Sony's PlayStation Eye “More Precise” Than Microsoft's Project Natal

No doubt the major talk of E3 2009 was all about the motion-sensing technologies demoed by Sony and Microsoft at their press conferences. Microsoft’s Project Natal’s major selling point is full-body recognition and the promise of a controller-less game experience, while Sony’s PlayStation Eye-powered motion tech aims to turn a single controller into any virtual item imaginable (i.e. swords, tennis racquets, whips, whiskey bottle, etc.).

Well, it certainly didn't take long for some classic politicking to emerge regarding the technologies. Sony’s director of marketing John Holler told Gamasutra that the PlayStation Eye is “more accurate and more precise” than Microsoft’s motion-sensing tech, and, even though Project Natal’s full-body scanning capabilities are “impressive,” it also, allegedly, suffers from “depth issues on the Z-axis.”

This assessment is obviously impossible to confirm until some impartial testing can be done, so I’ll just have to take Holler’s comments with a PS3-emblazoned grain of salt for now. What’s perhaps more interesting about this whole ridiculously premature debate about technologies that are still years away from landing in living rooms is that Project Natal certainly does seem designed to out-casual the casual gaming genre Nintendo ushered in with the Wii, while Sony’s approach looks to be more “gamer-oriented,” as one analyst told Gamasutra earlier this week.

Again, it’s far too early to tell what the results will be when Sony and Microsoft eventually release their respective motion-sensing technologies, so for now, it looks like we’ll have to settle for premature potshots and unconfirmed tech assessments. Lucky us.

FFXIII's Shiva Sisters Have Names

Final Fantasy XIII breaks from series tradition is many ways, but one could make an argument that the way summons are handled is the most surprising.

As revealed by Square Enix staff during interview sessions at E3, you don't just summon FFXIII summons. You ride them!

Snow's summon was previously announced to be Shiva. The FFXIII version of Shiva differs from past Shivas, though, in that she's made up of two girls, one with a white face, and one with a black face. The latest issue of Jump has provided us with their names.

The one with the black face is Styria. She's the older of the two. The one with the white face is Nix (possibly named after the IGN writer -- we're not sure). Nix is the younger of the two.

You might have noticed this in the extended E3 trailer, but when Snow calls Styria and Nix out, they can either fight alongside him like a normal summon, or merge into a motorcycle for Snow to ride. When riding Shiva, the battle system switches to "Driving Mode." Subsequent attacks require that you press special button combinations to perform such moves as "Auto Drive" (Circle), Wheelie Rush (Up + Circle), Air Edge (X) and Diamond Dust (Triangle). This phase of the battle appears to be time constrained.

There's still a lot of mystery surrounding the game's Driving Mode. Will you get to ride everyone? If so, what will Lightning's summon Odin, shown in playable form at the Microsoft press conference, transform into?

As revealed during interviews at E3, FFXIII is 60% complete and is gearing up for a Japanese release this Winter with a world release to follow in the Spring. Expect details to start flowing shortly.

Impressions: Heavy Rain

Heavy Rain is not your typical game -- the experience promises to change and morph throughout the different scenes. While the Taxidermist and Mad Jack scenes are reasonably similar, with our protagonists infiltrating areas for clues and then making their escape after being discovered, the new scene shown off at E3 by Quantic Dream's David Cage illustrated how situations and gameplay styles will differ throughout.

This new scene does exactly what it says on the tin. Named "Madison At The Blue Lagoon," it follows the exploits of our female protagonist, Madison -- who you may recognise from the Taxidermist scene -- at a busy club called the Blue Lagoon. Madison has gone in search of the club's owner, Paco, in order to get new information regarding something. As usual, Quantic Dream's David Cage is appropriately cagey about giving away too much of the story.

