Hello, echochrome fans! This is Tatsuya Suzuki, Producer at JAPAN STUDIOS for this project. I hope you have been enjoying your experience so far.
Five months after our release in May, we are happy to bring you a whole bunch of additional stages for echochrome PSP/PSN. In an era when crisp, photo-realistic graphics are a pre-requisite for games, one may look at echochrome and perhaps question its artistic design choices, namely the modernistic approach of its monotone color palette and line art style.
However, you may be surprised to learn, this look was only made possible with modern
day technology.
First and foremost, there is the high quality wide screen LCD that is standard to the PSP. All of the artwork in echochrome is based on straight lines, thus clarity and resolution is a very important aspect to our game. The mannequin figure is also drawn just with lines, so it’s important that its outline is smooth. Another important aspect of the screen is its responsiveness. Since the core of the game’s design relies on rotating the stage, clarity and visibility plays a key role as you try to find the best perspective for your next move.
And then there is the all-important CPU that feeds the images to the LCD screen. Again, at first, echochrome may not appear to be such a CPU-intensive game. However, in the background, the title is pushing the processing power of the PSP to its limits. It’s like a swan swimming on a lake. It looks graceful to our eyes, but beneath the surface of the water that swan is actually kicking its feet pretty hard to just to move around.

The PLAYSTATION Network is coming to the PSP next week -- at least in Japan. Firmware 5.00 will be available on October 15th and will add the built-in PlayStation Store under the new XMB category.
Japan will then get a regular release of downloadable titles through the rest of the holiday season. Games include:
Yuusha no Kuze ni Namaikida or2 (10/16)
Bleach Soul Carnival (10/23)
Secret Agent Clank (11/20)
Patapon 2 (11/27)
LocoRoco 2 (12/4)
Resistance Retribution
Notice how every SCE first-party title is downloadable, including Resistance Retribution? It looks like Sony is finally ready to give up on UMD ... or at least give consumers a viable alternative.

News/release from Homebrew Modder
I have modded titch.ryan's battle monsters game to make it a Legend of Dragoon battle card game. all thanks goes to him for coding the game. I have enjoyed all of the time i have spent cropping 70+ pictures to perfectly fit the card and deleting the text in all the cards and hand typing the names of the cards. and also changing the star rankings to dragoon spirit balls. I hope you all enjoy.

News/release from Art
Hi Guys,
This program relates to an obsolete Pay TV encryption system,
and is not intended to aid in pay television piracy in the present day.
Back in the day it was possible to use this algo, and it's signature algorithm counterpart to produce programs to maintain pirate tv cards,
or to produce programs that run on the cards themselves.
This is just a little PSP demo with the keys from Rashid's original document
(included) hard coded into the program.
For the first time, a live visual decryption of the Plain Master Key can be seen this way.
The "11 11 11 11 11 11 11 11 11 11" Hex Master Key from the
example doesn't give too much of a visual display,
but the second example in this YouTube video:
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=h96QVoUDvoA
uses a different key set which is also made up from arbitrary byte values.
The PSP demo is a user mode program,
and has been tested with 3.52 and 1.50 kernels on 3.52 M33 custom firmware.

Cheers, Art.

Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G is going to be launching with the beta of Sony's new free Ad-hoc Party service in Japan on October 30. Given the 2.5 million sales of the Capcom party-based online title, that's not too much of a surprise.
But the big question is, what will you do once you're tired of hunting monsters?
Sony gave a big hint at the answer today. In an official statement announcing the Ad-hoc Party service, Sony said that future titles would follow, lead off by Phantasy Star Portable.
We're not fully sure if this guarantees that Phantasy Star Portable is on the way, but it sounds like a good bet!
In case you weren't keeping up with Sony's Japanese announcements last month, Ad-Hoc Party lets PSP users play select ad-hoc-based network games against distant players using the PS3 as a proxy. The console provides a lobby interface, complete with voice and text-based chat.
Coinciding with today's announcement of the final starting point for the service, Sony also shared a few screens of the beta version of the PS3 client software.

