Time for an update. No new release this time though (sorry it's just not ready yet). Just wanted to post this to update you all and release any fears of this project being dead.
What has changed since V4.8?
The below changes are 100% complete :
- Crashing bug fixed. (for good?)
- Fixed Menu bug where the text "off" would be printed below the "quit" text.
- Removed Border around in-game.
- Re-enabled Demo Mode & Fixed Random Crashing bug attributed with it.
- Properly Cantered Message Dialogue boxes.
- Fixed bug where message box displayed corrupted and in the wrong position.
- Reduced "ghosting" further and made movement slightly slower (it makes it a lot more responsive now)
- Finally made the game fill the full capacity of the screen. So yeah its full screen now
- Fixed screen fadeout after returning to the game via the menu. No longer shrinks the screen then expands it. Just fades out.
- Improved Menu controls (x = confirm/enter, /\ = back/no
- Improved cheat code activation, start key is no longer used, and keys used are easier to press (uses 3 keys as opposed to 4 now)
- Huge code clean up. 1500 Lines gone (roughly)
The following are Work in progress :
- New Audio system implemented. Sound & Music are now 100% Perfect. (Uses Wav's for sounds, and Mp3's for music, Mp3's play on ME processor) - This is done but not finished as of yet. Roughly 45% complete.
- Fix original sound system.
- Fix save/load slowness & corruption.
- Fix other minor bugs.
- ???
What is this new Audio System?
Sound Effects :
Basically it uses wav files extracted from the Wolfenstein audio data files and plays them back at a very high quality rate. It sounds stunning.
Music :
This plays back mp3's which are obtained by extracting the raw music data from the audio data files, converting it to midi, then to mp3. This may appear to be a bad idea, but it sounds awesome.
If this new audio system is so great why bother fixing the old one?
Well I am doing this for a few reasons. Around 50% of the Wolfenstein sound effects and music are available for me to distribute without breaking any copyright laws. (the ones from the shareware versions). The sound files from the full versions are a different story though.
I have contacted ID who referred me to there department that deals with questions regarding the Wolf3D source code. Once I recieve and answer back from them saying I either can or cannot distribute the sound and music files from the full versions of Wolf3D and Spear Of Destiny, my hands are tied.
So as a backup plan I am also fixing the old sound code.
Didn't you try that before?
I never stopped working on it, although briefly. Today I made an interesting discovery. I decided to port fmopl (opl emulator) from mame to wolfenstein 3d, that before this used v3.7. I always presumed that the opl emulator was outdated and thus was causing all the issues with the sound. However I was wrong.
After getting it working (about 30 minutes later) the sound was just the same as it was before. So this means that the problem lies in the implementation of the sound initialization code. It is probably something simple, like a timer being slightly off, although it could be just plain wrong.
So later today (going to bed now) I am going to start investigating this and see how it goes. I will post if I manage to work it out today.
To Summarize :
The next release will be out when one (or both) of the sound systems are complete (perfect), and the saving and loading is fast and stable.
This could either be tomorrow or in 1-2 weeks time, I can't really say.
Bear with me and your patience will be rewarded

The EMMA 3PF is the first large-scale integration (LSI) chip to pack all of the necessary Blu-ray controllers onto a single piece of silicon. The new chip performs all audio and video decoding, analog to digital conversions, and HDMI output. It supports the Blu-ray 2.0 profile and will start shipping in September 2008, allowing player sizes to continue getting ittier and bittier.

Another PS3 update, another round of complaints. It seems as if people on the official Playstation forums are having issues with discs not reading, games locking up, and fans blowing out of control under the recent 2.42 firmware update. We don't know if it's just uber-paranoid people who were burned by 2.40 or an actual problem that Sony will need to fix. What about you—any problems with the 2.42 update or are things just peachy?

The current PSP release schedule is pretty much a cut-rate psyche test -- is the glass half full or half empty? Folks leaning toward the optimistic answer have been dealt a blow today; THQ has officially canned Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed on the PSP.
"Basically, the PSP version was cancelled because of control issues," a THQ representative told IGN. "DAH! Big Willy Unleashed was designed by [a] Wii developer specifically for the Wii. When it was ported over to the PSP, the controls simply didn't translate well, and instead of pushing out the product with translated controls, it was cancelled."
So, the big guy's still coming to the Wii, but PSP gamers have been left probe-less.

