What was that dog's name that said that? You know, "take a bite outta crime!" Was it something something McGruff? That's not important... although he was pretty awesome. Anyway, Jack Tretton sat down with GamePro and answered some questions about the PS3's progress, the competition and the critics. We'll summarize in a beautiful, crime-free list.
When asked about communicating the PS3 as a multimedia device as well as a gaming console, Tretton says "I'll be the first to admit that it is not our field of expertise. I think creating the technology is something we do well, but explaining the applications of that technology is something we've gotta get better at."
When asked about the media coverage of the PS3 and Sony, especially blogs, Tretton had this to say: "The good news is, [the criticism] isn't an accurate reflection on the success of the company, or of consumer's satisfaction [with the PS3]. I think if you talk to the million people who bought the PS3 in North America, you'll find overwhelming satisfaction." Overwhelming satisfaction is probably over 80% of people feel satisfied. True enough. Out of all my friends who have a PS3, including myself, the satisfaction is 100%. It doesn't matter that I'm the only one with the PS3. R-right?
To make the PS3 a success, Tretton believes the key lies in never resting on his laurels (or the company's collective laurels). He also said "A lot of people in early 2007 are saying "Well, I don't need the PS3's technology." But we know, given where technology's headed, that they're going to want it. And they'll want to invest in it, and they'll pay more for it than they would with the PlayStation 3. You're already seeing it now, where people are adding new configurations to hard disk drives, movie players, and so on. That's technology that [we integrated into] the PlayStation 3."
The PlayStation Network... it's free. No buts, no strings. Free. Plug in your PS3 and start downloading demos, play online multiplayer matches. Free. No signing up for some service. That's the main advantage Tretton sees with Sony's service. He also assures us it's in a very early stage and they are nowhere near where they want to be with it.
PS3's price? Tretton responds: "I won't deny that $599 is a lot of money. It's clearly an investment. I won't tell you I've got [$599] in my back pocket. But I'm also a big believer in "you get what you pay for."
SIXAXIS? "I don't have anything to tell you specifically, but we're certainly open to changing the Sixaxis controller if it addressed North American gamers."
New PS3 model later? "It's something that's in consideration, but again, it's very early on in the PS3's life cycle."
Phew. There's more we sort of grazed over, but these are the major points worth mentioning. Feel free to check out the interview in its entirety and let us know how you feel about it. Not that we're psychologists. But... how does that make you feel?

