PlayStation Network revenues were up an impressive 20 per cent for the month of August, according to a recent study.
VG247 report that figures compiled by Forecasting & Analyzing Digital Entertainment (FADE) indicate the service netted $5.7 million in August.
Scott Pilgrim vs The World led the way with 117,000 downloads, followed by Castle Crashers with 27,000 and Shank with 23,000. ZEN Pinball and Joe Danger completed the top five.
Scott Pilgrim's timed exclusivity deal worked wonders for Sony. Ubisoft's movie tie-in only managed 38,000 downloads when it later launched on Xbox 360.
Sony's figures are a long way off matching stats for Xbox Live Arcade however. Earlier this week FADE claimed that Microsoft's service brought in $17.5 million over the same period.

The PlayStation 3 can still catch the Xbox 360 in terms of sales, EA has predicted.
The publisher's European senior vice president Uwe Intat told MCV, "We could certainly see Sony come back – in the UK it's still a head-to-head competition between PlayStation and Xbox, but on the continent Sony is traditionally stronger than Microsoft.
"But we're very happy to watch the competition, because as long as they're competing to get more consumers in, there are more people we can sell games to."
While PlayStation 3 had a slow start at retail, it's been picking up the pace of late. In Japan, it overtook the Wii's annual sales-to-date tally for the first time since launch.
As of 30th June this year, the PlayStation 3 had shifted 38.1 million units worldwide, whereas Microsoft had moved 41.7 million Xbox 360s.
Strangely, Intat didn't mention the Wii. In July, Nintendo announced that 73.97 million units had been sold across the globe.

The newest member of the PS3 jailbreaking tool crowd is the iPod family. More specifically, iPods running the open source media firmware Rockbox. Even better news, theoretically it should be possible to use this same method on any MP3 player running the Rockbox software. Right now the exploit package only works on select generations of the iPod Nano and iPod Classic line, but if the trend set by the PSX-scene forums continues, it would be worth checking back in the near future if your device is not already supported. Thanks to [shuffle2] for providing the hack, and [DanAdamKOF] for the heads up.

We're not sure why anyone would buy a knock-off DualShock 3 or SIXAXIS gamepad, considering the trouble Sony's taken to make sure they don't work, but the PlayStation 3 manufacturer has another reason you might want to steer clear of counterfeit pads -- they could be tiny Li-ion bombs poised to explode. Talk about force feedback! Yes, the company that brought us exploding laptop batteries says that third-party products "which are practically identical in appearance to genuine PlayStation®3 wireless controllers" may burst into flame, and as you might expect, Sony suggests that you run out to your nearest retailer and purchase the real deal instead.

I haven't tried it myself yet, but these guys have:

You can use the psfreedom-enable and psfreedom-disable sh files from the nokia package: http://www.ps3-hacks.com/file/85
It pretty much just inserts the psfreedom.ko (insmod psfreedom.ko) I think. I didn't really look into, but it works.
Good luck.

Woo! It seems to work!
Those sh files wouldn't work for me, so I tried just and it worked.
[s]Now I'm just trying to figure out/remember where to put the pkg files...[/s]
I remembered it's the root of a separate usb storage device.
Many Thanks!

Note: The downloads and links in this post are all perfectly legal. I think we all know what the board rules are... keep it clean, keep it homebrew.

Blu-Ray.com called attention to an SCEI press release about the features of the new Blu-Ray 3D function for the PS3 (info also available in English here). It specifically noted that when playing a movie in 3D, audio will play in DTS or Dolby Digital when your system is set to output DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD, respectively.
Blu-Ray.com's Joshua Wingfield tested the 3D playback: "I can confirm that with the PS3 3.50 firmware update it only puts the audio out as DTS standard (lossy) in the bitstream mode. Also the menus on Coraline are flattened to 2D. Subtitles still show up in 3D mode, and so do menus. The image just flattens." Note that he didn't seem too put off by the limitation, saying, "So for now 3D on the PS3...full 1080p to each eye, but no HD audio and no 3D on menu screens or pop up menus. Can't say I'm disappointed."
The PS3's 3D capabilities remain impressive, though not quite perfect. For 3D games, you have to lose some graphical complexity (in order to render two images simultaneously) and for 3D movies, you may have to sacrifice sound quality. And you sacrifice some of your time learning about audio codecs.

