September 12th, 2010, 17:20 Posted By: wraggster
DCEmu Coder Uberjack is back with a new release of his Colecovision Emulator for the PSP, heres the release details:
Proving that I’m not actually dead, but restin’, is today’s release of ColEm PSP 2.6.1. It’s a pretty cool release, as it fixes games like Frogger and Heist, which are now playable. Straight from Marat’s documentation:
» State save file format (.STA) changed!
» Now clearing all RAM to zeros (Heist works)
» Now padding smaller ROMs with 0xFFs in LoadROM()
» Fixed Reset9918() to reset VDP completely (Boulder Dash and Frogger)
» Implemented SCREEN2 table address masking, thanks to Daniel Bienvenu
Just to re-emphasize, save state format has changed, so your old save states will not be compatible with the new version. Keep both versions if you don’t want to throw away all your hard work.
Download
For those who are still following my activities, I’m not actually restin’ – I got a new job in Los Angeles, and my new duties coupled with LA commute make it difficult for me to pursue my usual hacking (as in programming, not the evil variety) activities.
My new job, of course, hasn’t stopped me from emulation in general – I recently got a Nintendo Wii, and lost no time in unlocking its considerably more entertaining features. State of emulation (and homebrew in general) on the Wii seems to parallel that of the PSP, although it does seem to be further ahead (market penetration and all).
While I already have the devkit installed, and am considering adding features to some existing Wii emulators, I doubt I’ll ever do anything of the scale of my PSP projects again – I simply don’t have the time.

Newly released today
When you're on the ice, anything can happen — and frequently does. A puck-smashing, opponent-pummeling, ice-dominating prodigy, you are fast on your way to hockey greatness, and the success of just one match lies between you and your NHL dream.
You glide to the center red line and look into your opponent's shielded face as you crouch down in preparation. The puck falls, as if in slow motion, as you both spring forward, sticks thrashing, ice flying and limbs thrusting. Just as you start to break away, you take a bone-crushing hit and hear the splintering of wood as your stick snaps apart.
If you can't use your sharp reflexes and agile intuition to wrest away the puck, your dream could slip away forever. Are you a true NHL champion? Skate into realistic hockey action, the likes of which you've only seen at the rink itself, as you take on the future of hockey gaming in NHL 11.

Remember when motion-controlled games were simply for old people and children? (We kid!) However, Nintendo's marketing has rarely reached this level of aggression. Sony has launched a new website -- www.yaybuttons.com -- that plays hardball against Microsoft's button-free Kinect experience. By clicking any of the buttons on the virtual PlayStation Move controller, you'll be able to read through a rant from fictional PlayStation VP Kevin Butler:
"It turns out that buttons are pretty important. Not like "save the whales" important. More like 'not play games that suck' important. Cuz they help you ... control stuff. Controller. Control. Kinda makes sense. Some people don't think you need buttons. WHAT?! Craziness. Could you imagine gaming without buttons? Where would the control come from?"
While there's some reason for concern, this kind of marketing can be interpreted not as playful, but a return to the "arrogant" attitude Sony has been notorious for. Considering Microsoft's Kudo Tsunoda confirmed future games could use the button-y Xbox 360 controller in conjunction with Kinect, this might be an argument Sony won't want to kick up.

Should the classy white, or the patriotic red and blue PlayStation controllers not take your fancy, Sony's rolling out another hue just for you, discerning consumer: pink! The Japanese maker of everything with an electronic pulse has a bit of a tradition with this color and it's not like the great PS3 hasn't been licked by a few strokes of red lite before. Pricing is your typical $54.99 for this wireless console commander and GameStop should have them in within a couple of weeks.

September 11th, 2010, 16:36 Posted By: wraggster
Sony America's Peter Dille has frankly conceded that his company will never "outspend" rival Microsoft.
His comments referred to the upcoming battle between new motion controllers Move and Kinect.
"I don't think we'll ever outspend Microsoft," Dille told the Seattle Times (via CVG). And Dille doesn't believe Sony has to.
"Our perspective has become much more bullish as we get closer to [Move] launch," he said. "We've had a chance to get people playing our system ... The feedback we've gotten has been unanimous and tremendous. It's, 'I see what you mean about this precision thing.' Our pre-orders continually are ramping up with consumers, retailers want to get more product."
Dille explained that retailers should have plenty of stock, and that selling out would be "a high-class problem to have". Of the launch line-up, Dille predicted that Sports Champions will be the best seller because, like Nintendo's Wii Play, it comes bundled with the motion controller (in the US, not Europe - all bundle details can be found on the European PlayStation blog).
The Seattle Times questioned Dille about various other topics, including that of a PlayStation phone. "No new mobile launches this year," answered Dille. Other areas touched on were acquiring more in-house studios - "You can't buy a new studio every week" - and lowering the price of PS3. To the latter, Dille responded: "We're pretty comfortable with $299. Since we announced that last year, we've been challenged to keep the PlayStation [3] in stock."
Sony's PlayStation Move controller launches a week from now on Friday, 17th September.

