The living Beatles, and the wives of the dead ones, are full "creative partners" in the development of the new Rock Band game, according to Harmonix.
Speaking to Crispy Gamer lead designer Chris Foster said, "The shareholders, as we call them - Paul and Ringo, Olivia and Yoko - were really creative partners throughout the project.
"They were involved in picking and approving the song list, the venues we went into. With the dreamscapes, they saw storyboards of all of the material, and gave feedback on whether or not they felt like those interpretations supported the songs in the way they wanted."
The fab two and the other two also cast their eyes over the character designs and animations. "With Rock Band, you've got these avatars that are, you know, anyone, so it's pretty easy for you to believe in them. But when you know who the Beatles are, and you know the joy in their faces when they play, you have to capture that on-screen; you have to be true to that, and they were really good about keeping the standard high."
That applied to the standard of playing, too: "I think Sir Paul McCartney heckled our project lead's bass-playing when he saw one of the game demos," said Foster.
"So yeah," yeah, yeah, yeah, "They were involved. I'm not going to put words in their mouth, but seeing all four of them at the Microsoft press event is about as validating as everything. They don't get together for almost anything... It has to be something important, something they believe in."
The Beatles: Rock Band is due for a release on PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii on 9th September. You can find out all the business via the gamepage.

[Jay] hacked a Blu-Ray laser diode into a keychain enclosure. He found a heavy brass keychain light from Lowe’s and stuffed the diode and a larger battery inside. The existing batteries weren’t powerful enough, so he drilled out the endcap to fit a 200mAh 3.6v lithium battery inside. He also modded the power button to only momentarily turn on the diode. With the larger battery, the laser can run for about an hour between charges. In addition to a Blu-Ray lasers, he also has versions with a 200mW red diode.

We've been hearing rumors about a non-game app store for the PSP since the launch of the PSP Go, and it sounds like the wheels are turning -- in an interview with CNET, Sony's Al De Leon said that while PSP content "will mostly be games, there's an opportunity to look at non-gaming applications." Sure, that's not exactly a hard confirmation, but it's certainly suggestive -- maybe we'll see something at Gamescom in August after all.

New details on sessions for this year's Develop conference have been released, with delegates set to find out more about the PlayStation 3's new motion controller, first unveiled at E3 this year.
The keynote talk from SCEE's Kish Hirani and Colin Hughes, entitled "PlayStation: Cutting Edge Technologies," will look at the current state of the PlayStation platforms, as well as providing new information on the controller and forthcoming PS3 and PlayStation Portable titles.
Also at the event will be a session hosted by Intel, exploring the new Larrabee architecture and what new opportunities the hardware firm hopes it will bring, while Krome's CEO Robert Walsh will give a talk on seven key practices for shipping a title on time and on budget.
And UK design legends David Braben and Dave Jones will go head-to-head in looking back at the inspirations for Elite and Grand Theft Auto, and talk about some of the creative decisions involved in the iconic titles.
This year's Develop Conference is taking place in Brighton from July 14-16, and GamesIndustry.biz will have more news and features on the event in the next few weeks.

Activision is banking on the new DJ Hero game and localised product to help the company expand the business across the European markets.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, CEO and president Mike Griffith said the company wants to make up for focusing the early Guitar Hero franchise on North America, and he's making sure that stock of the game along with the new turntable peripheral will be in plentiful supply for Europe.
"In particular if you look at the Guitar Hero franchise we are significantly under-developed relative to the share of the rest of our company in Europe," said Griffith. "Some of that was driven by early decisions to allocate scarce hardware to North America instead of Europe, which we've now made up for."
"Some of it is due to not enough localised content to really satisfy consumers particularly in parts of Europe like Germany, France and the UK. We've done more of that and if you look at the March quarter consumer sales of Guitar Hero in Europe almost doubled.
"We're starting to hit a inflection point and things like Guitar Hero: Metallica, which will coincide with the band's multi-city tour this summer, DJ Hero that addresses that techno, hiphop and club genre, should help us accelerate that," he said.
Griffith is confident Activision now has a solid hardware manufacturing business, and has the logistics in place to ship DJ Hero to meet demand.
"It started slow and organically and it felt more like an evolution," offered Griffith. "In the early days we had a lot of difficulty manufacturing enough guitars and a lot of difficulty with our logistics systems.
"In the early days of Guitar Hero we added capability and built a lot more support with people on the ground in Asia and logistics in Europe and North America and now we're pretty good of it."
Despite a portfolio that features three titles which rely on peripherals – Guitar Hero, DJ Hero and Tony Hawk: Ride – Griffith stated that the company shouldn't be considered a hardware manufacturing company, and that innovative software remains its focus.
"We're certainly making a lot more hardware than we were in the past but it's a really a reflection of this cycle and the ability to have physical interface and the consumer's acceptance of that interface.
"Our objective is always really about the game and how to make that great and innovative. We're not trying to get into the peripheral business, we're trying to make innovative gaming experiences for the consumer," he added.

