The PS4 will likely be hard to find on the High Street when it eventually arrives (hopefully) later this year.
"Although we have been given no official numbers by Sony we do believe that demand will far outpace the supply of this product during the launch window," GameStop president Tony Bartel told investors, as reported by Cnet.
He added that nearly 900,000 consumers have signed up to the chain’s ‘First to Know’ PS4 email list – a number he believes reflects the likely strength of pre-orders for the machine.
GameStop’s executive vice president of strategy business and brand development Michael Hogan recently claimed that the PS4 would be launching worldwide this year in every territory – and yes, that means Europe too.
Sony, however, has been less willing to commit to any specific timeframe, claiming in February that it was “too early to say” whether enough machines could be manufactured to meet the demand of a global launch.

GDC 2013: Crystal Dynamics reveals gulf between "actuals and expectations"
Square Enix
square-enix.com
Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider had the biggest week one sales in the history of the franchise, and the most successful launch of 2013 so far.
In a GDC session attended by Jostiq, Crystal Dynamics head Darrell Gallagher outlined Tomb Raider's success, even though Square Enix revealed the game failed to meet expectations just days earlier.
"It's been the biggest week one sales in franchise history, and we're only a few weeks into that launch right now, and it's been the biggest opening so far in 2013," said Gallagher. "So, we're happy with the outcome. It's certainly in a place where we feel like we're on the road to achieving everything we wanted to.
"Certainly we're proud of what we achieved, and I think for the most part, the whole organisation is happy with what we did... Actuals and expectations, I guess, are two slightly different things. What I'm telling you is the actuals, and they're communicating expectations."
In a document circulated among its investors, Square Enix showed that the 3.4 million units Tomb Raider sold last month was lower than the company required. The figures were released to prepare investors for the company's next financial report, which will include a fiscal year loss of around $138 million, much of it attached to significant restructuring costs.
The company's performance over the last financial year, in which Sleeping Dogs, Hitman and Tomb Raider all failed to meet their internal targets, prompted the resignation of long-time CEO and president Yoichi Wada.

Yannis Mallat "doesn't see the day" when annual sequels become a problem for hit franchise
Ubisoft
ubisoft.com
Ubisoft Montreal boss Yannis Mallat does not subscribe to the notion that annualised sequels for franchises like Assassin's Creed create player fatigue.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Mallat claimed that the only way to judge the validity of such a strategy is through player satisfaction, and in that respect Assassin's Creed seems to be heading in exactly the right direction.
"Right now there are more and more coming into the franchise, so I don't see that day," he said. "It's our breakthrough. When you have quality content, the frequency of coming out with the game is not an issue at all.
"On the contrary, people expect more and more of that content. So it's natural to be able to provide that content. The gamers are happy and it's our job to make them happy."
Assassin's Creed 3 has sold 12 million units to date, making it both the most successful game in the series and the biggest launch in Ubisoft's history. Importantly, it was also the series' fifth full console release, and the fourth in four years.
However, Mallat believes that the rate of production needn't have a negative impact on quality. Ubisoft has seven studios all over the world working on the franchise, giving the core teams on each instalment time to develop their ideas, and ensuring that the same staff don't work on consecutive projects.
"That's why every Assassin's Creed has one dedicated core team working more than one year on their projects," he said. "We call that a roadmap. It takes into account the creative content - the settings, the where and what - the technology and the team.
"What I described with the roadmap is we have several teams. So they are resting. The team that has delivered Assassin's Creed 3, they're not working on Black Flag. They're resting. They are refreshing their minds and then working on something else that is not announced."