drk||Raziel has posted some more news concerning his work on Dreamcast/PS2 Emulators for PS3.
As you might have already read a basic cross compile of the core of nulldce is working. This was tested on an official debug unit, over the internet. I’m currently working on getting it to work with the open ps3 toolchain (which, is a lot of work as there’s no open sdk available yet). So the next few weeks will be mostly dedicated on getting the compiler/libs up to par, so that we can have some usable output !
For those interested, to get the cross compile working I just had to define a new compile target, and reused the existing linux/wii codepaths.
I must also thank the donors — the target to get a ps3 is already half-way reached ! Will later on make a thank you list (if you want to keep your donation anonymous have no fear, i will email before publicizing any details)

News via http://www.pagetable.com/?p=376
In the talk “Why Silicon Security is still that hard” by Felix Domke at the 24th Chaos Communication Congress in 2007 (in which he described how he hacked the Xbox 360, and bushing had a cameo at the end explaining how they hacked the Wii), I had a little part, in which I argued that “Linux Is Inevitable”: If you lock down a system, it will eventually get hacked. In the light of the recent events happening with PlayStation 3 hacking, let’s revisit them.
The table shows the relationship between the quality of a device’s security system and the time it took to hack it, as well as the original motivation for hacking and the side effects (collateral damage) it caused.
Correlation security/time to hack
There is a pretty clear correlation betwen the quality of the security system and the time required for hacking it – with the notable exception being the GameCube, which had rather weak security, but since its release coincided with the much more powerful Xbox, much of the hacker community neglected the GameCube until the Xbox was done. What can also be seen is that recently, devices tend to get hacked more quickly; probably simply because there are more and more people interested in hacking.
Correlation Linux/time to hack
The other exception is the PlayStation 3, which was not hacked until about three and a half years after its introduction. I argued that this was because there was only very little motivation to hack it: Sony shipped the devices with the “Other OS” option and even sponsored a port of Linux to it, allowing any user to install Linux if they wanted. Although Linux was running on top of a hypervisor and did not have access to all of the features of the device, it seems to have been enough to take the enough motivation to hack it out of the hacker community.
Linux/homebrew is the primary motivation
This is supported by the by the fact that the motivation for hacking every system in the table was either homebrew (i.e. running unautorized hobbyist applications) or Linux. Hackers seem to love to convert their devices into Linux computers to run a big library of existing software, or to hack the device to make it possible to run versions of existing emulators and games on the native OS.
Piracy is a side effect
None of the hacks in the table was done with the motivation to allow running copied games – but whenever the point of the security system was to prevent piracy, hacking it inevitably enabled piracy as a side effect. Some security systems protected other things like pay TV keys and SIM-locks; these also fell as side effects.
2010 update
In September 2009, Sony started shipping the “slim” model of the PlayStation 3, with the “Other OS” feature removed. With firmware 3.21 in April 2010, the feature was also removed from existing original models that users chose to upgrade – which was required for using any of the online features. The missing “Other OS” feature on the slim model motivated George Hotz (geohot) to hack into hypervisor mode (Jan 2010), but this approach did not lead to a working hack of the security system. In August 2010, the Australian company OzMods announced the commercial “PSJailbreak” USB dongle that hacks into non-hypervisor mode, allowing piracy and homebrew (“Backup Manager” says “backups and homebrew”).
Although this is the first time that a commercial company is first to hack a system, and the first time that piracy seems to have been a key motivation, removal of “Other OS” might have been another motivation, and geohot’s previous attempts might have helped as an entry point for this hack.
Usually, an open hacker community develops a hack, and commercial companies convert them into modchips. This time, a company developed a hack and a modchip, and the community reverse engineered it and ported the exploit code onto several other devices, allowing people to hack the PlayStation 3 without a dedicated device. And I’m sure Linux will be adapted soon to run in the new environment.
Conclusion
What do we learn from this? Linux is inevitable. Or maybe it should be “Homebrew is inevitable”. In the history of mankind, there has yet to be a popular system that is locked down to only allow certain software to run, but does not get hacked to run arbitrary code. I still dare to say that if Sony had not removed “Other OS”, the PlayStation 3 would have been the first system to not get hacked. At all.
