It may have sold 22m units across the world, but Ubisoft feels Splinter Cell should be doing even better.
And so it’s tasked one of the masterminds behind Assassin’s Creed to lead a revolution for the spy franchise. MCV speaks to Jade Raymond...
One of my first jobs in the games industry was on Splinter Cell.
I was part of the localisation team that worked on Splinter Cell: Double Agent (2006), and it was here that I fell in love with the series. Never before had a game so successfully made me feel like an actual spy.
And I’m clearly not alone, the Splinter Cell series has sold over 22m units worldwide. It has made $500m in revenue and the five main games in the franchise have never scored lower than 85 on Metacritic.
But Splinter Cell should be doing so much better.
After Double Agent in 2006, Ubisoft set out to make a more accessible Splinter Cell game called Conviction. The game placed a heavier focus on action over stealth and when it launched it did rather well. Critics liked it and it shifted 2m units in a short space of time.
But, due to a difficult and protracted development, Conviction took over four years to build. And by the time game launched in 2010, Ubisoft had released two Assassin’s Creed games, and the publisher’s definition of a successful franchise had changed.
Splinter Cell had been usurped by Assassin’s Creed as Ubisoft’s top core games franchise. And one of the brains behind its success was producer Jade Raymond.
Raymond worked on the first two Assassin’s Creed games, but she’s since departed the franchise to lead a new development outfit in Toronto, Canada. A studio that’s hard at work on the next Splinter Cell title: Blacklist.
“Splinter Cell has benefited a lot from the learning
on Assassin’s Creed especially in the production
of the upcoming graphic novel.” Jade Raymond - Producer, Ubisoft
“I met with Yannis [Mallat, Ubisoft Montreal CEO] and Yves [Guillemot, Ubisoft CEO] to discuss what franchise to bring to Toronto,” recalls Raymond.
“At the time I was executive producer in Montreal responsible for Assassin’s Creed and Watch Dogs and another unannounced new IP. We discussed bringing one of those franchises to Toronto, but we ultimately agreed on Splinter Cell because it was the best fit strategically.
She adds: “In my opinion, Splinter Cell is one of the Ubisoft franchises with the greatest untapped potential. The fantasy of being a secret agent is one of the most exciting premises for a game and it’s also ripe for being redefined. What is a spy post 9/11? The world has changed a lot since James Bond was created and I think that there is room to redefine and own the spy genre across media.”
Ubisoft Toronto is not just creating Splinter Cell: Blacklist, it is now handling the entire brand. And the studio has been charged with taking Splinter Cell away from gaming and into books, graphic novels and even a Hollywood movie. Just like Assassin’s Creed.
“We built Assassin’s Creed with multiple games and media in mind, and luckily for those two reasons, Assassin’s Creed has been able to expand successfully beyond the console games into mobile, web, comics, books and soon film,” says Raymond.
“Splinter Cell has benefited a lot from the learning on Assassin’s Creed especially in the production of the upcoming graphic novel.”
The graphic novel is entitled Splinter Cell Echoes, and is being created by writer Nathan Edmonson and artist Marc Laming. “When readers immerse themselves in the graphic novel, they gain access to Sam’s internal monologue and gain more insight into his strengths, weaknesses and fears,” says Raymond.
But there will be a lot more besides just the graphic novel. Not least of which is the new movie, which has Batman/Inception star Tom Hardy attached, plus Hollywood script writer Eric Warren Singer.

Yesterday, Sony gave a presentation explaining a bit about the new PS4 hardware, the development environment (Windows 7 based IDE), and the changes to the Dual Shock controller. From the article:"The system is also set up to run graphics and computational code synchronously, without suspending one to run the other. Norden says that Sony has worked to carefully balance the two processors to provide maximum graphics power of 1.843 teraFLOPS at an 800Mhz clock speed while still leaving enough room for computational tasks. The GPU will also be able to run arbitrary code, allowing developers to run hundreds or thousands of parallelized tasks with full access to the system's 8GB of unified memory. ... The DualShock 4 controller that's standard on the PS4 eliminates one feature that was seldom used on the PS3 —the analog face buttons..."The trackpad will support two touch points, the rumble motors can be controlled more finely, and the analog sticks were tweaked for "reduced dead zone and better feeling tension that grips your thumbs."

