While there's debate about how much stock should be put in the reviews from Japanese game magazine Famitsu, one cannot deny that they do carry influence for some consumers. The magazine scores games on a numbered scale with 40 being a perfect score — something that only a few titles have ever achieved: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Soulcalibur, Vagrant Story, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Nintendogs, Final Fantasy XII, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Metal Gear Solid 4.

It's debatable whether or not Apple is losing its touch with FireWire, but you can rest assured that OWC hasn't. Said outfit has just announced the industry's first Blu-ray external drive with a quad interface, meaning you can link it up to your PC or Mac via FireWire 400, FireWire 800, USB 2.0 or eSATA. The Mercury Pro SW-5583 arrives with the capability to toast BD-Rs at a rate of 4x and includes a pair of 25GB BD-R discs for $499.99; the closely related Mercury Pro SW-5583T throws in a full retail version of Roxio Toast 9 Titanium (OS X) and sells for $579.99. Now, if only we could convince Steve that Blu-ray and Macs could indeed get along together, we'd really be satisfied.

Mortal Kombat II mysteriously disappeared from PSN a few days ago for reasons unexplained. But Sony has said it is "working diligently" to bring the brutal fighter back online.
"A Mortal Kombat II specification is being upgraded in connection with the release of the latest firmware update," Sony has told 1Up, referring to the 2.50 firmware update that went out on October 15.
"This is one of our top titles on PlayStation Network, we are working diligently to get this back up on the PlayStation Store."
Despite it still not being totally clear on what when wrong, at least Sony is on the case.

As part of a twelve page blowout on the Fabula Nova Crystallis series this week, Famitsu gave FF Versus XIII its fair share with four pages of coverage. Unfortunately, there's no gameplay information, and most of the details are just speculation based off the included screenshots (all of which are confirmed by the magazine to be real time), but there are a few new bits of information on the hero and heroine.
The names of the two were revealed at the Tokyo Game Show to be Noctis Lucis Caelum and Stella Nox Fleuret. Stella is described by the magazine as a princess in the Fleuret family.
She and Noctis are shown in the magazine's screens discussing their ability to "see light." This may not sound all that special at first, but in Versus XIII, it's an ability that Noctis suggests keeping quiet about. Stella appears to be more open about the matter, even asking Noctis when he gained the ability.
Wondering what the characters' names mean? Typical for the FNC series, the two names are Latin. The three parts of the hero's name mean "Night, Light, and Sky." The three parts of the heroine's name mean "Star, Darkness, and Sword." Darkness is also the meaning of Stella's country's name.
Director and character designer Tetsuya Nomura shared with the magazine a few additional details on the characters. Nomura feels that the trailer footage (which you probably haven't seen, unless you made it out to the Tokyo Game Show) tells us a lot about the personalities of the two characters. Stella, for instance, is shown speaking politely to Noctis and without any apparent reserve. This is a reflection of her strong upbringing. In contrast, Noctis appears to be running away, and won't even make eye contact. It may appear that Noctis is cold and unsocial, but he's actually just shy, and he hides his shyness by putting on a veil of coolness.
Regarding Noctis, Nomura also notes that he may say one thing, but by watching him closely, you'll get the feeling that there's something different about him. His friends are often able to see through the cover, though.
Needless to say, despite four pages of coverage, Versus XIII still remains the most mysterious of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series. Things are slowly falling into place, though, with the main characters named and now detailed. Who knows -- perhaps the next update will come with a few hints at gameplay.

At long last, Final Fantasy XIII fanatics can stop referring to that blond-haired dude with the bandanna as that blond-haired dude with the bandanna. Thanks to the latest Famitsu, he now has a name, and as promised it's based off the weather.
Meet Snow Villiers. As you probably know, he has blond hair and he wears a bandanna. Famitsu describes Snow as one of the l'Cie, those people who are chosen by the fal'Cie to perform some mission. He has a positive outlook on things, but often makes his move without thinking.
Famitsu speculates, presumably based off the many new realtime screenshots included on its pages (for those who have the magazine, all shots on the third and fourth page of the FFXIII feature are real time), that Snow takes his mission, as handed out fal'Cie, seriously. He believes that in following the mission, he will be helping to protect the world.
Now, we only need to know pigtail girl's name, and we can start engaging in real conversation about the main FFXIII game.

