Protesting the release of Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, X360) on April 29, outspoken game critic Jack Thompson (pictured left) has written a letter addressed to the mother of Take-Two Interactive chairman Strauss Zelnick.
Take-Two Interactive owns Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar and is publishing the upcoming title. The letter was delivered to Strauss Zelnick's lawyer, per a past settlement that only allows Thompson to communicate with Take-Two via counsel.
Thompson's meandering letter compares Strauss to a Hitler Youth, quotes scripture, accuses him of causing the death of three Alabama police officers, questions if the Boy Scouts ever awarded him a Ted Bundy merit badge, and wishes the chairman's mom a happy Mother's Day.
The complete, unedited letter follows:
Extract of letter:
Mrs. Zelnick
Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two Chairman's Mother
New York, New York Via e-mails to intermediaries
Re: Your Son, Strauss Zelnick
Dear Mrs. Zelnick:
Your son, as you may know (or maybe you don't know), is Chairman of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., whose most popular video games are the Grand Theft Auto murder simulator games banned in some countries but sold to children here.
Your son last week was reported to have said the following about Grand Theft Auto IV, due to be released Tuesday, April 29: "We've already received numerous [GTA IV] reviews, and to a one, they are perfect scores. My mom couldn't write better reviews..." Taking your son's thought, I would encourage you either to play this game or have an adroit video gamer play it for you. Some of the latter gamers are on death row, so try to find one out in the civilian population who hasn't killed someone yet.
What you will see in your son's game, if this iteration of GTA is anything like its predecessors, is incredible interactive violence aimed at police officers (whom you can shoot in the head and see the blood spray), innocent bystanders (whom you can run over with your car just for the heck of it), and of course the plentiful female prostitutes you can have sex with and then filet with a knife or stomp with your feet in order to get your money back. Experts note that the recent plethora of cop killings is caused in part by your darling son's entrepreneurial energy. There are three policemen dead in Alabama because of Grand Theft Auto. I was on 60 Minutes about it. I hope Strauss has provided you with a flat screen tv to see the grief of the bereaved families that fills the screen.
As it's a long letter, see the full article here

The organisers of the Paris Game Developers Conference, taking place on June 23-24 this year, have announced that Mark Healey and Alex Evans, co-founders of Media Molecule, will be presenting a keynote speech at the event.
The presentation, titled "Media Molecule, Little Team, Big Ideas", will look at ways for development teams to incorporate creativity into their work, as well as running down the history of the company and its first title, the anticipated LittleBigPlanet.
The event, for which the Super Early Bird registration rate ends today, will be taking place at the Couer Defense Convention Centre in Paris, and additional speakers and session topics will be unveiled in the next few weeks.
More details and registration information can be found on the Paris GDC website.

Criterion has just revealed that motorbikes are on their way to Burnout Paradise in the upcoming "Davis" update.
The developer aired the news in its latest podcast where it showed the first footage of the two-wheelers and uncovered a day and night cycle to go with it.
Criterion expects the "Davis" update to be available in late July.
We were also shown footage of a biplane flying around Paradise City, which is something Criterion "might put in this year".
The chatty developers revealed that the "Cagney" update will be with us in late June, too.
Inside this will be roughly 35 fixes asked for by the community, as well as a Hunter Olympus SUV and some sort of fancy online calendar to keep you updated with all the online events.
These events should be happening every weekend, and some server-side wizardry means the team can change things with no more than a day's notice. The team has plans to dish out unique car-prizes to people sending in very funny emails or winning competitions. And these vehicles will promote plenty of jealousy, apparently.
Criterion said "Cagney" would add around 70 FreeBurn challenges to the mix, and generally be a "massive" update in every way.
"Bogart" is the next update to go live, which will be available tomorrow on PS3, although some 360 owners will have to wait a week for a revised version without frame rate problems.
In this will be more features asked for by the community, as well as user liveries for the first time ever.
Other promises we heard were 1080i implementation, improved SD support, and custom soundtracks.
Criterion reiterated how serious it was about its on-going support for Burnout Paradise, and urged you to keep sending in suggestions.
"We want Criterion to be known as the most friendly development team in the world," said the person holding the camera, which might or might not be Alex Ward.

Pre-orders for the PS3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV are outstripping the Xbox 360 version by 3:1 on the website of UK supermarket Asda.
"Both titles have generated great interest on the Asda website, with strong pre-orders, and the PS3 version is selling three times that of 360, which is surprising and not in line with what we'd expect," said Asda's head of games to MCV.
Over the past two weeks, Microsoft has been aggressively promoting its console as the best way to experience Grand Theft Auto IV, producing TV spots and newspaper adverts in addition to Rockstar's own marketing blitz.
In contrast Sony has done very little. Even the GTA PS3 bundle seen all over the internet has yet to be officially confirmed.

Soulcalibur IV director Katsutoshi Sasaki has said he is looking forward to competing with Capcom and Street Fighter IV.
Instead of being worried, Sasaki relishes the creative stimulation, and likes seeing fresh ideas that could be incorporated into Soulcalibur in the future.
"When we see some other game that has some new element that we could probably borrow and make Soulcalibur even better, then we will definitely look into it," Sasaki told MTV Multiplayer. "Creators are always being stimulated by all the games on the market."
Soulcalibur IV is being created with novices in mind, apparently, with online largely included so that you could be paired-off with those of your own skill level.
Sasaki also touched on the controversial height-advantage of special character Yoda in the game, who will naturally avoid high swings from taller opponents. Sasaki said not to worry, as the little green man will have his own disadvantages to overcome.
Soulcalibur IV will be out for PS3 and 360 on 31st July.