SCEE President Andrew House says firm is confident that European gamers aren’t price sensitive
SCEE president Andrew House has told MCV that Sony will only cut the price of the PlayStation 3 when the time is right.
In an exclusive interview, he said that the company is focused on returning its PlayStation business to profitability, and House is confident that European gamers look at the full package when considering what console to buy, and not just the price.
“Not to harp on about it, but the PlayStation 3 has a ten-year life cycle and there are issues of cost and profitability,” said House.
“We will make that move on price when all those factors are aligned.
“Would people buy more when they are cheaper? Of course. But on the other hand there is an inherent marketing challenge. In Europe I think people do see the value of the machine, the Blu-Ray and network services and take that all into consideration instead of just focusing on price.
“But we will look at price and will address it when the time is right.”

Developer Curve Studios is preparing its PlayStation Network title Explodemon! for release on Sony's recently announced PSPgo.
Responding to Sony's recent request for new IP, the development house, which is planning to release the PSN version of the platforming game in the fourth quarter of this year, has opted to support the download-only model on which the PSPgo is based.
“As one of Europe’s leading PSP developers we’re very excited about the announcement of PSPgo,” said Curve's MD, Jason Perkins. “With its focus on digital distribution, PSPgo represents a great opportunity for us to capitalise on our experience on the platform and bring our own IP to portable gamers.”
Curve studios has already created four titles for the PSP which have been made available through the PSN service, building up its experience working with the Sony platforms.
“I’m thrilled to be bringing Explodemon! to the PSP,” added Perkins, “We think its combination of classic platforming action and high degree of replayability make it the perfect handheld title. We’re eager to see how gamers receive it when we release it next year. In addition to Explodemon!, we have a number of other remarkable titles in production that we plan to bring to the handheld in 2010.”
No release date for the PSPgo version has been confirmed. Explodemon is also due to see release on the PC and Wii.

It seems that version 2.80 has just come out and it is not a mandatory update. This means folks can still go online and use the Playstation Network and related features without needing to upgrade first.
As for the changelog, it's nothing spectacular, just one sentence:
- The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 software has been improved.
The file size is 142.70MB and can be downloaded via the PS3 or a computer via a memory stick (USB or Pro/Duo) from Sony's website.

News via streetskaterfu
Firmware 2.8 just became available for retail users to download and update their PlayStation 3 system. Now Dashhacker (the developer of Open Remote Play) gave a statement that the new firmware blocks his application. The video stream will only work like for 30-60 seconds as he mentions:
As some of you may already know, Sony has blocked Open Remote Play as of PS3 firmware v2.80, June 24th. At this time, ORP will no longer work for longer than about 30 - 60 seconds. I've only looked at the problem for a few minutes but it seems that they've "poisoned" the video stream by some means rather than changing the keys or cryptography. I'll study what they've done and patch FFmpeg within the next... week? month? Not too sure how long it'll be before I can undo Sony's greedy brain damage. I'll post any progress here as I muddle through it.
Why patch a useful application which does not even affect PS3's security in general? We don't know.

From Software isn’t the only company profiting off portable PlayStation 2 games. Koei and Gust are joining the party too. Koei will release Shin Sangoku Musou 5 Special, the PlayStation 2 version of Dynasty Warriors 6, for PSP on September 3.
The PSP version comes includes ad-hoc cooperative play, new costumes, and Meng Ho from Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires which was just released today.
Mana Khemia 2 Portable is also said to be in development (thanks for the tip Ben!!). Multiple Japanese blogs support the news attributing it to a revised release calendar. Apparently, Mana Khemia 2 Portable will come out in Japan on October 1st. We’re still searching for this mysterious list so we’ll mark this in the rumor pile for now. If you have it please send a tip via e-mail!
Personally, I’m buying the news. Gust ported Mana Khemia to PSP so why wouldn’t they port Mana Khemia 2?

Capcom is celebrating the launch of Mega Man 9 on PlayStation Network… yes really, PlayStation Network. In Japan Mega Man 9 was only released on WiiWare until today.
Capcom is making it up to PlayStation 3 owners with a little contest. People who purchase the Mega Man 9 over PSN will be eligible to win a Mega Man t-shirt or a downloadable version of Rockman: Complete Works, a remake of Mega Man 1, on the PlayStation Store. The contest starts today and runs until July 8.
Currently, the contest is the only way to get Rockman: Complete Works since it’s not available on the PlayStation Store. However, since Capcom created a downloadable version this game will probably go on sale in the game archives collection in the future. Capcom released Perfect Works editions of Mega Man I-VI in Japan. The rest of the games could (probably will?) come to PlayStation Network in the future.