At the Revision 2013 demoparty held last weekend, visitors and guests wanting to check out the latest advances in programming old video game consoles got a real treat. [Abyss] took a Playstation 2, connected the composite video out port to a TV and an oscilloscope, and created the first dual display PS2.
From the official video of the demo, the two video signals are generated from a single video out on the PS2. Generating the composite video out is understandably fairly easy, but the second display – an oscilloscope – is driven during the Vblank period in the composite signal. There’s no audio trickery here; video signals are used for video, and audio signals are used for audio.
[Abyss] took first place in the wild demo competition at Revision 2013. Understandably, too, because this is one of the best demos we’ve ever seen. You can check out the official video from [Abyss] after the break, and the wild competition video after the break.

The PlayStation 4 will be introduced globally in 2013, retailer GameStop’s executive vice president of strategy business and brand development Michael Hogan has said.
The statement calms fears that the console will arrive in Europe in 2014.
“We know that Sony will introduce the PlayStation 4 globally in 2013, but we are still waiting to see what Microsoft’s final plans are,” Hogan said, speaking at a conference call with financial analysts.
Sony has a history of staggered launches for its PlayStation consoles. Historically, consoles arrived in Japan and North America first, with the European launch delayed by a few months.

Sony appears to be planning bundled retail releases for various PSN games, according to an ESRB listing.
The listing (via Gamespot) unveils a “Best of Playstation Network Vol. 1” compilation on Blu-ray for Playstation 3; with titles including Sound Shapes, Tokyo Jungle, When Vikings Attack, and Fat Princess.
Two of the four digital titles are available on Vita with cross-buy, but it’s not mentioned whether the feature will be included as part of the retail release.
No official confirmation from Sony as of yet, let alone a release date or pricing info. However, the fact that the compilation is labeled volume one certainly suggests that other PSN retail bundles could be in the works as well.

The PC release of standalone DayZ may still be some way off, but that hasn’t stopped creator Dean Hall hinting at a console release.
The DayZ Arma II mod enjoyed huge success last year, so much so that Arma devs Bohemia recruited the mod’s maker to produce an official standalone release. But having missed its 2012 release window, the SKU is still many months away.
However, such is the hunger for the game that it could even pave the way for an arrival on consoles, with PS4 looking a likely destination.
"Certainly I think if we don't, for want of a better word '**** up', the PC release then I would say a console port is almost certain," Hall told The Escapist.
"I know a lot of people get really hot and bothered about it. Like, I'm not a console gamer, I'm a PC gamer, but I don't think it necessarily has to hurt things.
"It appears to be the kind of game that Sony are interested in, I think we just have to wait and see. We've talked and met with Sony, and they're very – you know, they're obviously interested."
Hall added that as it stands DayZ is not in development on console.
Could this point to a possible console release for Bohemia’s Arma III, which is currently available in Alpha on Steam?

Nvidia’s senior VP of content and technology has said that mobile devices will very shortly overtake the PS3 and Xbox 360 in terms of technological clout.
Speaking to Bit-Tech, Tony Tamasi said that the milestone will be achieved when Nvidia releases its next generation of mobile chips after it retires its current Tegra 4 builds.
For comparison, both PS3 and Xbox 360 possess around 200GFlops of graphical clout. Tegra 4 boats some 80GFlops while Nvidia’s latest PC GPU, the Titan, boasts around 4,500GFlops.
Indeed, even the PS4 only houses around 1,800GFlops, according to Bit-Tech’s article.
Of course, while it’s easy to build a smartphone or tablet that easily outperforms current consoles, the nature of handheld computing means that the tech is artificially held back but other constraints – chiefly battery power.