The most recent PlayStation 3 firmware update has disabled certain third-party pads, USB devices and PS2 to PS3 controller converters, users have claimed.
Scores of people have posted on Sony's official message boards that their third party add-ons are no longer working.
When the Blu-ray 3D-friendly firmware update went live earlier this week, Sony explained, "SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates.
"SCE and its affiliated companies disclaim all liability for any loss or damage suffered by you or any third party through the use of counterfeit or unlicensed products."
However, there have been a number of complaints that some above-board MadCatz pads and Guitar Hero accessories no longer work either.
We've asked Sony for an explanation and will update when it gets back to us.

Warning: Counterfeit and Unlicensed PlayStation®3 Wireless Controller (Recommendation: use only genuine PlayStation®3 Wireless Controller)
Counterfeit PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers, which are practically identical in appearance to genuine PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers, have been discovered in the market. SCEA advises consumers to be cautious when buying PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers from uncertain sources as the quality, reliability and safety of counterfeit products is uncertain, and in some cases, may be dangerous. It is possible that some counterfeit product may ignite or explode, resulting in injury or damage to the user, your PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, or other property. Moreover, SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates.
SCE and its affiliated companies disclaim all liability for any loss or damage suffered by you or any third party through the use of counterfeit or unlicensed products.
We appreciate your understanding and continued support.
In addition to counterfeit controllers, if you have upgraded to the new 3.50 firmware to get the 3D Blu-Ray playback, don't be surprised if your unofficial USB devices no longer work. Sony failed to mention that they also prevented majority of 3rd party peripherals to not work unless its licensed Sony products.
Members from the Official PlayStation forum have started a list of what USB devices do not work. I've heard Bannco's FRAGnStein was also one of them that did not work but Bannco released a new firmware update for the controller to make it work again. But not all 3rd party devices are upgradeable with a simple flash of a firmware.
What's next Sony? You're going to remove online play so people can't cheat or trash talk? I hope this wasnt intentional as 3rd party manufacturers will be very upset about this.
*UPDATE*
We've been informed by XCM that their PS3 products such as their XCM XFPS Fire Light Gun, Cross Battle Adapter 2.0, RateUp Adapter and XFPS Force 4.0, all work on 3.50 firmware.

This wasn't mentioned among the other 3D-related PS3 announcements Sony made during its Tokyo Game Show press conference last week, but it looks like the company has another little bonus in store for those that just can't get enough 3D. It's just announced a new PlayMemories application that will be available as a free download in "late September," and will let you view both 2D and 3D photos captured with a 3D-compatible camera (including Sony's NEX-5/NEX-3, WX5 and TX9). No peek at the app itself just yet, unfortunately, but we're guessing it'll be available any day now -- it is technically late September, after all.

Microsoft has sided with Apple in a rare case of solidarity between the two companies, and declares that Blu-ray will be "passed by" as a high-definition format. In many ways, it's hard to disagree. US markets have seen the demand for legal digital downloads of PC games exceed sales of the physical object for the first time, and Apple famously refuses to put a Blu-ray drive in its Macs, as Jobs prefers to send people towards iTunes to download their entertainment. That said, there's an argument for physical media, too. A recent survey suggested that the majority of gamers prefer physical discs, and digital downloads have the secondary effect of entirely cutting out the popular market for second-hand films and games — a plus for publishers, but a big negative for the consumer.

The US International Trade Commission will investigate a patent infringement case lodged against Sony by Taiwanese LCD manufacturer Chimei Innolux Corp.
The alleged infringement, which focuses on memory caching technologies used in Sony's PlayStation 3 console, and comes as part of series of filings by Chimei, including cases based on technology used in Bravia TVs and VAIO notebooks.
The case has lead to Chimei attempting to ban imports of the goods into the US, from manufacturing plants in Japan, Mexico and China, Gamasutra reports.
The ITC will also be hearing a separate allegation in January, filed by Sony, which accuses Chimei of copying patented Sony technology in its televised menu displays.
Chimei has suffered a number of legal defeats in recent times, including the jailing of three its executives in a price-fixing scandal and further copyright-infringement cases.

For the last few weeks we’ve been helping drk||Raziel test and debug his nulldc emulator. We’re now pleased to exclusively bring you a video of it in action! Progress has been steady since his last update, showcasing the BIOS running. Games are now running and all of the graphical glitches are now gone from the BIOS! This is still a very early build of this emulator, and it will be a few more weeks before this really gets to playable form. It is currently running very slowly, (7.5 frames per second), but drk||Raziel has not even touched speed optimization yet. Also, many games have graphical glitches, sound is not ported yet, and most games don’t boot at all (mainly because they gripe about not having sound). However, progress is moving extremely quick on this project and it is shaping up very nicely! Below is a video of the emulator running Power Stone and Crazy Taxi.