In contrast to the other scenes we've been shown, which have involved only a couple of characters at a time, the Blue Lagoon is packed full of people. Madison weaves through them naturally and realistically as she makes her way through the dancing throng towards the bar. This game's graphical fidelity tends to range from "incredible" to "a bit iffy," but this scene looked great, despite the relatively large number of characters on screen. With a Q1 2010 release date and with the game 70% done, there's still time to iron out any graphical kinks.

Tecmo unveils Undead Knights for PSP

Tecmo has whipped the wrappers off PSP action game Undead Knights, which is set to launch this autumn.

Undead Knights casts players as evil heroes Romulus, Remus and his wife Silvia who each makes a pact with a demon to be resurrected after being murdered for speaking out against the Queen.

Not only are they walking and talking again, but they've been granted the power to resurrect their own army of 10 zombies from fallen enemies - even boss characters - to do their bidding. They can be clumped together to form ladders or bridges, or thrown at larger enemies to cling-on and weigh them down.

Romulus, Remus and Silvia are no slouches in battle themselves and are played interchangeably as the campaign unfolds in typical third-person hack-and-slash style.

Ad-hoc multiplayer for four friends will be supported and feature a variety of modes including zombie tossing deathmatch, which sounds novel.

Modern Warfare 2 is direct sequel

Infinity Ward has clarified that Modern Warfare 2 is meant to be a direct sequel, which a first for the Call of Duty franchise.

Speaking to MTV Multiplayer, IW community speaker Robert Bowling said the name Modern Warfare 2 was picked to illustrate just that.

"This is a direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. That is what we are trying to get across to our audience. It's not just another one in the Call of Duty franchise," he said.

"This has never happened in Call of Duty before. They're typically their own campaigns and totally unrelated to the previous one. This one, is indeed a direct sequel and we just want to make that clear."

Modern Warfare 2 launches for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on 10th November.

Sony arming PSP to directly take on the DS market

Sony’s handheld enterprise transformed to allow cheaper development on smaller, casual and niche titles

Sony has transformed its entire outlook on PSP development in a bid to broaden the range of titles available on PSP consoles, to provide its PSP Go system with its own identity, and ultimately to establish a direct rival to Nintendo’s 100 million-selling rival handheld, the Nintendo DS.

Sony recently released a company statement centred on two key objectives; that PSP development should be cheap, and that the PSP should be hosting a catalogue of niche indie titles as well as casual games for broader audiences.

The measures are a far cry from the reputation the original PSP once established; being a handheld that offered watered-down PS2 titles which, while still a technical feat, were often considered too bloated and unfocused for the commuting gamer.

Meanwhile, the platform holder has seen its rival Nintendo dominate the handheld market with cheap titles that are dedicated for a handheld audience.

With a tiny development team, a small budget and a slim timeline, Nintendo managed to deliver Brain Training; a divisive game that has nonetheless sold many millions of copies.

This is the market that Sony is calling for its fleet of partners and developers to enter, arming each with budget-priced dev kits and test kits. On top of this, the micro-sized PSP Go is positioned as a less intimidating, carefree system for the digital age, clearly designed with Nintendo’s casual DS audience in mind.

At E3 Sony announced that it has made a staggering 80 percent price cut in PSP dev kits, with models DTP-T2000A and DTP-T2000 now both priced at $1,500 in North America and €1,200 in Europe.
Develop has today reported that Sony will also be cutting its test kit costs to €800 and $1,000.

But the company’s new plans to replicate Nintendo’s success does not end with price cuts; Sony will also be providing a free add-on to its SDK in the shape of ProDG, a programming tool which Sony states is held in high regard among developers.

In its written statement, the company makes its ambitions abundantly clear; “to support a broader range of developers and publishers” and “to create varieties of small software titles”.

Beyond these measures Sony has also implied, slightly ambiguously, that it aims to further streamline the development process for PSN titles – “from license agreement to publishing” – for its “small, download-exclusive software titles.”

The aim again is clear: “more casual, exciting and attractive content to be made available for the ever-growing PlayStation Network”.