press release:
Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced details of its presence at the 2007 Game Developers Conference (GDC), with Phil Harrison, president of Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment, delivering the opening keynote speech. GDC is the world's largest conference dedicated to the support and promotion of game development, running March 5-9, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, Calif.
Phil Harrison's keynote presentation, "Game 3.0: Developing and Creating for the 3rd Age of Videogames," will kick off the conference on March 7th, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. PST. The speech will focus on the key components of Game 3.0-- community, user-generated content, collaboration and commerce--all highlighted through live demonstrations of previously un-announced services and games for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™).
"This is a very exciting time to be part of the game business. With advancements in technology and a shift in consumer trends, the development community has a great opportunity to create engaging new experiences in emergent entertainment content," said Phil Harrison, president of Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment. StrmnNrmn posted some more news on his Nintendo 64 Emulator for the PSP:
Before I went away on holiday I asked you what you thought I should look at working on for the next release of Daedalus. Over 200 of you replied, and I've greatly enjoyed reading what you've had to say. There were some brilliant suggestions, so many thanks for your contributions.
It seems pretty clear to me that speed is the single biggest issue that most people want to see addressed. Many people also mentioned compatibility and savestate or save game support, but in nowhere near the same kind of numbers as those wanting speed improvements.
Based on your feedback my current plan is to release Daedalus R10 at the end of March, focusing mostly on speed improvements. If I can fit in any easy compatibility fixes, I'll do this too*.
Several people have asked what possibilities remain for optimisation. Here's a short list of things I know need more work:
In many games, a lot of the time spent executing dynamically recompiled code is doing things which can potentially be emulated at a high level. For instance, over 5% of the time spent executing dynarec code in Mario64 is just converting matrices from floating point to fixed point format. Another 4-5% of the time is spent in a loop invalidating areas of the data cache (which is irrelevent in an emulator.)
Some of the most expensive fragments are those which branch to themselves (i.e. those doing many loops). I can optimise for this to avoid loading and flushing cached registers on each iteration through the loop.
I can implement a frameskip option (I had intended to implement this for R9, but forgot!)
I can make use of the Media Engine (as Exophase suggested in conversation, as the ME can't access VRAM, it might make more sense to execute Audio and Display Lists on the main CPU, and run the N64 CPU emulation on the PSP ME)
There are certain situations where I fail to create fragments in the dynamic recompiler - for instance if the code being recompiled writes to a hardware register, this triggers an interrupt and causes fragment generation to be aborted. I should be able to deal with situations such as this more gracefully.
The fragment generator can do a lot more to improve register caching, and eliminating redundant 64-bit operations.
There are many situations where N64 roms busy wait. I detect very simple occurances of this, but not all of them. If I manually identify more complex examples I can have the fragment generator optimise them away.
Some roms are causing the dynarec fragment cache to be repeatedly dumped and recreated (I think Banjo Kazooie is one example of this). Fixing this may just involve tweaking a couple of magic numbers.
I currently optimise memory accesses under the assumption that most accesses are in the range 0x80000000 - 0x80800000, which is incorrect in the case of roms that make heavy use of virtual memory, or access RAM through the mirrored range at 0xa0000000. I can improve the trace recorder to collect information on which range a memory access fell in, and generate code to speculatively optimise for this.
Now that the dynarec engine is producing much better code, the cost of display list processing is becoming more significant, and may finally be worth profiling and optimising.
That's quite a big list, so I doubt I'll be able to work on these things before the end of March, but I think it shows there's still a lot of scope for further optimisation.

Sony Computer Entertainment chairman and chief executive Ken Kutaragi was slammed with more criticism today, this time from Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer himself. This comes just three months after an article in Newsweek berated the executive for his "slowness" in securing PS3 exclusives, which it claims cost Sony PS3-only games including GTA IV, and the highly anticipated Assassin's Creed.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, it states that the "uncommunicative" Kutaragi was moved in a recent Sony reshuffle because Stringer found him difficult to work with.
Kutaragi touts the PS3 in 2005.
The article also states that Kutaragi would frequently make decisions without informing chief exec Stringer, and not tell him about problems in the production process. One example alleged that Kutaragi had allowed the PS3 to go over budget on development costs without clearing it with upper management first.
He also advised for cutting the price of the 20GB console by 20 percent in Japan, a decision which Stringer said he agreed to in a hope it would ensure the console's success, but now admits, "Financially it wasn't one of my best moments."
Stringer told the newspaper that in an attempt to patch up relations between the two, he has tried hard to win Kutaragi's trust, to no avail: "I've had dinner with [Mr. Kutaragi] more times than I've had dinner with my wife, and that's not really healthy," he said.
In December, Stringer moved Kutaragi's role away from the day-to-day control of the games division, and instead he is now focused on the next-gen games side of the business, the article concluded. SCE day-to-day operations are overseen by president Kaz Hirai, former head of Sony Computer Entertainment America.

