Sony America marketeer Peter Dille claims that development kits for the motion-sensing PS3 wand have already been sent to third-party studios and the technology is further along than we thought.
"We're a little bit past the research phase," Dille told GameSpot, countering Microsoft's E3 announcement that Project Natal dev kits are being sent to developers this week.
"We're having conversations with the third-party community. The dev kits have started to go out to the third parties as well. They're working on the tech. They couldn't be more excited about it," Dille added.
But for all their posturing, neither company has yet provided a solid date for either technology. That Microsoft has a final product rather than prototype and at least one game suggests Project Natal may arrive first.
First behind Nintendo, of course, which launches the Wii MotionPlus accessory on 12th June. WMP adds a gyroscope to the Wiimote, which takes the controller to a maximum six degrees of motion-sensing freedom.

Those lucky Japanese people have been able to download the original Metal Gear Solid via PSN for ages, and now it's finally coming to the west.
Konami has officially confirmed it will release "the game that started it all" (if you don't count the MSX games before it) on PSN on June 18th, for $9.99.
There's no word on a UK date yet, but we're crossing our fingers that we get it on the same week. the same just happened with FFVII on the PSN.

David Cage, writer and director of Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain, has released a lengthy video of an entire level from the game, along with detailed commentary about how the game works. He demonstrates how to operate the UI, showing how contextual menus let you control actions, dialog, and even your character's thoughts, while also showcasing how the game's investigatory system works and even a few fighting-related quick-time events. 1Up recently spoke with Cage about his time in the games industry, including his previous work on Indigo Prophecy. They also did a Heavy Rain preview of their own, and spoke briefly about post-launch plans. The game is due out next year for the PS3.
We just sat down for an interview with Sony's John Koller, who among many other interesting tidbits and factoids (more on those later) assuaged fears that our giant UMD library would be entirely forsaken. While light on details -- they're still figuring it out, he said -- there will be a "good will" program by which owners of current disc-based titles will be able to obtain digital copies for use on the PSP Go -- "a set number of titles for a set period of time," to be exact. He couldn't confirm all games, or at least all your personal collection, would be transferrable -- that might have to do with the number of digitized games they'll have at launch, which will be at least 300 but not the whole back catalog -- but despite calling it a short-term program he did say, should you receive a new UMD game later down the line, you should still be able to make the digital transfer. As for price, we're still looking to confirm something there, but they wouldn't be putting so much effort into the program if it wasn't at least for a discount, if not free.
If you happen to like your discs, Koller said UMDs aren't going by the wayside so long as the PSP is still around, but he expects digital to start taking an increasing share. Looking to the future, he confirmed all first-party titles and most third-party titles (by the developers' own volition, not a mandate) will be available as digital downloads day and date with the UMD hard copies, and yeah, despite the reduced shipping and manufacturing costs, it'll be for the same price, too.
Well, that didn't take long, now did it? Right on the heels of the UK announcement, Pioneer's trifecta of Profile 2.0 Blu-ray decks -- the BDP-120, BDP-320 and pictured BDP-23FD (known as the BDP-LX52 in European trim) -- got their official US intro to the tune of $299, $399 and $599, respectively. The specs from the January peek at these models remain intact, but covering three price brackets requires some points of differentiation; in this case provided by various video processing magic, onboard persistent storage for the BDP-320 and BDP-23FD, and missing 7.1-channel analog outs on the BDP-120. Oh yeah, and you just know that the BDP-23FD gets that swank Elite badging.
It doesn't come as a surprise that Sony and Microsoft are hard at work at motion controls for their respective consoles: Nintendo is eating their lunch. The Wii's incredible appeal with the average consumer -- due primarily to the accessibility and charm of its Wiimote motion controls -- has also created an annoying divide in the industry (real or perceived) between consumers who use embarrassing gestures to control meaningless mini-games, and those who memorize incredibly complex control schemes to control deeper and more "mature" experiences. There's been a small amount of crossover, of course, but since Sony and Microsoft have lacked most of the gestures option, a majority of it has taken place on the Wii -- the inclusion of an accelerometer in Sony's Sixaxis controller has had little impact on gameplay, and Sony's EyeToy 2 has had even less impact on the average gamer.
Of course, that's all about to change next year, with the emergence of the Microsoft's Project Natal and Sony's PlayStation motion controller. Typical thinking would suggest that Sony and Microsoft will be attempting to capture a slice of the casual gaming market that the Wii has so well dominated, while also expanding on the Wii's capabilities at serving the hardcore gamer -- some capabilities which Nintendo itself is attempting to add to the Wii with the even more imminent MotionPlus add-on. So, does anyone here have what it takes to serve up the next generation of gaming controls to everybody, or do cost considerations and the current state of the console wars dictate an ongoing rift in the market? Let's weigh our options...
We've seen our share of PSP mods in the past -- it sure seems like everyone has an opinion on how to improve the thing. Acidmods.com member Folklord36's innovation has been to place the device in a clamshell scrounged from a Joytech Visor. But the pièce de résistance? The working keyboard, which once belonged to an Xbox 360 Chatpad. This is a hack in progress, so we can expect to see this guy become even more refined in the near future. That said, there's been lots of work done here: speakers moved, LEDs installed in speaker holes and triggers, and of course the case itself. Kudos, our man. Kudos.
Heres just a fun little game I coded in C/C+ a while back while I was bored. Its nothing extravagant but its kinda fun and people keep telling me I should release it. Well here it is for all of you to enjoy. Bush Shooter 2008!

