Sony yesterday launched its brand new VidZone service for PS3 users in the UK – and whilst the release has been met with little fanfare, those who have downloaded and tried it are already chalking VidZone up as a potential system seller.
For those unfamiliar with VidZone, think Spotify with videos and you’re more or less there. For those of you unfamiliar with Spotify, let’s outline how it all works.
Both services allow users to select any songs from their sizable database – VidZone, for instance, already has 10,000 songs available to view. Once a selection of songs has been made to form a playlist, users then sit back and listen/watch their chosen music.
Both technologies rely on media streaming, so no content is downloaded or stored, alleviating any possible DRM concerns.
It’s all completely free, too, with the makers monetizing everything via banner ads, or in Spotify’s case, two minute adverts at regular intervals.
There have been some sporadic complaints of streaming issues with the VidZone servers, but it’s always hard to be sure where the problem lies – with Sony or with people’s home internet connections. The widespread problems with SingStar’s online elements are leading to many pointing the finger at Sony, however, but at least that means the problem could well be addressed.
And in the interest of fairness, there are plenty of users reporting a faultless service.
With SingStar already proving to be one of the nation’s favourite party games, VidZone is an absolutely ideal choice for any party thrower. So much so, in fact, that Sony really should be throwing more marketing weight behind it.

Digital delivery of games and gaming content is the inevitable future. But how prevalent is it in the present? The NPD Group estimate that, as it stands, digital downloads on a console are doing...OK.
The retail tracking firm reckon that, of all Xbox Live "Gold" subscribers, 18% of them "regularly download from Xbox Live Arcade". When it comes to the PlayStation Network, things aren't quite as big, as only an estimated 10% of account holders "regularly buy digitally from Sony's PlayStation Network".
It's important to note that this survey isn't counting somebody who bought a single copy of Street Fighter II over XBLA and left it at that. It's tracking those who buy, and buy often.

June 12th, 2009, 17:24 Posted By: wraggster
THQ's latest action title, Red Faction: Guerilla, is likely to face stiff competition from Activison's Prototype, with immediate price cuts on the title also an indication of poor sales.
That's according to Cowen's Doug Creutz, who has lowered full year sales estimates for the title from 670,000 units to 500,000.
"Although the 360 SKU of Red Faction: Guerilla remains in the top 10 sellers at both Amazon.com and Gamestop.com, we note that at Amazon the title is already garnering a USD 7.50 discount," wrote Creutz in his latest note to investors.
"The PS3 SKU has fallen off the map at both sites. Activision Blizzard’s recent release Prototype is tracking far better on both the 360 and PS3, and we believe that title could be impacting Red Faction sales."
Red Faction Guerilla entered the UK charts at number three this week, and follows impressive sales of the publishers UFC 2009 Undisputed title in the US and the UK.
However, Creutz doesn't see any more strong releases from the publisher until 2010 and regardless of UFC success has left its rating of THQ shares as 'neutral'.
"With UFC’s successful debut in the rearview mirror, and Red Faction apparently not gaining traction, THQ’s next important release will be Darksiders in January 2010, for which we continue to have cautious expectations. THQ has a very light holiday release slate, with no major releases aside from its annual WWE title," he added.

It took over three years, but mandatory Managed Copy is set to become a reality next year as each studio is required to sign the recently finalized AACS license by December 4th 2009, and any studio that signs early receives up to a 25 percent discount on licensing fees. What isn't mandatory, though, is hardware support, and although the current generation of players definitely won't work, most expect the majority of new BD devices to. The cost (you didn't think it'd be free, did you?) and the number of copies is up to the studio, but at least one copy will be allowed. That copy can be made via a menu on the disc and can take the form of another Blu-ray Disc or a DRM-laced Microsoft file. Up until now, Apple hasn't joined the party so no joy for iPod users -- although this could still happen. Either way, a connection to either the AACS' or studio's authorization server will be required to make it work. As cool as this all sounds, we're still skeptical; and although we'll be the first to try it, somehow we don't think it'll live up to our expectations.

Here are some new shots of SuperCar Challenge, System 3's second racer for the current generation, featuring some Ferraris and a Koenegsig being spanked around in the rain.
The water effects are nice, especially with the working wipers in the interior view, but the cars and environments look a bit on the plain side. We thought the lower-res ones were of a Wii version (no offence, Wii fans). We're told they're not. What do you think?

