A panel of games industry veterans have given their final verdict on Sony's PSP Go. David Perry thinks the handheld is an excellent step in the right direction, though he wants it to include free-to-play games. Andrew Oliver of Blitz Games Studios was also optimistic: 'The iPod has demonstrated that, given a nice small device and a good interface and easy buying process, people are happy to download content. I think this will work and move gamers to accepting legal digital downloads, which is the way we want the market to go.' In total, a panel of eight developers discussed four key issues surrounding the handheld, including whether or not they will develop for it

Koei repackaged the two Warriors Orochi games and added a few characters like Sanzang Fashi who attacks with her sleeves to make Musou Orochi Z for the PlayStation 3. The game came out in Japan in March, but it won’t cross the Pacific.
Since the Warriors Orochi Z wasn’t at E3 I spoke to Koei about it. At one time Koei planned on localizing Musou Orochi Z as Warriors Orochi: The Collective. A representative from Koei confirmed that the rumor Siliconera discovered was on the mark, but plans for the project have been shelved. Warriors Orochi: The Collective, Musou Orochi Z, Warriors Orochi Z or whatever name you know the game by is stuck in Japan, which makes Musou Orochi Z the first Omega Force developed Warriors game not to get an overseas release.

Unlike all the dozens of Warriors games Warriors: Legends of Troy is not being handled by Omega Force. Koei’s Canada studio is developing the title, which is a blend of Dynasty Warriors and Greek mythology.
The story is based on the Trojan War and Koei plans on taking some creative liberties with the setting. A representative from Koei coyly answered my question about fighting non human enemies with, “Yes, there will be mythological creatures.”
Koei Canada is working with a different set of tools than the other Warriors games and plan to tweak the formula the existing formula. For the first time heroes can equip shields and use them to bash foes. Paris (pictured) and other characters can scrounge around and use weapons from their fallen foes. Warriors: Legends of Troy also has online support for four players, which is a key addition for me. I don’t think I can trudge through another Dynasty Warriors style game solo. These kinds of games are always more fun when playing with a friend.
Warriors: Legends of Troy is slated for release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in spring 2010.

Tecmo might have created an entirely new genre with their PSP title Undead Knight - the zombie tosser.
Announced during E3, I got my first look at Undead Knight early on during the show, with a helpful Tecmo rep playing through a mission while I watched. The game blends hack and slash gameplay, anime design, and a heavy metal soundtrack with a unique zombie-conversion mechanic that adds a little bit of strategy to the mix.
Little was revealed about the story, something about a journey of vengeance against the king or some such, instead focusing on the game play aspects of the title. The player takes on the role of one of three anti-hero characters - the armored tank, the lithe rogue, or the speedy female mage-looking character, as they hack and slash through enemy ranks. The twist here is that as they fight, they have the option of turning their enemies into zombies, who then fight by their side.
While I was most intrigued by the two human characters, only the large, armored monstrosity was available for the demo, and after a brief bout of PSP blue-screen (it was a very early build) we were underway.
Using relatively simple controls, the demo-driver waded into modest groups of enemies, cutting a bloody swath through them to demonstrate the basic combat. They he grabbed one, hit a button, a BAM, instant zombie slave. The zombie fought on his own, but could also be picked up and thrown at enemies for even more damage. After converting a few more zombies he had an army going, with somewhere between 6-8 going at any given time.
The zombies aren't just fighters and weapons, however. They are also integral to puzzles and boss fights. Some gates require a certain number of zombies be attacking them before they are destroyed, sort of like the portions of Ratchet and Clank in which Clank controls tiny robots. During the boss fight I watched, the character tossed zombies onto a huge enemy, weighing him down so the player could step in and attack.
Graphically the game is on par with your older PSP games - it won't be challenging Chains of Olympus any time soon, but the atmosphere was interesting, and the game mechanics intriguing. I'll have to see much more of Undead Knight before my interest is fully piqued, but it's off to a fine start.