Sony has released Final Fantasy 7 on the UK/European Playstation store with a price tag of £7.99 and weighs in as a 1.29GB (1326MB) download. I've not yet downloaded it fully at this time but for anyone who has, please share your thoughts on how it performs via comments below.

The PSP Go will cost a whooping £229.99 in UK if prices on UK retail sites Game and GameStation are accurate.
Both retailers (here and here) are now taking pre-orders on Sony's new handheld for that price - which is blood pricey when compared to the $249.99 US price tag.
Under the current conversion rate, £230 is almost $380. Which means snagging a PSP Go from the US would cost you £153. Plus shipping if need be. Hmm...
Fortunately, Sony has told us that "UK pricing is still TBC". Let's hope the official price is somewhere nearer the £180 mark.

The PSP version of Soulcalibur IV, known as Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny, continues the long-running tradition of non-canon guest stars with God of War's Kratos. Yes, you'll be chaos-blading Sophitia and Voldo later this year.
We sat in on a God of War III presentation earlier today, one very similar to the hands-off gameplay demo we saw in February. While that demo looked better than the one we'd seen almost four months ago, not much had changed. What had was the inclusion of Kratos in a Soulcalibur game.
Stig Asmussen, director of God of War III, said that the team has been "in constant consultation" with the Project Soul team for five to six months.
"They really nailed down Kratos," Asmussen said, noting that the Kratos players will see in Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny is more in line with the one seen in God of War II, using an older move set and last-generation weapons. Even the character model is God of War II, he said, with the Namco Bandai developers uses assets from the PlayStation 2 version.
While we haven't gotten Sony to answer our question yet about how UMD games will or won't be transferable to PSP Go yet, the company has addressed two other big topics: the unit's price and the timing of game releases.
Sony Computer Entertainment America's head of marketing Peter Dille showed us his fully-functional white PSP Go yesterday (Gran Turismo plays nicely on it, truth be told). And he fielded some of the key questions we've been hearing about the all-digital-download, slide-screen PSP Go.
We asked about the price of the October 1-launching PSP Go, which, at $249, will cost as much as a Wii and more than a PSP or PS2. "It's the same price as when we launched the product, the original PSP," Dille said. "It's targeting an early adopter, a tech enthusiast. We're hearing great things about the product. People are really excited about it. There's not much more to say. " The current PSP, which will continue to be sold once the Go launches, retails for $169.99.
All first and third-party PSP games will be available for digital download once the PSP Go launches, which raises the question of when these games will be purchasable. Would PSP Go owners be able to download the games before they're in stores or have to wait longer than those buying them in shops?
Dille said that PSP games will be made available for download for the PSP Go at a date and time that matches the games' street dates in retail stores. He left the option open to match the games' ship dates instead, if there was no hard-and-fast street date specified. Dille said Sony is also looking into ways to get retailers to support downloads for PSP Go by offering stores the chance to sell vouchers for downloading games, as Sony did in the U.S. with the only-for-download release of Patapon 2.
We expect to have a little more time with the PSP Go today and hope to find out more about Sony's plans for the unit. One thing we still want to know more about it how early adopters will be able to make the transition from their old PSPs to this new one.
Despite expectations that Sony would lower the price of the PS3 at E3, the company announced no price drop at the big show. We asked why.
"From our perspective, this show is all about content," Sony's head of PlayStation marketing in the U.S., Peter Dille, told Kotaku in an interview yesterday. "We believe that our content story is unrivaled. It's really a relentless line-up of great exclusive games that will speak volumes to the value inherent in the PS3. Obviously people come to E3 expecting all sorts of announces. We've got a plan in place for the platform. A price drop at the show wasn't part of it."
The cheapest version of the PS3 on store shelves now is the $399.99 80GB model. The cheapest Xbox 360 is the harddrive-free $199.99 model. The Wii retails for $249.99. Sony's worldwide sales lag behind those of its cheaper competitors.
Prior to E3, spy shots of a rumored PS3 Slim made the rounds. Those images, while possibly fake, showed a box for such a unit that matched the box shown in other leaked shots for the then-unannounced PSP Go. Dille declined to comment on that PS3 Slim rumor, which some observers had tied in to the speculation that the console's price would soon drop.
If Castlevania: Lords of Shadow -- announced today during Konami's E3 press conference -- seems ... familiar, it should. The game was actually announced at last year's E3 -- by Konami -- as Lords of Shadow, minus the Castlevania. But, as far as we can tell by comparing what we saw today versus a year ago, that's the only difference.
Lords of Shadow was a gothic action-adventure game starring a character named Gabriel, who just so happened to wield a whip -- iconic weapon of Castlevania heroes -- that emerged from a crucifix. Castlevania: Lord of Shadows is -- in keeping with the series -- a gothic adventure, starring a crucifix/whip-wielding character named Gabriel (who, like the rest of the game, looks exactly as he did last year). Both years' trailers even feature the same giant, stone golem boss character. Oh, and look amazing. Only now, Kojima Productions is steering MercurySteam along the development path.
2009, where everything old is new again -- and carrying the Castlevania name.
Sony begins to realise the grand vision of PlayStation Home today as photo-sharing is added to the virtual world.
The US PlayStation blog describes this as "the most exciting news since open beta", as photos become the first user-created content within Home.
Photos can be uploaded from PS3 hard-drives and displayed in apartments to friends and visitors. Frames can be bought from the Mall area, plus there are stock photos on offer if you have none.
Sony also launches the Buzz! space for Home today, which manifests as a group quiz game where avatars must co-operate and stand on surfaces coinciding with specific answers.
We're promised the Mall will have Ghostbusters costumes as well as designer outfits and more SFIV clobber, too.