Industry analysts Michael Pachter has said he "sincerely regrets" saying Sony is "ripping off the consumer" with its $249 price point for PSP Go.
"I sincerely regret the choice of words ... where I said that Sony is "ripping off" the consumer by pricing the PSP Go at $249.99," he said.
"I made a poor choice of words, and I do NOT think that Sony is doing anything nefarious in choosing their pricing strategy," he added, going on to reason: "They have been subsidizing purchases of the PS3 since launch, to the tune of 22 million sold at a loss of $100 or more apiece (on average), so if they are able to make a profit on the PSP Go, more power to them.
"They are pricing at a point that positions the PSP Go competitively with the iPod Touch, and the PSP Go arguably has much more value than the Apple product. Notwithstanding my view that the price point is too high to generate more than a few million units sold, I really think my comment was unfair," he told Industry Gamers.
Pachter made the original offending statements during an interview earlier this week when he said: "[Sony are] ripping off the consumer until they sell a couple million and if consumers don't buy it then the price is going to come down."

Sony is hinting that previously released games might be able to use its motion sensor controller. Jack Tretton said it would be 'absolutely conceivable' that existing games could get a patch when the controller comes out next year — and implied that some of the games shown at E3 this year could ship with motion sensing built into them. The president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America is also not happy about the leaks that preceded the company's E3 press conference (for example, details on the PSP Go). Tretton says it has become impossible to keep a secret in the gaming industry because of third-party publishers — and he's worried about the ramifications that will have as the company develops the PS4."
Joystiq's Law of the Game column has a related article questioning the value of NDAs now that the sharing of information has become so easy.

Developer Sucker Punch started life nearly a decade ago with its first release on the Nintendo 64. Since that time, however, the studio has created titles exclusively for Sony platforms, including the Sly Cooper franchise and recent electro-shocky superhero game, inFamous. Co-founder Brian Fleming recently spoke out on his company's love-in with Sony, explaining that Sucker Punch's platform exclusivity has less to do with money and more to do with simply enjoying what they do.
According to Fleming, while going cross-platform puts a game in front of more potential eyeballs, "it also introduces a whole bunch of problems and compromises and difficulty that doesn't make making games a lot more fun. In fact, I think it subtracts from that."
While the exec notes without reservation that the studio is in this business to make money, he adds that you "have to be careful about being greedy." He adds that the pursuit of dollars has to be weighed against other things, like enjoying what you do for a living, publisher relations and game quality. We'd be hard pressed to argue, especially since our obsession with inFamous has only grown since the game first shocked our hearts.

The second Killzone 2 map pack, the Flash and Thunder map pack, is out today, adding re-designed versions of two fan favourites from Killzone 1.
The pack features Beach Head and Southern Hills maps, which are apparently "two of the best" arenas from the original Killzone - now completely remade for PS3.
In regards to the changes made, senior level designer Stuart Billinghurst points out there's "an immediate visual difference: the original maps took place on Vekta, so we transported them to Helghan's desolate battlegrounds.
"We modified the basic layouts of the maps somewhat, based on accumulated player feedback. The layouts will still be instantly familiar to anyone who played the originals, but the flow of combat has been vastly improved."
Describing the maps, he adds: "MP-11 Beach Head is very much a tug-of-war, with two factions constantly trying to advance the front line in the other direction.
"MP-12 Southern Hills has a classic Capture The Flag-style layout with large open areas and mirrored bases, but the nuclear blast adds an element of unpredictability. In terms of player numbers, both maps are ideally suited for 8-24 players. This isn't a hard limit, though - they can still be played with 32 participants for some frantic fun."

Sony and Disney have announced details about the Hannah Montana PSP bundle first revealed at E3.
Due to arrive in the PAL territories in October this year, the lilac-purple PSP-3000 will come packaged with Hannah Montana: Rock Out The Show, which is the first game based on the Disney license for the Sony portable.
"As girls spend as much time listening to music, taking and editing photos, watching movies, chatting with Skype, surfing the net and playing games with their friends as boys do," says SCEE European marketing manager Isabelle Tomatis. "We thought it was about time that they had their own colour of PSP – and we’ve styled this one up just for them."
The game lets fans of the hugely popular TV show that follows the adventures of star Miley Cyrus design a custom concert in a number of cities. Players can then take to the stage as they perform as Hannah Montana to 11 hit songs, including three new tracks.
The special edition PSP marks an edition to a list of colourful PSP-3000 models, including blue, silver, white and red.

Sony's free on-demand video service for the PlayStation 3, VidZone, is set to go live today in Europe.
The service launches with over 10,000 music videos which can be streamed directly onto the TV, complete with surround sound.
Users need to download the VidZone application from the PlayStation Store, and are then able to watch content, rewind and fast forward videos, and create a library and custom playlists.
