Double Fine founder Tim Schafer believes that Sony has hit upon a winning strategy with the PlayStation 4: treating developers in a reasonable fashion.
Speaking to OXM, Schafer said it was clear that Sony was taking a different approach with the PlayStation 4, because it had bothered to ask Double Fine for its opinion in the first place - the sort of privileged relationship Schafer associates with studios like Insomniac and Bungie.
"This is one of the first times where we've been approached by a platform holder like Sony and asked, 'first, what do you guys want from this new box? We have this new feature, what could you do with it?'" he said. "We've already got some guys playing with some of the new features to see what we can do with it".
This year's Game Developers Conference was positive for Sony's console, as the company's claims of a new inclusive approach to developers were lent credence by people both within the company and without.
Lead system architect Mark Cerny admitted that a primary objective was to avoid the hardware becoming "a puzzle" for programmers. This was supported by Epic's Mark Rein, who called the PS4's architecture, "a really perfect gaming PC."
"It's not that hard to win over developers because all we want is to be treated with just a little bit of reason," Schafer said. "Often you just get told the most unreasonable, crazy things and you're like 'really? That's how you're going to treat us?'
"Just doing things like letting us patch our games when we want to, put our games on sale and release our games in territories that they should be released in - just doing a few things like that can make a developer very enamoured of you."

Call of Duty: Black Ops II will receive its second DLC pack later this month, according to a leaked promotional image.
The image (via Joystiq) was supposedly snapped at a Best Buy, and displays ‘Uprising’ as the content’s title, as well as an April 16th release date. The info matches up with a previous source code leak that unearthed content of the same name.
Maps in the image include Vertigo, Encore, Studio, and Magma, and there also appears to be a new undead mode called Mob of the Dead.
No official word from Activision as of yet. If history repeats itself (and the content is indeed real), expect the Black Ops II add-on to launch exclusively on Xbox Live, and arrive a month or so later on PSN and PC.

Mark Rein, vice president of Unreal Engine creator Epic Games, has hailed the PlayStation 4 for the “crazy, ridiculous stuff” developers can do with it, even going so far as to say that it was “like giving you the world’s best PC.”
“I think it’s a very smart move on Sony’s behalf to build this sort of enhanced PC architecture and then put so much in it. Let’s not forget it has 16 times the memory we had in PlayStation 3 – that’s not insignificant. Knowing that every machine has that, we can do crazy, ridiculous stuff with that,” he said in an interview with CVG.
“Even Windows for most people is tied to about 2 GB of addressable memory space. This really opens up beyond what most PCs can do, because most PCs are running a 32-bit version of Windows. It’s like giving you the world’s best PC,” Rein added.

Sony positioned PlayStation 4 as the developer-first platform at GDC 2013. It is busily eulogising PS4’s simpler PC-like architecture and has, emblematically, signed up indie hero Jonathan Blow’s next game The Witness as a timed PS4 exclusive. But is its attempt to win indie hearts and minds actually working? We asked several independent developers at GDC 2013’s IGF Pavilion whether they’re considering bring their games to PS4 (and Vita), and the majority didn’t know enough about the console to feel comfortable answering. One indie that certainly has taken notice is Dennaton Games. It has already confirmed that Hotline Miami is coming to PS4 and Vita, and told us that Sony instigated the deal. “Yeah, they’ve been sneaking around in the shadows,” Dennaton Games’ Dennis Wedin told us. ”They came over at Gamescom last year and checked [Hotline Miami] out, and they were talking to some of our friends like Vlambeer. They’ve been interested the whole time. They approached our publisher about Hotline Miami and said they wanted to do it.”“It feels like Sony wants to come back to the way they were on PlayStation 2, releasing those kind of odd games that maybe aren’t smash hits straight away. That’s the reason I always played PlayStation – those quirkier games.”Sony looks to have taken note of the critical adoration surrounding Hotline Miami, then. But most indies we spoke to, Simogo’s Simon Flesser included, remained focused on PC and mobile, with PS4 barely on their radar. “I don’t know…I don’t feel any different now about PlayStation,” said Flesser. “If we had a good concept, and if someone were willing to fund that concept, then sure.”Michael Brough, the prolific creator of Glitch Tank, Vesper 5, Corrypt, Zaga-33 and more, seemed similarly open to offers, but it’s clear that Sony that needs to do all of the chasing if it is to win over the indie crowd.“It sounds like they’re good for indies at the moment and that’s kind of cool,” said Brough. “I’d like to sell games and make money to live on, so yeah I’m interested by their pitch and I’m going to talk to them about it, but I don’t really know much about it – it’s not my scene. People have been tweeting me saying ‘you should speak Sony, they’re nice’”Yann Seznez of Edinburgh’s Lucky Frame (Bad Hotel, Wave Trip) was rather more enthusiastic. “It’s totally interesting, yeah,” he said. “I mean we’re not at all excited about only working for one platform, we want to get your stuff out to as many different people as possible so if Sony’s willing to take risks and take funky cool games and unusual ideas and put them on their platform, then we are totally all about it.”“I’ve seen people from Sony calling out on Twitter saying ‘hey, if you’re an indie then get in touch with us’ and we did that and they got right back us right away. If anyone’s enthusiastic about taking our stuff to their platform, and Sony seem to be, then we’re totally up for it.”It is, of course, early days for PS4 as a platform. It appears that Sony’s efforts outside triple-A right now involve courting big-name indies like Jonanthan Blow and Dennaton, and hoping that other indies will follow. After a GDC which showed an indie community more numerous and more influential than ever, it’s a smart move, but one which will need continued, consistent commitment if it is to prove fruitful for PS4.