Rockstar: Exclusivity does work

Boss Ben Feder speaks of his confidence in Sony and the support they will offer PS3 exclusive Agent
Take 2 Interactive and Rockstar president Ben Feder has been waxing lyrical about platform holder Sony in the wake of the news that upcoming title Agent will be a PS3 exclusive.
“The trade-offs a publisher will typically make is, if you're platform-agnostic, you get a larger installed base,” Feder told GameSpot. “You're platform exclusive when you get the right kind of support from first parties.
“At this phase in the cycle, when you're trying to launch a new franchise, exclusivity can really help you launch the franchise. It can give you the kind of platform that you need to start exclusive, start in the right kind of way with the right kind of partner. Exclusivity does work.
“I have a lot of confidence in Sony. I have a lot of confidence in their ability to lead the market, as they always have. Their console is a terrific platform to be developing for, and Agent is a great testament as to our belief in what that platform can do, and what they can do with us as part of a partnership.”
Agent is currently in development at Grand Theft Auto IV studio Rockstar North, and whilst little is known of the title as of yet, its pedigree alone already makes it a must-watch title.

“We think Agent has the potential to be yet another great Rockstar North franchise title,” Feder added.
“It's the Houser Brothers and Rockstar North. It's the A team working on a triple-A title. I think the subject matter, the characters, the story, the environment, the background – all the elements are there. It's such a rich environment to play in.”

PSP Go lacks mini USB, compatibility with existing accessories, common sense

Confession time: we weren't exactly charmed by Sony's PSP Go when Sony made the thing official. It's not that we're particularly fond of UMD (quite the contrary as a matter of fact), rather we found it a little hard to stomach a slimmer device that offers nearly the same hardware as its predecessor, swapping an optical drive for more storage, yet will cost nearly twice as much. Factor in the cost of all new accessories and things get even less appealing, with confirmation that the Go lacks a standard mini USB port on top, meaning things like PSP keyboards and Sony's GPS accessory are on a fast-track to obsolescence. Even current A/V cables and chargers won't work thanks to a new multifunction port on the base -- but Sony will be quite happy to sell you new ones. Is this the price of progress, or an attempt to boost profit margins? It's not good news for gamers, regardless.

The Code Tactics team have released v0.04 of the 3D helicopter shooter, Apollonia.

* Chase camera - The default camera view is from behind the helicopter, rather than from isometrically above. The original (retro) camera view can be selected from the controls screen.

Known Issues
* Sometimes there is incorrect textures loaded (very elusive).
* Three Player Profile limit.
* High memory usage. Beware of too many PSP background processes.
* Suspend mode not supported.
* There is a delay between the mission being won/lost and the scoreboard being visible. This is because of the time taken to write data to the database.
* Slow load times; about 8 seconds (minus Sony logo).
* Some instances of near plane clipping of the terrain resulting in small amounts of unrenedered terrain.

This release has been a really tough one and has had a stupid amount of hours spent on it.

We have a huge amount of stuff planned for this game; the addition of sqlite support opens up huge RPG possibilities. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy v0.04.

As always, I'd like to thank those amazing hackers out there that allow us less hacky people to make something that is all-time-consuming. We also welcome any ideas or feedback you would like to share.

Memory Manager BETA 0.2

This program will allow your psp to load faster and run smoother.

the way the program works is it changes the settings so instead of loading everything on your psp at once it loads the different parts up as you use them.For Example : No need to have the video player loaded up if your not using it right?
There you go, psp goes faster now.

Completely Safe and safe to use with all current firmwares. It has not been tested on HEN yet but I know it is completely safe to use.

This is only the first release and I will be adding to it. At the moment you get about a 8-10
percent speed-up but I hope to get that up to at least 50%. Enjoy!!!

Installation.

Put the memory manager folder into your game folder and run.