October 9th, 2008, 22:53 Posted By: wraggster
PSP may have been the first major gaming system to launch with online-enabled titles on Day 1, but since then, the console has not lived up to the dream of online play. Only a few titles feature an online mode, with more titles opting instead for the less expensive and simpler ad-hoc mode of local player-to-player play. Earlier this year, however, Sony Computer Entertainment officially announced a brand new feature that would help make online play on the portable a much more common experience for gamers.
Debuting October 30th, this new service called "Ad-Hoc Party" connects PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3 together, using the console as the home base (rather than having the complications of a net connection and lobby server) online play on games utilizing ad-hoc mode. The PS3 would "tunnel" your game session between another player or set of players over the internet.
While online mode (or "infrastructure mode") is fairly rare on PSP, almost every game with a multiplayer feature supports ad-hoc mode. Do the math, and you can see the potential of this feature. Gamers would link to friends via their PlayStation Network ID, so friend lists and other communication (such as PlayStation Eye, text chat or microphone voice talk, we assume) would come automatically with the feature. This service would only allow players to play online when at home and within range of their PlayStation 3, but unless you play a lot of SOCOM games at your local coffee shop, you probably won't be missing out too often. It is not known yet what specific titles will actually be able to use Ad-Hoc Party, but theoretically the number of games that might use this mode is huge.
We're hoping to have further details on this feature from the show, but owners of a Japanese PlayStation 3 should mark their calendars now for October 30th.

From Uberjack:
In the upcoming month or so, expect to see updates to a number of existing emulators - Fuse and fMSX are likely to be some of those updated. Updates are likely to range from very small fixes, to new (and hopefully interesting) features.
If you also own a GP2X, good news — I’ve been contacted by the author of the GP2X port of RACE!, who plans to use RACE! PSP’s state saving code his port. Speaking of which, all signs indicate that state saving works without a hitch — if you’re interested in details, here’s a list of tested games.

October 9th, 2008, 22:07 Posted By: wraggster
The Tokyo Game Show is one of the highlights of the year for the video game industry, which spreads its major announcements between this event, the Leipzig Game Convention and a diminished E3 show in Los Angeles in the summer, and the Game Developers’ Conference in San Francisco in the spring.
Tokyo is more about games and gamers, with nearly 900 games on display and up to 180,000 people expected to attend over the next four days, rather than the limited industry professional events of E3 and GDC.
The console makers are therefore emphasising new titles, with Microsoft announcing a new version of Halo - Halo 3: Recon, to debut in a year’s time.
It also gave a launch date of November 19 for the “New Xbox Experience” - an update to its interface that allows the creation of animated avatars and new community features.
The “Experience” is designed to compete with Sony’s Home, a much delayed virtual-world interface for the PlayStation 3.
While Sony has yet to set a date for its official release, Jack Tretton, its US president, confirmed it would debut in November, in a recent interview at Sony’s US headquarters in Silicon Valley.
Extracts from that interview after the jump:
How does the PlayStation 3 fit with Sony’s ambition to network all its consumer electronics devices and mesh content?
Give me a form of entertainment that Sony’s involved in that doesn’t touch the PlayStation 3? That makes me perfectly happy if there are other ways to consume [a Sony film ] like Hancock. I have multiple choices just on the PlayStation 3 - I can sell it or rent it to you digitally through our video-on-demand service or I can play it on the Blu-ray player. The other cool thing is I can transfer it over to my PlayStation Portable and watch it there.
Why then buy another Sony product like the Internet Link for a Bravia TV or a networked Blu-ray player when for $399 you can get a PS3 that does it all?
I think it’s education. If people knew everything that a PlayStation can do and you really gave them an opportunity for a side-by-side comparison, they would buy a PS3. I get that all the time - why would you buy anything else? It’s a more educated sale today and that requires a different way of thinking in the way we market it and the way we sell it at retail and that’s something we have to work on.
Is your marketing shifting from the games?
The challenge is to wear multiple hats, because there is still the gaming audience that wants to know about the new games, they judge you first and foremost for your gaming capabilities. That is the audience we will never ever abandon. At $399, combined with the great software we have to offer, it will make us a very compelling argument this year and I have no qualms about us meeting our corporate goals and selling every unit we manufacture.
How has the video-on-demand service launched at E3 fared?
It’s going swimmingly well, there’s been a tremendous appetite for purchase and rental, it’s going a long way to helping tie the relationship together between the PS3 and the PSP because you can have up to five different PSPs with that movie content on it, so when I’m going to travel I will hook my PSP up to my PS3 and transfer it.
What are the prospects for Home?
It is a jaw-dropping experience. You become part of a living community with an avatar you can customise and your own 3D apartment, it’s a world unlike anything you’ve ever seen. I think it will be another part of our ecosystem, adding social networking and a connective tissue to the experience.
Where do you stand right now in the console wars after a somewhat shaky first year?
Gamers are coming back to us, we are selling a higher percentage of games such as Madden NFL and Grand Theft Auto, because people are choosing the PS3 [over the Xbox]. Sales are up over 100 per cent and we are tracking well ahead of what we expected. We are having success in multiple markets and, coming up to the second anniversary of the PS3, we are right where we wanted to be.

