Released in Japan on October 16th, the new PSP-3000 has reached a sales figure of 141,270 units in its first four days. Impressive! Also impressive, the combined sales figures of the PSP-1000 and PSP-2000 for the October 13th-October 19th period tallied 155,720 units. (Compare that to the 19873 PSPs sold the previous week and the 24131 sold the week before that.) To date, 10,357,481 PSPs have been sold in Japan.

This week's BBC News at Ten featured a discussion on the LittleBigControversy, in which the game was delayed at the eleventh hour due to a song, featuring lyrics taken from the Qur'an, by Grammy award-winning artist Toumani Diabaté. According to GamesIndustry.biz, the program had Diabaté on to discuss, as well as Sheikh Ibrahim Mogra of the Muslim Council of Britain.
"It's quite normal to play music and be inspired by the words of the Prophet Mohammed," said Diabaté, himself a Muslim. "It's my way to attract and inspire people towards Islam." Mogra provided the counterpoint, saying that "Muslims believe the Qur'an to be the actual word of god and give it utmost respect" and its use in a commercial title would "upset and cause offence and hurt to many, many Muslims."
LittleBigPlanet is expected to arrive next week for North America and "no later than the week of November 3" for Europe.

Ahh, customer service, it ain't what it used to be. Just 10 minutes after plugging his Rock Band instruments into the supplied USB hub, Jim Squires noticed that the cord to the unit was smoldering and had created a totally non-rocking electrical fire.
Upon informing EA of the problem, Squires was told by the company to plug the USB adapter back in to test it. No, seriously, he was. Now Squires is still trying to talk to an actual human at the company to let them know about the whole "the Rock Band adapter could have burned my house down" thing.

Though SCEA is still "looking into the problem," Sony's Japanese headquarters (SCEI) has released a statement describing the PSP-3000 (a.k.a. PSP Brite) scanline issues as being part and parcel of the new hardware. "PSP-3000 has a new LCD device with vastly improved picture quality, achieving a more natural and vivid picture than older models," said the statement (via Engadget Japan). "By improving LCD response time to reduce ghosting, the horizontal-line phenomenon becomes more visible."
Turns out, phenomenon means "no fix in sight." According to Sony, "Since this phenomenon is caused by hardware characteristics, there is no plan to fix it with system software update." We'll be interested to see if Sony of America (SCEA) has anything different to say.

Ruh roh. Seems that swanky new LCD on Sony's PSP-3000 could be garnering more complaints than anything else. If you'll recall, the aforesaid system was touted as having a brighter, better screen than the PSP-2000, but now the PlayStation forums are filling up with irate PSP-3000 buyers who are experiencing unexplained scanlines and totally peculiar interlacing problems. As you can see above, the 3000's screen looks noticeably worse than that of the 2000, and while we always hope that these issues are contained, we have at least one Engadget staffer and a Joystiq comrade who can attest to this being real. SCEA has been contacted and is currently "looking into" the matter -- we won't dare say that r-word just yet, but this doesn't look particularly good on the surface. We'll keep you posted.
Update: A Japanese Sony Computer Entertainment representative has informed us that the interlacing-like lines are just "features" of the new LCD, and currently, there are no plans to fix it with a future software update since it is in the hardware.

- Added imageLoadRawC() and imageLoadIIFC() functions to load an image in RAW/IIF format from memory.
* Load_IIF.c

Fans eager to engage in some voice-activated, real-time strategy on their favorite handheld systems ... will have little interest in the rest of this post! Ubisoft has detailed the PSP and DS versions of Tom Clancy's EndWar -- both of which launch alongside their bigger console brothers on November 4th -- and made it apparent that warmongers on the go are in for a markedly different experience.
Developed by Funatics Software, the portable pair presents "turn-based strategy with a twist," allowing simultaneous move and attack phases which render the experience as intense and authentic as real-time strategy -- it says here. Other relevant features include three campaigns, over 20 units per faction, a two-player versus multiplayer mode, a mission editor, stylus controls on the Nintendo DS and, judging by the screenshots, somewhat less realistic graphics. Who knew advanced wars could be so colorful?