Sony removed the Apache Overkill game from their PSN stores in the past 24 hours. If you are one of the lucky people who could buy and install the game in time, you should now be able to enjoy some good homebrews on your Vita.
I want to emphasize once again that I haven’t personally tested this VHBL port. I want to stress this out, as I am usually closely involved with either testing or developing each port, but this time I decided not to. Some of our beta testers said the compatibility was poor, while other people such as the Z showed us that some emulators such as gPSP, which we thought didn’t work correctly, actually worked well. Bottom line is, VHBL is never perfect, and you’ll have some hit and miss with compatibility

March 28th, 2013, 00:40 Posted By: wraggster
Today at the Game Developers Conference, Sony senior staff engineer Chris Norden gave a presentation designed to introduce the PlayStation 4 to developers. The talk was mostly technical, but they shared new details about the PS4, including how the augmented reality features will work.
The AR will use the PS4's camera, the PlayStation 4 Eye, in combination with the new DualShock controller, which will combine with facial recognition to let the PS4 identify each player based not only on their controller, but their face.
Midway through the talk, Norden showed a demo video of the augmented reality stuff in action. First, we saw a guy in a living room who pulled out a virtually projected menu--we were seeing what he'd see, a reflection of himself on the screen, with the augmented reality graphics projected around him. It then cut to him sitting with a friend, pulling up a digital Pong field, which displayed superimposed over them and their controllers. They then used their controllers to move the pong paddles.
The second demo was cooler, and had the guy "zooming in" to his controller with the touch-pad, where the screen showed an army of little robot dudes living inside it. This is similar to that involved little Rabbids creatures seeming to live inside the Wii Remote.
The demo also felt a little like those little aliens in Toy Story were living within his controller. Watching them on the screen, he'd press buttons on the controller and see them react as the massive structure above them (which was actually his controller) lit up and changed. When he shook the controller, they all freaked out, and when he covered the touch-pad with his hand, their light source went away. Then, he "flicked" the touchpad and we cut back to a view of him in the room, tossing the robots out of his controller and into the room, pushing them around with his hand before eventually vacuuming them back up, also using the controller.
None of this was especially revolutionary, but the fidelity provided by the PS4's camera made it look a lot better than any of the AR stuff provided by the PlayStation Eye or the Xbox Kinect. Norden said that the PS4 camera has a resolution of 1280x800 and runs at at 60Hz. (For comparison, the Kinect and PlayStation Eye both run at 640x480.)
Those kinds of goofy augmented reality demos don't usually get me too excited once they're up and running in my apartment, but as a proof-of-concept for the PS4, the demo was pretty fun.
Norden also tossed out a few other ideas that the combination of facial recognition and controller recognition could provide: It'll theoretically allow face-based logins, let the game identify who is talking based on their voice, have characters in the game look out of the TV at the person controlling them (cool), or have the game automatically re-orient multiplayer splitscreen if the players wind up moving around the room mid-session. All little things, but all nifty.

March 28th, 2013, 00:35 Posted By: wraggster
Chris Norden, Senior Staff Engineer at Sony, just concluded a talk about development on PS4 here at GDC. While mostly aimed at the improvements to the development environment over its predecessor, Norden also offered some interesting factoids for those of us lacking the know-how to create games. For example, the upgraded Blu-ray drive spins discs at three times the speed of PS3.
Norden's talk didn't offer much on the PS4 architecture that we didn't already know, but he elaborated on the DualShock 4 and PS4 Eye peripherals. The DualShock 4 features enhanced dual vibration over the DualShock 3, with lower latency and reduced dead zone – the area surrounding the center point on the analog sticks where the console doesn't pick up input.
Unlike the PS3 buttons, the face buttons, L1, and R1 on the DS4 are digital. DualShock 4 controllers will also charge now when the system is in standby mode – not possible with the DualShock 3 on the PS3 – and he said every PS4 will include a headset in the box, another thing Sony avoided with the PS3.
The new ID system was also demonstrated, where each PS4 player will have two identities. There's obviously the requisite online handle, but also true names for friends pulled from Facebook and through true name search on PSN. By default, true names will not be displayed.
Finally, Norden said that per the PlayStation 4's ability to capture game footage and share online, the system itself will automatically record your last few minutes of gameplay at all times. If you did something interesting or impressive by accident, you can hit the Share button and retrieve that footage; each clip is broken down into chapters that are labeled right in the video editor suite.