Just wanted to keep you guys in the loop...
^_^ Ladies and gents, I give you:
ThemeMagic!
I am sure you have been hearing about all these new themes coming out, and I am sure that after a while you get annoyed swapping back and forth (Especially if one theme has an rco another one didn't)
So to help people out, ThemeMagic will make a backup of your current theme (And allow you to save yours in a format that ThemeMagic can understand), and will let you quickly swap between them!
You can also stick things in the "Themes\AddNew" folder to just add something to your current theme instead of reseting to your original before hand.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To Install ThemeMagic
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Unzip my program somewhere.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To Install new Themes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just make a new folder in the "Themes" one (it gets created after first run)
and put all files in it. My program will auto install to the correct folders...
Example:
Say I have a theme called MyNewTheme.
MyNewTheme is a zip file containing several RCO files and a font.
I just unzip it to ThemeMagic\Themes\MyNewTheme
Now when I run my program, `MyNewTheme` is an option.
If you have 3.10 OEA, please leave topmenu_plugin.rco out.
If you accidentally flash it, just rerun my program and choose the !OriginalBackup! to get your original theme back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To Run
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Go to your PSP's recovery menu, then to `Advanced`, then select `Toggle usb (flash0)`.
2. Run ThemeMagic.bat.
Follow on screen instructions.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To Add to Current Theme
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Put the new items to add inside the `Themes\AddNew` folder.
2. Go to your PSP's recovery menu, then to `Advanced`, then select `Toggle usb (flash0)`.
3. Run ThemeMagic.bat.
4. Select the theme `AddNew`. All items will be added to the current theme.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To Save Current Theme
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Go to your PSP's recovery menu, then to `Advanced`, then select `Toggle usb (flash0)`.
2. Run ThemeMagic.bat.
3. Select the theme `S` or `s`.
4. Name your theme (Try to avoid spaces).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To Restore Original Theme
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Go to your PSP's recovery menu, then to `Advanced`, then select `Toggle usb (flash0)`.
2. Run ThemeMagic.bat.
3. When it asks for what theme to use, choose !OriginalBackup! or R.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To Change Themes Using a Custom Batch File
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Go to the folder that contains ThemeMagic.bat
2. create a new text file, and save it as `UseTheme.bat`, where Theme is the name of your theme.
3. Right click the batch file (If it looks like a notepad, then you actually named it `UseTheme.bat.txt`), and select edit.
4. Input the following into the field and save it:
ThemeMagic.bat G: MyTheme
Where G: is the drive the psp is on, and MyTheme is the theme you want to use. It will look for MyTheme in the Themes folder.
<for those who like making their own batch files, my program supports the /? standard, and you can run it entirely automatically or partially automatically from command line>
I have made two versions of this program:
Version 1 (Nothing but my program, no Themes included): 5.07 KB:ThemeMagic!
Version 2 (Included themes : 5.87 MB:ThemeMagic! themes included.
The readme for each theme is included, so read them.
If you don't have enough room, just restore your PSP to original, and free some up.
Themes I added in:
Black32 XMB Theme Encore 4
PSP3d (Mine, works on 3.10 OEA)
Zelda (This has a nonflash background, and coldboot.vag which is not flashable by itself)
Duranium
Blocki
Gears Of War
SaiZn's Orange and White
SaiZn's Red and Silver
theICE_Man
These are the files my program can flash, and what they do:
01-12.bmp ~Change the wallpapers (behind wave)
gameboot.pmf ~Change the gameboot (Video/sound for homebrew)
game_plugin.rco ~Change the game Loading icon
htmlviewer.res ~Change the sounds of the browser
impose_plugin.rco ~Change the Volume Bar
opening_plugin.rco ~Change the cold boot sound (I think)
photo_plugin.rco ~Change the photo loading icons.
premo_plugin.rco ~I have no clue, but it was in a theme package.
system_plugin.rco ~Change XMB Sound Effects (I think)
system_plugin_bg.rco ~Change the XMB Wave
system_plugin_fg.rco ~Change the Clock
topmenu_plugin.rco ~Change the Menu
ltn0.pgf ~Change the font.

Aeropause posts that a recent episode of the show features a Grand Theft Auto parody. From the original post:
Last night's episode of The Simpsons had Bart seeing a psychologist to try and figure out what motivated him to tell a ghost story about a school lunchroom cook that beheaded and made soup from kids many years ago...
Bart initially resists the psychologist, so she feigns disinterest, saying that since she gets paid by the school either way, they might as well play videogames instead. What's the videogame? Why it's Death Kill City II: Death Kill Stories. The box art even mimics the style of Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories.
Bart proceeds to gleefully eradicate all of humanity in the videogame and the psychologist takes notes.