Happy Times ?? Take the Battery OUT! :-P

Lua PSP Mario - The New Worlds demo

Homebrew developer dan369 released his homebrew application early this this morning. The feature's of this ported classic consists of, from the developer:

-my own little animation function (taken from a mini - animation lib I made)
-Most of the classic animation is there (the walking, jumping etc. )
-Breakable blocks (brick)
-Solid blocks
-Question mark blocks (do change to solid if you collide no coins yet though)
-Jumping blocks (isn't the same as in classic Mario with the spring though)
-Uses a Tile map system
-Has Gaps in the floor as-well like classic Mario games
-Has the scenery from classic Mario games (including clouds, bushes etc.)
-Better graphics (doesn't use the classics Mario 8 bit gfx)

Note: Remember this is only a demo, certain things in-game will be changed/added as soon as i can get round to it. This only has 1 level which is a re-make of the first Mario level in Super Mario Bros. for the NES. I have also made a level-editor for this but right now it isn't 100%. Also the system for added custom levels hasn't been done yet.

alex_e Just released his final version of flash spacer. For you guys who dont know what this handy application does, Flash Spacer free's up some flash space in your PSP flash memory. This is handy for users who have the PSP100 in which the internal memory is limited to a measley 32MB. Flash Spacer has its final release with all these features:

Dumps flash0 upon entry to later restore if needed.
Allows to create a raw dump of your Lflash (flash0 , 1 and 2")
Remove the DIC directory (asian fonts), Location Free Player and the built in web browser.
Restore's flash2 files (PSN details).
Install a custom flash0 XMB.
Flash a custom gameboot.
Restore the original Sony gameboot.
Remove the Rss.

RPG Demo V3

There's not much of an update but I thought you guys would like to see my very early framework of the town/overworld. There are very little collisions defined so when I mean early I mean early. It only took 4 hours, thats how early so don't expect much. Though I'm happy with it because I think it feels like final fantasy. I think it feels good. I also fixed a problem in the battle system where you couldn't pick who you wanted to attack with magic. Now you can pick who, not that it matters to the player at this point.

[What is this?]
This is a spoofer (aka faker) for the information found in the XMB->Settings->System Settings->System Information. This version supports the firmwares of 5.00 and 5.02 and includes spoofing of both System Version and Mac Address. So you can personalize the XMB Information for whatever you need, including your own imaginary "8.32342 0xDEADBEEF" firmware and matching mac address.

- Automatic detection of character set (Ascii/ansi or Unicode*)
- Added 5.02 GEN-A support
- Added Mac Address editing

[Install]
Copy the "version_spoofer.prx" to the "seplugins" folder on your MEMORY STICK and add a line to vsh.txt (or create one within seplugins folder) and add the line "ms0:/seplugins/sysconf_spoofer.prx 1" and then make a "spoofversion.txt" and/or a "spoofmac.txt" in seplugins folder. Within these, write your hearts desire; with either ascii (normal text) or Unicode* (special characters). Reboot your PSP, and be amazed at your system information.

PCSX2 Beta 1329 - PS2 Emulator for Windows

The PCSX2 Team have released a new public beta of their PS2 Emulator for Windows:

Changelog
- Microvu added as an additional cpu option. To use it, enable both the new options in the cpu tab. Expect problems.
- Quite some work on vif, gif and path 3. Quite a few of the games that had problems with 1190 due to this should now work.
- Increased the EErec's stack memory from 64k to 128k, since there's no reason to be frugal there anymore
- Improved the cpu speed/ghz detection. It should be a bit more accurate, and is faster (pcsx2 startup times are near instantaneous now)
- Some emitter changes
- Some general cleanups to vtlb's memory protection and recompiled block
integrity checking systems.
- Usual code cleanups and optimizations

Known issues:
Front mission 4 hangs
Ar tonelico 1 hangs
Many Gust games show black screen (ar tonelico 2, atelier iris 3...). To solve, press F1 when that happens (yeah, random... but hey it kinda works)
