It's not all doom and gloom in the Sony financial camp, as the manufacturer has announced (via Reuters) that PlayStation Portable sales for the fiscal year, ending March 2009, would exceed forecast figures. The PSP, which recently saw its second revision find success in Japan despite a screen scanline issue feature, is now expected to sell 16 million -- and not a previously expected 15 million -- units within the complete fiscal year. Thanks, one million additional, potential buyers!

Variety writes that during an interview with EA Games president Frank Gibeau and EA Redwood Shores general manager Glenn Schofield, the duo spoke openly of plans for sequels to both Dead Space and Army of Two. According to the report, EA is also planning a direct follow-up to Battlefield: Bad Company.
Given the (so far) generally sterling reviews of Dead Space, combined with internal enthusiasm about the IP, a sequel to the sci-fi shock-fest isn't exactly a surprise. Neither is Bad Company, which has both reviewed and sold rather well. Army of Two is the head-scratcher, though. The game released to decent reviews, but was by no means a runaway hit. Still, anyone who's played it can see the potential for fleshing out some of its co-op concepts into a (hopefully better) sequel. Army of Two ... 2?

Hey there, budget-conscious gamers: the Vii didn't quite pan out the way we'd all hoped, but we just want you to know you still don't have to spend $500 or wait for a PS3 Slim to hit the shelves to have a gaming experience worthy of 2008. Just pick Sonilex -- it's a fraction of the size of the PS3, and at around 32 bucks even the most stingy gamer can splurge for it. Word is 41 "NES games" have been released for Sonilex this year alone (probably piled into that odd-looking cart on the left there), including, incredibly but really, the unauthorized NES port of "Tekken." After all, the game cart says "2008" on it so you know you're getting the absolute cutting edge of NES games -- like, ones that were never even released until just now, okay? No word on Blu-ray though. That's a deal-breaker if you ask us.

news from engadget
Hackers, like life, will find a way. Sony knows that all too well thanks to the PSP, but so far the PlayStation 3 has stood strong in the face of legions of nerds trying to find a way to exploit it. A potentially major breakthrough may have been made, though, as well-known PS3 hacker StreetskaterFU (we've no idea what he's going for with that name -- really) has managed to decrypt the beta client for Sony's PlayStation Home service. Curious devs can now poke around in the files looking for a way to exploit the newish in-game XMB functionality, potentially allowing homebrew apps and game backups without hard drive swapping. There's no guarantee it will lead anywhere in the end, but you don't care either way, right? Our upstanding readership would never participate in such heinously illegal activities.
From a homebrew point of view this could be very interesting

Remember that time we said we were giving away Resistance 2 beta keys and we didn't? Sorry about that. But at least we made up for it that other time we finally got around to handing them out. All 7,000 in fact.
Anyway, if you didn't get lucky first time, we've got some good news. In conjunction with Sony, we've managed to wrangle an extra 1,500 beta keys exclusively for our European readers and we'll be tossing them in your general direction later this evening.
You simply need to be a registered IGN user to get in on the action so, if you're not already, go get signed up! We'll be updating this story with download details as soon as the keys go live so get those F5 fingers at the ready and let the fun begin!

Developer doublesix is bringing a fresh new arcade title to the PlayStation Network, with Burn Zombie Burn! being bought to the PlayStation 3 towards the end of this January.
Looking like a welcome marriage of Smash TV with hordes of the undead, it's a high-score based game that's got it's tongue wedged firmly in its cheek. Taking a healthy dose of inspiration from schlocky American horror films, Burn Zombie Burn! takes a top-down view on six arenas chockfull of zombies, with players choosing between three characters to tackle the undead swarms.
There's an added element of risk and reward at the games heart – burning zombies with explosives earns a greater score multiplier, but a zombie on fire is faster and more dangerous. But that's just common sense.
Available for up to two players, Burn Zombie Burn! is coming early next year on PlayStation Network – to find out more head over to our Q&A with the game's creative director Jim Mummery, or check out the exclusive trailer.

