Burnout Paradise developer Criterion reckons that developers who talk about maxing out the potential of a games console are being a bit silly.
"That's proof that you're not the best," technical director Richard Parr told Eurogamer's Digital Foundry channel. "It means you're out of ideas."
"You always find new ways to do things, the constraints lift. Not just with a new console generation but with every game you do," senior engineer Alex Fry added. "Whether it's a sequel or whether it's a new game, you learn to do things differently... better. The constraints go away because you learn. While it's nice to say you've maxed something out, there's not really any point."
Fry and Parr were speaking to Digital Foundry for today's Burnout Paradise tech retrospective, which explores the origins and processes behind one of the current generation's most respectable game engines.
Fry and Parr explain how the team set about constructing a world that performs equally well on PS3, Xbox 360 and latterly PC despite the difficulties experienced by their colleagues at other studios.

I thought the PSP Go might have better battery life than the current PSP since the PSP Go doesn’t power a laser. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
The European PlayStation Blog points out the PSP Go has three to six hours of juice for games. Movie playback lasts approximately three to five hours. When the PSP-3000 came out John Koller, Director of Hardware Marketing, said the PSP-3000 has four to six hours of life for games and four to five hours for UMD videos.
Sure, that’s only an hour less of Crisis Core, but an hour when you’re talking about three to five hours of total battery life is notable.

It's unsurprising Sony would devise a motion controller, after the gazillions of dollars Nintendo made with its Wii platform. However, as impressive as Sony's E3 demonstration was, many fear the motion controller may signal a paradigm shift for the company. Will hardcore gamers lose out in Sony's (and Microsoft's) newfound reach at the motion-craving casual audience? Tretton doesn't think so. Speaking to CNBC, the president of SCEA promised that the PS3 motion controller (and its games library) will be far more flexible and diverse than what one would find on Nintendo's machine. "Personally, it's very difficult for me to perceive God of War 3 being played with the Wii controller," he said. "It's a different experience that doesn't lend itself to certain types of games. [But] I think our [motion] controller can be used with every game that's on the system now - and every game we're working on."
In fact, Tretton goes so far as to say compatibility with current PS3 games is "absolutely conceivable." Without being able to go hands-on with the device, it's hard to judge. Are there sufficient buttons and sticks to make a 1:1 translation between DualShock and the motion controllers? While it's certainly possible, we can't see many gamers throwing out their DualShock controllers any time soon

Toymaker Mezco Toyz was planning to release LittleBigPlanet licensed action figures this year, in sizes ranging from 2" to 18", along with sundry other Sackboy and Sackgirl themed things. Not anymore, as the product line has been scrapped.
According to customer notifications from retailers like BigBadToyStore, Mezco Toyz has nixed plans for a LittleBigPlanet action figure assault. Retailers have canceled pre-orders and Mezco has removed previous listings for LittleBigPlanet toys and accessories from its official web site.
When we contacted Mezco, reps confirmed that anything and everything planned for LittleBigPlanet from the company had been canceled. When asked why, reps told Kotaku, "We can't comment on that." A quick look at the company's web site shows that almost nothing LBP-related remains.
Mezco had planned for plenty of LittleBigPlanet content, including retailer-exclusive figures, zipper pulls, and even blank Sackboys that consumers could customize themselves. We're not sure why the product line was canceled (yet), but have to wonder if the quality of the initial offerings, which didn't look so spectacular, had something to do with it.

News/release from the Codetactics team:
Courtesy of a 5 day bug fix period for all entrants to the Dashhacks Homebrew Idol 2 comp, we have made some code optimisations and re-released.
We're pleased to say though, that this is the fastest/smoothest the game has ever run. Sure, when the action gets insance, the FPS suffers a little, but it is definitely an improvement over prior releases.
Changelist for Apollonia 0.04a
Code Optimisations
Explosions from tank shells hitting buildings are visible more often
Thinner air strike targeting circle
New known issue is when everything except the hud turns white. I've had this happen once on "Instant Action" but nowhere else.
Apollonia (this game's working title) means "Destroyer", the feminine version of the Greek name Apollo. It seemed an appropriate name for an AH-64 helicopter and it also seemed like an original name until we found out that Apollonia Vitelli-Corleone was a character in the famous Godfather movie.
This game is essentially a tribute to the old Desert/Jungle Strike games for the Sega Mega Drive and PC (see wikipedia). Apollonia was made specifically for the PSP, as it seems a worthy platform to give these games justice. (I could never get Jungle Strike running under emulation on PSP, so we made our own).
At the moment, other platforms are straight ports of the PSP version (and thus use the 480x272 screen size), but more native functions will come in future releases.