April 2nd, 2013, 12:41 Posted By: wraggster
The long-awaited announcement of the first next-generation console has rejuvenated investor interest in core video games.
That’s according to analyst Michael Pachter, who said in an investor note that the trend should grow stronger still once Microsoft finally unveils the successor to Xbox 360.
"There appears to be some light at the end of the long tunnel, with share prices for the game publishers beginning to rally after underperforming the market for most of the last three years,” he stated, as reported by GamesIndustry.
“Once Sony announced the PS4 in February, investor confidence returned somewhat, and share prices for Activision, EA and Take-Two have all risen for most of the year.
"We expect a similar impact from Microsoft's announcement of its next-generation console prior to E3. While there have been no announcements from Microsoft confirming even the existence of a next-generation console, we think that the company is likely to announce before E3 begins in June, with an announcement likely as early as this month.
“Once both next-generation consoles have been revealed, we expect further information on specifications, features and pricing to emerge at E3, beginning with Sony's and Microsoft's press conferences on June 10th."
Pachter admitted, however, that the next-gen consoles are unlikely to raise the graphics quality bar to the same extent that new hardware has done in the past, although other features should still prove sufficient to woo consumers.
“Many investors remain sceptical that these improvements do not allow for a dramatic improvement in graphical quality for next-generation games,” he added. “While we think this is more of a function of the current state of display technology, we tend to agree that next-generation games will not be significantly more visually stunning than current-generation games.
“However, we think that improvements in facial and voice recognition technology, and dramatic increases in memory may allow for 'smarter' game characters, who may react to and adapt to the style of game play.
"We expect consumers to be dazzled by the next-generation consoles, and think that rich multimedia functionality may be sufficient to induce most to consider upgrading. Ultimately, we think that software will drive the purchase decision for most consumers, and we expect a significant number of high-quality and high-profile games to launch for next-generation consoles in 2014."

Epic's new Unreal Engine 4 will not be supporting Wii U, PS3 or Xbox 360, co-founder Mark Rein has said today. When asked during a GDC Q&A if the new engine will run on Wii U, Rein laughed before saying, "No".On a more serious note, he went on to explain, "I mean, sorry, [that's] not really a correct answer. We have Unreal Engine 3 for the Wii U. Right? And Unreal Engine 3 is powering all kinds of amazing games, still lots of games are being made with Unreal Engine 3. We announced today about a new Unreal Engine 3 license," he said (via Kotaku)."Unreal Engine 3 doesn't disappear because of Unreal Engine 4. But our goal for Unreal Engine 4 console-wise is next-gen consoles. That's really what our energies are focused on. If you want to make a Wii U game, we have Unreal Engine 3, and it's powering some of the best games on the Wii U already," he said. But it's not just a Wii U snub - Rein has clarified that the new engine won't be targeting any of the current HD consoles as it is focused on new high-end hardware."Unreal Engine 4 - we're not PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, or Wii U. It's next-gen technology. That's what we're aiming for," he reaffirmed to IGN after the GDC Q&A."The truth is, if a developer wanted to take an Unreal Engine game and put it on Wii U, they could, Unreal Engine 3 is kicking ass on Wii U. The best games on Wii U are made on our technology. What more do you want from us?" he added.Rein has previously described Unreal Engine 4 as "supremely scalable" and said developers could port games developed using it to the Wii U if they so wished.Epic Games has debuted a new Unreal Engine 4 demo video at GDC titled 'Infiltrator', demonstrating what the next-gen engine is capable of on a high-end PC.

Epic has premièred a lavish new video to showcase its Unreal Engine 4 technology at GDC this week - showing the 'Infiltrator' demo running in real time on PC and the previous 'Elemental' video - which features a stone creature emerging from an erupting volcano - running on PS4 dev-kit hardware.
The Infiltrator video, embedded below, exhibits the rendering and lighting power of the new engine with characteristic Epic bombast, but press were also shown an extensive demonstration of the new tools which operate behind the scenes and power the sort of visual fidelity shown in both 'Elemental' and 'Infiltrator'.
A key focus of those tools is ease of use, with a modular system enabling the fine tuning of high-end effects and processes in real-time without ever leaving the executable. Epic's Mark Rein was on hand to explain that he expects to see them applied across the spectrum of gaming hardware.
"Unreal 4 is architecture powered PC and console gaming and scales all the way from high-end next generation console down through PC developed titles for mobile and the web. It's written in C++ which is not only the de-facto language of AAA game development, but the de-facto language of programming. All the major applications and operating systems themselves are written in C++. It's the language that more people know than any other.
"It's designed to help developers achieve maximum productivity - that's the whole reason we built it. It's built to fit teams of all sizes: from a few people to hundreds of people. It's equipped to support all genres and all business models."