Earlier version of horror title 'did not exhibit the quality and excitement intended'
Work on Doom 4 was completely rebooted by developer Id Software at the end of 2011.
That’s according to Kotaku, which describes the game as being “in trouble” as it approaches its fifth year in development.
“An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that Id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect,” said Bethesda vice president of marketing and PR Pete Hines.
“As a result, Id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we’re ready to talk about the Doom 4 Id is making, we will let folks know.”
It was originally being developed as a re-imagining of Doom 2 and saw players joining a resistance movement helping to protect the Earth from invaders. A cinematic approach had been taken, leading to some staff internally referring to it as “Call of Doom”.

Hello I made a update for my Learn Japanese game. This version now includes MP4 playback thanks to Lua Player Plus by NaNnI and Rinnegatamante. I've added an option to randomize questions, and I included a new karaoke rhythm game.
It's basically a trivia game designed to help people memorize Japanese words and phrases. The questions will display in English and the objective is to translate the word in it's Japanese counterpart. Once you answer all the questions in sequential order, the stage will clear. There are 15 stages in all, it starts off relatively easy then gradually gets more difficult as you progress.
MP4 playback won't work for PS Vita users running TN-V. You can hold R during start up to skip the intro, then in options menu, switch the version to 0.9B. This version doesn't have MP4 playback.

via http://wololo.net/2013/03/29/release...compatibility/
The latest VHBL release for Apache Overkill had several compatibility issues. Some of these issues have now been fixed, through a mod by JeoWay. Jeoway has taken the time to improve the latest VHBL to add better support.
According to his thread, the update improves homebrew compatibility and some of the homebrew that he has gotten to work are:
- Lamecraft (Terrain generation works)
- DOOM (Sound works right most of the time, playable)
- SNES9xTYL 042 (only this specific version)
- gpsp kai (The emulator itself works fine, saving is a bug in the emulator)
- yMenu
- pyMenu
- Nazi Zombies Portable
He has still not managed to get Daedalus working though (and a note for those who ask, DaedalusX64 will not work with VHBL, as it requires Kernel access. Older versions of Daedalus might however work eventually).

PlayStation players in Japan can spruce up their console collection with a "Metallic Gray" variant of the DualShock 3 wireless PS3 controller, washing ashore on June 20 for 5,500 yen ($59), and that's including tax.
While the metallic gray controller looks suited to Raiden's fashion sensibilities in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, it launches in conjunction with The Last of Us. That's just fine, since a controller based on that game would probably be covered in fungus. There's no word on a stateside release of the silver DualShock 3.

After some recent speculation surrounding a mural unveiling, Rockstar revealed the official box art for Grand Theft Auto 5 this morning. As you can see in full below the break, it does not stray far from the style introduced during the series' PlayStation 2 days.
The art unsurprisingly features the three main protagonists of the game, with Franklin holding the handgun at the bottom, Trevor holding the slightly larger weapon, and Michael taking to the water. Also typical to GTA's style, in the hands of the woman on the left we can see a rather familiar-looking device...
Grand Theft Auto 5 rides onto Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17.