Sony has just wrapped up its PS4-centric presentation at GDC in San Francisco during which it shared new information on the high-end console. First up, multiplayer gamers will be pleased to know that Sony will include a mono microphone/headset with every PS4, reports CVG's Andy Robinson, who was in attendance, via Twitter. The firm also said that a split/screen multiplayer game could use the PS4 Eye to identify where players are sat and move the windows around to be suit each player's location in front of the TV.The DualShock 4's lightbar - the illuminated panel across the top of the controller - will assist player recognition by shining a different colour on each controller in use. The lightbar, Sony said, can also be used for in-game effects such as gun muzzle flash health bars.Sony showed off cute augmented reality demo featuring little robots living inside the controller. The could player shake the pad and press buttons to interact with the robots.Sony also confirmed during the presentation that it will raise the PSN friend limit on PS4, according to IGN. It didn't specify what the new limit will be, but currently the PS3 enforces a 100-friend limit. It also promised that every PS4 will come with a "very large hard drive", but again held off confirming capacities.IGN also reports that the DualShock 4 controller will come with an extension port on it - likely to provide the possibility for add-ons in future. It will also revert back to regular digital buttons, doing away with the pressure-sensitive buttons on the PS2 and PS3 controllers due to the fact that no one used them on PS3.THe PS4 will also charge the DualShock 4 (via a USB cable) even when on standby, unlike the PS3, which has to be fully switched on to provide power to drained controllers.Sony has pencilled in a "holiday 2013" PS4 release date for the machine.

Electronic Arts has reportedly confirmed that Battlefield 4 is on its way to PlayStation 4. While it would seem inevitable that the high-end shooter will arrive on Sony and Microsoft's next consoles, developer DICE and publisher EA have been reluctant to even discuss next-gen console versions.According to Polygon, however, at least one 'EA official' at GDC was prepared to confirm a PS4 version."The game is coming to the Windows PC, PS3, PS4 and Xbox 360, according to Electronic Arts officials," reports Polygon."While the PS4 edition is not currently listed on the official pre-order site for the game, an Electronic Arts official confirmed that the game is coming to the platform," it adds.DICE executive producer Patrick Bach dodged questioning regarding next-gen console versions of BF4 in an interview with CVG today.BF4's creative director Lars Gustavsson has also refused to confirm a PS4 or next-Xbox version during talks with press at GDC this week.Battlefield 4 was revealed last night with a visually intense gameplay trailer running on PC, with graphics clearly far beyond the capabilities of current-gen console hardware.Pre-orders for PS3 and Xbox 360 versions are now open, despite the fact that DICE is yet to show those versions of the game running.

Many game developers will tell you that the PlayStation 3's Cell processor was a real bear to support. What they can't tell you: the PlayStation 4's lead architect, Mark Cerny, was already thinking of a solution as far back as 2007. He just revealed toGamasutra that he'd been researching x86-based processors for the PS4 merely a year after the PS3 launch, knowing that there were "some issues" with realizing the Cell's potential. The new console's unified memory and eight-core CPU were the ultimate results of Cerny's talks with game creators shortly after he took the reins in 2008. We've already seen the shift in attitudes through a very developer-centric PlayStation Meeting, but Cerny wants to underscore just how different the PS4's holiday launchshould be versus what we remember from 2006 -- even the first wave of PS4 games should benefit from a healthy toolset, he says. We'll know his long-term planning paid off if the initial PS4 library shows the level of refinement that took years to manifest on the PS3.

Lead system architect explains "developer-centric approach" to new Sony console

Mark Cerny, Sony's lead system architect for the PlayStation 4 and the man who took to the stage to demonstrate it last month, has explained why developers were such an important consideration in the consoles development.
"The biggest thing was that we didn't want the hardware to be a puzzle that programmers would be needing to solve to make quality titles," he told Gamasutra.
He was clear from the beginning that he wanted a "very developer-centric approach to the design of the PlayStation 4" and believed that this would make things go more smoothly. So in 2008 he started to quiz PlayStation 3 developers on what they'd want from a next-gen machine. The answers included unified memory and either 4 or 8 cores. He also spoke to the technology companies that create the tools for the developers.
"When I started talking to the development community, prominent middleware companies were in the mix at that time. It's very important to us to have those engines on our platform. I have to say, also, the insights that you can get by talking to their top technology people -- It's quite nice to have those insights when doing the hardware design."
PlayStation 4 was revealed on February 20, when Cerny called it "a platform by game creators, for game creators."