APB was an ambitious MMO built by Crackdown dev Realtime Worlds but it flopped, hard. The game died but was resurrected by Reloaded as a free-to-play MMO. We reviewed APB Reloaded last year and it wasn't very good. Now there's a new persistent online APB game on the cards called APB Vendetta, not Vienetta, made by Reloaded, and it's targeting PC and PS4.But it's not funded yet. This is a Kickstarter pitch for $300,000."APB Vendetta is a character-driven extreme mobility competitive shooter inspired by the APB Reloaded universe, built on an entirely new high-agility game system featuring extreme movement mechanics, melee combat, dual-wield weapons, character-specific finishing moves, a fighting-game ethos, customizable private servers, modding tools and an upgraded game engine using the latest (2013) version of Unreal 3."Got that? There's lots more detail on the APB Vendetta Kickstarter page.

The PlayStation 4's new DualShock 4 controller can be charged even while thePlayStation 4 is turned off. The PlayStation 4's new Eye motion camera has a tilt sensor so it can tell players when its facing the wrong direction or if it's fallen off your TV stand. The PlayStation 4's Blu-ray disc drive is three times as fast as the PlayStation 3's. In case it weren't clear, Sony's PlayStation 4 panel at this week's Game Developers Conference wasn't chock full of major revelations, but it did provide plenty of interesting little details about the PlayStation 4 and its various hardware companions.
For instance, the console's "True Name" social functionality isn't automatic -- you have to opt-in to who will see your real name versus your PlayStation Network ID. That is, unless you find a friend through Facebook or another social network where your real name is already your main ID; in that instance, the console defaults to displaying your actual name. That's not the only change coming to your friends list, either, as the standing 100 friends cap is being raised to an unknown amount.
Additionally, the Gaikai-powered Remote Play functionality between the Vita and PS4 is said to be "much better," according to Sony senior staff engineer Chris Norden. Not only can it display your PS4 games in the Vita's native resolution (960 x 544), but it can be activated at any given time rather than having to be preset. And unlike Remote Play on PS3, with PS4 the game being pushed to the Vita is mirrored on your television screen. None of this stuff is what we'd call red hot, but we're hungry for PS4 details and this is what Sony's delivering. Here's hoping the company's more forthcoming at E3.

PC tech giant AMD has revealed that it was the upcoming Radeon HD 7990 that powered EA’s technically impressive Battlefield 4 demo at GDC.
Until now AMD has rarely spoken about the HD 7990 specifically. As expected, the card is basically two high-end HD 7970s spliced together on a single board.
“This is the first public showing,” AMD’s graphics business unit GM Matt Skynner stated, as reported by PCWorld. “We’re not saying much about it other than it’s two series-7900 GPUs on a single card, and it’s whisper quiet.”
The card will be looking to compete with Nvidia’s recently announced GTX Titan card as we head into the summer. AMD is expected to reveal its new 8000 series GPU in the latter half of the year.
Perhaps the bigger question that arises from this is how the next-gen consoles will stand up against the footage we’ve seen.
PS4 (which is widely expected to surpass the new Xbox in terms of raw brute) houses an eight core AMD X86 Jaguar CPU and an unspecified 1.84TF Radeon graphics core. It will also house 8GB of DDR5 RAM, which certainly places it amongst the powerhouses of the gaming sector.
How will all of that stack up against a gaming PC packing an HD 7990? The HD 7970 is one of the fastest cards available right now and can already run the likes of Crysis 3 on very high settings.
From what we’ve seen Crysis 3 mastches the visuals seen in the likes of Killzone 4. Put two of them on one card and gaming PC’s could potentially have already surpassed the next-gen consoles before they arrive.