The malignant majesty of Demon's Souls becomes free to North American PlayStation Plus members in today's PSN update. The servers for the From Software game are staying online for the foreseeable future, so there's no reason to pass on a PS3 game we described as a "leather-clad mistress" in our 2009 review - unless, perhaps... you're scared?
Less sadistic Plus entries coming this month include Zombie Tycoon 2, which heads to PS3 and Vita via PSN on April 30, Malicious and Labyrinth Legends for PS3, and PSP game Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny for Vita. There are no PS Plus ETAs for those last three.
As ever, new stuff coming in pushes old stuff back out. If you want to grab Spec Ops: The Line from PS Plus, today's your last chance to do so. Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition dragon punches out on April 9, while Anomaly: Warzone Earthflees on April 16.
Finally, today's PSN update brings discounts to The Walking Dead, Rainbow Moon, and the Söldner-X series, including the first season of Telltale's zombified adventure for $14.99, a price that drops to $10.49 with Plus. For all those deals, check out the PlayStation Blog.

Steal Bas-tard, Curve Studios' fiendish puzzle-platformer, will be released on PS3 and Vita this summer, Sony has revealed. "Following your birth in a cloning lab, you find yourself trapped in a vast and overwhelming network of dastardly chambers, replete with vicious, yet hilarious, booby traps and deranged robots!," lead designer Sam Robinson explains on the PlayStation Blog."Your task is simple; stay out of sight and get to the exit. Persevere to the bitter end and you might just discover the secrets of this vicious world!"Its move to Sony's platforms will see the game renamed something less profane. The studio is giving fans and readers the opportunity to come up with a new moniker and submit their suggestions on the studio's official website.

An Epic Games exec has compared the PlayStation 4 to "a really perfect gaming PC," citing the console's combination of "phenomenal" hardware and convenient user experience. Speaking to CVG in a recent interview, VP Mark Rein called Sony's decision to incorporate off-the-shelf PC components in PS4 "very smart," because in his opinion it will allow many developers to hit the ground running with their next-gen game development. He also pointed to the memory limitations of the 32-bit versions of Windows as an example of how PS4 titles could even surpass what "most PCs" can do."I think it's a very smart move on Sony's behalf to build this sort of enhanced PC architecture and then put so much in it," he said."Let's not forget it has 16 times the memory we had in PlayStation 3 - that's not insignificant. Knowing that every machine has that... we can do crazy, ridiculous stuff with that."The other exciting thing is that... when you think about Windows, even Windows for most people is tied to about 2GB of addressable memory space. This really opens up beyond what most PCs can do, because most PCs are running a 32-bit version of Windows."It's like giving you the world's best PC," he added, pointing to Sony's introduction of "super convenient" features such as the ability to play games while they're downloading and perform background updates."The kind of stuff that they announced that they're doing, the level of convenience and things like that... they're making a really perfect gaming PC," he added."I've always said that the things in the next-generation that aren't just brute force hardware are all about the service and simplicity of the experience - the things that make it as fun and easy to get a PS4 game as it is to get a game on your iPad."Commenting on Microsoft's next-gen console plans, Rein said he was confident the Xbox firm will also be doing something 'along the lines' of PS4.

Took a couple of months, but EPIX is finally ready to fulfill its promise of PlayStation 3 movie streaming today. The network's launching its app for the console, giving users access to some 3,000-plus titles including the likes of The Avengers, Skyfall and The Hunger Games, plus a slew of documentaries, concerts and such. The app itself is free, but requires a premium subscription to really do its job. In fact, if you're already a paid-up member of PlayStation Plus, you'll get a free movie or special every week. A more handheld version of the service is set to hit the Vita in "the coming weeks," according to the company.

In the annals of "clever patents that may never amount to anything," we now have an entry from Sony: a method of sensing touch strength with sound. Since capacitive touchscreens can't detect pressure on their own, a second film is needed that can add weight and cost. Sony's freshly granted patent claims that a microphone can take on that job instead by listening to the sound your finger or stylus makes when it hits the screen and deducing force from that. It could also be used with a camera-basedposition detection system as shown above, meaning your finger's location and force could be calculated on a non-active surface like an ordinary table. Obviously such a device would only detect taps, not presses, and Sony has claimed a calibration method that the average user may not want to bother with. It probably seemed like a good idea at the time of filing (2009) when other force-sensing options had yet to hit market, but this one seems unlikely to see daylight -- though, you never know.