Sony is pulling out all the stops with the PS4, says Zombie Studios boss Jared Gerritzen.
Speaking to Destructoid, Gerritzen said the console giant had been “very, very proactive” in pushing its relationships with developers, with Sony trying to bring as many devs on board for PS4 development as possible.
Sony are desperate to fix the mistakes it made with PS3, he said.
He said that Sony had done this by offering more direct support for independent developers, and had been sending development kits, setting up events for small studios and was also putting them in touch with PR groups to help bring them success on the platform.
"I think Sony is really in to win this one," said Gerritzen.
"I'm good friends with a lot of guys at Microsoft, I'm under their NDA flag, and Microsoft definitely has a different outlook than Sony does. Sony, like they say 'Yeah, PlayStation 3 wasn't what we wanted it to be in comparison in the 'arms' race".
Jared Gerritzen heaps praise on console giant for supportive role in PS4 development
"So now they're going hard, man. It's pretty cool, on all points. I think that it will be really interesting to see what Xbox fires back with. It'll be an awesome E3. Sony is just like, 'GO! GO! GO! Let's make this hardcore! Let's get all these devs in and let's make it as good as we can’."
Zombie Studios is currently working on one of the PlayStation 4’s first free-to-play titles, Blacklight: Retribution, which was previously released in April last year for PC on Steam.

As part of its continuing push to bring in more indie titles, Sony has revealed plans for player access to alpha and beta versions of games being developed for Playstation’s various platforms.
Joystiq reports that the flexibility in when a game is ready for public release isn’t just limited to PS4, but also PS3, Vita and Playstation Mobile.
"Yeah, if it doesn't have any bugs that are completely destroying the world," Adam Boyes, Sony America VP of publisher and developer relations said. "[CCP's Dust 514] is a great example of putting out content that you know is not final. If you want to monetize it, that's fine. I mean, if you want to put out a game that's playable and does pass the checklists and stuff, you can. If it doesn't sell and you can't support, you may not want to support, but we absolutely support that."
"We allow that on all of our platforms, that sort of continually updating and selling. Again, if people buy it and they're passionate about it, and you want to improve it and make it better over time you can."
Boyes statements follow Valve’s recently announced “early access” initiative, which allows players to purchase and provide feedback for Steam games still in development.

The No.1 selling game on the European PlayStation Network is Tomb Raider.
The game has been No.1 since it launched on March 5th.
With PSN allowing day-and-date releases of physical games on its digital store, its chart is often filled with retail games. And that's certainly the case this week, with Crysis 3, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct and Ni No Kuni performing strongly.
It means perhaps next week we'll see a new No.1, with the launch yesterday of BioShock: Infinite.
MCV prints an exclusive European PSN chart every week, along with our exclusive XBLA chart.
The Top Ten PSN games for Europe are:
1. Tomb Raider – Square Enix
2. Crysis 3 – EA
3. The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct – Activision
4. Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch – Namco Bandai
5. Dead Space 3 – EA
6. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception – Sony
7. Far Cry 3 – Ubisoft
8. Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk – Tecmo Koei
9. Aliens: Colonial Marines – Sega
10. The Cave – Sega

Fans of the BBC's sci-fi flagship Doctor Who can now download content for PlayStation Home (remember that?) based on the hugely popular show.
PS3 owners can now dress up their avatars in the Eleventh Doctor's iconic tweed jacket and bow tie (bow ties, as we know, are cool) and wield the Sonic Screwdriver, according to the PlayStation Blog.
Alternatively, they can don companions' costumes such as River Song's catsuit or alien outfits based on the Silurians and the Silence. They can even have a pet Cybermat follow them around the virtual community.
And, of course, the Tardis makes an appearance, serving as a private room that PS3 owners can invite their friends too. While inside the Tardis, users can film their own Doctor Who-style adventures and upload them automatically to YouTube.
Last week, Sony announced Harry Potter-themed content is in the works for PlayStation Home.

