started in Metal Gear, read our online guide and learn a few tricks.