Over on the official PlayStation forums, owners of Sony's revamped PSP Brite are in a tizzy over what many have reported as prominent screen interlacing during video playback and gameplay. The PSP-3000 uses a new high-contrast, low-latency screen that eliminates the ghosting/smearing associated with older PSP revisions, but appears to introduce a new issue of visible scanlines and notably jagged edges on moving objects. One poster provided comparison photos that illustrate the problem.
We unboxed our PSP Brite to test some games and see if we encountered the same problem. Sure enough, in both FMV and gameplay, there is a noticable offset between the two video fields comprising the on-screen image. The included Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters looks significantly more "pixelated" on the PSP-3000 versus on our PSP-2000, as did other games we tested, including God of War: Chains of Olympus and WipEout Pulse. Additionally, scanlines are visible simply when navigating the unit's XMB.
The problem is slightly less noticable when the new Wide Color Space option is turned off. We contacted SCEA for comment on this apparent hardware issue and were told that the company is "looking into this" and will get back to us as soon as possible. We'll update this post when we hear more. In the meantime, let us know in comments if you're experiencing similar issues with the PSP Brite.

We know they're hitting the streets, and we've already seen some unboxing pics and a nasty gutting, but we felt we needed to give Sony's new PSP-3000 the proper Engadget treatment. As you can tell by the photos, there's not much new here, though as you should know, the guts are where it's all going down (new screen, built-in microphone). Still it never hurts to take a close look at a shiny new toy... so enjoy yourselves in the gallery.

Last week, Sony announced a worldwide recall and delay for LittleBigPlanet after two expressions from the Qur’an were discovered in the lyrics of one of the game’s licensed music tracks. The song is titled “Tapha Niang” off the album Boulevard de l'independance. It’s actually a pretty catchy song, and I'm quite disappointed it won't be in the final game. If you managed to get a retail copy before the recall, it might not matter since it's believed Media Molecule will release a patch to remove the song from every copy anyway. So enjoy it while you can.

What the headline so clumsily tries to convey is that Ubisoft's snazzy, non-rotoscoped remake of 1989's Prince of Persia will finally arrive on the PlayStation Network this Thursday, October 23rd. Sporting modernized 3D graphics, new traps and the same perfectly-postured-princess-in-peril plot we've grown to love, Prince of Persia Classic is sure to awaken nostalgia while preparing you for the royal acrobat's next adventure -- unimaginatively dubbed Prince of Persia. With any luck, we'll be appending "classic" to it as well when it releases on December 2nd.

News/release from Davee
[Scramble Patcher by Davee]
[Notice]
This is for firmware 5.00 ONLY!
[Info]
This release is mainly targeted at theme developers more than normal users, but they can use it if they wish.
If you haven't seen the VSH Module Descrambler, you will need to go and check that first, before using this.
This plugin allows to patch modules on-the-fly with the scrambles in ms0:/scrambles/*.
To use this is easy, all you have to do is get a scramble for the VSH Module Descrambler and put it in the ms0:/scrambles/ folder named the same as the module which it came from (vshmain scramble becomes vshmain.bin) with a .bin extension.
Using this allows quick turn around times for finding values in the scrambles. You can simply just modify it from the memory stick rather than descramble it from the prx, apply edit, rescramble and then flashing it.
Like I said, its more a debugging tool than usable device, but it does allow a flashless customise of prx's.
Remember some boot values are set in the RCO's (xmenu) and will not be visable until you go into a submenu and exit from it.
If you want it to be at a certian position, you may need to modify the RCO beforehand.
[Install]
Copy seplugins folder to PSP root. (do not overwrite vsh.txt if you have existing plugins. Add the entry manually).
Copy correctly named scrambles to ms0:/scrambles/ folder.
Activate plugin in recovery.
Boot PSP.
[Credits]
Davee - Rescramble PSP code.
Bubbletune - Original Descramble method and Design.