Pandemic has released a Trophy patch for Mercenaries 2 on PS3.
The update, v1.02, adds 40 Trophies, according to PlayStation LifeStyle. And each reward is named after a heavy metal song.
Of the 40, 24 are bronze, 11 are silver, and four are gold. Collect the lot, and you'll receive the coveted platinum Trophy.
These are not awarded retroactively, so earning them means wading through this quite uninspiring sequel again - not that that will stop the hardened Trophy harvesters.
Head over to our Mercenaries 2 review for a more detailed analysis.

It's patch city and LittleBigPlanet's the mayor! After this morning's news of a 1.01 patch, heroic reader Luke informs us that 1.02 is now available.
This one does neuter Tourmani Diabaté's song "Tapha Niang", silencing the two lyrics borrowed from the Qur'an, putting the game into the state it will presumably be when you all get hold of it in two weeks' time. In actual fact, it removes the entire vocal track, leaving a pleasant instrumental.
There's no word on what else the patch does, but then you won't notice, since the game isn't out yet. Unless you're in the secret club, obviously, in which case you can join us sulking about how the game servers aren't online yet.
Check out our LittleBigPlanet review to keep your eyes on the prize.

New update of the PSX Game Loader from Dark ALex
popsloader for 5.00 M33-2 and up (until Sony screws it again)
Requeiments:
- 5.00 M33-2, it won't work in 5.00 M33-1
New:
- Works on 5.00.
- Added 3.80, 3.90 and 4.01.
- Upgrade from older version of popsloader:
* Copy seplugins to memstick root folder replacing files.
* Dump 4.01 (choose decrypt all option in psardumper) and copy the file impose.prx in /seplugins/popsloader/ with that name (impose.prx, without numbers)
- Install from scratch:
* Copy seplugins to memstick root folder replacing files.
* Dump the desired firmware to extract the files needed. (choose decrypt all option in psardumper)
Thse are the files needed for each firmware:
3.02-3.03: /kd/pops.prx, /kd/popsman.prx, /kd/meaudio.prx, /vsh/module/pafmini.prx
3.10-3.30: /kd/pops.prx, /kd/popsman.prx, /vsh/module/pafmini.prx
3.40-4.01: /kd/pops.prx, /kd/popsman.prx, /vsh/module/pafmini.prx, /vsh/module/libpspvmc.prx
* Copy the files to /seplugins/popsloader with firmware version as suffix (e.g. popsman.prx -> popsman380.prx)
* Additionally, no matter which pops you want to run, you have to get impose.prx from 4.01 and
copy it to /seplugins/popsloader/ with the name impose.prx (no suffix).

New update of the Custom Firmware from Dark ALex
Changes:
- Popcorn bug fixes
* Fixed bug that caused some games with certain icons not to work, and caused document.dat not to work.
* Fixed critical bug that caused continous corruption of psx games in RAM.
- Core bugfix: Fixed sctrlKernelSetInit* functions not working.
- M33 network update doesn't work in 5.00 M33, fixed.
- Added the posibility of loading version information from the file flash0:/vsh/etc/version.txt
By default is disabled. If you enable it in recovery, you could for example dump 5.01 firmware,
copy the version.txt from it to the flash, and bypass firmware check restrictions like those that
may be in psn, etc.
This will also fake official network update (not m33 one), and running the update eboot (again, not m33 ones).
- Plugins configuration file format changed.
The new format is as follows:
* There is no more conf.bin file.
* Now each line in vsh.txt game.txt and pops.txt will have a 0 or a 1 at the end. 1 indicates
that the plugin will be loaded, 0 (or anything else) that it won't be loaded.
Entering in recovery in 5.00 M33-2 wil automatically convert the old format configuration
to the new one (this may cause a delay first time you enter in plugins because of conversion).
- Added optins under advanced configuration that allow enable/disable of plugins in a certain configuration.
By default they are enabled.

News/release from Torch
This increases the vertical scrolling speed of the XMB by around 50%. You can scroll 300 songs in 10 seconds using this. This is the maximum possible speed that can be achieved without directly hacking vshmain.prx.
Changelog Beta-2:
Now only activates when the music player is open. When you open another part of the XMB, it will deactivate and the M33 VSHMenu will be restored. VSHMenu will not work while in the music player.
Changed name to "Fast Scroll Music".