Sony has said that its as-yet unnamed PS3 motion controller and the PlayStation Eye combo will cover off all the bases and remain relevant, despite Microsoft's hopes for hands-free Project Natal gaming.
"It's not only relevant," US marketing boss Peter Dille said to Kotaku about the wand, "[but] from our perspective we have the technology that provides better precision."
That, he said, "gives us the opportunity to do the best of both worlds". "If you want to do what we're referring to as casual motion games, the PlayStation Eye and the motion controller do that quite nicely."
Sony's E3 press conference - the last of the usual Big Three - saw the platform holder unveil the technology, and the prototype wand with buttons on it, which combined with the camera allows for "millimetre precision". Enough to do handwriting, archery and other difficult gestures.
Despite the strength of the on-stage demo, though, the Sony controller lost the column-inches war to the dreamier vision of Microsoft's Project Natal, which aims to remove the controller from the equation entirely.
Neither product has any particularly advanced games associated with it yet (Lionhead's Milo & Kate looking like more of a prototype), and neither has been seen outside of controlled conditions, but both companies have said that development kits are on the way, or already with, third parties.

June 9th, 2009, 17:36 Posted By: wraggster
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss Andrew House has said more people will "upgrade" to PS3 as time goes on and the cost of the console comes down.
"If you look back at previous lifecycles, like PS2 versus N64 [sic], we have lots of data that suggests that lots of people bought into N64 as their entry level gaming device, and were happy to upgrade to a more powerful machine later in the life cycle when the price point was right for them," he told Edge Online.
"I think we’re going to see this later on PS3, and the fact that it’s a Blu-ray player as well and that there’s a [greater] wealth of network based experiences than are perhaps available on the device they already have will add to the proposition."
House then banged on some more about the ten-year life cycle, and how the new motion-sensing controller shown at E3 will make everything all right. Not to mention the PSP Go. But what about that PS3 price cut, mighty House?
"I think you have to position price points around business facing issues like profitability, but I put that in the context of a long life cycle," he said.
"The great thing for me is that European consumers have understood the total value proposition that you get with PS3, not focused solely on pricing. We will have to constantly monitor that and make adjustments when all the factors come into play and make the right decisions at the right time."
In other words: look, at least you get a free box.

June 9th, 2009, 17:32 Posted By: wraggster
Sony's newly appointed president and CEO of Europe has said that he doesn't believe the price of the PSP Go will harm sales on release later this year.
Asked whether the EUR 249 price may act as a barrier to purchase in a repeat of the slow uptake that hampered the luxury-priced PlayStation 3, House said that Europe wasn't traditionally a price driven market.
"I don't think so," he offered, admitting, "If it's cheaper would we sell more? The answer would probably be yes."
House said that consumers understand the hardware is worth the asking price, allowing them to buy into a system that will be supported for at least ten years, and allows easy access to content through a convenient digital network.
"I think on PlayStation 3, and the potential with an extension of PSP, we've got an opportunity to go even further on that. The overall value proposition which, by the way, European consumers get very, very well, I don't think they are as price driven as other markets.
"So the overall value proposition is really strong and trends towards that lifecycle. And then you've got for the first time a networked community for the business and the strength that implies. That's a huge factor in retaining people for a longer lifecycle with the product they have, because now they've bought into not just a packaged media relationship with games, but they're bought into a community that they're sharing with people and they're interacting with."
House refused to discuss a UK price for the system, even though the hardware has been given an RRP for Europe and North America, stating only that “We'll give it full and due consideration at the price point that we think is right for the business model and the consumer.”