Developer Media Molecule has "a rather scarily long list of great ideas for ways to support the community" after LittleBigPlanet launches - but is waiting to see what people want first.
"We've got loads of plans, we're going to support it massively," studio founder Alex Evans told Eurogamer. "Content packs, new objects, new game modes... All of this stuff could be done. What we're basically waiting to see is what the demand is for.
"We can do all of that stuff - we will do all of that stuff - but what order we do it in, and how much weight we throw behind any of the different ideas that different people have got, is totally down to what the community does," he continued.
"That really excites me, because if people are loving the costumes, we can crank them out. If people are loving the levels and master classes... We've got a slightly scarily long list of great ideas for ways to support the community, and it's just a matter of prioritising at this stage."
As to what users will be paying for that content - if anything - Media Molecule hasn't made up its mind yet, but there'll definitely be some freebies in the mix.
"All options are open," Evans informed us. "I can definitely say that there will be content that's available to people free of charge - I'm just not saying exactly what that content is going to be right now.
"I can also say that if there's any way we can reward the community, we'll go there. If people are clamouring for big chunks of content, it would make total sense for us to do it. We're just exploring all options at this point. Sequels? Why not! DLC? Yeah, why not! Paid-for content? Why not!"
Look out for our full interview with Alex Evans soon.

Square Enix has revealed that Final Fantasy XIII will be released in Japan next year.
A PS3 demo will arrive as a bonus disc with the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children animated film in March 2009. We're unlikely to see a sampler at the Tokyo Game Show later this year, though.
That's according to announcements from the DKΣ3713 event in Tokyo last weekend, where FFXIII director Motomu Toriyama said work has not yet begun on the Western Xbox 360 version of the game.
Square Enix has previously told us Final Fantasy XIII will launch on both platforms simultaneously in Europe and the US, which means we could face more than localisation delays as the Microsoft version plays catch-up.
"We haven't changed the direction of the development. We're making the PS3 version first, and then porting to the 360 later," said Toriyama in an on-stage video interview, translated by GameSpot.
"I'm telling [the development team] to not think about the Xbox 360 right now. We can think about it after the development kits arrive."
Videos from the show are rarely released, but reports suggest real-time footage of Final Fantasy XIII and action sibling Final Fantasy Versus XIII was shown.
Square Enix told us European plans for Final Fantasy XIII and the demo are yet to be confirmed.

SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has briefly mentioned Fumito Ueda and Team Ico's new PS3 game, which he says is looking "really, really good".
In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine UK, Yoshida hinted that it could be a while before we see the Shadow of the Colossus team's new game.
"They are working on a title," he told the mag. "I started the ICO project. Ueda-san joined my team in Japan as a cinematic animator, but he created a short movie and presented it to me and said, 'I want to make this game.'
"I said, 'Yes, let's do it, but you have never made a game. We have to have experienced people do it,' so it took a while, recruiting one person at a time. And because Fumito Ueda doesn't compromise, we had to move the development from PSone to PlayStation 2. Then I couldn't complete the game because I moved to the United States.
"It took four years and the second game took four years too," the new Sony games boss continued."So I started calling them the 'Olympic Team.' They haven't released a PS3 title yet - of course not - they'll take four years! But they have something really, really good on the way." Hopefully we'll see something next year, then?
An image of the mysterious Ico PS3 game emerged earlier this year, showing a ancient, stone environment that wouldn't be out of place in either of the previous two games.

The promised 1.01 patch for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune has hit the decidedly charted PAL regions of the world, unlocking PlayStation 3 trophy support for one of the console's greatest titles. The patch, which weighs in at a modest 13 megs, unlocks 47 trophies that coincide with the achievements already built into the game, along with a 48th platinum trophy for unlocking all of the other trophies. Already unlocked all of the game's achievements? Well start a new game and unlock them again, as they won't be applied retroactively due to cheating concerns.
Right now the patch is only showing up in PAL territories, though we're certain a North American release can't be too far behind. AHA! Err, UPDATE: Now available in the states!

Insomniac Games has said Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty will be available here from 21st August - the same day as the US.
The game costs USD 14.99 over on the other side of the ocean, but Sony Europe has yet to set a price. We're getting a regional Blu-ray release of Quest for Booty, although the exact date for that is also TBC.
Quest for Booty is the naughtily- and nautically-named PSN sequel to Future tools of Destruction.
The game is around three to four hours long and looks as impressive as Future Tools of Destruction did, only this time there are pirates with brilliant things like cutlasses and big leather boots and parrots.
Sadly there will be no Trophy support, as Insomniac finished the game before that feature was released in PS3 firmware v2.4.

Speaking during the QuakeCon keynote, id Software's John Carmack has revealed that the Xbox 360's DVD format could result in the developer's upcoming game, Rage, being compromised on the platform.
According to Shacknews Carmack noted three DVDs will be needed for the Xbox 360 version, although royalty fees to include a third disc would rule out this option. Unless Microsoft makes a concession, id will be forced to release the game on two DVDs with heavy compression, thus making the game look worse than the PS3 version.