Sony has said that it is open to accepting paid-for alpha builds of games on the PlayStation 4, presumably inspired by Minecraft’s success. The only stipulation, Sony’s VP of publisher and developer relations Adam Boyes told Joystiq, is that it “doesn’t have any bugs that are completely destroying the world”.“[Dust 514] is a great example of putting out content that you know is not final,” he continued. “If you want to monetize it, that’s fine.“I mean, if you want to put out a game that’s playable and does pass the checklists and stuff, you can.”Interestingly, Boyes stresses that Sony won’t place pressure on developers to find success with this model, which opens up the doors to more risky projects. And the ethos will be extended across all of Sony’s platforms, too, from PS3 and Vita, to PlayStation Mobile.“We allow that on all of our platforms, that sort of continually updating and selling,” he added. “Again, if people buy it and they’re passionate about it, and you want to improve it and make it better over time you can.”

Sony detailed PlayStation 4’s power, pad and potential in an hour-long GDC session today.Though SCEA’s Chris Norton was speaking just as Hideo Kojima revealed Metal Gear Solid 5 elsewhere within San Francisco’s Moscone Center, the session was still hopelessly over-subscribed, with GDC staff forced into turning many people away. Those that did join the queue early enough saw SCEA’s Norton explain in greater detail how powerful PS4 is, and the creative potential of the new DualShock pad, PS Eye and the next PlayStation Network.Norton explained that PS4s memory outperforms the DDR3 you can find in many high-end PCs, and that its 8GB of GDDR5 RAM offers developers “Crazy high bandwidth”. Simplicity was also key, said Norton.“If you’re coming from the PS3 you’re probably quite used to the headache of having to split memory architecture, you can’t quite use all of it, the speeds are really wacky on some of it – we don’t have that with PS4. It’s eight gigs, it’s there, it’s easy,” he said.“You’re getting some really amazing memory with PS4 and we’re really excited about it.”PS4’s Blu-Ray drive is three times faster than the current PS3 drive, Norton confirmed, adding that the hard drive in every console will be “very large” and that real names can be used within PS4’s friend system, subject to the players’ approval. PS4’s social functionality will also allow for more than 100 friends, the current limit on PS3.Moving onto outline what’s new about DualShock 4, Norton said that the analogue sticks have been tightened up and there’s a smaller deadzone compared to its predecessor. A mono microphone and headset will come bundled with every PS4 for use with the DualShock 4, and the pads can be charged by USB even when PS4 is on standby. The new touchpad will be clickable, doubling up as an extra button, and will also support dual touch input. Perhaps most intriguing was the explanation of how PS Eye interacts with the light bar on each PS4 pad – one augmented reality tech demo superimposed a simple Pong-style field of play in front of where the players sat, which warped and twisted depending on where and how the light bar was moved around.Another internal demonstration showed an army of miniature robots ‘inside’ the pad, reacting to the movements of the DualShock before being flicked out into the real world using the touchpad. PS Eye could then track the players’ movements, Kinect-style, prompting the AR characters to react in different ways.Connect four pads to PS4 and they will each display a different colour, which can then be tracked by PS Eye and reflect where the player is in the room. Another neat idea proposed that developers could re-arrange split screen displays so that they correspond to where the player is sitting in the room, and then change if the players swap positions.Further explanation of the PS4 pad’s Share button confirmed that the last few minutes of play are captured on the separate chip inside the console, and therefore won’t impact on any game’s technical performance. One press of the new Share button opens up the share screen no matter where the player might be in-game, and a longer button press will take a screenshot, again without interfering with the game’s technical performance. Players can then add in a title for the video or image and share it on social networks, with other players’ comments added in realtime. “We hope it ushers in this new era of anyone being able to share video,” said Norton. “Now it’s easy and built into the system.”Like the Share functionality, Remote Play on Vita will not rob the hardware of any technical grunt, with Gaikai tech ensuring that there will be very low latency. Sony also encouraged developers to use the ‘play as you download’ feature which David Perry explained at PlayStation Meeting. Studios will be able to split game data into multiple chunks, so that PS4 owners can jump in and play the game as it is downloading, once the minimum amount of data has been downloaded or copied to the hard drive. The example Norton used was that any PS4 owner will be able to begin downloading a title remotely on their phone through the PlayStation app, returning home from work to be greeted by a new, playable PS4 game. “We want to minimise the amount of time we spend staring at loading screens,” said Norton. The thematic beats were consistent with those first seen at PlayStation Meeting, then – that PlayStation 4 comes with powerful but easy to use dev tools, that its games will be more connected and social, and access to its wares would be immediate and frictionless. “We want sharing to be so effortless that everybody does it without even thinking about it,” concluded Norton.
