Uberjack one of the PSP Scenes most vocal coders posted this article at his site:
You’ve probably heard about this elsewhere already, but Dark_AleX has recently posted information on why the newer PSP models (later-model Slim, and likely Brite) cannot currently be hacked.
The upshot of the story is that 32 bytes of data that were previously unused space used for padding, are now actually used for storing two cryptographic hashes. The hashes are assumed to be (and in all likelihood are) based on the decrypted copy of the encrypted information, and are used to authenticate the validity of the encrypted data. If a computed hash doesn’t match the supplied hash, the CPU will refuse to run the firmware.
The new implementation is not very different from the implementation of the SSL/TLS protocol, as well as many other common encryption protocols — in fact, it’s rather strange (though perhaps fortuitous for us) that it wasn’t implemented until now. It does, however, significantly complicate the initial bootstrapping process (if only in terms of cryptography), which simply required valid decrypted data (according to the same article, original encryption was destroyed by employing a timing attack).
If there is a silver lining here, it’s in the potential weakness of the human element. For those of you who recall, Pandora came about when a Sony repairman left specially-formatted memory stick in a repaired PSP sent back to a customer. Let’s hope that some lucky soul somewhere finds a bunch of unencrypted boot IPL’s in his/her memory stick (and that he/she knows who to send them to).

Jack Buser, director of the PlayStation 3 virtual world "Home" project gave me a private demo of the service in midtown Manhattan last week. He was trying to impress me with "Home," which launches free to every PS3 owner this fall.
Buser was going to have to work hard.
I'm the guy who, following an unsupervised 10-minute session with the service, wrote the following about Home for Kotaku back in June:
"Home is clearly still a work in progress, functioning not that differently from what you heard about more than a year ago. Whatever it needs to make it a hit, I don't think it's in there -- yet."
My impression has been changed. What I hadn't seen or had explained to me when I entered "Home" on my own those few months ago, was the function and helpfulness of the community. "Home" will be pointless if no one's in it, if its central plazas are empty. Buser said they won't even launch "Home" -- an event scheduled for this fall -- until they meet their goal to "have a kind of community to show people around." The idea is it's all social. You go to an area of "Uncharted" to find out what people there think of the game or to ask for a hint. Yes, some of us would go to NeoGAF or Metacritic or GameFAQs for that kind of stuff. But perhaps the average PS3 owner wouldn't. For them, perhaps "Home" is the answer to questions they barely knew they had: Where do they go to meet people just like them?
I could see Buser's point about how socially empowering "Home" may be, even if his demonstration barely budged my sense that it will be meaningful "Home" will be for a PS3 user like myself. For a gamer like me who already has ways to talk to other people about games, "Home" still doesn't seem terribly useful. For all the gamers who haven't found a way to connect to people just like them and would like a comfortable way to do so, "Home" may suit them fine.

Newly released today:
description
Fracture advances players to the year 2161, where the effects of global warming have altered the planet’s landscape, and a clash in ideologies over human enhancement places society on the threshold of war. In utilizing the core gameplay mechanic of Fracture, a destructive next-generation technology known as Terrain Deformation, players are equipped with an arsenal of futuristic weaponry to strategically reshape their surroundings on the fly. Every action they perform dynamically reshapes the earth in ways no videogame has.
Players set foot on the frontlines of this epic conflict in the role of Jet Brody, a demolitions expert fighting for the Atlantic Alliance, who rely upon cybernetic enhancement. Pitted against the genetically enhanced soldiers of the Pacifican army, players will experience a revolution in 22nd-century warfare. When Brody throws a tectonic grenade onto a level battlefield, the ground blasts upward providing access to otherwise unreachable areas or providing cover against approaching enemies. Surrounded on all sides by Pacifican forces, Brody heaves a vortex grenade, creating a swirling tornado-like mass of boulder, dirt and debris to dispatch his foes. These are just a few samples of the possibilities for Terrain Deformation. Players not only change the battlefield – they change the face of the battle itself

Here are the latest shots of Sega's Yakuza 3, headed for PS3 early next year in Japan (probably late 2009 over here).
You may recognise a couple of these shots from previously-published, lower resolution examples, but these are all nice and big, and it looks great.
And we put them on the site without even mentioning Shenmu... erm, that other Japan-set Sega adventure.