The coder Dark_Chiri an interesting issue for our homebrew PSP. This is Trick Update, which lets you emulate a version of system software installed other than the PSP, obviously keeping the Custom Firmware on the console.
More to follow.
Quote:
- Compatible with FAT and PSP SLIM & LITE with Custom Firmware: 5.00 M33-3 / 5.00 M33-4 / 5.00 M33-5 / 5.00M33-6 / 5.02 GEN-A
- Not compatible with Custom Firmware and Custom Firmware Enabler GEN-A for HEN
- To use the program, you must have enabled the option in Recovery "Use Version.txt". When they are disabled, the program is uninstalled in practice.

pedroduarte0 has today released a new version of the port of Doom to the PS2, heres the release news:
New features:
- Savegame handling for different WAD : Now savegames from doom1 and doom2 and other WADs can happy cohexist at the same memory card.
Important: This means that your previous saves needs to be renamed at the PS2DOOM memory card folder. Use uLaunchELF for that (copy the save files to a USB storage device for example, rename those at your computer – see below, delete those same files at the memory card and copy the renamed saves from the USB device back to the PS2DOOM memory card folder). Refer to uLaunchELF documentation for this operations (I won’t offer help at this subject).
Until now, the saves follows the scheme for all the WADs : doomsav0.dsg, doomsav1.dsg, and so on. For now on, the saves reflect the WAD name:
For doom2.wad savegames, you should use the the naming scheme : doom2sav0.dsg, doom2sav1.dsg, etc. Similarly for doom1.wad saves, this will be doom1sav0.dsg, doom1sav1.dsg.
For doom.wad, the filenames should be doomsav0.dsg, etc. You get the picture (sorry to explain this to detail, but I wanted to keep this clear).
Bug fixes:
- Should work with the doom2f.wad (I don’t own it). It should run with previous versions (memory requirements issue since sounds weren’t being downsampled)
- Previous/next weapon selection was buggy (some weapons weren’t selectable) – fixed
- Fixed a crash when a lump is not found (doom.wad at “menu slideshow”) – original sources bug?
- Save/load file handle fixed (no more trying to load/save from empty slots)
I also realised the the source files cosmitoFileIO.c and cosmitoFileIO.h weren’t being included at the distribution archives… Going to fix that.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona and its true to the source material localization is scheduled for release on September 22. Every launch copy comes bundled with a two disc soundtrack, the same pre-order bonus Atlus gave out in Japan.
The PSP version uses the original character names, graphics, and includes the optional Snow Queen quest. Yes, this is almost like the version Japan got in April. Atlus USA added something extra, which we’ll post tomorrow in our Shin Megami Tensei: Persona interview. Until then, enjoy the first English screens.

Namco Bandai put the character creation in Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny. While this is a portable Soulcalibur game, it looks like players will have plenty of options in Broken Destiny to make the sword hunting warrior of their dreams.
The first custom character screenshots show a pink samurai armor, skull helmets, and parrot. A good start, but we need more silly costumes. Accessories like Pac-Man suits and a Katamari hat for Kratos are a must.

Hey, did you know Ubisoft is still releasing DLC for HAWX? We know, we're as surprised as you are! And apparently this latest pack, "Supremacy," is even pricier than usual at $9.99. But don't worry, it's a greatest hits package, with all of the planes released for the game so far lumped into one big chunk.
After the break, we've got a collection of letters, numbers and acronyms that apparently represent some of the planes you'll find if you download "Supremacy." For the rest of us? We've got pictures

Capcom's Japanese site for Lost Planet 2 has been updated with estimated release periods for both the Xbox 360 and newly-announced PlayStation 3 versions. The Xbox 360 version is listed as coming out this winter, but the PlayStation 3 version has an undetermined date. It appears, then, that Lost Planet 2 will be a timed exclusive for the 360, at least in Japan. Unless Capcom's unnanounced PS3 release window turns out the same as the 360 release window.
Unofficial sources (by which we mean gamestop.com) show the same North American release date, February 23, for both versions, but that could be a placeholder. We're currently inquiring with both Capcom and Microsoft to determine the timing of the North American releases.
We're more apt to believe, by the way, that the delay in Japan is due to starting the PS3 version later, and not due to any agreements -- because why on earth would Capcom agree to make something Xbox 360 exclusive in Japan for any period of time?
