Now that Sony's committed itself to downloadable games with the PSP Go, it's only natural to wonder where that strategy might lead -- and the hot buzz says there's an "app store" of sorts due in August at Gamescom. The new section of the Playstation Store will supposedly impose a 100MB limit on content and set prices in the $2 - $6 range, but otherwise have no restrictions, meaning devs will be free -- and even encouraged -- to code up non-game apps as well. Of course, you'll still be able to snag other PSP titles from the other parts of the store, but if this actually happens it'll be interesting to see if Sony can channel some of the energy from the vibrant PSP homebrew scene into a more legit distribution channel. We'll keep an eye out.

Long ago, without reason or explanation, the mysterious labyrinths came to be, and the world was changed forever. In a constant state of flux, they sprawl across the world like a web, connecting towns and villages, mountains, lakes, and deserts. Many adventurers delved into these labyrinths dreaming of riches, and those fortunate enough to return did so with amazing stories and unimaginable treasures. It was only natural that the children of the world began to look upon these heroes with unconditional admiration, eager to follow in their footsteps. And so, academies for adventurers were born.
Particus Academy may not be the first such school, but we certainly endeavor to be the best! Here at Particus, we strive to equip young men and women with the tools they'll need to become full-fledged adventurers. Bravery, spellcraft, swordplay, 101 ways to avoid dying a horrible death ... These and many other lessons and skills await prospective students! The characters you craft and those you choose to take with you into the dark, dreary depths may be the difference between walking out a hero, clutching prizes and riches beyond imagination, or being carried out a zero, your stiff fist still feebly clutching your sword. Mysterious dungeons await you, first-year. An early demise looms around every dark corner. Don't forget to finish your homework.

Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford has confirmed that shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines will not arrive this year.
Publisher SEGA said as much when announcing Aliens vs. Predator, which will be the first of the Aliens trio (Colonial Marines, Obsidian RPG, AVP) to see the light of day in early 2010.
SEGA announced an Aliens FPS (Colonial Marines) and RPG (by developer Obsidian) shortly after signing the Aliens franchise from 20th Century Fox in December 2006.
The solidity of either project has been questionable. Colonial Marines remains the more tangible, having been promised a "late 2008" release before being pushed into 2009 and now 2010. The Aliens RPG, on the other hand, still has no official name nor details.
Both Gearbox and Obsidian are, and have been, busy working on other major titles. Obsidian is making spy RPG Alpha Protocol for SEGA, which is due on PC, PS3 and 360 this October.
Gearbox has delivered Samba de Amigo on Wii and Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway on PC, PS3 and 360, and is working on meaty openworld shooter Borderlands for PC, PS3 and 360. Furthermore, Pitchford says Gearbox is working on another two unannounced projects. Busy bees.
Aliens vs. Predator, incidentally, is being made by original AVP team Rebellion. Catch-up with the E3 content over on our AVP gamepages.

Sony has said that the time is right for the company to introduce motion control technology to the PlayStation 3 platform.
A firm launch date, solid technology and a clear idea of how it will translate to alternative gaming experiences are the three crucial elements that can help the new control method establish itself on the market, said CEO and president of SCEE, Andrew House.
"We have have a lot of confidence from a Sony standpoint on the right time to introduce new technology and new interfaces, and the goal of the company has always been to do it at the right time, when we can make a difference and be best of breed," offered House, in an exclusive interview published today.
"What we had at the E3 showing was very forward facing technology, a firm date for launch which is important as it gives us a good lead time to assemble the right sorts of content to take advantage of it. And we demonstrated a very tangible sense of how this will translate into gaming experiences. Those are three critical things."
While Nintendo's Wiimote has been on the market for some time, House said that accuracy is the key to the technology, and he's confident Sony's effort will prove that motion control is more than just a gimmick.
"It's stunningly accurate in terms of the way it tracks movement. That sounds like an incremental step in terms of motion technology, but it's a huge one in terms of saying 'now it's arrived' and it's really going to change the way we think about how we play games."
Sony has bravely announced a spring 2010 launch date for the new technology, but other solid details are still under wraps. House would not be drawn on a price for the new control method and only indicated that bundling it with all future PlayStation 3 hardware was a "possibility".
He also shrugged off competition from Nintendo's Wii MotionPlus and Microsoft's Project Natal, adding that motion control will strengthen the PlayStation 3's features.
"I'm not unduly worried and I think the reason for that is that we've done a very good job with the PlayStation 3 as an overall value proposition without any motion control technology," said House.
"We went into this show with a tremendous software line-up, strong confidence in the platform's power and the kind of experiences that are only possible on PlayStation," he said of E3. "This gives us one more extension to that, it helps us build the business in a different direction."

Oklahoma City police caught this woman shoplifting at a local Target with 33 Blu-ray discs shoved down her pants. I just want to know, where was she hiding the player?
And dear god, lady, have you not heard of Bittorrent? The cherry on top is that she was also charged with assault and battery. Pretty hard to put a fight up with that many movies in your panties, but I suppose it would nullify all hits below the belt.

Those frequently revealing ESRB listings have exposed another little gem for PlayStation fans to look forward to, because Final Fantasy Tactics has been rated for Sony's formats.
The PSone classic is a grid-based battle game, like Advance Wars, but with FF characters and some sweet music. The game was slapped with a Teen rating on the US ratings board site, and although it could be a while until it actually hits the PS Store, at least we know it's coming.
For now, you should still be happily working through the epic Final Fantasy VII, which graced the PS Store earlier this month.

An apps store for the PSP go is to be unveiled at this year's gamescom in Cologne, with reports suggesting that Sony in encouraging developers to create 'non-retail' games for the new, UMD-less device.
Destructoid reports that file sizes for the apps will be limited to 100 MB, and that Sony is working hard to make it less painful to develop for the handheld.
'We are making a concerted push towards expanding the content available on the Store,' Sony's Al de Leon told the site, 'particularly with the demand for digital content that will spike when the PSPgo launches this fall.'
Sony recently cut the cost of development kits for the PSP, a move that will likely lead to a new flood of titles to coincide with the launch of the PSP go this October.

A prison has banned inmates from using PlayStation 3 games consoles because they fear they could be used in an escape attempt. Inmates at Rye Hill prison, near Rugby, Warwickshire, were found to be using the consoles' built-in wireless connections to chat to friends outside prison. Wardens have confiscated the consoles over fears they pose a "significant threat" to prison security. A spokesman for the Prison Service said: "PlayStation 3 consoles are barred on the grounds that they have the capability to send and receive radio signals as an integral part of the equipment."