A 2K community manager has acknowledged the validity of some complaints made by gamers about the PS3 demo of BioShock.
"When we saw a post asking about issues found in the demo, we jumped on it immediately," wrote a 2K community manager on the developer's forums. "And you know what, you're right. The texture in the PS3 demo of the downed Big Daddy does not match our level of quality either. This slipped by. We admit it.
"However, I want to assure you that this is an exception, and not a rule, and while I regret this oversight, we put a lot of love into making this game look amazing for the PS3 and I'm sure that when you play the rest of the demo you will agree that the textures are not all like this one instance."
Some users also complained about the demo's jittery frame rate and awkward display setting options - apparently BioShock runs at sub-720p, but the demo forces itself to display at 1080p instead of defaulting to the game's optimal resolution.
The 2K rep didn't specifically refer to any other concerns raised by forum users, but did say that the company was looking into the issues raised about the demo.
"As for the other issues and concerns, we are currently diligently working to replicate any bugs, and will report back to you with what we find. Thank you for your vigilance here and moving forward," the post concluded.
Here's hoping the final product matches up to the PC and Xbox 360 versions of the game.

via Eurogamer
Media Molecule co-founder Mark Healey has admitted that controlling LittleBigPlanet "annoys" him, but insisted the studio can "refine" this after the game releases.
With thousands of gamers currently getting an early experience of the much-hyped title via the beta, some have complained about the basic controls of Sackboy, specifically moving the character between planes in the "2.5D" perspective.
Speaking to Eurogamer TV last week, Healey acknowledged the issue, stating: "The Z [axis] movement is an incredibly hard thing for us to get right. There's times when it annoys me actually, but we can work on that if we want, and refine it. But on the whole, we got to a good place with it I think, because we wanted to cater for my mother and someone that's a hardcore player, so it was hard to get the balance there."
Healey added that the game had been designed so that changes could be made post-release, via a downloadable update.
"There's definitely room for improvement and we've got the channel to be able to do that as well," he said. "I'd really love to be able to do backflips and all kinds of things with my Sackboy, and there's no reason why we can't add that and refine that."
LittleBigPlanet is out exclusively on PlayStation 3 on 24th October. Check out our most recent LittleBigPlanet hands-on preview for more, and watch out for some very special LBP coverage this week and next.

We know everyone always complains about Killzone 2's apparent lack of colour, but it's shots like these that forces us to admit that it does look really, really nice.
They're not all that high-res - having been snapped by someone on the multiplayer beta, but just check out the environmental detail in there.
We'll be in the beta soon, and you too, hopefully. More on that when we know it.
Thanks, NeoGAF.

Via: PS3 NEWS
We recently purchased a new 80GB PlayStation 3 console, and our very own PS3 Dev Courier dissected his new system.
The item that peaked his interest the most was that it had one single 56-pin Flash chip, the S29GL128N90TFIR2, and was 128MB in size in contrast to older PS3 consoles utilizing dual (2x256MB) 48-pin chips totaling 512MB. So, he bought a new adapter, and some blank chips and proceed to pull the 56-pin flash, and dumped it.
o our surprise, he was unable to dump more than 16MB of it! At first, we believed that the other blocks in the flash were protected via password, however there was something else brewing.
He took the 16MB dump that was made and flashed it onto a completly blank chip, and reinstalled it in the PS3.
To our surprise, it worked!
Now, if you recall, newer version PS3 Firmwares have asked for a PUP file after formatting/inserting a larger HDD - This may be why! After flashing back just the 16MB of data, it also asked for a PUP file. So, the PUP was given, it installed the missing files fine, and then booted.
Basically, the system is now storing the majority of the flash contents on the hard disk drive, away from prying eyes. Even on a PS3 TEST console, the areas where the files would be are protected, so they can not be accessed.
This was also true when we wiped the 80GB's HDD, it again asked for the PUP. So, it would seem that the base system is now stored on the flash, and all of the SPRX's, XMB files, and other data is now fully stored on the HDD.
So the question is, why?
Was it just cheaper to replace the flash with a smaller one, or was it a security decision? Were we getting too close to uncovering something on the flash that could lead to a hack in the system?
We don't know yet, but we are still working at it - more to come, including details on the PS3's Service Mode!