Newly released today:
The stage is set in Europe around 1930s. In this alternate universe, Europe was split into the “Empire” and the “Union” and for years and years, these two superpowers have been seeking to unify Europe through a large scale war, named European War II (E.W.II). Heroes often emerge in these chaotic times, and in a small, neutral country, Galia, such a young man came forward to join the fight.
Galia was falling under the onslaught of the Empire's overwhelming forces, but before the enemies could take the capital, Welkin Gunther, the leader of a small army faction thwarted the military giant's plans and entered historical records as a hero.
The screens in the game are filled with a dusky tint, the lines are smooth and the palette is subdued yet warm. Aside from its distinctive graphics, the sounds in the game is just as impressive. The epic storyline coupled with the rich graphics and sounds supported by the third generation consoles creates a world that players immerse themselves fully into.
Senjou no Valkyria is a turn based RPG that combines strategy with action. Proceed with the game the way you read a history book. Read the text and get involved in the battle parts, depending on the options you have chosen or the battles you have fought, the game rewards you with more chapters to your “book”.
Sega's much anticipated tactical RPG Senjou no Valkyria and its Limitex Box edition for PlayStation3™ is in stock today, shipping as region free Japanese versions for respectively US$ 69.90 and US$ 129.90 only.
The Limitex Box edition comes with a special model of the motor tank Edelweiss, a figure of the heroine Alicia Melchiott and a World Guide containing all information with regards to the game.
The US version of Valkyria Chronicles is arriving in September and is available for preorders for US$ 64.90 only.

Wal-Mart's intranet, "The Wire," recently laid out how the maestro of retail will handle the Grand Theft Auto IV launch. As seen in the picture above -- with the full plan detailed in the gallery below -- 24-hour stores will begin selling the game at midnight and should be prepared for the launch. One of the more interesting parts in the "execution guide" states that Wal-Mart has a "strategic focus on winning in gaming, and GTA IV represents a strong opportunity for [it] to highlight [its] entry into the gaming industry." Customers are supposed to know that Wal-Mart is the: "Fastest way to play GTA IV."
The guide describes that two associates should be manning the register, with one to ring up customers and the other to pass along the requested game version. If the line is too long, an electronics associate should "take quantities of the game to the front register and assist the cashier by handing out the game at time of purchase." Considering Wal-Mart went through the effort of making such a comprehensive guide, corporate would probably love to hear from customers who don't have a pleasant and efficient shopping experience during the GTA IV launch.*
*Metagame: The "execution guide" has a major error on Pg. 2, can you spot it? Hint after the break.

There's nothing "quick" about having to register three unique IDs to play the Metal Gear Online beta. But, assuming most would-be participants have already got a PlayStation Network account, the real pre-game obstacle has been the Konami ID and its supplementary Game ID.
Since the beta (with its laggard update patch) was released for download last Wednesday, the Konami ID registration site has been a case study in how not to prepare for a traffic spike. Thankfully, the site is now back online with a temporary "quick registration" option for those of you eager to push past the bureaucracies and land in some actual gameplay, um, rather, return to the waiting room...

Grand Theft Auto IV art director Aaron Garbut has shed some light on how a GTA game comes together behind the scenes, revealing that the process is actually very organic rather than carefully planned.
"There are essentially two routes you can go down in making a game: you can do a load of pre-production upfront and plan it all out in advance or you can just dive in and be a bit more organic," Garbut told Eurogamer, as you can see in part two of our exclusive interview.
And while you might imagine that the former is necessary on something as vast and all-encompassing as GTA IV, apparently you're wrong.
"The first option is the safest, it lets everyone know where they are from day one, it lets everyone know what needs done and it's the easiest to organise. But I think it tends to lead to fairly lifeless, soulless games, particularly when the games are more open like ours," Garbut told Eurogamer.
"We are a lot more organic, this is a conscious choice and it does lead to more difficulties along the way, it's harder on the team and it's trickier to keep track of but it leads to better games.
"It works because the core team know each other well and have worked together for a long time, we trust each other and know what to expect. Our whole ethos is to try things out, play with them, find what works best and move in that direction."
Elsewhere in the interview, we find out how Rockstar goes about making up fictional brands like Cluckin' Bell.
For the most part it's as you would expect - a well-organised design department - but occasionally it does come down to round-robin emails seeking inspiration. "Every so often an email will be sent out looking for ideas for businesses or slogans, which always ends up degenerating into pictures of cats and diarrhoea for some reason," said Garbut. "But ideas come from all those places."
All part of the massive development effort that goes into a GTA game. As Garbut put it, "It's all a big scary tangled web. But it works." See how well it works when the game comes out on 29th April, and check out part two of our interview for more.

Infinity Ward has revealed that the Variety Map Pack for Call of Duty 4 on PS3 will be available worldwide this Thursday
It's a week earlier than expected, and sees the double experience weekend move foward to begin this Friday.
The Variety Map Pack will cost USD 9.99 (GBP 5 - assuming it isn't altered for our region), which is a little cheaper than the Xbox 360 version at 800 Microsoft Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60).
Inside the bundle are four maps: Broadcast, Killhouse, Creek and Chinatown. We liked the latter two when we got to grips with it recently.