A rumor from the latest issue of the US Official PlayStation Magazine suggests Sony may be offering more than just trophies to add to your digital collection. Besides the standard trophies you receive now, players will also receive stuff. What that stuff is, we don’t know yet. The quote from the magazine reads:
"We've heard that SCEA is mulling over some sort of Trophy reward system. We doubt it'll be cash (or the equivalent), but we suspect it might be exclusive access to early betas and the like."
I don't have a problem with early access to demos or betas, hell, even free theme packs. But don't start excluding me from content entirely simply because I don't have the time to get 50 head shots in a row, Sony.

News/release from Hellcat:
H E L L C A T s - R e c o v e r y - F l a s h e r
========================= ========================= =====
* recover semi-bricks * up-/downgrade your CFW *
* flash *ANY* CFW directely to 3.71-/4.01-/5.00-M33 *
* backup/restore firmware flash (not NAND dump) *
all without Pandora
========================= ========================= =====
** UPDATE ** UPDATE ** UPDATE **
Added native support for installing a fresh 5.00-M33
Added option to cache the special modules from all updater .PBP currently on your memstick.
The modules are saved seperately and - if present - used directly instead of extracting them from the required updater (again) when performing a restore of a backup.
This way you can save space on the memstick by deleting the updater .PBPs if you don't need them otherwise.
What is this? And why?
========================= ===============
Short version:
--------------------
Flashes a fresh M33 CFW (3.71, 4.01, 5.00)
for recovering semi-bricks or to up-/downgrade CFW
does not use Pandora, runns from the recovery menu or the XMB
does not use (as in launch) the original Sony Updater (only extracts
all required files from the original .PBP)
runns fine on CFWs lower than 3.52-M33-3 - handy for upgrading older
FWs w/o the "need to go 3.52, then 3.52-3, then higher" odyssey :-)
runns fine from TimeMachine (3.40-OE on Fat and 3.60-M33 on Slim)
can backup the FW flash and restore selected parts (XMB theme,
settings, PSN activation, complete firmware)
Long Version?
--------------------
Can be found - aside many other infos and details - in the README
Does it work?
========================= ===============
This program has been tested by myself to successfully flash
a fresh 3.71-/4.01-/5.00-M33 on the following setups:
3.02-OE *) -- on Fat PSP
3.40-OE -- via TimeMachine on Fat PSP
3.60-M33 -- via TimeMachine on Slim PSP
3.71-M33 -- on Fat and Slim PSP
4.01-M33 -- on Fat and Slim PSP
4.01-M33 -- started via DDCv6 (kinda pointless to install a 4.01 then,
but hey, can't hurt to try )
1.50 -- on Fat PSP, using the 1.50 build of the flasher
^^ yes, that reads "one point five", and yes, I flashed directely to 4.01-M33-2 from there
*) Note: On lower CFWs (early OEs, mostly) you may get warnings during
3.71 installation regaring assignments of flash1:
This is normal under theese FW versions, no need to worry.
The program will disable formatting flash1 in that case, so
everything should be fine.

One of the coolest things about the Official PlayStation Blog is when they let the people who worked on the games post their thoughts on the process. Take today's posting by Stephanie Fernandez, the localization producer on Namco Bandai's Eternal Sonata for the PlayStation 3, which upon release this week will be the best damn RPG on the system (yeah, yeah). In the post she goes over some of the bigger changes in the PS3 version from a localization perspective, exploring the new story elements and the challenges presented with recording battle voices for the two new playable characters, Crescendo and Serenade, before they actually had any footage of them fighting.
Unfortunately, since we weren’t able to see the characters fighting in the game before we recorded, we had to make some guesses about the way in which lines would be used in battle situations. Sometimes we got it right, but sometimes we didn’t. So, in the end, it was necessary to edit some lines slightly. But, overall, I think it came out sounding pretty good.
Overall she sounds incredibly enthusiastic about the whole project, to the point where I'm actually mulling over picking up the PS3 version for another play through.

IGN were intending to give away beta keys for access to the Resistance 2 beta. However, Sony Europe has suspended the beta keys, due to "unforeseen circumstances". The company has issued assurances they will be working to fix the problem that has cropped up as quick as possible.
For now, it looks like those in Europe wanting to get onto the beta will have to wait.