The first episode in the Penny Arcade Adventures series will be released on the US version of the PlayStation Store tomorrow, 23rd October.
Sony has yet to get back to us about whether it will be released on the European Store at the same time, but the press release says "other regions to follow shortly thereafter", so perhaps there's a bit of localisation holdup.
Developer Hothead Games has said it will cost USD 14.99 in the US, and that the existing PC, Mac and Linux versions sold via digital distribution will be reduced to match that price.
Over on Xbox Live Arcade, where the game launched in May, Microsoft set the price at 1600 Microsoft Points (GBP 13.60 / EUR 19.20), but Hothead boss Vlad Ceraldi hopes that will change for the second episode, due out this Christmas.
"Other platforms and digital distribution services can make their own decision regarding pricing, of course, but we're recommending under USD 15 for this and all episodes going forward," he said.
And PS3 owners won't have to wait long to carry on if they enjoy this one.
"Episode Two will be coming to PlayStation Network before Christmas and we are really happy how it turned out," Ceraldi added, following a 'gone gold' announcement recently. It should also arrive on XBLA and PC around the same time.
The PS3 version of Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness - Episode One, to give it its full title, includes Trophies, score rankings and background music support.
You can find out what we made of it when it came out on XBLA by checking in with our Penny Arcade Adventures review.

via Games Industry
Atari president Phil Harrison has told GamesIndustry.biz that he believes Sony took "absolutely the right decision" in recalling LittleBigPlanet over the controversial references made to the Qur'an.
Harrison, who was previously president of Sony Worldwide Studios before taking on his current role - and who championed the title from the very beginning - also thinks that the delay won't affect the game's ultimate success "one iota".
Answering a question as to whether the game is worth the wait, he didn't hesitate: "Of course," he said. "I can only base my answer on my own experience of playing the beta, which was knowing an awful lot about how that product was created, and the passion and energy that the team at Media Molecule and Sony put into it," he said.
"I downloaded the beta, I sat down to play it, and it's pretty rare that within five seconds of starting a game you fall in love with a bit of software. And it was just the most fantastic experience, the whole intro sequence, where you've got the narration and the video of the dreams coming off the people in real life, going up to form the planet - I just thought that was absolutely inspired.
"And that was done after I left Sony, so all credit to Media Molecule for that, or whoever was responsible. And then you get into the game and it was just smiles all the way.
"So I think people are going to be blown away by the game, and while I'm obviously sad for the stumble, I don't think it will affect the long term success of the game one iota."
Speaking on the eve of his keynote at the Unite 08 event in Copenhagen, Harrison added that the decision to pull the game wasn't one that would have been taken lightly, but one that was fundamental to the core mission of the game.
"I wasn't privy to all of the discussions and debate that went on within Sony, but I know they would have thought very deeply about it, and at the highest level of the company," he explained. "And on reflection I think it was absolutely the right thing to do, because LittleBigPlanet set out from day one to be a game for the entire world - and if there was anything that accidentally detracted from that vision and made the game not fun for the entire world, then the game would have fundamentally failed in its mission.
"So I think Sony took absolutely the right decision - painful though it was, and frustrating though it might be for gamers who were looking forward to it. It only seems to have heightened the anticipation, so I think it'll end up being a win, and full credit to Media Molecule for turning around a fix as quickly as they did."
GamesIndustry.biz will have more from the Unite 08 conference and Phil Harrison's keynote speech later.

This is nothing more than a simple installer to apply the SONY 5.01 Firmware fixes to 5.00 m33. (There have been safety checks put in place, to prevent someone flashing this to the wrong firmware...) Some people don't like manually flashing their PSP, so maybe they will find this helpful.
A video demonstration of the Easy Installer:
Please see:
http://dark-alex.org/
for more info on 5.00 m33
Credits to matchung for investigating what files changed between 5.00 and 5.01 and testing it.
EDIT: I also released an Easy installer for the 5.00 m33 PS1 (POPS) bug found earlier in the week here:

for those interested...

We hear you, Star Wars fans. We know that when you looked at the announcement of Star Wars: The Old Republic and didn't see the "Xbox 360" or "PS3" categories, your heart broke just a little bit. But hey, looks like they're at the top of this post, aren't they?! Unfortunately, this post is devoted not to making your dreams come true, but telling you that EA is "considering" bringing TOR and Warhammer Online to consoles.
More specifically, Electronic Arts exec Frank Gibeau said, "We're definitely looking at the opportunity to bring the MMO experience to console, without question." So, we hope that answers your question: EA definitely, maybe, kind of could bring The Old Republic to consoles. Maybe.

You know, I spew a massive amount of trashtalk when online. I can't help it. It just flows out, like oral diarrhea or something. So Sony's new PS3 terms of service for the PlayStation network is kind of frightening. I mean, I'm sure you've said some regrettable things to the snotty 12-year-old bastards running around online nowadays too. Or maybe you'd like to talk about the ROMs running on your PSP. Also not a good idea with Sony's LittleBigBrother plan to record everything you say or do online:

Konami and Sony's limited edition Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 may have been enough to satisfy a few fans of the game willing to pay a premium for their console of choice but, for sheer excess, it has nothing on this custom-made system built by the folks at Morpheon Mods, which is now up for auction on eBay. Among the many details adorning this shiny creation is a laser-cut, stainless steel MGS4 marquee, a laser-etched image of Solid Snake, a carbon fiber Fox Hound logo on the rear, and 14 white micro LEDs to light everything up just right. They even got Hideo Kojima himself to autograph the console and, perhaps best of all, they wrapped everything around a fully backwards compatible 60GB PS3. Just don't expect any of that to come cheap, as bidding is already topping the $1,500 mark with six days left, though you do also get pretty impressive collection of Metal Gear swag with it, and 15% of the proceeds will go to help the Child's Play charity

Ok Sony has just released an update to the PSP Firmware which brings it up to 5.01. This update fixes an issue with larger memory sticks(8 gb and 16 gb) having problems download from PSN Store.
Actual Quote:
When downloading content from the Store to a PSP with an 8 GB or 16 GB Memory Stick Duo media inserted, you may see a message indicating that the media does not have enough free space, even when sufficient space exists. Update 5.01 resolves this issue and will be coming soon.
Well You can update through network update or go to the official website and download the eboot.
**As of now only the Japanese website has it so, heres the translated version:
http://translate.google.com/translat...lr%3D%26sa%3DN
*Note
Also there was an issue where many had updated but couldn't access the PSN Store but I 've included the files to be flashed on 5.00 CFW for you to be able to access it

Capcom, teasingly, has told us Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix will arrive on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 "very soon".
The publisher couldn't clarify an exact date, however - presumably due to unpredictable XBLA and PSN certification processes.
SSFII Turbo HD Remix is, of course, a revamp of the fighting game from 1994 - the first of the series to feature Akuma and super combo moves. Super Street Fighter II also introduced characters Cammy, Dee Jay, Fei Long and T. Hawk, while the Turbo part of the name added faster and more difficult combat.
The HD Remix brings 1080p redrawn graphics to the gable, plus a remixed OCR soundtrack and plenty of OCD tweaks to the painstakingly balanced fighting formula.

Orochi_X let me know via PM on the Lavalit forums that a new version of Openbor has been released, heres whats new:
V2.2038
New Animations
Rise# , riseb , rises Rise animations are now dynamic. They also include riseb and rises for rising from a burning or shock knockdown attack respectively. If rise# is omitted , we default to the standard rise anim.
Blockpain# , blockpainb , blockpains - As above , but for blockpain. If blockpain# is omitted , we default to blockpain. If anim blockpain is omitted , we default to the old style of replaying the block anim.
chipdeath - If you have chipdamage enabled and you are killed whilst blocking , you can use this animation. Makes a nice "cheap K.O." animation! Defaults to the death anim that corresponds to the attack which killed the entity.
Entity Header Command
jugglepoints - The total amount of juggle points an entity has. Defaults to 0. Setting Jugglepoints to -1 will make this entity immune to juggles. See below for more details.
Attack Commands
jugglecost - If the victim is in the air and the attacker's jugglecost is equal to or lower than the victim's total jugglepoints , the attack will connect. If this happens , the jugglecost is subtracted from the victim's juggle points giving them a new (lower) total. If the next attack's jugglecost is still lower than the new value , that too will connect , lowering the total points again. Once jugglecost is higher than the remaining jugglepoints , the attack will not connect.
Defaults to 0.
OTG - setting this to 1 will allow an attack to hit opponents in their lying state. The default , 0 , will not allow an attack to hit a lying opponent , regardless of bbox settings.
Fixes and Alterations
Setting {nospecial} to 1 in a level header will now no longer disable freespecials. Also , I've expanded the option so that setting it at 2 will , infact , disable freespecials too.
Falling entities now have nograb enabled by default.
Single set mods now auto load that set instead of going through the rather redundant motions of selecting it.
Fix by DC - didhitscript now executes when item is collected (item is attacker, collecting entity is defender). Item scripting won't have to be nearly as hacky.

Hi MotorStorm fans! One week to go until the launch of MotorStorm Pacific Rift. Hopefully you’ve been getting some good information on the game from Nigel and the team from Evolution Studios in their weekly MotorStorm Monday posts.
If you haven’t seen it yet, please keep your eyes out for the recently completed commercial of MotorStorm Pacific Rift. In an effort to introduce the new, remote island location, there were a few real-life Stormers who strapped into their ATVs, bikes, buggies and trucks and jumped from a C-130 Hercules at 10,000 feet in an effort to start the invasion of Pacific Rift. No special effects on this jump … just pure adrenaline and gritty attitude.
Check out the commercial above along with some photos from the shoot.

BioShock forces you to question the lengths to which you will go and how much of your humanity you will sacrifice...to save your own life.
BioShock is loaded with some of greatest, most modifiable weapons to ever blast their way into a shooter. But guns alone won’t be enough to defeat the devious AIs of Rapture. There are literally hundreds of other strategies players can use to take out his enemies.