June 9th, 2009, 17:30 Posted By: wraggster
Sony has said that it hopes to attract new developers to the PSP Go by drastically reducing the price of the software development kit, in an effort to bring in talent already flocking to new, cheaper opportunities such as Apple's iPhone
Speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony Europe's new president and CEO Andrew House said the PSP Go will stand strong against handheld competition as it's one of the first dedicated games machines to embrace a purely digital format.
"On balance it was a conscious decision to think that with portable devices in particular there's a certain opportunity there to find new and different talent. And that the cost of the SDK could be a barrier to entry for that. So let's explore that, let's remove that barrier or reduce it and see if that has an effect in terms of letting us tap into a new set of talent there," offered House, in an interview published today.
"It wasn't specifically targeted towards one platform or another. Some of the other devices including the iPhone are primarily productivity devices. They have some limited form of entertainment thrown in. That's not the space that we're in. Everything about the PSP Go says it's primarily an entertainment device and a gaming device."
He added: "As we move to a network device, as we move to consumers who are very aware of downloading content and accessing that over the internet as their primary source, that leads you down the path of seeing there's other development talent out there that we could probably tap into. So let's make the SDK more affordable and let's explore it."
As well as new talent, Sony expects current publishing and development partners will reassess Sony's handheld business and come back to the PSP format.
"The publishing and development community sees us as taking something of a leadership stance by taking a bold step of introducing a portable device that has no packaged media component against it, because we think there is enough of a market there and enough of a model.
"With all due respect to publishers, I hope that's what they would expect from a platform holder – to take that leadership stance and start to explore and build a market they can take advantage of."
Despite the system providing purely digital content, House said that Sony is keen to include its retail partners in the business – suggesting selling pre-paid cards or vouchers in stores as one way of including traditional retail in the business, and citing Sony Online Entertainment's recent success with Free Realms as an example.
"I'm a firm believer in things like vouchers and cards at retail – other ways in which you can turn essentially a relationship with a network into a sold good at retail," said House.
"It's new and different territory for us, but I think we've got a long enough history with retail partners that we've got a degree of trust there and we want them to participate. It's going to require some collaboration and promotional thinking.
"An example that looms large is Sony Online Entertainment, that has for years pursued a by and large network only model, does an enormous business in network access cards available at retail. The margin is great, the trade margin is good and everyone is happy with that," he added.
The full interview with Andrew House, where he also discusses the pricing model of the PSP Go, keeping the PSP 3000 on the market at the same time and the early product line-up for the new system, can be read here.

Capcom’s Chris Kramer says new title has been designed with PSPgo in mind
Publisher Capcom has pressed the big red button on its pre-release hype for the already hugely anticipated Resident Evil Portable for PSP, claiming that the game is a radical departure from any other title in the series to date.
Other than the fact that it exists, details regarding Resident Evil’s PSP debut were very thin on the ground at Sony’s E3 press conference.
Speaking on his blog, Capcom’s Chris Kramer said of the game: “It's not a ‘remake’ of a previous RE game, but an all-new title created specifically for the PSP platform, with the PSPgo in mind.
“I've managed to sneak a look at a very early game design document for this title and all I am allowed to say is ‘wow, it’s totally different for a Resident Evil game’.
“The game is some ways off, so don't be expecting this one to come home with you when you upgrade to the PSPgo in the fall. I can tell you that Capcom is working very closely with Sony on this title, as it's something that both companies have wanted on the PSP for quite some time.”

The PSP's line-up has gone from the sparse offering of last year to the bursting 2009 roster because of Sony's "leading by example", says new SCEE boss Andrew House.
Speaking in an interview with Edge-Online, the Euro PlayStation head said that the role of the platform-holder is "to demonstrate what's possible" on its platforms.
"When I look at Sony's resources, I see there's a significant need to support PSP and make sure there's a good grounding there," he said.
"Now that's established, there's an opportunity for us to say, 'Let's look at PSP again, let's make sure we're putting in the right resources,' and I think that's been mirrored in the development community. PSP Go, I think, adds to that. It says there's new innovation on PSP, new consumers.
"It probably has more potential as a broader entertainment device than most competitors you see out there," he said. "Let's make sure that we're developing games and taking advantage of that."
Last week Sony showcased LittleBigPlanet, Gran Turismo and MotorStorm Arctic Edge, among others.

Modern Warfare 2 may seem to capture the chaos you'd imagine of war - and look stunningly realistic too - but studio head Vince Zampella says Infinity Ward aims for entertainment, not simulation.
"We go for authenticity not realism," Zampella told Official PlayStation Magazine. "We're not making a sim, we're making entertainment. We want it to look real like an action movie."
Zamplella explains why the futuristic weapons, like a tripod gun that uses lasers to detect and shoot enemies, don't ruin the game's authenticity. "You see a guy in an action movie, what he does is a little over the top. It makes for a great movie."
Elsewhere in OPM's huge 11-page feature, the mag details an open-world level set in Brazil, which it describes as a "huge sprawling shanty town full of multiple routes and areas." But IW won't go overboard with open-world mechanics, insists Zampella.
"We do it where it fits and doesn't make the game worse," he explained. "There isn't any mandate that every level has to be a wide open sandbox. There are certain levels like this where it fits naturally."
Put its November 10 release in your diary (if you're female). Or just write it in permanent marker on your FACE.