Sony has dropped a brand-new feature on its PS3 console that will let you buy Premium themes—specialized themes that contain high-quality graphics, customized buttons, and (sometimes) special sounds. Since they cost real money, PS3 users will have an option to preview the images before deciding to drop the cash. The company plans on releasing 6 to 10 premium themes every month, which will run the gamut from anime-styled to NCAA-franchised content. It's pretty, but is it worth your penny?

With only one analog nub, the PSP can't seem to nail down a comfortable first or third-person shooter control scheme on its own, but a new tech called "PSP Plus" will allow users to pair the handheld with the PlayStation 3's more genre-capable SIXAXIS or DualShock 3 controllers. Sony announced PSP Plus at the Tokyo Game Show today but didn't provide much info about how it works, so we're not sure if it's the same technology that was patented last year. We do know there's a pretty outrageous catch: you'll need to connect your PSP to your PS3 to use the controller. With only one game supported (Resistance Retribution), we prefer just about any homemade hack to this solution, and if you're at home with your PS3, why not play Resistance 2 instead? It's what Kratos would do.

via Eurogamer
It's a bumper day on the PlayStation Store for once, with plenty of downloadable content, a couple of demos and even a full game.
Valkyria Chronicles (581MB) and Hail to the Chimp (374MB) are the two demos. The former, previewed last weekend, is a turn-based strategy title from SEGA, while the latter is a reportedly rather drab satirical party game based around jungle elections. Find out.
The full game is called Linger in Shadows and costs GBP 1.99. From what we understand though, it's actually a product of the demoscene, albeit with a bit of interaction. Should be interesting.
In terms of downloadable content, whips have been flying at Capcom, with Mega Man 9's Endless Attack mode (GBP 1.99) and Proto Man pack (GBP 1.49) arriving on cue, while the rather rubbish Rocketmen gets the It Came From Uranus expansion (GBP 1.99) Xbox Live has had for months.
Elsewhere, Everybody's Golf: World Tour gets Costume Pack A (GBP 3.19), which allows you to re-outfit five of your golfers, and there's also a pair of Super Stardust HD downloads - Complete (GBP 6.49) and Double Pack (GBP 4.49), which sound like the full game with all add-ons and then all the add-ons, but the descriptions are ambiguous. Sorry.
Finally, there's a Comedy Movies quiz pack (GBP 3.49), presumably for Buzz! Quiz TV, and a pair of NBA Live 09 downloads - the Oklahoma City Pack, which is free, and the NBA Live 365 game pack for GBP 6.99, which will allow you to download daily updates for the Dynamic DNA season mode.
Not content with that, there are trailers for WipEout HD (making of), Midnight Club: Los Angeles, Mirror's Edge (2D story trailer), Need for Speed Undercover, Metal Gear Solid 4 (story trailer) and one called Puzzle and Power Packs, which showcases the upcoming PlayStation Network Collection bundles for PSP.
There's also a host of Rock Band content, but we're not going to bore you by writing it all out long hand, so here's a roundup of all the key stuff mentioned above, followed by the Rock Band downloads:
- Valkyria Chronicles demo (581MB)
- Hail to the Chimp demo (374MB)
- Linger in Shadows (full game - GBP 1.99)
- Comedy Movies Quiz Pack (game pack - GBP 3.49)
- NBA Live 365 (game pack - GBP 6.99)
- NBA Live 09 Oklahoma City Pack (game pack - free)
- Rocketmen: It Came From Uranus Expansion Pack (game pack - GBP 1.99)
- Super Stardust HD Complete (game pack - GBP 6.49)
- Super Stardust HD Double Pack (game pack - GBP 4.49)
- Everybody's Golf: World Tour - Costume Pack A (GBP 3.19)
- Mega Man 9 Endless Attack (game pack - GBP 1.99)
- Mega Man 9 Proto Man Mode (game pack - GBP 1.49)
Rock Band:
- Red Hot Chili Peppers - "The Power of Equality" (GBP 0.99)
- Red Hot Chili Peppers - "If You Have to Ask" (GBP 0.99)
- Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Breaking the Girl" (GBP 0.99)
- Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Funky Monks" (GBP 0.99)