New games and services for the PlayStation 3 will be making their global debut in the keynote address by Sony's worldwide studios boss Phil Harrison at the Game Developers Conference, Sony has confirmed.
In a statement issued today, the firm revealed that Harrison's speech, titled "Game 3.0: Developing and Creating for the 3rd Age of Videogames", will include "live demonstrations of previously un-announced services and games for the PS3".
While the unveiling of new game software for the console will obviously be welcomed, the key phrase in that statement may well be "services" - since speculation has been rife in the past week that the company will unveil a major new expansion of its online services in the keynote.
Sony's definition of "Game 3.0" encompasses a wide variety of concepts including user-generated content, community, collaboration and commerce, all of which the firm claims will be demonstrated in the products which Harrison will introduce.
Harrison's keynote, which takes place tomorrow at 10.30am PST (6.30pm GMT), is the centrepiece of Sony's presence at the Game Developers Conference, which is taking place in San Francisco throughout this week.
The company is also using the event as an opportunity to showcase its new development tools, with the firm's booth showing off techology including the Tuner For PS3 profiling tool, Unreal Engine 3, the PSSG high-level graphics package, and other tools including analysis and physics packages for the console.
"This is a very exciting time to be part of the game development community," Harrison commented in today's statement. "Advancements in technology combined with new consumer trends mean the industry has a great opportunity to create engaging new entertainment experiences for the world."
"I believe we're at the threshold of a new era in creative game development that's destined to drive our industry growth through the next decade or more," he concluded.

Electronic Arts' chief executive Larry Probst has predicted that Sony will see a decline in its market share in the current console generation - but he still expects the PS3 to come out on top.
"We expect that there will be a more level playing field this time around than last time," Probst told an investor conference in the United States this week, according to the Reuters news agency.
Probst, who recently announced that he'll be stepping back from the CEO role at EA on April 2nd to allow former chief operating officer John Riccitiello to return to the company as its new chief executive, highlighted the "expensive" price of the PS3 as a key problem facing the console. He pointed out that the audience at Sony's E3 conference gasped when the US$ 600 price point was revealed.

Sony Computer Entertainment is working on a number of episodic PlayStation 3 games to be revealed this year, says SCEA director of production John Hight.
"Mid-summer this year we'll be talking about some games that are episodic in nature," Hight said, speaking at the Independent Games Summit at GDC. "Some by design, more like interactive TV broadcasts and some to take content and spread it out"
Hight is responsible for the Santa Monica Sony team that produced the first PlayStation Nework title BlastFactor, and he also signed flOw developer thatgamecompany to a multi-project PSN deal.
Hight also said that thanks to procedurally generated content "some fairly small games may have hundreds of hours of play".

New release from CalusCorps:
I am very proud to present to you guys my very first Lua game named Kungfro. This game is like a old school side view fighter but for the PSP and ONLINE. As of right now you only can punch but in future updates you will be able to do a lot more, I will also add some sound in.
The main feature in this games release is Online, thanks to Youresam you can battle players from across the world. I have not tested online due to my brothers both having 3.11 PSPs. So if you guys can connect and it works please post it here. I will be away for a while but when I get a chance I will try and play some rounds. As of right now the a.i. is very dumb and bugs with many graphical glitches that I hope to fix in the next update.
Please read the readme as it is very helpful and report and bugs back here. I worked hard on this game for countless hours and I hope some of it shows.
Controls:
x is to jump
square is to punch
start is to exit

This Version is 95% Complete, Releasing Early to get some real testing and hopefully Work out all the bugs before the PxP competition deadline.
Known bugs:
1. Some audio distrotion may occur at random times, this usually clears itself up after the sound file finishes playing.
2. Memory Management a little sloppy, may occasionally crash when switching between all the modes, working to resolve.
3. Debugging keys still mapped, won't tell you what they are but you might just figure them out.
